Soon to meet @Charlotte Winfield

Studying was something that Simon Kincaid did often - whether it was to refresh his memory to retain information for an upcoming examination or just to instill it into memory. This, along with his musically creative mind, his quest to find answers to his many questions, and his love of reading would have made him a good candidate to be sorted into the house of Ravenclaw four years back at the beginning of his journey at Hogwarts.

What would not make him a good candidate to join the Ravenclaw house was his inability to remain still and silent while he studied, read, or worked on composing a piece of music. Whether it was Akathisia, ADHD, psychomotor agitation, or just plain being stir-crazy, Simon Kincaid was always swaying when waiting in line, tapping his leg when listening to professors talk, and either quill tapping or humming a tune to a song in his head when his mind wandered elsewhere.

It was for this reason he was in the Library that very reason. In his First Year at Hogwarts, he had gotten too loud during a study session and a group of Ravenclaws banned him from the Study Room. This banishment wasn't officially endorsed by any professor or other staff member at Hogwarts but it still left the Hufflepuff feeling rather unwelcomed in the space. He often now took his studying to his dormitory, the Hufflepuff Common Room, the Library, the Grounds, or over by the Lake.

He was doing a bit of research for a Care of Magical Creatures assignment on Bowtruckles - a tree dwelling magical beast with a general appearance of a stick or twig that camoflaged well into its natural habitat, making them quite difficult to discover. Simon had heard rumor that there were many on the small island in the middle of the Great Lake. They were only classified as XX by the Ministry, therefore generally harmless and could be domesticated. Simon had never seen one personally before. Bowtruckles, according to the book he was leafing through, lived in Western Englad, Southern Germany, and the mountains of Scandinavia.

That was enough to do it. Mountains.

A song from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in the 1960s popped into his head.

And while the Library had been quiet up until now, despite the many students inside from a rainy day, he began to first tap the beat of the opening with his quill on the wooden surface of the table and then started to sing softly.

"Listen BAY-bee, ain't no mountain high
Ain't no valley low, ain't no river wideeee enough, baby

If you need me call me, no matter where you are
No matter how far, don't worry, baby

Just call my name, I'll be there in a hurry
You don't have to worry!

'Cause, baby, there ain't no mountain high enough
Ain't no valley low enough
Ain't no RIVER wide enough
To keep me from getting to you, babe...."

It wasn't his intention to bother anyone. He wasn't even aware of it. At least he had a nice voice.

Before attending Hogwarts, Lottie had been overwhelmed by the idea that her time would be constantly filled with classes, homework, and millions of other out-of-school social activities she would have to attend to fit in with her classmates. Now, sitting with her nose in a Charms notebook, sh realized just how dull the school could prove to be.

She had been keeping up with most of her classes, her grades likely boosted by the extra time her parents had set aside when she was young just for her to study the topics that would be brought up at the magical school, which just meant that she had very little to do outside of those classes, especially being the introvert that she was. She had taken to spending most of her free hours sitting around the library and prepping herself for future assignments. Not very fun, but it was familiar.

Most chose to study in the Study Room, which was put aside just for the act of studying, but Lottie much preferred the atmosphere of the library. The scent of old books wafting through the seemingly endless aisles of stories upon stories filled her to her core and brought on a sensation of completeness that she rarely had the pleasure of feeling. It also reminded her slightly of home, a distant, bittersweet thought.

While the library was usually fairly empty, today many students had taken shelter in the library to get away from the rain outside, speckling the other tables and either chatting quietly or perusing through books of their choosing. One of the sounds, however, dragged Lottie's mind away from the book in front of her, to her slight annoyance. It was the sound of singing.

She looked around confusedly, eyebrows knitted together as she searched for the source of the noise. Her eyes trailed around the room until they landed on another student, older than she was. She tried to decipher the words, but it wasn't a song she had ever heard before. She hadn't realized she was staring at the boy until her thoughts came back to her and a flush of embarrassment filled her.

Apologies to @Charlotte Winfield

Thoughts of bowtruckles were far from his thought now as he was apparently all the way distracted and he glanced up from his book, surveying the Library as he continued to sing.

"Remember the day I set you free
I told you you could always -....."

He ceased singing as his eyes fell upon a student who was staring back at him. It didn't seem to be a casual glance, but that her attention had been fixated on him for some time. He gave a little wave and smiled, hoping that he hadn't upset her. Not everyone was a fan of Motown favorites from the 1960s and 1970s from the States, but definitely most weren't a fan of disruption when trying to partake in library activities.

He hoped this wasn't the Study Room situation from First Year all over again. No one needed a repeat of that - not those Ravenclaws, and definitely not Simon. He gathered up his things and stuffed most into his enchanted satchel with the exception of the book about Bowtruckles and the draft of his essay now tuck within its pages and came over to where she was.

"Sorry......sometimes I get a bit - distracted," he said as he approached. "I can offer compensation for your troubles. A chocolate frog? Some Every Flavour Beans? A lemon drop?" the last one would be his choice.

One might not even consider it troubles perhaps, because his singing really wasn't that bad. Music was sort of his thing - his fondness in life.

"If a gift offering doesn't suffice, you are free to conduct some sort of public humiliation upon me - on the Grounds, in the Courtyard, or within this very Library if you should fancy." But that might be taking it to the extreme and would require some planning perhaps on her part.

Lottie turned her head down, ashamed for being so careless with her body language. Her time at Hogwarts was already off to a rough start as she began to realize how difficult it really is to make friends in such a large school, so the idea of making enemies sent chills down her spine. Her Charms textbook was looking mighty interesting right then.

She barely realized he was approaching until his voice cut through the air, almost causing her to jump back with surprise. Looking up, the boy had approached with an apology that included the names of a few words that sounded like gibberish to the first year. Lemon drop was the only one that rang a bell, but the rest may as well have been a foreign language. Curiosity got the better of her, and she gently closed her textbook to give him her undivided attention.

"Is that wizard candy?" She asked a bit bluntly. One of the worst things about her parents cynicism was their hatred of all things that didn't come with a monetary or social benefit, such as the tasteful and wacky themes of magical candy. After a few the brief tastes she had received of it from her sister's letters, she had gained somewhat of a hunger for it.

As the boy continued on with a few more... morbid suggestions of things Lottie could inflict upon him in order to ensure his apology was set in stone, the girl's eyes widened a bit with frantic confusion.

"Public humil- no, no!" She shook her head quickly to solidify her insistence. "It's not that big of a deal, really I just- I didn't mean to stare. I don't 'fancy' making a fool of you!"

Talking away to @Charlotte Winfield

"Good, I do that enough myself - especially when singing in the Library whilst everyone is trying to study and learn," he smiled softly, bringing up the situation that was just at hand moment's ago. Simon then held up one finger, indicating for her to wait and he went to his own table and slipped his bag from it, bringing it over his shoulder and returning.

"Those were some of the wizarding candies. Would you like some to try? I'm not one for sweets myself but lemon drops are always a favorite despite - although, there's nothing that differentiates them from the muggle world," and he glanced to the girl, trying to gather if she was a pureblood or a muggleborn or what. He wasn't sure. Maybe it wasn't really something you could outright assume about someone based on their looks or dress anyway.

Simon set down his bag of lemon drops on the table beside her. "And here's some of the every flavor beans. They mean it when they say every flavor - there's cherry and lemon and pumpkin and grass and olive and cheese." He wouldn't bring up his favorite as it was, most likely, not a favorite to many but then again, most of the Hogwarts student population wasn't half vampire.

"But if you like sweets, I do recommend a chocolate frog,"
and Simon handed one out to her. "It's only an enchantment that makes it jump, and only once. When that's happened, its now just a delicious chocolate treat - at least if you like chocolate. My girlfriend absolutely adores it and loves these things," and that's why Simon always had several on hand; just in case. "There's also a card in each one that you can collect." He was the proud owner of a full set.

His relaxed tone was enough to ease some of the tension that held Lottie up like a marionette. Carefully, she let her guard down enough to crack a humorous smile at his words. The smile quickly turned into a curious frown as she studied the candy he held out to her. They reminded her faintly of home, and it made her stomach turn.

"I wouldn't know." Lottie replied to his comment about the differences between muggle and wizard candy, mostly out of an ingrained need to establish her position. She kept having to remind herself that there was no need for that here.

The next candy was one she had heard of only faintly from her sister, one that both interested and revolted her. She scrunched her nose up a bit, mumbling, "Grass?"

Finally, the last item he pulled out was a single chocolate frog, and this one he handed right to her. She looked at the packaging carefully, absorbing his words with mild intrigue. Her nimble fingers unboxed it slowly, before she cupped her hand over the top to avoid any jumpy mishaps in the library. When she was sure the coast was clear, she plucked the frog from the box and held it out in front of her.

"They're not... alive, are they? Just chocolate?" She turned it over in her palm, giving him a questioning look.

Offering to go on a tour of Honeydukes with @Charlotte Winfield

"Are you muggleborn?" he inquired out of curiosity from her lack of knowledge.

"No, not alive - just a magical trick. They've only got one good jump in them so be mindful of that and don't let them hop to the floor. Some fellow classmates like to bring their animals into the Library and I'm not a chocolate fan myself but I can't think it would taste good if you were combined with pet hair."

"But I'm also afraid that if you're looking for some explanations about wizard candy, you've unfortunately fell upon the most uneducated of mentors. I enjoy a good lemon drop but beyond that, sweets aren't really my thing. I've always enjoyed the savory to the sweet. I wonder if that's all in part of being a dhampir,"
he shrugged. Maybe since he was essentially half vampire, his food palette was quite dull. He had met another dhampir or two while at Hogwarts but never remembered to ask them about their culinary preference.

He shrugged and hoped the dhampir thing wasn't something that would scare her off. Ever since coming out with it in the October 2023 edition of The Hogwarts Headliner, he was done hiding his identity from his classmates. "Or....or....what we could do instead of finding you a new candy mentor is to turn myself from mentor to tour guide and we could always plan a trip out to Hogsmeade and visit Honeydukes and see all the wizarding candy for yourself."

Maybe she wasn't up to planning an outing with someone she had just met but Simon Kincaid did enjoy the role of tour guide.

At the blunt question, Lottie's eyebrows rose a bit and she quickly shook her head. "No, no, I'm just- I don't really eat sweets a lot is all." Her face flushed a bit, and she carefully watched the frog while listening to the boy's explanation. Before she could hear the end of it, though, the little thing leapt from her hand and right into her face, smacking her in the nose. She winced, exasperatedly plucking its now dormant body from her face and placing it onto her lap.

As he continued on, her mind caught onto the last word he had used. Dhampir. She recalled reading about it in her magic research a few years back, connecting it with the muggle term "vampire". She was at once intrigued by the boy, but bit back the long line of question she had queued up in her mind for his sake. Instead, she just gave a tight nod, replying with a restrained, "Yeah. Maybe."

The rainfall outside had seemed to calm down a bit, and now a small crack of gray light shined in through the thin library windows. Lottie embraced for as long as she could, knowing that it was only temporary and the rain would surely be back by the time dinner started. Distracted by the shifting weather, she had only just caught the tail-end of the boy's offer, which was just enough for her to be taken aback.

She stuttered a bit before finally managing, "You mean to sneak out?" She felt a bit embarrassed to say it, as he likely was of the proper age to attend Hogsmeade and she was only a first year. Still, as she thought over the idea, something about it excited her in a way that she couldn't place. It reminded her, faintly, of life before her sister left, sneaking out of bed to play in the gardens and going into town when her parents were out of the house. "Well, I... I suppose if there's a way for me to get there without any trouble then it may be an interesting adventure."

A Headliner idea with @Charlotte Winfield

"I'm not entirely sure it can be called sneaking out if you're with a prefect," he said and smiled a little. "I could assure you that you wouldn't get in trouble. Oh! I could say it was for research - maybe I could highlight your reviews and ratings on various sweets in an upcoming edition for the Hogwarts Headliner?" he asked. He didn't seem to pick up on her apprehension with some things but it wasn't because he was being insensitive - it was just that he was a very outgoing individual himself.

"I mean, if you're interested. If not, I fear that my knowledge of wizarding candy falls quite short as I'm not big on candies myself," with the exception of lemon drops. But there was probably a book somewhere in the Library that talked of them....but somehow he wasn't exactly sure that the girl would be interested in such.

Perhaps she wasn't interested in this interaction at all. He was blabbering quite a bit and hadn't even introduced himself yet. Maybe that's where he should begin. "Adventure IS out there, so the movie says," he quoted a Disney Pixar one but maybe she didn't know of it. "Just have to go find it. Anyways, I'm Simon. Simon Kincaid. Fifth Year Hufflepuff."

And he would do the tour of Hogsmeade if she so wanted and he would feature her in an article if she didn't mind. He would wait to get that information, as well as hopefully her name.

Prefect. The word dropped from his mouth and hit Lottie's ears with the strength of a boulder. Her angle of him changed entirely, and her jaw lowered slightly. With as much formality as she could muster, she muttered out, "Prefect. Of course." It took her a moment to register his proposal, but after a few brief seconds she gave it some consideration. "It could be a fun time. And I don't have much else on my schedule, of course. So yes, I'd be happy to."

She let him continue on for a bit, allowing herself to relax as his outgoing personality relieved her of her need to come up with educated responses to his foreign talk. His short movie quote caused her to furrow her brow, but she tried her best to hide the fact that the only movie she had ever seen was a grainy showing of Bambi her sister had snuck over and played on the (mostly unused) family television. She made a mental note to sneak more movies once she got back home.

"That sounds wise," Lottie smiled and nodded down at her lap. "Charlotte Winfield. You can just call me Lottie, though." Instinctually, she held out a hand for him to shake, and almost immediately regretted it. She was still figuring out the proper way to speak to other teenagers, and so far it wasn't going to smoothly.
