This year had been better than the last. Della was more outgoing—especially off her broomstick. The fall ball had been an especially pleasant experience. The night's dancing and merriment guided her through the new year with a renewed sense of positivity. Life wasn't so bad at a magical school after all. (Winning races didn't subtract from the experience either!)
But even with the spring starting to warm the air, Della's melancholy still came to haunt her. Sundays were the most trying. Another week was gone, and she was nowhere closer to discovering who her father was or if he was why she had received such a unique talent. The magical world had opened many doors for the supposed Muggleborn, but not all those doors were those she wished to go through. Della had always thought she was a good person. A person who did the right thing, who came from a good family.
But Parselmouths were not usually known to be good. At least that's what the books in the library said. Della had yet to meet someone else who shared her talent—though she had her whispers that there were others in the school.
Was evil something you could inherit?
This question was a regular refrain in her young mind. She had seen mysterious and unexplainable things in this magical world; who's to say that she wouldn't just wake up one day with an itch to do terrible deeds.
But even beyond all that—if her father was good, then who was he? Where was he? Was he a wizard? And why didn't her mother want to talk about him?
When these anxieties began to build, Della would be unable to sleep. And she would come here to the lake, watch the sunrise, and sketch. Drawing helped ease some anxiety—she let her mind shrink into the little lines and shades. Of course today, she was preoccupied with sketching snakes: She was putting the finishing touches on a large boa wrapped around a branch deep in a dark forest. Her sketchbook was filled with nearly two years' worth of snakes—only a few family portraits from over the summer and maybe one or two of a girl from summer camp broke them up.
It was easy to separate the darkness of the talent from the splendor of the creature she could speak with. Snakes weren't bad. Della had only met one, but he left a lasting impression on her. Maybe, sitting out here in the mornings, she was trying to let the universe know that she was ready for another conversation with a friendly serpent. One she could unload all her questions unto. (Though, it was unlikely there would be many snakes in this climate.)

Linda was finding herself thinking more and more about time she was spending with her uncle. The very reason for her interest in snakes and parselmouths. She remembered how she was asking him to teach her understanding this difficult to learn language. Linda even remembered all that time it took her, doing her best to become closer to be able to understand. Sometimes she felt sad she couldn't talk to them, but at least she could listen and enjoy.
She took one of many sketchbooks she had here with her and opened it on the last drawing in it: a beautiful serpent that even on drawing seemed to be saying something. Linda looked for a second outside the window and decided to go to sit in front of the great lake. Maybe she would draw something else today, she didn't know it yet.
Coming closer to the lake, she noticed someone who looked familiar. Della. They didn't know each other much yet, but they were teammates in broom racing. Linda stopped for a second, deciding whether she should try to approach and see how it will go or find herself another place to sit at.
Finally choosing to come closer, Linda noticed that Della was drawing something. Hey, do you mind if I sit with you? After coming closer, she took her own sketchbook, still opened on snake, and looked at the lake. Do you also like to draw? I come here sometimes and spending time with drawing or sketching. She paused thinking what to say else, but after some seconds she decided to give Della opportunity to talk, if she wanted to say or ask something.
She wondered why she hardly ever talked to parselmouths here, in Hogwarts. However, the castle was so huge and chamber of secrets existed just for them mainly, so maybe it wasn't that much of surprise. And given what most of wizards were saying about them, maybe some preferred to hide the fact they had this talent.
Linda glanced at her drawing and let her thoughts wonder about snakes. What's a chance to see some snake here, in your opinion? She looked at Della, questionably. That was perhaps strange question and could definitely come as out of nowhere. However, this was what she had on her mind, with all the memories and drawing in front of her.

Suddenly, there was someone behind Della, but they didn't startle her. It wasn't unusual to see someone else, lost in their thoughts at this time in the morning, but usually, while they were lost in their thoughts, they would leave Della to be lost in hers. From the corner of her eye, she saw a familiar flash of brilliant red. Linda, her broom-racing teammate, was asking to sit with her. "Hi Linda, of course!" She hadn't spent much time with the second year, but Della felt a fierce attachment to her team. She patted the ground next to her invitingly.
She noticed the redhead was also carrying a sketchbook. "Yes, I spend a lot time here drawing in the mornings. What are your favorite subjects to sketch? I like landscapes and . . . " She trailed off as she realized her sketchbook was wide open to a snake. Because she didn't know Linda well, she wasn't sure about the girl's aversions to the creepy and the crawly. Della resisted the urge to snap her notebook shut—that would be too obvious.
". . . And I like to draw animals." Linda definitely noticed her drawing because her next question was one that Della often wondered herself. Maybe Linda wasn't averse to scaly animals after all. "I think it would be quite rare to see one. I read that there are adders native to Scotland, but I'm not sure how many nonmagical creatures make it to Hogwarts. I did see a snake in my backyard once as a kid, but that was down in London. Still rare though."

Linda smiled and sat near Della. This would be a first interaction outside of broom racing. First opportunity to know the older girl more. To sketch? Would be landscape and sometimes I was drawing snakes. In fact I think I have a sketch in this sketchbook as well. Though it's mostly landscape, places and moments I want to remember always.
I see. I saw some when I was with my uncle. He has some. But I don't think I saw any here. Though I think some have snakes as pets here. Linda mused. Getting distracted by her thoughts, she looked at Della again. Wanna see my sketch? As she offered it, she opened her sketchbook ready to show snake or draw something new if the other girl didn't want to look.
As Linda looked in front of them, she thought it was rather beautiful in the morning. After some more thinking she realized she probably never came here at this time or came just once. But by some reason it felt different now. Perhaps because of the atmosphere in the morning air. Did you draw snakes? I find them so nice. I was petting some when was with my uncle. He taught me a lot, it's really great time there. Linda smiled at the memory and looked at Della.

To answer Della's question, Linda showed her own sketchbook—with the page open to a snake. What a coincidence. Della hadn't expected the other girl not to find Della's obsession creepy, but it was mind-blowing that she had a similar hobby herself. She could hardly think about the technique or talent of the other girl, she was too busy considering the subject matter. "Wow! Since we have similar taste in animals, we should draw some together sometime. Even now, if you're not too busy? That's what I was doing anyway." Della's mood lightened considerably at the thought of having someone to draw with. It would probably be more peaceful than being stuck with her thoughts.
Linda explained that her uncle had a lot of pet snakes and that she had heard people around Hogwarts even had them as pets. Della knew about that, too, though she hadn't yet caught a glimpse of one. She wanted desperately to talk to one of those students, see if they had the same talent as her, but they were proving to be reclusive. At the same time, what if they just enjoyed a pet snake? Owning a pet was one thing, talking to them was another. Della was also concerned about revealing herself accidentally. She would probably have to tread carefully in this conversation—not everyone was keen to accept a Parselmouth.
"Your uncle has pet snakes? That's pretty cool. I bet it's great to be up close to them—to be able to draw them, you know? Why does he have them? Does he have other pets? All I have at home is a golden retriever."

Linda was intrigued by the coincidence of their drawings. It was rare to see someone drawing snakes. In fact, Della was the first one. Sure. Let's do it. I have no plans and was thinking to draw something anyway.
Her uncle. It was definitely one of the greatest moments in her life to spend time with him. Was she supposed to reveal he was Parselmouth? She didn't have any problem with it. Especially considering that he was the one who taught her the language. Even if she still couldn't speak it and most probably will never be able to. Understanding it was great enough. He has quite some of them. It was nice to listen to him talking to the snakes. I can't talk that language, sadly. But he taught me how to understand it. You know, it was so great to listen and understand. Even if I can't reply using that language, so my answers were always in English. She chuckled, dreaming with the memory. Only as she finished speaking she realized that Della might have some prejudice against Parselmouth. But even if she had, it would be okay. Though perhaps Linda would feel sad. They seemed to get along well so far.
I revealed quite much, didn't I? I hope you don't mind me. I am fascinated by this. Though admittedly, there's no particular reason for it.

Linda agreed to properly join Della and draw for a while. The older Gryffindor started to rummage through her bag, "Here I have a few extra pencils, erm, a pen or two, some colored pencils—oh, that one's broken—and um, a few tubes of gouache paint. Oh! But no paintbrushes." She let the varied assortment of art supplies spill out onto the grass. Each was in a different state: some brand new, some used, some misused. Most of them were of muggle origin, but there was a magical ink here or there. Della was suddenly feeling self-conscious about her organizational skills.
Linda continued to explain her uncle. At first, Della didn't even realize what she had said because it was so nonchalant. But when Linda asked if she had revealed too much, Della played it back in her head. Linda's uncle could talk to snakes, and she could understand him—though not speak back.
The older girl was no longer concerned about her art supply disarray. She was internally reeling as she comprehended what Linda had said. She knew—and was related to—someone who could speak to snakes. And somehow Linda had even learned to understand the language! Della hadn't considered her talent as an actual language: She'd barely used it, and she never thought about how she said what she said. Comprehension was simultaneous. Did Parseltongue have grammar? Were there nouns, verbs, and adjectives? Pronouns? Did snakes say "I"?
Instead of letting these questions tumble forth as word vomit, Della knew she needed to play it cool. She was mostly certain she could trust Linda, but another part of her worried that this was some kind of trap.
"No, no, I don't think you said too much. I know there's a stigma around the whole speaking-to-snakes thing. But I don't really understand it. I come from a family of muggles, so it's not like that for me.
"So is your family full of wizards? Does the ability run in families? How do you learn it if you're not born with it? You must have a talent for languages in general!"

Linda felt lost for a second as she waited the older girl to finish taking everything out. The disarray and the state of supplies didn't bother her. She didn't even pay much attention to it if she was totally honest.
For a second she wondered what they were going to draw? Anything would be great, she thought. At least they were going to do it together and that's what mattered the most. As time spent together outside of the racing was already good enough.
I guess it's just historical. Goes like that from years ago. Though I'd expect it to be better nowadays since it's been quite some time. But I don't know, I don't have any negative thoughts about Parselmouths. She smiled. Linda didn't mind talking about it. She enjoyed her times with her uncle, even though she hardly ever talked about it. Only two people knew, and Linda was fine with it.
It is, as far as I'm aware. But perhaps there were muggles or muggleborn somewhere in the line. This ability is not very popular in the family, but some of them have it. It's fascinating for me, so I asked my uncle if he could teach me. It took some years till I eventually finally could understand what he's saying. But I guess one must be born with it to actually speak it. So, it's just listening for me.
