Koko had to give it to him – Colin McCoire was a damn good spellcaster. He might not have been a duellist, but his Obscuro was cast with the finesse of one. Koko was incredibly lucky she had been able to dodge, she thought; otherwise, she would have been easy pickings.

Well. Maybe that would have been fairer. Not that it mattered. Winning was winning.

She had cast Ventus, and despite her usually lacklustre spellcasting, this was a spell that hadn't yet failed her. She was beginning to begrudgingly like it. However, it did look as if its effects upon Colin were a bit painful. 'Sorry,' she would begin to say in apology before she cut herself off. This was duellling. Apologies were irrelevant; the point was to fight one another.

And that was why she was decidedly not a duellist. Only in the heat of the moment in Quidditch would she let her emotions shove aside her morals and allow her to even fathom knocking someone off their broom; this was no different. Colin was just a kid like her, and even if he had consented to this duel, that didn't mean Koko didn't have a slight lump in her throat after uttering the incantation. That didn't mean she felt good about any of this.

So maybe she hadn't changed.

At least it seemed like the Sneezing Hex's effects had worn off. That made her feel at least slightly better.

Obscuro was such an awesome spell! Colin was glad he thought of it. He'd flown blind a time or two and he'd cast it a couple times in races, and rather successfully! He reckoned it was a good strategy. He was pleased with the shimmery blue and silver cloth that flew between his wand and Koko's face. Colin was rather less pleased with his upperclassman's agility! Just at the very last moment, his opponent twisted aside and as Colin watched his scarf flutter away into the corner of the room, Koko's spell hit him hard!

He felt the rushing wind from her wand as it grew stronger! It caught at his hair and it dragged at his kilts! Colin felt his feet sliding across the piste! He was being pushed back by the wind! Colin stumbled and crashed to the floor on his skinny knees. "Uff!" he cried as the wind tumbled over where he landed at last, cracking his head on the edge of the platform. And as speedily as the wind had risen, it died down, allowing Colin to scramble to his feet and return to the fight.

He gave Koko a slightly lopsided smile. She'd started to apologise, and Colin's keen ears picked that up. He wondered why she'd cut herself off. No matter. Colin was having almost as much fun in his duels as had whilst racing, and that was saying something! There was no need for apologies here, just as there were none on the race course and likely none on the quidditch pitch. There would plenty of time for that when one of them lay broken and dying in hospital wing!

After dodging Colin's spell closely last round, it seemed that Koko had lost all the dodge in her. Cass watched with wide eyes as Colin once again cast an Incendio duo, though this time it hit its target. The jet of fire from his wand barrelled into Koko and set the edge of her clothing alight. Cass leaned forward even closer to the match, quickly moving their head out of the way to not get in the way of the spell that Koko had flung at Colin before turning into a human marshmallow being toasted over flames. Expelliarmus was well known, awesome and awesome. Though it didn't cause anyones impending injury by flame, it gave you plenty of time to do that as well.

In a move that any teacher would be proud of, Koko demonstrated perfectly the effects of the spell. Colin's wand left its spot in his hand and went soaring across the room. Koko may currently be on fire, but wandless and helpless Colin wasn't in a very good spot either. It was all crazy impressive to watch for the short first year. Why had they never shown up at an official duel before again? Why had they never dueled before? Well. Probably because most of the year had been spent not knowing enough spells to put up a good fight. But next year! Next year they were definitely going to set fire to a few things of their own.

"INCENDIO DUO!!!!" Colin practically hopped forward as the jet of flame erupted from his wand! "OWOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" He loved fiery spells of all kinds, and it was always such a thrill when everything came together like this. Especially in a duel! The wand, the spell --- Koko not evading in time! --- it was all there and Colin felt the rush! There was hardly ever a time when Colin didn't feel alive, but it was moments like this where he knew it with absolute clarity!

It was just at that moment Colin's eyes widened.

For just a brief moment, Colin could have convinced himself of an absolutely perfect round. But it was not to be. For just as the fire shot away from him, something else was coming his way!

"YEEEEEEP!!"

Another favourite spell of Colin's was surely expelliarmus. He'd used it a few times on the race track and he relished the sight of some opponent's wand flipping out of his hands and diving straight for the ground! And that's exactly what Koko sent his way! In a race, that would cause delay and put a crimp in the team's strategy. But in a duel, there was a clear risk Koko could put an end to him! There was no knowing what kinds of spells she could land on him!

He felt her spell tug his wand, Naur an Edraith, slip from the grip of his long skinny fingers. His eyes watched in dismay as the wood turned through air! His head turned, and then his lanky body followed! Colin pushed off the piste with his bare toes, but sadly, he could not fly without a broom! As his wand clattered away out of reach, Colin was reduced to a somewhat graceful leap as he took off after his wayward wand!

Koko had stared at Colin in focused trepidation, her nose scrunched up and her eyes narrowed as she tried to figure out what to cast... and how to cast it. It had certainly been a while; she didn't use Expelliarmus very much in her daily life. She finally decided and mustered the mental clarity to execute the cast, but, characteristically oblivious to her surroundings, she failed to see the dreaded Incendio Duo headed her way.

She bit back a yelped swear and leaped to the side – to no avail. The flames quite rudely attached themselves to her clothing, and she hissed at them, muttering something about Merlin's [redacted] pants to herself as she stumbled backwards. Yet... she wasn't angry, in fact, after the initial wave of eek, she began to giggle. Perhaps she was in shock.

Well, at least her Expelliarmus had landed! She watched, amused, as the younger Slytherin leapt after his wayward, disloyal wand. She had likely bought herself some time to come to terms with the flames still licking at her clothes and skin. Still in pain (but dealing), Koko surveyed the damage on both herself and Colin. They both seemed... okay. At least for now. It was still anyone's game.

Colin seemed to be very excited about fire. Which was understandable! Cass agreed with him. Fire was very fun. Loosing his wand however, was less fun. He ran along the piste after it, akin to a ballet dancer with his graceful (if slightly unnecessary) leaps. They supposed the leaps could help with... being hard to hit? Or maybe... Nope. They couldn't think of much leaping would do to help Colin. Perhaps he was frolicking. The middle of a duel did seem like a strange place to frolic though. Oh well, as long as once he got his wand back he would continue to cast spells while frolicking. Or without frolicking! The word frolic was starting to sound strange the more they thought it.

Koko however was not one to just let Colin dance his way to victory. She seemed to be coping with being on fire quite well, and chose to just ignore it and cast another spell instead. This was awesome! True battling-on-despite-being-on-fire behaviour (Was that a saying? They were sure it was). Unfortunately for Koko, the frolicking Colin frolicked on out of the way with ease. Ah well. Perhaps she needed to set him on fire as well. Perhaps she should set everything on fire just for fun.

"Come back here, you!" Colin called after his wand. After his leap, his feet hit the piste at an energetic lope as he followed its trajectory through the air. He wondered if bird animagi were allowed to shift and swoop up to fetch their wands, or if fox or dog animagi could change shape and run fast to catch them. Of course, that made perfect sense. If you had the ability, you should be allowed to use it!

His wand arcked up, and Colin gauged where it descend.

He knew very well that could never succeed at animagus, because of the whole mandrake leaf thing. The magic was complex, and the process would be complicated by the fact he'd be in Werewolf shape at least twice during the whole procedure. For a long time, he had wished that there were some deep magic, perhaps, that a Werewolf could learn. A way to transform at will. He was sure there must be! After all, skinchanging magic was clearly a thing.

His wand began its slowly accelerating descent.

He would have to research everything he could find about Werewolf lore. Perhaps there was a key somewhere in the depths of the Library, either here at school or perhaps at home. Perhaps there was something astrological? Moon phases and all. His green eyes focused intently on his wand as it fell. He took a step back, then another. Colin grinned, his pointy canines showing, fanglike.

Suddenly Colin shot forward! He leapt gracefully! One, two long strides and a kick off the piste sent him into the air. He met his wand at the high point of his leap! CLACK! Colin's teeth caught and secured his wand! He stuck his feet out, preparing to land on the piste again! "Uff!" He landed, and took off at a run!

Facing Koko again, he spat out his wand, and deftly caught it in his left hand. "Right!"

'Nec Divinos Crepitus.'

Koko said the incantation clearly and moved her wand correctly. Despite the searing pain from the fire, she had managed to cast, or so she had thought. But even as Colin chased after his wand, wizard crackers exploded... nowhere near him. Koko would not do anything to mask her astonishment. For all she had done to improve her accuracy, this was very near shameful. He had simply avoided her spell as if it was nothing, and to add insult on top of more insult, he had managed to snatch his wand while he was at it.

Amber eyes narrowed, Koko's nose wrinkled slightly, and her brows drew downwards. She probably looked like a pouty, petulant child. How could he have dodged so effortlessly while leaping like that? If she weren't losing, she would be impressed.

She sighed to herself as the fire on her body continued to rage. She really saw no point in extinguishing it. She had handled worse. She glanced downwards at the smouldering flames in disgust, but they didn't look as if they would be around for too much longer. Besides, taking time to fix herself would draw away from the real important part of duelling: winning.

Besides, there were a few other tricks up her sleeve... hopefully.

Once Colin caught his wand (in his mouth, for reasons unknown to them. Wouldn't that hurt his teeth?) he immediately launched back into the rhythm of shooting spells at his opponent. This time his choice was another spell Cass had only ever heard of, petrificus totalus. They were pretty sure the spell was meant to basically paralyse the target for a short while, which seemed like a very useful thing to have in a duel. Unfortunately for him, though Colin cast the spell beautifully, Koko managed to dodge it.

Koko wasn't one to sit around and wait either- she fired back a lovely spell which Cass had never heard of before, and she cast it well. The rain cloud that formed above Colin's head looked quite angry, and very determined to rain on his frolicking parade. Apart from that though, nothing much happened. Maybe the cloud was meant to... Discourage him? Or maybe something dramatic was waiting to happen over time. Either way, it was a very impressive rain cloud. Very rainy and things. Positively stormy. Cass gave a small cheer for Koko and her impressive rain cloud abilities. Colin could have a cheer once he managed to hit his target, although he wasn't doing badly considering the odds against him.

He tried to dodge out of the way of her spell casting, but not this time! Sometimes Fortune favoured the foolish, but not this time! His spell missed and hers moved in, like a cute wee storm front!

It began to rain.

Colin smirked at Koko. His green eyes flashed, but not with anger! The little storm cloud followed him like a rather wet, floating, dog! Colin's smirk turned into a smile. The cooling water pelted him and Colin began to laugh! The water didn't seem to flood the piste. Perhaps the magic just sucked it back up into the cloud? He splashed his bare feet in water and danced about!

Who knew duelling the rain could be so much fun! He shook his head like a dog, scattering water droplets everywhere! Cass cheered Koko for her wandwork, and Colin had to admit that his housemate really was good at magic! "UWUUU!" He couldn't help himself as the rain thoroughly soaked his clothes and hair. Welp. There was nothing for it now but try and strike again!

Colin raised his wand, prepared to thoroughly enjoy the rain as long as it lasted!
