She introduced herself as Rose, 'A pretty name' Mylo thought, asking him what house they were in noting that she had never seen them before.

"I'm in Ravenclaw, you? I haven't seen you around the common room before so I assume you're not a Ravenclaw. Although I'm very bad with faces so I might just not recognize you." They add, having always struggled with recognizing people unless they have talked for a while or Mylo had seen them several times.

Rose started talking about a spell that could turn animagi back to their human form, she mentioned just walking around and casting the spell at all the animals you saw to see if maybe they would be an animagus. Mylo couldn't help but think about the poor animals that would just have a spell fired at them for no reason and just have a wizard looking at them waiting for something to happen, if he were a cat they'd find that very confusing so probably wouldn't do that any time soon. Even if they'd want to they'd have to learn the spell first. And as the animagus spell wasn't taught in class the anti spell probably wasn't either, and Mylo had no will to go to the forbidden section of the library.

"Must be something really bad if it's not taught and so few people do it, I'll probably wait until I'm older and then see if it's something I want to do. I'll probably know more about it by then anyway. I'll see if I remember and I might send you an owl." They mention, knowing their terrible memory.

As Rose goes to ask them a question they notice something shiny out of the corner of his eye, looking directly at it they see a nice small pebble, it was the perfect size to fit into the palm of his hand, with a few dents and scratches in it, and the sun seemed to give it a shine that he'd never seen before on a rock. Picking it up it was completely smooth and Mylo quickly pocketed it to add to their collection later. They had always loved just finding random trinkets and hording them, now was no exception.

Turning back to Rose she seemed to be looking at him expectantly, Mylo realized that she had asked him a question and the rock had completely distracted them from the fact they were having a conversation.

"Uhm, I-I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that. What did you ask?" They asked her nervously turning over the rock in their hand, hoping she didn't see them as too rude. She had been so nice to them and they had gone and gotten distracted in the middle of a conversation, 'Way to go dude, well done.' They sarcastically tell themselves.

"I'm a Gryffindor," she said, in response. A Ravenclaw. She could believe that. He didn't seem as outgoing as your average Gryffindor, or as friendly as your average Hufflepuff. Rose had always struggled with her placing in Gryffindor- she didn't believe that she was especially brave as far as people went, but the hat had to know something that she didn't, because it never seemed to be wrong, really. While her brother, Gabriel, had seemed nowhere near the stereotypical Ravenclaw, his placing in Ravenclaw had slowly shown her that the "smart house" wasn't all about caring about grades in school.

Mylo said something about it being really bad if not a lot of people tried it. She wasn't sure, at first, whether they meant that the process sounded complicated, or whether he meant that becoming an animagus sounded morally bad, but either way, she brushed it off. She also wasn't completely sure that they understood that her comment about going around the castle using the animagus spell was a joke. But that was okay- even if he was a touch awkward, Rose had found in her years at Hogwarts that sometimes the awkward people were the best kind. (And sometimes the put-together, organized people were the worst.) They concluded it would probably be better to do find out about it more when he got older, and Rose nodded in agreement. There were all kinds of things that younger years like Mylo didn't need to figure out anytime soon, and becoming an animagus was one of them. Someone could probably become one when they were a hundred years old, if they really wanted to.

Rose watched as they picked up a pebble, admiring it before pocketing it. She had kept talking as he did, assuming he was listening, but soon finding out they hadn't been. Rose smiled, inwardly hoping that he hadn't tuned her out because she was boring. "Oh, I just asked what year you're in. I'm a fifth year, so I'm assuming you aren't one of the higher years, or I would have seen you around the castle throughout the past few years." After hearing his answer, Rose gestured to the pebbles from which they had taken a particularly shiny one. "Are you a collector?"

A Gryffindor, those were apparently the brave ones. He'd met a few of them and they all seemed to be nice. What he though though was that the houses were more of a label than an actual definite personality trait. They were actually quite curious about how it properly worked.

He was still feeling guilty about the fact that he had gotten distracted by a rock and had missed Rose's question, luckily she repeated herself and didn't seem to be to annoyed at the fact that she had to repeat herself. She was smiling, but Mylo knew that sometimes peoples expressions wouldn't match their feelings, and as such was still nervous that she was mad or annoyed.

"Uhm, yeah, yeah I'm a first year. You wouldn't have seen me here before this year. Although with the size of this place it wouldn't surprise me if you don't see people for years." He tries joking, hoping it would land. "And Gryffindor seems like a nice house to be in, I like the colours, the gold and red work well together. I am curious if there's some sort of logic behind it, because it seems like some people could fit into multiple houses or fit into none really."

He knew they were rambling, but when they got nervous they either couldn't stop talking or completely shut down. Today it seemed like their mouth was moving faster than their brain. And as she had seen him pick up the rock - of course she had, he'd completely ignored her question due to it - she seemed to think they might be a collector.

"I wouldn't necessarily say collector, I just like shiny stuff. And this rock is really quite pretty, it unusual to have it fit so nicely in your hand and have such a shine. The rocks I usually found at home where quite dull and sharp. Not as round and shiny as this one. Again I'm sorry for ignoring your question, it wasn't on purpose. Do you want to hold it?" Cringing at how it seemed like their mouth would never stop they held out their hand with the rock it in, offering it to her to hold. They'd probably be repeating this conversation in his head for the future sleepless nights.

She laughed at their joke. Hogwarts was huge, so it couldn't be all that impossible to have somebody you've never met before. Even if someone was a fourth year, there was a good chance she had never even seen them. Maybe they always walked different ways than her in class changes, or had different friend circles. At a school as big as Hogwarts, it was easy to not know everybody. "Thanks. It is kinda nice," she said. Sure, there were rambunctious kids and sometimes it was a little too loud for her taste, but over the years she had gotten used to it, and didn't mind it so much anymore. "You know, I always thought I'd get into Hufflepuff. Or maybe Ravenclaw. It just seemed more like me. But... here I am," she said shrugging with a smile on her face. Among her Gryffindor peers, Rose often found herself a little different. Sure, she was outgoing at times, and she liked to do the right thing, but did those two things really make her courageous? Brave? Rose just didn't see it.

...yet. Maybe one day she would.

"You're right. I think about that, too," she replied, pondering. Some people did seem like they could fit in another house. "I don't know if you know this, but Ilvermorny- the American Wizarding school- has a process for if you fit into two or more houses. It's always made more sense to me. But maybe the Sorting Hat knows you'd fit into multiple, and picks the one you fit in best."

The redhead turned her head to watch the waves of the lake. It really was quite beautiful out here. She was glad she had found Mylo, even if she had freaked them out a little bit. He was quite good company for a day like today, where she could use a thoughtful conversation. They did seem a little tense, still, though, and she hoped that she wasn't making him too nervous. Maybe they could become better friends in the future and he wouldn't seem so tense. She hoped so, because they seemed like a very genuine and kind kid.

Rose listened to him talk about the rock. It was pretty- as they said. She shook her head. "Don't worry about it," she assured them. She knew it wasn't on purpose- the kid had just spaced out, that's all. "Sure," she said, holding her hand out to receive the rock.

"Do you have a favorite class?" she asked him.

'Ilvermorny, I think I've heard of that one, I believe that's the American one.' Mylo thought to themselves as Rose went on to talk about the intricacies of the sorting hat. It was something that still kind of puzzled Mylo, he was curious what the criteria where for the different houses and why some fit better than others, but that would be a discussion for someone who knew more.

She seemed to have been looking at the water as they had rambled on about the rock, but didn't seem too offended by their spacing out, and accepted their offering. She'd also had been talking about different houses she thought she might fit into better and it had gotten them thinking.

"I haven't really thought about belonging to another house, I quite like Ravenclaw. I'm not very brave or anything so I don't think Gryffindor would fit but I do like the sound of Hufflepuff, I like nature and animals quite a lot. And I like the idea of the common room being close to the kitchens." They added softly. "But I do like the idea of being sorted into multiple houses better than just one. Makes everything a bit more personalised I'd think?"

'A favourite class?' Mylo loved learning new things, so this was quite the question. "Uhm, if I had to chose one I think I would go with herbology, I really like learning about the different uses of the plants and such. But I really like all the classes, except flying. I found out I'm not good with heights at all, went flying after having just a few lessons, flew too high, panicked, and ended up really scaring another girl, Linda, who was helping me fly. I don't really want to repeat that." Realising that might not be information she wanted to know, he was know for oversharing sometimes, they quickly moved on to asking her the question back.

"Yeah... I'm also really looking forward to getting Care of magical creatures and Study of runes. What is your favourite one?"

Rose smiled at the thought of Hufflepuff as their talk of houses continued. "I've heard their common room is really cozy, too." Though she supposed Gryffindor's common room was probably equally as cozy- the huge armchairs and the fireplace were one of the best places in the castle to curl up with a good book. Mylo observed that the choice would likely make the sorting process a little more personalized. "I think so. I've never been to Ilvermorny," Rose said, shrugging, "But from what I've read and heard from a couple friends, it's a pretty cool ceremony. If you get chosen by two or more houses, you get to pick which one you want to be in. I've always thought it was interesting that there, you could have a say in what house you belonged in. I wonder if that parallels in any way to our sorting process." Rose handed Mylo back their rock, not wanting to forget to give it back. It was a pretty cool rock, though.

When the redhead asked them about their favorite class, Mylo responded with herbology, and then shared a story about how much he hated flying. But he quickly turned the question on her, before she could really respond to the first part. Maybe he thought his story was too out of line? Rose didn't think so- she thought it was a little funny, anyway.

Before answering his reciprocated question, Rose took a moment to reply to what he had said before. "Oh, yes, herbology is fascinating, and I can see how flying can be intimidating," she said. Herbs, even magical ones, seemed to be a much more definite science than some other forms of magic. With the right amounts of sunlight, water, and other properties, it was hard to go wrong with most plants- it was like a formula. But with some spells, it could be difficult to get the incantation, the wand movement, and even, sometimes, the emotions, behind spells. Rose had always appreciated the definitive nature of herbology.

As for her own favorite... "Oh, Care of Magical Creatures, definitely. I've always seemed to have an affinity for creatures and loved learning about them. Maybe one day I'll do something with all I'm learning about them," she shared. "But I think there's good things about all classes, too. I've also really loved Charms- they're so useful in everyday life."

"I heard they've got a lot of plants, and it's more like a greenhouse or something. It's kind of sad we can't go into other common rooms, I'd love to be able to see it for myself. Although the grounds are pretty great when it comes to nature." He adds to Rose's thoughts on the Hufflepuff common room.

Listening to her talk about how Ilvermorney works he took back his rock that Rose handed to them. Quickly putting it back into their pocket to hopefully avoid the previous mistake where he completely ignored the other girl. But she brought up a good point, he had overheard some students talking about how you could 'choose' your house here. Basically you could put in your own input or something?

"I heard some people talking about how you can ask the sorting hat to sort you into a specific house. I don't know if it's accurate but it would be cool if they take preferences into account. It might also be that the house sometimes sees multiple houses in someone and then if they ask for a specific one that they give it to them?" Mylo decided to add, wanting to know more about the sorting hat but knowing that it was pretty much a mystery to quite a lot of students.

She seemed to not mind that Mylo overshared, adding on that flying is intimidating. He knew that some students would wholeheartedly disagree with that seeing how some of them had been told off during class for doing things the professor hadn't told them to do, and that some of their friends seemed to love flying. They didn't understand it, but then again they'd found out that they weren't a fan of heights. So that probably had something to do with it. But he was glad that she agreed with them that Herbology was a great subject, loving the vast amounts of plants there were to learn about.

That Care of Magical Creatures was Rose's favourite subject somehow didn't surprise Mylo. Having met the girl first in her cat form he already had a feeling she liked animals. Why else would you want to be able to turn into one if you didn't like them?

"I really want to take Care of Magical Creatures when I'm a third year. I'd love to know what animals there are and how they're different from the ones I know. I've seen a few animals I'd love to know more about, and the professors seems really nice. And charms is really great as well, there's quite a lot of useful spells to learn for everyday stuff. Like the levitating charm, to lift stuff up that you've dropped and don't want to bend down. I also like the mending charm, I like the idea of being able to mend things that have broken." He states, quite enjoying the charms lessons.

"Is Care of Magical Creatures difficult? What kind of things do you learn?" He asks, remembering that Rose is taking the class and they could maybe get a head start on the lessons that they'd hopefully be following in a few years.

The redhead nodded when Mylo shared what he'd heard of the Hufflepuff common room. She'd heard much of the same from her Hufflepuff friends. "I've always felt the same thing," Rose said. "Though I'm sure some rule breakers out there do it anyway, either by being brought by their friends or disguises of some kind." Yes, there were plenty around Hogwarts who had it in them to break the rules, either because they wanted to see the common rooms of other houses, like Mylo and Rose, or just because they wanted to see if they could. Rose never understood the reasoning of the latter- maybe it gave people some good rush of adrenaline or some kind of power knowing that they broke the rules? There were far better ways to chase good feelings than breaking rules that were probably in place for a reason. Hogwarts, with all its magical students and creatures and classes, would be chaos without rules, and Rose had no problem with them.

But she did wish that she could see other common rooms. If they were anywhere near as cool as the Gryffindor common room, which she was sure they were, she felt a little like she was missing out on something.

"The grounds are quite beautiful," Rose agreed- a sentiment that she'd had from her very first year at Hogwarts.

After listening to Mylo speculate about the Sorting Hat offering choices, Rose turned her head on its side, thinking. "Hmm. I don't know. I didn't talk to the Sorting Hat when I was sorted. Maybe the only way to really find out is ask around." She shrugged. The Sorting Hat seemed to be trustworthy, though- it had placed people in houses for hundreds of years.

Rose nodded as they agreed with her. "Exactly- it's so helpful to learn about all the spells that you can learn, and much easier to learn them with a professor than with a book."

She smiled just thinking about her favorite subject. Mylo asked if it was difficult and about what kind of things they learned. "I don't think it's difficult, but everybody has different talents. I think you'd be pretty good at it, actually. Especially with your interest, I'm sure you'll be excellent at Care of Magical Creatures. Most class sessions you learn about..." she laughed. "Well, creatures! All about them- where they come from, what magical properties they have. You learn how to take care of them, as the name suggests, but also which ones to stay away from. You learn about their behaviors, how to identify them, and in some cases, how to defeat them if they are aggressive creatures." Rose could talk all day about this class, but since Mylo had asked, she was sure that he didn't mind hearing all about it. The fifth year loved even the homework from this class. Some classes, homework was a chore, especially when it involved research or essays. Rose could spend hours researching and writing essays on creatures without getting bored. It was actually pretty fun doing homework for this class, because if she didn't know all of the material, that just meant she got to learn even more about creatures. "It's a very hands-on class, which can be very refreshing, especially if you come out of a history lecture. I would say it's most similar to Herbology, where you learn all you can about all the different plants, except instead of plants, it's creatures."

Rose stopped her explanation to ponder a little. "You know, maybe I could teach you a little bit about them sometime if you wanted. I'm sure the professor wouldn't be against me taking you to learn a little something. I've never met a professor who was against a passionate and ambitious student. Do you have a favorite creature?" she asked.

He could very well imagine some people who would be able to get into other common rooms, Justin came to mind. Although the kid seemed to be a bit disorganised at times Mylo didn't doubt that if he wanted to he could find a way in and out of another common room. He probably wouldn't do it without a good reason though, which could be anything.

"Yeah, I do think that it's not that well protected if a friend can just bring you in. But they might have other measures, some portraits might tell on you, or maybe some magical camera's or something?" He mused out loud. Wondering if the school actually had something along the lines of magical camera's, it would be quite interesting.

She noted something about learning all the spells you can, which Mylo wholeheartedly agreed with.

"Yeah, I'm curious if there's any spells or anything we might be able to learn after graduation. I feel like there's a lot of spells they don't teach us here but that could be quite useful. And it is very useful to have someone model the spells so that you know exactly what to do, it's not always so clear in books. Although some people do study better from books, I'm not one of them though." They state, going on to listen to Rose talk about Care of Magical Creatures. It seemed to be exactly what Mylo had in mind for the subject, and Rose telling them that they'd be good at it filled them with a sense of shy pride.

Hearing the girls passionate talk about the subject didn't help Mylo's want to learn more about it, it actually only made them want to take the subject earlier, and not have to wait until third year.

"That makes sense, I think Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures are pretty much the same except one is with plants and the other with animals. Although you don't learn how to add the animals to a potion." He stated, thinking and then coming to a realisation. "Although I think some animals do have things that we need to add to potions, if I'm correct. Which I think you'd also learn about during the lessons?" They kind of wondered.

And then the magic words got said. Rose was offering to teach them about the creatures! Hearing her offer their eyes lit up with happiness, and a smile appeared.

"That would be amazing! I would love to learn more about the creatures, especially those griffins I love them, I also heard there's some kind of animal that you can only see if you've witnessed someone die, which is a little sad but it is fascinating though. I wonder if it's some kind of magical shield that makes them invisible or if there's something else. I do think my favourite magical creature would be a mooncalf, they are really cute. My favourite non-magical creature would be the cat without a doubt. I would love to have a cat but my pa's allergic to them so I'm not sure how that would work." They rambled on, nearly vibrating with excitement about learning more about the magical creatures. Not really noticing if Rose minded their rambling, excitement taking over.

Rose pondered that. There were probably some measures put in place, but she doubted it would be magical cameras. After a certain point of technological development, technologies stopped working in the castle, often short-circuting. Rose wasn't sure whether it was the magic interfering with it or if there were spells in place to prevent the use of such items. "I guess it's sort of similar to curfew- you only get in trouble if you get caught. And there's a pretty good chance of you getting caught because prefects or teachers or other staff members are all around the castle," she thought out loud. She looked back up at the lake, and realized at that moment it was starting to get darker. The sun hadn't quite reached the horizon, but it was nearing it. It would be time for dinner soon.

The redhead shrugged. "I'm sure there's all kinds of spells that they don't teach us in Hogwarts, just because there's spells for almost everything. They seem to try and teach us the most useful ones in our years here, I think, like fire, extinguishing, defeating boggarts, and important things like that. And I'm sure there's even some spells we might never end up using, too."

As the conversation turned from spells to creatures, Rose nodded. "Yeah!" she said, in reply. "There are a few things from creatures you add to potions, like, um... Jobberknoll feathers. They're used in Veritaserum, a truth serum."

The kid seemed to get really excited when it came to Care of Magical Creatures. She nodded as they rambled a little, but again, she didn't mind. They talked about griffins, which Rose agreed were cool, and what she assumed was a Thestral. "Yeah, those are called Thestrals," she added. The creatures were misunderstood, and they provided Rose with a mixture of a comforting presence and an off-putting presence. She hadn't seen them since her return to Hogwarts after her terrible winter break, and didn't even know that the carriages weren't truly self-pulled. Rose pulled herself back to the present, pushing the Thestrals out of her mind. "You remind me of me a couple years ago," she said, smiling, after he mentioned his favorite creatures. "I'd have to agree, especially on the cat part," Rose joked.

The auburn-haired girl sighed. "We should probably head to dinner, shouldn't we?"
