Wake Up
@Kyle Derook
It had all been so overwhelming. The cold, the memories, the dolls, the symbols... Faces kept flashing through her mind between Issac, Professor Morfran, the girls and... that thing. That terrible, petrifying thing that chilled her to her very soul. Her mother had mentioned it to her once or twice, warning her about their presence once upon a time, but no amount of reading in the library or stories from others could actually have prepared someone for facing them in real life.
How long she might've been in the hospital wing recovering from the ordeal, she couldn't have known. On the bedside table, cleaned and folded, was the sunflower handkerchief that had been wrapped around one of her worser burns, courtesy of the Hufflepuff prefect that had followed them into the woods. Her arms and palms had now been properly and carefully cleaned and dress to care for the burns she'd received when trying to help put out the fire at the Ball, as well as her other cuts and bruises from the misadventure into the Forbidden Forest. Her breathing had stayed short and shallow since she'd arrived, lungs still recovering from taking in so much smoke and ash.
The only thing they couldn't tend to, was her mind.
Feelings of fear, guilt, and coldness had been wrapped around her like a wet blanket, even in her sleep. However, finally the girl was stirring. Pale blue eyes dared to open slightly, flickering around herself before she heard a movement beside her, and slowly let her head fall to the side. There was a comfort in her line of vision, her cousin. Sure, perhaps they gave each other a hard time, they were competitive and they didn't know when to quit, but they were family. At least she knew she wasn't alone.
The Slytherin girl took in a shaky breath, "I didn't know trolls were allowed in here..." she breathed, forcing a small smile, not about to miss a chance to yank his chain a little.

Wake Up
Kyle had known his Cousin Illowy was also at hogwarts this year, he had seen her at the sorting ceremony and watched her get sorted into Slytherin. After all, what other house would they be in? The two of them were alike in so many ways and so it made sense they would be in the same house. Except they weren’t. He wound up in Gryffindor and he couldn’t bring himself to face his cousin. Partly out of his own shame in not making it into the right house, and partly from not wanting to hear her slag him for it. Then he heard she was on the medical wing and he dropped everything, probably breaking something and ran towards the wing.
When he got there she was still asleep, but she was breathing atleast she he felt a little less panic. He sat there with her in silence for awhile until she finally woke up and looked towards him "I didn't know trolls were allowed in here..." her voice was weak but Kyle was happy she didn’t lose her sense of humor
”They made an exception, nobody else could stand your smell” he offers his usual cocky smirk, but it was clear by his eyes he was still worried. ”how you feeling Magpie?” he asked, his voice softer this time

When they’d first been sorted, just like him, she’s expected to follow in her own mother’s footsteps and become a Ravenclaw. The last thing she had expected was to be sorted into Slytherin. That had always been Kyle’s dream. When the hat had announced her house, after the initial shock, it eased her at least knowing that her cousin would be a housemate... until the hat cried out with conviction that Kyle was to be a Gryffindor. That was even more of a shock then her own assignment. After that, she hadn’t seen much of him aside from passing through halls and maybe a wave once in a while.
At least he was here now, though. His retort tugged a smile from her lips. It was odd seeing him look so worried. Normally, together they had nothing but a challenging, mischievous glint in their eye, looking for the next chance to tease or one up one another. This was perhaps one of the few softer moments they’d shared in their lives.
Giving a soft nod to his question, the girl shifted in bed and pushed herself to sit up. Naturally she was tired, she felt weak, but Illowy wasn’t one who liked to stay down if she could help it. Pale eyes looked over her tightly bandaged hands and arms, “I’m fine... until mum get a hold of me.” She carefully flexed her fingers in and out of a fist, wincing slightly. The child then turned to her cousin and offered a sheepish smile, “She’s gonna flip at me...”

He let out a slight sigh. He was glad she seemed fine, Be he was mad she had gotten hurt and he wasn’t around to help. He was the one supposed to get roughed up and wind up in the medical wing, she was supposed to lord it over him and act superior. He decided that he was going to stop avoiding her...so what he felt bitter she wound up in his house. Someone needed to keep an eye on the spaz
”if were lucky, maybe she will pull you from the school.” he offers her a playful wink and looks around before seeing what he was lookin good. Kyle gets to his feet and and goes to grab Magpie a cup of water and walks back over to her and offers it. He knew from experience you needed to keep hydrated if you wanted out of the doctors care. At the very least it saved you some nagging.
With a shrug he sits back down and looks over the bandages on his cousin. With one final look around to make sure no one else was listening and he leans forward, his tone now taking on a bit of anger ”So...whose teeth am I knocking in?”

Illowy rolled her eyes when he suggested her mother might pull her from school. She certainly hoped not, in spite of everything, she still loved the school and her classes; even if it had been a rocky year for the most part. It had always been her dream, ever since they were little, to go to Hogwarts like her mother did, and learn to be the best witch she could possibly be.
Pale eyes followed her cousin as he wandered off for a moment, returning with a cup of water. Gratefully, she accepted it, sipping carefully and letting the cool water tend to her dry throat that still felt like ash was clinging to it. Watching Kyle from the corner of her eye, she couldn't help his disposition shift as he settled back into his seat. That look she recognized from the times were playful teasing turned into all out fighting was growing in his eyes... but it was almost more intense in a way she wasn't familiar.
She offered a small smile, holding her cup in her lap as she gave a small nod towards her hands, "This is on me. There was a fire at the ball and I was trying to help put it out..." it wasn't the whole story. Some wounds went deeper then skin. Even just thinking about what she'd seen in the woods made her to feel like her very blood was freezing in her veins. Her smile fell a bit as it played back in her mind:
Following Isaac into the Forbidden Forest to find that girl, then the Hufflepuff Prefect finding all three of them. Isaac had broken away from the group and what more could Illowy have done but gone after him? She'd promised him that if they went into that forest together, then they were coming out together. You didn't leave anyone behind, that's what she'd always been taught. Then seeing that... creature. That monster...
Absentmindedly, the girl reached to touch where it had grabbed her, held her, on the back of her neck. If there was any mark of it's touched, she couldn't have known. It's face would be burning into her memory, though, for as long as she lived. She could still remember how it felt as it fed off the two of them, sucking away whatever joy, happiness or innocence it could manage to steal before the Professor had saved them.
Her hand slid from her neck to rub her face for a moment, trying to push down the horrible, dark feelings it had left in her mind, "I'll be fine, though. Just give me a week or two and I'll be right as rain." she forced another soft smile, but with the memory pull back to the forefront of her mind, she found it difficult to make eye contact again.
Illowy was much like her mother, Rose Magnard. Emotion was often held no closer then arms length at the most when in public. It was always crucial to keep one's feelings in check, keep one's guard up, and to not make a scene. If a scene was unavoidable, it was always a rule that Illowy shouldn't start it, but certainly better be the one to finish it. Such rules weren't usually strictly enforced around family, though. Family was suppose to be a safe place. Yet, she couldn't help but feel her walls going up, and she wasn't even sure if it was for her own protection, or to try to keep Kyle at ease so he wouldn't worry so terribly. He seemed worried enough that for once it was her all bruised and patched up and not himself.

Kyle listened to his cousin speak, and honestly he could tell right away there was more to the story than she was telling him. It wasn’t like her to lie or try to mislead him so he could only assume it was because she either didn’t want him to worry or to make matters worse. He wanted to push her and force the rest of the story out of her but when he saw her reaching for her injuries and the general demeanor she had he decided against it. In time he would find out more, and if someone needed eat some dirt he would make sure it happened. No matter how long after the event it took to get there.
He still didn’t like that she got hurt but dwelling on it wouldn’t help any. ”alright Magpie, but it’s clear that you can’t be trusted on your own. Next time you are gonna get into trouble, make sure I’m there to watch your back. he gives her his cocky grin and arches a brow ”Don’t think it’s cause I don’t like seeing you smacked around, but if anything too bad happened to ya, ma and dah would never let me hear the end of it. And I hate gettin nagged at”

"Me?" she questioned as he accused her of being unable to take care of herself. Her pale eyes flickered towards him his as he flashed his signature cocky grin, mentioning how he'd never hear the end of it if she got really hurt again. The girl rolled her eyes, even if she knew it was probably true, "I'm usually the one who stays out of trouble." though right now probably wasn't the best defense of that.
She'd made out decision after another that threw her further and further into trouble. Had she simply never gone to the party, none of this would have happened to her. Had she not gotten involved in the fire, she wouldn't have been burned. If she told the teacher instead of following Isaac into the woods, they never would have heard about the odd flair, then Isaac wouldn't have let his curiosity get the better of him and he wouldn't have gone to find out. Then she wouldn't have followed after him to fetch him back and neither of them would have had to endure the dementor attack. It was a one terrible decision after another.
The girl tuck a still smoky smelling, tangled lock of brown hair behind her ear, "What about you? You're at least keeping your nose clean, right? I'd really rather not hear Auntie Katie going on about anything all summer" she teased.

Wake Up
Kyle and Illowy were thick as thieves growing up, though it was Kyle who was the thief. He would be the one who broke into places, stole things, broke things and was a general nuisance as he did any and everything he could to get into trouble. Even when he brought Illowy along he was the one doing the worst of whatever trouble was being caused and Kyle always made sure to take the blame if they got caught. So when she asked him if he was keeping his nose clean they both knew he wasn’t. The question was how much trouble he was getting into. Kyle chuckled and shook his head ”clean? Nah. But what’s a few fights and one or two people thrown into the lake. Only thing I got nicked for was robbing the potions room with Quin. Almost got away with it, we were This close to getting away with it too”
Kyle shrugged and looked around the hospital wing. Places like this made him uncomfortable, ever since the time he spent in a hospital after the...incident...before school started. He did his duty and made sure his cousin was ok. It was about time he got moving. ”you should get some rest Magpie. I’m gonna get going, take care of yourself, yeah?”

Illowy gave a small roll of her eyes as he informed her of his antics. She should've been able to guess that the boy wouldn't have been able to keep his nose clean, even if his very life depended on it. That was always his way. Where as she... she saw herself as the trademark goody two-shoes. Unable to bring herself to lie, mostly tagging along with him to keep damage to a minimum. Yet, even on the occasion of her direct involvement, he'd always cover for her. He always had her back and was unafraid of the consequences. She envied him for that sometimes; for his bravery and how he was so okay with throwing the rules out the window if something had to be done -- or just because he wanted to do what he wanted. Illowy supposed that was why he was sorted into Gryffindor.
Then there was her. Rules where her friend. Rules gave permission and set boundaries. Rules felt safe... tonight she'd broken just about every rule, including using magic unsupervised and going into the forest and she felt nothing but terrified the entire time. She couldn't just act, she had to think, weigh the pros and cons and then decide instead of just doing what her gut told her. She supposed that was what happened when you spend your entire life ignoring your gut.
Then came that which was inevitable; he had to go. Illowy let her eyes fall away from him, staring at the cup in her hands, pressing her lips in a tight line as she nodded, "Yeah... it awfully late." she spoke quietly and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear once more, "You be safe too, yeah?" she asked of him, peering up through nervous eyes, "Don't do anything I wouldn't do." Illowy forced a small smile, "And stop avoiding me like I have cooties or something, jerk." she teased, pushing his arm gently in spite of the stinging that radiated up her arm from the action.
