While Dori wouldn't claim that Potions was exactly their best class, they were fairly adequate at it to get a good enough grade to be proud of it. There was process, exact steps, a discipline to it that Dori enjoyed. And they would never say it out loud, but sometimes it was nice to get a break from spell-casting. Today was the Invisibility Potion, something that could be exceedingly helpful in certain situations, though not any that Dori would probably see themselves getting into. But Elsi might, to try and take a courtyard nap in secret. Which was not something that Dori would ever endorse- but they would accompany him and make sure no one bothered him while he slept. There was just one time they took a nap in the courtyard and got water dumped on their head that they would never forget.⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛
Shaking themselves from this thought process, it was the end of note time about the potion and time to actually make the potions. Dori perked up, this was their favorite part. Though, it was probably everyone's favorite part. This time they were paired up- and Dori, with a horror that slowly dawned on them as the class pool for a partner dwindled... would be with notorious Percival Gray. Of all the people to be with. In this entire class, to be randomly put with. Their eyes darted around seeking some sort of secret escape route that refused to show itself. Their skin seemed to bristle with anger, though he had not done anything, yet, in a long time.
The last time that Dori had really interacted with him was behind the haze of Amortentia laced cupcakes that was broken by a slug emerging from him before they had done the horrid deed of kissing. Dori couldn't decide what would be a worse fate, kissing Percival Gray or becoming a hag. Nine times out of ten they would rather be a hag. A blood purist at worst and an absolute asshole at best, they just hoped he was competent in Potions. If he ended up ruining their grade he would have some things coming for him. What things- Dori hadn't decided. But certainly something awful!
With a terse smile that was kilometers from reaching their eyes they greeted him, "Percival. I'd quite like to work at my station today, I trust my equipment is in good condition, the less factors that can mess up our potion the better." A thought crossed their mind, a bit morbidly, naybe if they passed out- right this second, they wouldn't have to work with him at all. Instead, they turned on their heel and began marching back behind their station from where they had walked halfway in the classroom to meet him.⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛

Standard potions class was nothing to speak about. All you did was watch demonstrations, take notes, and try it yourself. However, now and then the teachers thought it was a good idea to put them into pairs. Percival didn't mind this most of the time as he just focused on getting the task at hand done with little talk. It was better that way, not only for him but for his poster who was sure to get a stern warning to keep focused. That changed though depending on the person, Dorion being one of them.
He hadn't talked to Dorion for quite some time, mainly from a mixture of long term personal study and the fact it was going to be awkward considering they had kissed. The Slytherin didn't have any deep routed hatred from that event, after all, it was mainly his fault for getting his fellow students into mortal danger. That was a long time ago and things have changed, if she wanted to hold that grudge against him then so be it.
Upon hearing the fateful news Percival sighed and looked over to Dorion who wasn't so pleased to be paired with him. He didn't blame Dorion but they had to knock it off with the childish spite. Rolling up his sleeves, he briefly nodded to her request "So be it, I hope that is the case too" he replied nonchalantly while moving over to her station with quiet tension. Stars, Dorion didn't half not hide her hatred.
As they waited to start, Percival took it upon himself to check that all the equipment was available in front of them. You couldn't be too sure when it came to making potions, if one ingredient or tool was missing it could spell disaster. Now and then though, he'd briefly look over to his partner.
"You're still angry with me aren't you?" he asked directly at first while examining one of the flasks "I suggest you put that to bed while we work together. We are learning now, not at a tea party or ball" Percy continued, before finally looking at the Hufflepuff for the first time.
"Got that?"

Dori had already reached the station and had started on pre-cutting some of the ingredients that the both of them would need to mix in later, figuring that Percival could handle the first steps. They would never admit it out loud, but he was a fairly competent wizard that could probably handle heating water or mashing something into the cauldron.⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛
They couldn't tell, but they were sure all of the short hairs on the top of their head were bristling with anger, frustration, at their Goddess for putting the two of them in partnership for a grade. Emotions really had no place in the potions classroom, or really anything in wizardry that required focus to make sure no one blew up. Though, there were spells to handle that. "Angry doesn't quite cover the feeling Gray. I'm sure with how absolutely insignificant I, and my lineage for that matter, is to you that you have forgotten most of our sordid history that would bring me to these feelings."
With a particularly aggressive cut that slammed against the cutting board they were using, they turned to him with an eerie smile. "But of course, water under the bridge. Or, into the cauldron perhaps. Since feelings aren't allowed at tea parties where you tried to trick me into kissing you." They feigned nausea. "Or, shall we not forget, the Quidditch field where you insulted my family that has done nothing wrong besides create a wizard like me. The biggest transgression against you it seems."
They went back to preparing ingredients. "So, I guess you could say. I got it. Perhaps you should do the magical components so my tainted blood doesn't fuck up your grade." They had heard that metamorphmagi's could have their changes influenced by the way that they were feeling, and for once they were grateful that they didn't have this ability. Everything about them would be flame red, the desire to burn Percival's ego into the ground ever stronger in his holier-than-thou presence.
He was really one of the only people that Dori had such an issue with in terms of their blood lineage, a muggle-born. A crime still in the year 2024 somehow. Astrea had explained the concept very early on to the very young Hufflepuff at the time who was bright eyed and bushy tailed in the world of wizards. Ah, how the great had fallen. In this case, their wonderment with how much better wizards were than muggles when that simply wasn't the case. They were equally awful in many cases. They would chock it up to the human condition or something.⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛ ⁛

To say that Dori was still angry was an understatement.
Everything from the chopping of ingredients, the tone in their voice, and even the words they used revealed the burning hatred Dori still had for him. The students at Hogwarts always loved to hold a grudge to the end of time, Dori was no exception "Well, that confirms that" the boy said with a sigh as he put down the piece of glass and turned to Dorian with a face that looked fed up "Let's just make things clear, you've heard of a hag slug right? the kind of things that burrow themselves into people and control them to the point where the host can barely do anything?" he said calmly, the corner of his lips showing a slight smirk "Yea, that was the reason why I tried to kiss you. I wouldn't have done so if I was in full control"
It was true, Gray had no interest in Dorion in the slightest and there was no point in time when he wanted to kiss them. Was it jealousy from the fact that they wanted to? who knew, but it was quite unusual for someone to be holding a grudge on something that was totally out of their control.
"And the little incident we had on the quidditch field? I admit, I may have gone a little too far. However, my expectations for muggles and half bloods coming into our world will always be high" the Slytherin responded honestly, owning up to a bit of his arrogant youth but reaffirming that he still expected a lot from those who were not born in their world. If they were truly grateful for being here, they needed to make the most of their opportunity.
"I also do not care for your "tainted" blood going over the components. I'd wipe it off and still gain a high grade after such a daft accident." Percival replied with a bit of sarcasm this time, his attention turned to the table to try and sort out the scales to weigh their ingredients.
"Once you've finished aggressively chopping our ingredients into paste it would be good to get the right weight. I'm sure we can both agree we don't want the experiment exploding in our faces..."
