Not a Crumb Left Behind
It was a peaceful afternoon. London could be heard bantering outside the window, a mix of the chattering people and the birds chittering. The room she was in was beginning to smell like cinnamon rolls, the ones her aunt had skillfully crafted just for her niece.
Shelby licked her lips, her eyes glued to her phone as the TV blared in front of her. Her legs were curled underneath her, her body sunken deep into the navy blue armchair. The entire room was lue themed and succeeded in keeping things calm and collected.
Her aunt, who went by Greta, though her real name was Eugenea, was stepping into the room, first glancing at the Shelby then at the TV. She smiled then went over to little table. She more as floated than walked, the dresses she was wearing tickled the ground, swaying this way and that. Indoors she mirrored someone from long ago while in public she looked like a normal woman with a vintage touch to her style. Shelby couldn't figure out why she didn't just go full modern.
"Hello, Auntie. Are the buns ready yet?" Shelby sported a crisp accent that mimicked the locals, something that still startled her relative to this day.
Greta smiled again, this time with the remote in her hand. "The Telly does not need to be this loud, deary. Don't want to rustle the neighbors." She tapped the device into her palm, thinking as she watching the young girl play her games. "Have you...went outside today?"
"Not really, unless you count when I stuck my head out to say 'morning to the birds." She cheered softly as she beat another difficult round.
Her aunt clucked her teeth. She swished all the way to the window, closing it softly. "Morning to the birds...and why is that?"
"Well," she explained, readjusting herself into her seat. "My dad said that if you speak kindly to the animals they won't do bad things like biting you or pooping on your car."
There was a brief moment of silence as her Aunt tried to find words to say. Shelby looked u'p and this small gesture released the burst of laughter that she didn't mean to let out.
A second later Greta was doubled over in glee, her face turning pink from the fit of giggles. Shelby laughed along half-heartedly, delighted just to entertain someone. "Sorry, I say weird things while I play games."
Her Aunt shook her head. "No, so, I needed that, you're absolutely fine, my dear." Greta wiped her eyes with a handkerchief, a flitter giggles escaping her lips. "It just set me off, that's all."
Shelby pursed her lips and nodded, going back to her game. Just at that same time a loud ding! could be heard as the oven timer went off. Greta ran off, saying, "I best go get that."
She was still playing her game but her mind had wandered. She began thinking of her parents, as she often did, but she began to miss them more as the time grew closer to her starting school. At the moment it was summer time but the break seemed to go by so fast. Usually Shelby was used to that, having fun all day and sleeping all night, though she stayed up late watching movies, but it was different now. She would be going to a new school which was full of wizards and witches and was entirely too far from America. Sometimes she really wondered if this was all just a super long dream, neither good or bad.
Her Aunt reentered the room, a giant beam on her face. "Who's ready for buns?"
Not I, thought Shelby, but it was an answer for an very different question.
