Remedy for Potions pv

Surprisingly, Potions was a subject Maman had touched on less in Archer's practical magic lessons. However, the boy had still taken to the subject finely, always being precise with his measurements and calculations, never leaving room for imperfections or mis-brewings. In the past semester, the lad would say his Potions endeavours were as successful as any other fathomable class, achieving the usual straight-Os and praises, all to be expected. However, what Archer Duncan had never looked forward to in Potions was its often requirement for potions to be made in pairs or even groups at times. Each time, especially the ones a month after the incident with Matthew Campbell in Defence Against the Dark Arts, Archer had got a sense of unnerving dread that history would only repeat - perhaps far too irrational to regard, since every pairing after that was either a success or simply mediocre, which was enough, since he did not mind placing in most of the work anyway.

Archer's quill hovered atop a sheet of parchment as Professor Regan meticulously explained the recipe for Babbling Beverage, her words appearing on the blackboard behind her. Carefully, Archer copied it down into his notebook:
Ingredients: 1 Dried Poppy Head, 2 Valerian Sprigs, 3 Aconite Blossoms, 1 Unicorn Hair, 1 Sprig of Dittany

In a mortar, crush one dried poppy head into a powder
Add to cauldron
Add 2 Valerian Sprigs to cauldron
Stir 3 times, counter-clockwise
While wearing protective gloves, add 3 aconite blossoms to cauldron
Wave your wand
Leave to brew for 30 minutes
Add one Unicorn Hair to cauldron to neutralise the poison of the cauldron’s contents
Stir 3 times, clockwise
Add 1 sprig of dittany to cauldron
Stir 5 times, counter-clockwise
Wave your wand to complete the potion
After all, they might be required to brew said potion later in class. Any usual student might excite at the idea of practical work - and Archer was no exception - but he would have much preferred to do it on his own, meaning there would be no chance of him to mess up social conversation and no chance of his partner to mess up the potion brewing. It was the most beneficial option for either party.

'Now, pairings,' Professor Regan announced. She must have said they would be separated into groups beforehand, but Archer had been too focused on copying the recipe to have heard. Perhaps, Mister Campbell was correct when he said he lacked multitasking skills. Still, he caught the variation of reactions; some were joyous, anticipating a pairing with their friend, others were as disgruntled as Archer at the mention. 'Speak of the devil,' Archer muttered under his breath, drying his quill and slipping it back into its pouch. Nothing dramatic had happened in the past pairings, much to Archer's delight, and he tried to reassure himself that nothing too drastic was going to happen today either.

But then, of course, fate was nothing but a cruel mistress. Thankfully, the name that was called with Archer's was, in fact, not the one of Mister Campbell's. Bracing himself, Archer's shoulders stiffened, then relaxed slightly. 'Archer Duncan and and Remedy Norden,' Professor Regan said, her voice reverberating off the unforgivingly cold stone walls. He had certainly seen her before, whether in lessons or around the Slytherin common room. His mind roughly referenced back to a girl with incredibly sharp features, a strong jawline and high cheekbones, set upon a narrow face. She had black hair, or perhaps an incredibly dark brunette, complimented by her dark complexion.

Archer's eyes flitted across the room, seeking a lass with such an appearance. Eventually, his dark hazel orbs landed on a girl several seats down, and since she had not yet stood up to seek him out, the only solution seemed to be for Archer to do the honours. Standing up with a sigh, he pocketed his quill-case, just in case there might be an occasion for use. Stepping out from his desk, he made his way to the girl. 'Excuse me,' he said, stood in front of her, his posture kept neutral, heeding to any heiress, or any muggle-born with a distaste of pureblood tradition, 'Do you happen to be Miss Norden?' He paused, awaiting an answer. If it was the affirmative, he would reply with the most common of his introductions, 'Archer Theodore Duncan,' he would say, extending a hand for her to shake, 'Pleased to make your acquaintance.' Hopefully, this would be another smooth sailing.

Disgruntled was she who solemnly bore witness to a certain platinum-haired Slytherin (@Aleksandra Fairbairn) being partnered with a sheepish Gryffindor by Potions Professor Regan following her presentation. Plans thwarted and undone, the Vipress suppressed a sigh behind her despondent countenance as her brown gaze panned the chamber and its inhabitants. With tiny flickers of disquietude etched upon the girl's strained face, the woman announced name after name as though a countdown to Remedy's imminent doom. The seconds felt interminable, and each name carried by Professor Regan's booming voice lacked familiarity.

To Remedy, Potions was a structured elegance that ranked highly among her subjects, second only to the Slytherin's natural fancy of Defense Against the Dark Arts. In the category of most-favoured Professors, however, Professor Regan resided at the top, being ever the diligent and wise professor she was. Her teachings would foster Remedy's appreciation of Potioneering; therefore, she began to consider the craft an artform that required nothing less than scrupulous care to master with naught her precision and tactical calculations. Try for aforementioned mastery; Remedy would, but was she to be a master at the ripe age of 12 years old? Hardly not, unfortunately, yet her straight-O's assignment after assignment displayed a knack for the subject in particular. Of course, the only vexation of Potions was the requirement for potions to be made in randomized groups; ever the soloist, Remedy sought to work alone unless luck would have her paired with a familiar face. That would not be the case on this ill-fated day.

So she thought.

"Archer Duncan and Remedy Norden," Professor Regan bellowed.

Archer Duncan was certainly a name Remedy had a slight inkling of; they shared a house, classes, and perhaps crossed paths within the common room. Her mind attempted to paint the portrait of her fellow housemate, but a recollection of memory would be rendered unnecessary as a boy, whom Remedy presumed to be Archer, would step away from his desk and make way to the girl.

"Indeed, I am," Remedy replied with a passive smile, gently shaking his extended hand, "A pleasure to formally meet you after all this time."

Mid-April had arrived, yet fate would only have the two serpents be matched today. Was that a mere coincidence or perhaps a stroke of brilliance from the most Divine? The truth and sincerity behind her wordage and voice lingered heavily in the air, and Remedy had many questions she dared not breathe existence into. Not yet, anyway. Only time would reveal the outcome of this pairing's shared success or inferiority, and there was an uncanny yet veiled eagerness seeping from the Norden progeny to begin their assignment and discover what kind of partner this silver-tongued Archer Theodore Duncan would be.

"Shall we begin?" she inquired with a smile.

'Indeed, I am' Remedy replied, her smile indifferent, undoubtably of the privileged, her casual confidence related to magical endeavours identifying this once faceless Miss Norden as the stereotypical pure-blood Slytherin viper, simply a dark-haired and -skinned version of his childhood friend Arianna. It was almost pity he had never known enough of and about the white-haired Swann to refer to her as a friend. A part of him truly wondered if, below all the calculating glamour, their personalities ranged different or if each were the exact marble statue their households so desired. Pulled back to reality as their fingers graced each other, Archer nodded. Her handshake was light, the signature of a lady brought up with standards. 'A pleasure to finally meet you after all this time,' she continued.

'Shall we begin?' She proposed, followed by an ambiguous smile. Inclining his head once more in agreement, Archer's nimble fingers, a trait following that of his pianist mother, moved to sort out the ingredients, as he replied with a quick, 'Indeed.' Gripping lightly around a dried poppy head, he then let it drop into a mortar from a gap in his fingers, and handing the pestle to his partner, said, 'If you would kindly crush the poppy head, that would be much appreciated while I gather the Valerian Sprigs.' If Remedy was indeed to agree to such, then Archer would pick out two of the desired sprigs, waiting until the young lady had finished the crushing of the poppy head before dropping it into the cauldron below. The partnership could be temporary and swiftly over at the end of this class, or perhaps it would blossom into an acquaintanceship to last at least to the end of the semester, or of course, Archer could make a new rival, which was not on his list of desired outcomes today.

No worries about the late reply! I know this is kind of short but it will get longer and more detailed as we develop further.
