River had been wandering the numerous bookshelves of the Hogwarts Library for a while now, dainty fingers trailing lightly over the spines of books and tomes. She was looking for something interesting to read. With a memory like hers with such perfect recall that it was impossible for her to forget something once she experienced it, it was difficult to find books that were both interesting and also not something she had already read back home at her family's library. She wasn't all that interested in rereading a physical book when she already had a copy stored in her mental library, but she also didn't feel like just grabbing a random book either.

Eventually she found a book titled, The Stars and How To Read Them, which was on how the stars influenced Divination. Yes, she knew that was a subject only taught to Third Years, but she wasn't all too interested in taking Divination as a subject next year anyway. She's more interested in taking Arithmancy, the Study of Ancient Runes and Care of Magical Creatures. She'll probably just self-study other subjects like this when she gets to that point.

Happy with her decision, River scours the nearby tables and finds a near-empty one with only one other person sitting there. Spotting the distinctly green robes, River recognised the girl from glimpses in the common room, although she knows they've never really interacted before. She took a seat and gentle placed her reading material on the worn wooden surface.

"Hi, I'm Coraline Callum!"

Startled slightly that the other girl suddenly introduced herself, River looked up from her actually really interesting book which had been written by a centaur of all things. Clearing her throat to dispel some of her awkwardness the Norse girl returned the greeting in her soft, bell-like voice, "Hello Coraline, I am River Luxley. Well met." Thankfully, River had completely gotten out of the habit of starting each introduction of herself with "River Luxley, Heiress of the Ancient and Noble House of Luxley". She knew it made her sound unbelievably snooty and uptight, but it had been difficult to ignore 7 years of etiquette lessons. She still ended with the rather formal 'well met', but it was certainly an improvement from before.

River smiled as the younger girl rambled on. It reminded her of her own First Year experience last year, though she had had a lot more struggles to not come off as standoffish and cold rather than being a bit hyper. The Second Year could see that Coraline was anxious about saying the wrong thing, a feeling River deeply empathised with. "It's not a problem Coraline, have you been enjoying your first year here at Hogwarts so far? I remember being anxious about making new friends with other people my age. I grew up alone you see, so it was difficult suddenly having to be around a lot of strangers that I didn't know."

When Coraline asked about her locket, River smiled as she brought her hands to the back of her neck so that she could unclasp it. She held the locket in her hands so that she could show the curious First Year. She trailed a thin finger over the etched in runes and explained, "They are runes, Norse runes to be specific. The locket was a gift from my father before I came to Hogwarts. This rune over here," she said pointing to the middle of the locket where the largest of the runes was carved into the silver metal, "represents protection and fortitude of the mind. It's meant to help me keep calm and focused if I'm stressed or overwhelmed. These runes the make up the runic circle around it are used to add more power to the main rune while also making this locket sturdier and more difficult to break."

River watched with a slightly amused gleam in her icy blue eyes as Coraline rambled on about her experience as a First Year, nearly choking on a laugh when she mentioned tripping down one of the moving staircases. It reminded the older Slytherin of her own experience that ended her up in the Hospital Wing. River grew somewhat worried when the younger girl started fiddling with her own necklace nervously. She was in a little bit of awe at the resplendent piece of jewelry, beautiful emerald jewels fashioned into the shape of a flower, matching elegantly with the blonde girl's Slytherin robes.

There was something so utterly endearing about Coraline that made River want to simply just talk with her for hours. The younger Slytherin was so energetic and peppy it was almost surprising that she was in the house of snakes, but River felt she fit the perfect image of the younger sibling that had haunted River's dreams throughout her lonely childhood.

Deciding to help the girl out a little, River reclasped her Nordic locket around her neck and let it settle just below her clavicle before gesturing to Coraline's necklace, "What about your necklace? Anything special about it? A present like mine or perhaps a family heirloom? The craftmanship is remarkable."

River observed the necklace with blatant appreciation, she just knew that if Ægir, one of the nifflers kept on her family's estate grounds and her favourite, saw the exquisite piece of jewelry, he wound make as many attempts as needed to snatch it up for his hoard. The emeralds inlaid in the golden frame shone beautifully, indicating that the younger Slytherin girl was in a good mood as she had explained to River. The engraving on the back was obvious in its love towards its blonde-haired owner, River could see it clearly in the careful way the words were engraved and the heartfelt message they conveyed.

River admired Coraline's happy expression as she put the necklace back around her neck and explained her love of flowers before smiling brightly at the older girl. "Although they aren't my favourite things to learn about, that being magical and mundane creatures of all kinds, there was a time where I was obsessed with learning every kind of flower I could find. I would beg my parents to by me encyclopedias and journals on flowers, their uses, the symbolism around them, etc. It was fun, but only really lasted a year before I moved on to something new to learn. I remember everything in the books anyway, so now they kind of just sit in my family's library. I can lend a few of them to you if you are interested."

"My favourites are these mundane flowers called violets, they represent modesty and humility, love and affection, faithfulness, remembrance, and spirituality," River says with a calm smile, "They're considered weeds, but Mother has a small part of one of our gardens dedicated to the small purple blooms. They're contained from spreading uncontrollably with a small ward around the plot of land."

The older Slytherin girl smiles at the youngers question on if she can draw, "I can draw. If you want, I can show you all the sketches I have posted up on my wall in my dorm next time we're in the common room."

River's face lit up as she remembered something, "You can even meet Nótt! She's the Bewitched Midnight Stalker my parents got me over the summer for my birthday. I would have brought her with me today, but she was still sleeping when I left my dorm."

River had already started thinking of Coraline like a little sister, her cheery personality endearing her immensely to the older girl, so River was excited to introduce her to her adorable pet. It had been odd walking about without the dark furred feline perched on top of her shoulder like a furry parrot, but that was easily ignored in the excitement of meeting Coraline.
