On Sunday morning, Matilde wandered out to the Hogwarts campgrounds to wait for her friend to arrive. She’d never been here before, but she knew this was where the students from the other schools were staying. She felt a little odd just waiting there, as one one was here yet. Would she be in the way of the arriving students?Feeling restless, she got up, and walked back towards the castle. She didn’t know what time the schools were arriving at Hogwarts. She couldn’t shake the feeling that she’d be in the way outside. So she decided to wait in the Great Hall, maybe get a snack and knock out some homework. She sat with her chin in her hand, drawing patterns and sketches mindlessly on the margins of her history of magic homework. After what seemed like a lifetime, the doors to the Great Hall opened, and in came a stream of students. Matilde was amazed by the scene, students from everywhere, gathered here, all together. She scrambled to her feet. The girl bounced on the balls of her feet as more and more students entered. She searched in the swarm of kids for the boy she was looking for. Then she saw him. Her face split into a wide grin. “Phe! Phelan!” She yelled, and ran toward him full speed.

• ────── • ────── •Phelan woke up on Sunday happier than he had been in months. The break from school had been so nice. He had hung out with his sisters constantly, joking around just like old times. He’d even managed to avoid his father for the most part. And now, coming to Hogwarts, finally. He hadn’t been able to go with the rest of the students in the fall because he’d been sick, and the nurse refused to let him go, despite his begging. That meant he hadn’t seen Matilde since…what, August? That might have been the most time they had spent apart since they had met.
He wasn’t really sure where Tilly would be. They hadn’t thought to plan a meeting place. So for once in his life, he followed the swarm of students into the castle, and into a very large room, with four long tables. Maybe a dining hall? Then he heard a familiar voice. He snapped his head in one direction, then the other, in that way you only do when you hear your name, but you’re not quite sure where it came from. He saw her just in time to catch her as she came barreling at him, arms outstretched. “Hey,” he said laughing as he staggered a bit to regain his balance. She laughed too, and his heart lept. He didn’t realize how much he’d missed the sound of that laugh, of her voice.
Only when Matilde pulled away, gently, did he realized how much he’d been clinging to her. He felt a little embarrassed, but she didn’t seem to notice, and quickly started up her usual stream of chatter.• ────── • ────── •
