The dark-haired boy just stood there, speechless, as Rosie walked away with the half-giant. A part of him always knew that this was going to happen. That they wouldn’t be able to stop Rosie from going with the bigger boy. That Rosie would go God knew where to an even more dangerous place. And that they would have to follow them to that dangerous place if they wanted to save her. There were just too many variables, too many missing data, and too many things to deduce to extrapolate the conclusions. And going to the forest would put them in an even worse situation.
Fucking half-giant, smooth talking, BASTARD!
The boy closed his eyes as he heard his best friend swearing behind him. Arc would have no idea what would happen if they went to the forest as well. They would have to play it by the ear. And he didn’t like that. He liked to see all the options he had, all the move that could happen before moving his chess piece. And now…Now he didn’t even know how many pieces were in the board! And what kind of pieces were there?! Presumably, he would just be a pawn among bishops or even queens. But then again, pawns had their usage. Enough of them, and they could even do a checkmate. But… Ah, there were too many buts.
"DAMN IT! Damn it..."
He could hear Raine sobbing behind him. Truth be told, he wanted to cry as well. And to swear. But it was neither the time to cry, nor to swear. Crying or swearing wouldn’t solve anything. It certainly wouldn’t save Rosie.
"She left, Arc. She fucking left with that fucking half-giant! I don't want to give up on her, Arc. I know...you know that something bad is going to happen if we leave her. But she just left and it's not like we can force her to come with us and there are no teachers around to help us and...and..."
The boy just stayed silent and let his best friend continue.
"Doesn't she know the danger she's putting herself in? I don't...I don't want to give up on her, Arc. I can't. We can't. I also can't think straight right now. You're the smarter one out of the two of us. You think things through and are more logical than I am. What should we do? We can't just leave her to her fate."
Yes. Yes, they could. It would be so easy. To just go back to the safety and warmth of Hogwart’s castle. To let Rosie fend for herself, to bear the consequence of her own mistake. They didn’t even know her name before this ball. She could be an evil girl that deserved whatever that was going to happen to her for all they knew. Heck. They weren’t even sure that something really bad were going to happen to her. And…And they had tried to save her, hadn’t they? Arc and Raine had done nothing wrong. In fact, they had done everything right! Then why did it feel so wrong? Why was the boy still making justification?

Arc opened his eyes as he made his decision. He exhaled as he apparently had held his breath for a few seconds now. He turned around to see the girl kneeling with puffy cheeks and reddened eyes. She was still pretty, though.

Let’s go.” Arc said after squatting down so he was eye-level with Raine. “We both know that it was the stupid thing to do to follow them, maybe the stupidest in our short life so far...But you’ll still go anyway, with or without me.

Arc stood up before offering his left hand while smiling. “You’ll be the death of me, Sage.
