Valentin entered the stadium with a headrush of memories to greet him. While he loved the place too much to feel overwhelmed, just being back in the epicenter of some of the most dramatic moments of his life made his heart race. Oh, the chances that slipped through his fingers here, and the moments of glory……. Meandering about as if in a dream, Valentin forgot that he had originally come to scope out the tents they’d reserved for his school. Instead, the energy of the encampment filled him with wanderlust. These grounds were a place where dreams could be reclaimed, and the sky above it was where he could transcend the weight of the past.

Turning the corner a hair too fast in his excitement, Valentin almost stumbled into a young blonde and, as he recovered his balance, his eye locked onto the golden glint of a pair of fine cufflinks. An amused smile lit up the White Niffler’s face, but the question was – who did they belong to? Looking up to see familiar waves of blonde hair, Valentin’s breath caught in his throat. It was him. No, no it couldn’t be. Blinking, shaking his head vigorously, Val tried to get a better glimpse of the young man’s face, but it was just slightly too turned away. Can’t let him get away… the truth… I must KNOW! Valentin’s hand reached out for the other’s shoulder, afraid the other would vaporize in a flash of light if he were too slow to prove that he was real after all.

“A– !” began Val, but his voice broke off when the other’s face came clearer into view. Was it “Alexander”? The water spirit? The… blinking hard, Valentin realized he didn’t know the other’s face anymore. What was he supposed to look like? Wasn’t it him? This was all extremely familiar, like… last summer… just a year ago, in that terrifying kissing tent. No, he wasn’t that water nymph then, either. This was someone Val knew even before he’d had his world turned upside down by some otherworldly siren. This was…

“Tristan.” It is, right? I… ? I have to be right. I’m not losing my mind. I’m sane. I’m sane. “I’m sorry, I almost mistook you for someone else… again.” Valentin’s expression was flushed with stress, but he seemed genuinely apologetic. “Hey, I never got to tell you… I’m… truly sorry about last summer. I didn’t know where you were coming from back then, and I misinterpreted what you were trying to do, and I was… You just triggered my memories of someone else back then, too. When you explained yourself I began to understand that you were experiencing that too, but then everything just went crazy after that. Someone issued my best friend a death threat and I just lost it.” Eyes flitting from gold accent to gold accent across Tristan’s outfit, Valentin took a deep breath and exhaled.

“I treated you really badly. I was panicking and that’s no excuse, but I felt like the world was going to collapse on me at that moment. I know it wasn’t reasonable. That was simply how I failed to deal with my crisis. Could you please accept my apology for being so rude and assuming unfair things about you?” Shoving his hands in his pockets, Valentin seemed angry at himself, but his eyes regarded Tristan with genuine care. “Even when you explained about your anniversary, it didn’t sink in for me until after you were gone. You must have been having a really hard time then, and then I made it worse.” Pulling his scarred right hand out of his pocket and extending it towards Tristan, Valentin’s lips pursed with the wish that they could make amends. He didn’t need to think about it a moment longer, since he’d already been beating himself up over it at various times over the last year.

“I think we both just reminded each other of someone else, and I didn’t deal with that well. If you could find it in your heart to forgive me, might I offer you a tea or something else you find appealing? Since it was around your anniversary last year, I suppose the same must be true now as well. Surely there is a vendor somewhere around here...”

"𝖵𝖺𝗅𝖾𝗇𝗍𝗂𝗇, 𝗂𝗍'𝗌 𝗒𝗈𝗎?"

“Yeah, it’s me,” came the cheerful, bashful response. “I’m okay. I had a really tough year, but so long as I keep people close to me, it’s all going to be alright.” After months of avoiding others and seeing the toll it took on him, Val was not eager to repeat the mistakes of his past.

“It’s okay. Thank you,” the seeker replied with a nod. Seeing Tristan offer his hand for comfort, Valentin knew it was time to show that he wouldn’t misinterpret such affection as mockery from the lad again. Taking the blonde’s hand and putting it onto his own left shoulder, Val smiled back confidently. Still, having done it, Valentin realized it had been a long time since he’d felt the touch of another and began to blush. “Yes, that threat to him was a part of it, but in all honesty, I was afraid that I would end up kissing you… I mean, not like kissing you would be bad, but I’d like such a thing to be real and for me to not be mistaking you for someone else in the process, I mean…” Batting his white eyelashes rapidly, Val realized his words were running away with him. Things had come out a bit differently than he’d intended. “I just don’t do such things casually. I know that other people went to the game for fun, and I guess that’s just the culture, but… a kiss from me carries a lot of meaning and importance. I could never trade one to gain something for myself – not even in the name of competition.”

Smiling as Tristan accepted his opposite hand in a grip of mutual forgiveness and acceptance, Valentin felt a weight melt from his shoulders. He hadn’t realized how much it had been bothering him until the wound between them began to mend. “I never meant to be so volatile and judgmental. I’m so grateful to have bumped into you again here.”

"𝖨 𝗐𝗈𝗎𝗅𝖽 𝗅𝗈𝗏𝖾 𝗍𝗈 𝗌𝗍𝖺𝗋𝗍 𝗈𝗏𝖾𝗋 𝗂𝖿 𝗒𝗈𝗎'𝗋𝖾 𝖺𝗆𝖾𝗇𝖺𝖻𝗅𝖾 𝗍𝗈 𝗂𝗍. 𝖨 𝗐𝖺𝗌 𝗁𝗈𝗉𝗂𝗇𝗀 𝗍𝗈 𝗋𝖾𝖺𝖼𝗁 𝗈𝗎𝗍 𝗍𝗈 𝗒𝗈𝗎 𝗅𝗂𝗄𝖾 𝖨 𝗌𝖺𝗂𝖽 𝖾𝖺𝗋𝗅𝗂𝖾𝗋 𝖺𝗇𝖽 𝖨 𝗍𝗁𝗂𝗇𝗄 𝗍𝗁𝗂𝗌 𝗌𝗁𝗈𝗐𝗌 𝗍𝗁𝖺𝗍 𝗍𝗁𝖾 𝗌𝗍𝖺𝗋𝗌 𝖺𝗋𝖾 𝖻𝖾𝗂𝗇𝗀 𝖿𝖺𝗏𝗈𝗎𝗋𝖺𝖻𝗅𝖾 𝗍𝗈 𝗎𝗌." Rather than shaking Val’s hand, Tristan’s thumb roamed over its contours like a small caress. The pink color of the seeker’s cheeks deepened to vermilion as heat crackled across the Frost Captain’s face. He was certainly not used to being handled this way, instead usually receiving physical attention in the form of gruff shoulder bumps and other sporty gestures. Certainly his friends hugged him freely on sight with exuberance, but Val was just as likely to get a scratch from physical affection with his peers as he was to receive a gentler display… and definitely nothing as tender as this. The tears in Tristan’s eyes demonstrated that his act was indeed heartfelt, and with his face as luminous as a red supergiant, the blonde positively radiated purity. Valentin blinked again and again as his heart dropped into a freefall, and all at once he remembered that feeling he’d experienced on the shore of the Great Lake. This was why Tristan reminded Valentin of Alexander, and why he was so deeply vulnerable to his power.

“I was afraid of you before, partly because I wanted to believe your spirit was so true but didn’t think it really possible anymore. I thought it must be a mask, but I see that I was wrong to doubt you. How very crude of me. Hope can hurt when it is dashed, but one must care for it nonetheless so that it does not wither away. Why is it that so many I meet hide behind one façade or another? Pah, what does it matter. We have this moment. Let us start again.”

Once more, Tristan offered his hand, and Valentin looked down to watch as he took it gently into his own. Then, with a playful tug, the captain shot his eyes over the encampment in search of a target. Not waiting to find where they were going, he began to walk together with the darling blonde, accelerating with long strides of newfound excitement.

"𝖨 𝗐𝗈𝗎𝗅𝖽 𝗅𝗈𝗏𝖾 𝗍𝗈 𝗌𝗍𝖺𝗋𝗍 𝗈𝗏𝖾𝗋, 𝗍𝗁𝖾 𝖽𝗋𝗂𝗇𝗄 𝖽𝗈𝖾𝗌 𝗇𝗈𝗍 𝗆𝖺𝗍𝗍𝖾𝗋 𝖺𝗍 𝖺𝗅𝗅. 𝖨𝗇 𝖿𝖺𝖼𝗍, 𝗐𝗁𝗒 𝖽𝗈𝗇'𝗍 𝗒𝗈𝗎 𝗉𝗂𝖼𝗄? 𝖨'𝗆 𝗌𝗎𝗋𝖾 𝗐𝗂𝗍𝗁 𝖺 𝗁𝖾𝖺𝗋𝗍 𝖺𝗌 𝗄𝗂𝗇𝖽 𝖺𝗌 𝗒𝗈𝗎𝗋𝗌, 𝗒𝗈𝗎 𝗐𝗈𝗎𝗅𝖽 𝗁𝖺𝗏𝖾 𝗀𝗋𝖾𝖺𝗍 𝗌𝗎𝗀𝗀𝖾𝗌𝗍𝗂𝗈𝗇𝗌! "

Just then, an itch at the corner of Val’s mouth turned into a crooked smile. He wanted to do it. He had the perfect opportunity to do it. Just as he was squeezing the other’s hand and taking a deep breath, however, an unexpected question followed.

"𝖠𝗋𝖾 𝗒𝗈𝗎 𝖿𝖺𝗆𝗂𝗅𝗂𝖺𝗋 𝗐𝗂𝗍𝗁 𝗍𝗁𝖾𝗌𝗍𝗋𝖺𝗅𝗌 𝖻𝗒 𝖺𝗇𝗒 𝖼𝗁𝖺𝗇𝖼𝖾?"

The question made sense, considering the time of year. Waiting would only sweeten the result, anyway, Val chose to believe. He wanted to learn all about this beautiful boy now as a priority anyway.

“Ah, yes. My friend Aida studies them. I think they’re magnificent, too, but if you have specific questions then I can connect you two. I began to see them after the loss of my mother, and then… no, nevermind. Tell me, do you see them? Do you find them beautiful as well?”

“Splendid. Let’s be friends!” Valentin seemed relieved that Tristan forgave him so readily, while for Val there was already nothing to forgive Tristan for. Despite the violence and hardship that had struck his family over the last few years, Valentin never could really hold a grudge. He could learn not to trust, but it seemed that even the most villainous types were not beyond the reach of his understanding and empathy. Just so, while his fearlessness may have been maladaptive in keeping the dark elements of the world at a distance, even the worst dives he took couldn’t seem to corrupt Valya’s loving spirit.

"𝘐𝘧 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘰𝘧? 𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘥. 𝘐 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥. 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳." The sheepish smile suggested to Valentin that he meant no harm, which was pleasant because the topic was particularly difficult. Along with the discovery of his father’s body, this had been the source of his greatest struggle over the last year. Still, when a question was put directly to him, Valentin knew he would not be imposing by talking about his own problems. With Tristan admitting to an ambitiously ever-hungry desire to learn especially helped put him at ease and made him want to fulfill Tristan's wish. Sighing and gathering a new deep breath of air, Valentin prepared to summon the phantom of his past.

“Ah… There was…” Exactly how was he supposed to explain that he’d been seduced and cursed by a water nymph that drove him to acts of madness for months to come? “I met someone, or something, on just one night by the lakeside, and I think he placed a fascination enchantment on me. Like, you know, how the sea sirens and rusalka and nixie just… have the magic to steal your… it’s all a blur to me but I haven’t been the same since. I don’t honestly know what happened that night, but… there was this beautiful blonde boy who seemed to have such a pure, radiant, holy spirit… I thought it was love at first sight, but only after I realized I was acting really crazy could I start listening to reason. Apparently he put me under his spell, and I don’t know what he took from me, but my memory is broken after that time and my beloved broom disappeared. Last summer in that tent with you, I had a mental block and had forgotten… but then when I saw you, you reminded me of him so much. I was afraid of being s—… it was spin the bottle… I was… having some real problems. I’m sorry I couldn’t really understand where you were coming from but I was kind of traumatized at the time. I know you’re not him, but because of the break in my memory I couldn’t be sure back then. See, I’m not usually so… volatile. This comes in the context of my personal culture, where I don’t kiss unless it’s out of real love. I never want to cheapen such a gesture, and I felt violated by what happened to me earlier, but I was also still drowning in my wish to find true love. That's why that kissing game just made me lose my mind, and I'm sorry that I ended up hurting you because of it.”

"𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘩, 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦, 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘰 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺. 𝘐 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘺 𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭. “What you say is true, about the possibility of life ending at any time for any of us. Even if a part of your past self was sadly lost, I can see that the person you are now without any masks is still beautiful and worthy of love. I myself almost died, and I lost both of my parents to murder. Yet, I agree with you for a reason unrelated to death. Indeed we should act in the ways we truly are and love with our whole hearts, but even if we were immortals, I think we should do that to honor the sanctity of truth itself. To live a lie not only insults the beauty of reality, but hurts ourselves and those around us.”

Valentin listened intently as Tristan revealed his dreams of unity with mugglekind and thought back to his conversation with Nikolai. Smiling at the beauty of Tristan’s vision, Val nodded in approval.

“The dearly departed would surely be happy to see you fighting for your dreams. Further, I couldn’t agree more about bringing together muggles and the magical community. The world needs not endure this division, and such great things could follow from overcoming those tired old walls between us. I support your ambition completely. Just like you and I now have a new beginning, muggle-mage relations should also have their new dawn.”

At Tristan’s suggestion that they go for a flight, Valentin rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment. After months of not carrying a broom, he had broken the habit he’d always had of never being separated from one. He didn’t feel quite like himself anymore, and a couple beads of sweat accumulated at his brow.

“That sounds fun! I’d like to see what kind of broom you have and how you maintain it. What kind of pet do you have? I just love animals actually. Again, I’m not a magizoologist like my friend Aida, but I just want to adopt all the strays in the world… ha ha ha. It’s kind of awkward actually. Aida wants all the animals to be free and wild, while I want to give them all a home. Anyway, yeah, I think thestrals are particularly beautiful actually. There’s just something about their dark color and the purity of emotions attached to them… It is a dilemma I suppose. If I had it my way, I’d find a way to make immortality work for those who want it, risks and all. I hate that people can have their lives stripped from them without their consent. I really hate that.” A biting gleam of anger stung the corners of the seeker’s eyes. Yes, his parents really had been murdered and he had issues with that – though buried deep. How was he supposed to keep his teams running and raise Durmstrang itself to new heights if he went around sobbing about his broken family all the time? Without flying as an outlet to deal with that and his other problems, Valentin had taken to isolating himself until recently in order to not take it out accidentally on others. Yet, such isolation had only made matters worse for the extrovert.

"𝘞𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵 𝘢 𝘩𝘶𝘨 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘮𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘸?" offered Tristan, and after a fleeting moment of tension, Valentin let down his guard. Just thinking about murderers tended to set his reflexes on edge.

“… Yeah,” admitted the seeker in a gruff sigh. He was fundamentally a deeply physical creature and had not been having enough of such sustenance lately. Accepting Tristan’s offer, a knot of emotion choked up the bottom of Valya’s throat. He wanted to cry actually, but would not yet allow himself to. They had only just smoothed over their relationship and he didn’t want to put Tristan in a bad position with the intensity of his own pent-up emotions.

"𝘓'𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘵, 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭," whispered Tristan before going on to explain some details about his tutor and Edward. Hearing about the other’s loved one dying in his arm sent a wave of sadness over Val’s face, but he continued to listen quietly until Tristan finished.

“I do agree that apathy is the true opposite of love. Hate and love are two sides of the same coin, and I believe the overwhelming indifference of the world is what allows a minority of malicious people to do great harm. People have to actually try if such poisons are not to spread and wreak further havoc. While we walk, would you tell me more about Edward?”

A flickering idea passed across Valentin’s face as he realized how to adjust his plan. It would do just fine to visit the tent area indeed.

xxxxxTristan was elated at the enthusiastic and relieved statement that Valentin made in response to his request to be friends and Tristan gave a playful wink and a smile. He was a whimsical sort after all. Tristan was excited for this new start in friendship as he truly did not have many friends his age lately. It was certainly a strange aspect of his unique nature, he had less friends and more acquaintances, conversed with those older than him far more often and those younger as well. As the topic turned serious, Tristan made sure to focus on the other and make sure Valentin was alright as the conversation continued. Although, he did not say this out loud, he was ready to turn the conversation to another topic if he saw signs of the topic being too hard for this newfound friend. Tristan imagined the hardship of being seduced by a creature in the night when Valentin began to explain that he was enchanted by the lakeside as if a sea siren had stolen his heart and never returned it. Tristan's face turned serious as he grieved for the other and he could not help but exclaim, "I grieve for you, an enchantment such as this is painful and unacceptable."

xxxxxTristan himself had never been enchanted as such but he could imagine the struggle it would have been. Valentine continued and commented on the beautiful blonde boy who radiated a pureness. Love at first sight would have been so much better than whatever situation it was. "I am sorry, it didn't turn out to be love, I wish for you that in a better world, it would have been love at first sight for you, instead of this wicked thing, but your heart is still pure and you still forgive so easily. You are so good, Valeri, if I can call you Valeri" Tristan was doubly sad for the other when Valeri revealed that his broom had disappeared as brooms were a great possession for people, indeed. At the repeated apology as a continuation to his story, Tristan gave a gentle smile and replied, "I forgive you, no worries about hurting me. I was a stranger then and did not know your story then. This is no longer true and all is in the past."

xxxxxTristan took a breath in and a breath out gently reassuring the other that all was truly in the past and that no grudges were held. He smiled and imagined what a different experience it might have been if he had not been blond and blue-eyed as he was. He would often change his hair color and eye color due to his whimsical nature after all. It was only that he hadn't during last year. Again he grieved with Valeri when the other revealed another saddening part of his life, that his parents had been lost to murder. Tristan could not help but grieve with the other, murder was a terrifying and terrible aspect of the world that people lived in but to experience it so personally was suffering beyond anything he'd wish on even his worst enemy. That out of that experience Valeri concluded that one must live out the fullest truth of one self and to not live a lie was a testament to the strong and kind soul the other person was.

xxxxxTristan smiled at the other's reassureance that the dearly departed would be happy to see him fighting for his dreams as he truly did hope that was the truth, "Thank you for your kind words, and thank you for supporting the idea that muggle-wixen relations should begin once more." When Valentin rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment at the offer of flying, Tristan observed and answered in response, for he was a very observant individual, "Only if you want to, of course. We can do anything you would like."

xxxxxTristan laughed at the dichotomy between the two friends Aida and Valeri, that one desired to free them all and one wanted to provide permanent homes. He smiled afterwards to show that he meant no harm and that it was a joyful and humorous laugh. Perhaps the opinion of the animals needed to be asked at that point. Tristan voiced this thought out loud, with mirth, "Perhaps you both need to ask the opinion of the animals themselves then, whether they want to stay or go free. My pet is a snake actually. His name is Saverin and he's beautiful."

xxxxxAs they continued to walk after the hug. Tristan began to talk about Edward. "I was sent to live with my tutor in the muggle world and I met Edward there. He lived across the street and he was my best friend. He was amazing and I had so much enjoyment and fun with him even though he was a muggle. I could never reveal to him about the magic world because of the statute of secrecy so sadly I knew the relationship would end one day, but it sadly ended a lot sooner than I expected."

With softness in his eyes Tristan expressed that he grieved with Valentin. Interpreting the tone and content of the blonde’s words, Valentin concluded that the other would divert onto another topic if Val showed too much distress. The seeker sighed – how was he ever to get it all out at this rate? While relieved to hear that someone thought his heart still remained pure after everything he’d been through, the river of his words began to run dry. It was a bad sign that the other would go easy on him like that. Val hated to be spared – spared topics, spared truths, spared the challenge of overcoming adversity. Yes, Val loved physical touch, affection, and words of love and support. If he had it his way he’d be touched and adored every day. Yet, he was still a man and had high expectations for himself. When treated with too much babying, a sick feeling rose like bile.

“It’s fine. Enduring the shame of my stupidity in being seduced and taken advantage of by a mere lake spirit is my burden to bear. It’s nothing compared with the real suffering of so many across the world who endure far worse without respite. I should be more grateful for the frankly ridiculous heap of blessings I take for granted every day.”

Running a hand through his mane of white hair, Valentin’s eyes strained at the corners. He nodded once at the coining of the name, ‘Valeri,’ accepting it without question. It sounded French and it was standard for his global fanbase to create nicknames for him rooted in their native languages. He did appreciate it, as every nickname he collected was to be honored as a treasure, but at the moment a banging hunger in his stomach was making demands again. Nodding back at Tristan in thanks, he did not appear ungrateful, but simply preoccupied. What had ever happened to his broom? It wasn’t even the kind of expensive possession that people would begrudge the loss of on financial grounds. He was a broom maker, a seeker, the captain. A broom was not just a broom to him – especially not that Arrow smited by Stribog himself. This was the very symbol of his freedom and his power, dipped in the blood of his scars, slicked with the tears of victory and defeat, and the vessel of memories of beloved friends from when he had fought the Reaper with a borrowed blade of light… and now it was gone, destroyed by whatever madness had overthrown him over the past few months. That nameless Arrow had been a part of him. It was born out of the very ashes from which his team rose, and now he didn’t even know how he had lost it, let alone how to give it a proper farewell.

At Tristan’s thanks that Val ardently supported muggle-wixen unity, the captain simply waved his hand. Of course he supported this great overcoming. He was owed no thanks but only wished to hear what he could realistically do to help improve the situation.

“It’d be just fine to go for a flight. It’s always educational to meet new brooms.” A pang in his heart reminded him that the old Arrow could never be replaced, and he hated the very idea of it. It was just as insulting as the pretense that one person could replace another’s in his heart. This was not a notion brought up by Tristan here, but the words of Val’s butler Sergei still stung. Sergei had always been pressuring him to replace Romeo’s place in his life when Val was struggling… which admittedly happened a lot and came at a significant cost to his sleep and morale.

“Oh, a snake you say. In that case I can take you up on your challenge of trying to learn your Saverin’s opinions. Unlike Aida I don’t have a knack for communicating with most other creatures… save perhaps cats.” The white-haired boy’s tone turned upwards in amusement, as the simple mention of felines seemed to warm his heart. Further, Valentin seemed relieved by the information about Saverin, and his expression relaxed as if he were simply being asked to meet with his own family. Tristan went on to explain his past with Edward, and Val listened expressionlessly without interruption until the Slytherin was done.

“I see. The statute is a terrible wall, and I wish we could break it down. Would you tell me what happened to Edward in the end?” The captain knew it would be a rough topic, but he wanted to give Tristan the chance to go into it as deeply as he wished. Theramin had already admitted that he didn’t really have anyone his age to talk to, so it could be that he had a lot pent up about it. “I’d be honored if you’d tell me more about how that made you feel.”

xxxxx The moment Valentin sighed, Tristan quickly went over his tone and the other’s demeanour, his observing nature going to high gear. He deduced perhaps that the other would not appreciate his plan to divert the conversation if there was too much distress. Often, he had met with people who were the opposite and he had made the same mistake of assuming once more.

xxxxxThis was confirmed by the tone of Valeri’s reply, “It’s fine. Enduring the shame of my stupidity in being seduced and taken advantage of by a mere lake spirit is my burden to bear. It’s nothing compared with the real suffering of so many across the world who endure far worse without respite. I should be more grateful for the frankly ridiculous heap of blessings I take for granted every day.

xxxxxWith genuineness exuding from his eyes and tone, Tristan apologised, “I apologise, I may have assumed again that you wish for me to change the subject if your distress grows, as others were apt to desire, but I was mistaken. I apologise again for assuming you are like other people. I also do not want you to change the topic if I am in distress as well. I was hypocritical in my actions as I believe that for myself, to share even when it is painful, is the best step of action. Yet, my care for you made me wish something for you that I myself would not wish someone would do for me. It is quite silly of me, if I could describe it in a light hearted manner.

xxxxxHe thought for a moment in order to answer the self-berating the other displayed. Tristan answered with a warmth in his tone, a gentleness that displayed his maturity, “Yes, others in the world struggle but is not your struggle as valid as those around you? Does not one need to work through one’s sorrows first to take care of those that have suffered more?” His tone displayed a genuine desire to know the other’s answer to the question and a sincere hope to understand. There was a moment where Tristan saw the other’s spirits dampen after his comment about the broom and he wondered deeply what plagued the other so. “Your mood seemed to have dampened, what is it that troubles you so? How can I help you so that you are the best that you can be?” However, Valentin had still said it was fine to fly, so Tristan continued with that in mind.

xxxxxThere was a strange amicable connection between him and the other. As if, he would be able to reveal the truth in every instance and he could trust the other to not manipulate it or use it against him, that trust could be placed on the white haired quidditch captain in front of him. This was perhaps a true friend indeed. Tristan was indeed apt to be paranoid and closed off as an instinct but this person deserved all. Valerí seemed to be a person that deserved all, always.

xxxxxPerhaps that was why when the other commented, “Oh, a snake you say. In that case I can take you up on your challenge of trying to learn your Saverin’s opinions. Unlike Aida I don’t have a knack for communicating with most other creatures… save perhaps cats,” Tristan could not help but smile gleefully and reciprocate with a secret of his own, “You like snakes? My family has always been intertwined with this species and the animal has a special place in the Theramin bloodline. Our family manor has rooms that only those who are Parselmouths can open. Our family’s tradition is to take their magical children to a snake emporium to see if we have the power that runs in our family veins. Snakes are beautiful aren’t they? I started speaking to them when I was four, soon after my first instance of magic. My grandfather also was a Parselmouth himself, although my father Augustus is not.

xxxxxBy the time the rush of this information rushed out of his mouth, Tristan blushed and gave a shy smile at the other, looking a little cheeky and a little embarrassed at the same time. Tristan’s smile displayed a little of the cheeky and mischief loving characteristics that he had within him. He had compared himself to Loki as a child after all. Felines of course always warmed his heart. There was a legend in the Asian lands that intrigued him. He had heard of it while in the Muggle World and he’d always wanted to research whether or not the myth was true or which magical animal the legend originated from. The cat had nine tails rather than nine lives. They were fierce and cunning. But this was a thought for another time when he was not in conversation with another.

xxxxxWhen the other asked genuinely if he could learn more about Edward, Tristan gave a smile slightly tinged with sadness but ready to remember the good times of the person that was his best friend. He started by saying bluntly, “Edward died from a car accident. He was hit and was taken to the hospital. His sister knew I was close to him so she brought me to my friend in the hospital with the family. He died in my arms, after the family said goodbye. We were young but somehow more aware of our connection to each other than other children, somehow more mature. It was a time of great grieving for me because I knew magic would have been able to save him and yet I could not reveal any of it. We have blood-replenishing potions and spells that can stop bleeding and grow back skin and bones, there would have been a way to save him. There is a spell Vulnera Saneteur for blood wounds and any magic user would have been able to at least slow down the process of death in order to save him. But I couldn’t tell any of them about this. That was why I was so cold in my first few years but I have healed from my bitterness and my anger and as I said before, vowed to live in their honour.

With Tristan’s apology, Valentin simply waved his hand to disenchant the blonde’s concern.

“I understand, and now you do too. I’m not worried.” Going on to berate himself over his mistakes at the Great Lake, Valentin’s expression darkened further. However, Tristan responded again with a warm and gentle tone.

Yes, others in the world struggle but is not your struggle as valid as those around you? Does not one need to work through one’s sorrows first to take care of those that have suffered more?

Wincing visibly, Valentin knew his weak spot had been promptly located.

Your mood seemed to have dampened, what is it that troubles you so? How can I help you so that you are the best that you can be?

“I… know that you’re right Tristan. It’s just that every time I try to ask for what I want, I get terribly hurt by it.” Valentin’s eyes closed as he mentally travelled back to 2022 when, on the ledge of his crystal tower he promised to finally ask for something of his own… then to the ship alongside good old Charles where they promised mutual confession… to the center of the London quidditch stadium pitch where Valentin finally asked to have his wish fulfilled, but when denied, had to rip the sword of life from his own heart and give it back. The year died with new traumas, and so rose 2023 from the ashes with the new hope of Valentin’s spring. The serpent of Akbugha itself told him the same eternal truth, and so Valentin gathered up his courage to try again, only to meet with another year of heartbreak after heartbreak after heartbreak. Now with the dawn of 2024, Valentin hoped to reassert his wish again with the goal of liberating Gellert and Romeo by freeing his own voice once more…… only to face rejection again.

“It seems that for all I strive to grant the wishes of others, no one is in a position to bring mine to life. This is what troubles me. I already have a hard enough time asking for what I want, and now I don’t see any reason to do so again when all it creates is more strife for everyone involved. How am I to work through my sorrows when there never seems to be a viable solution? I tell myself I’m not asking for the impossible, but the struggle never ends.”

Tristan eventually went on to talk more about the place of snakes in his family heritage, and Valentin nodded respectfully.

“Yes, thank you for telling me. Snakes are indeed very beautiful. I also come from a line of Parselmouths, but I’m… defective. My blood is too thin, and so even though I understand it, when I speak it comes out as gibberish. I feel like a failure. Still, I would like to meet your Saverin and get to know them a bit, and I’d be charmed if you would speak to me in our shared language even though I am broken in my ability to respond.” Then, after a moment of thought, a brillant hope overtook Val’s face and voice. “Do you know anyone who can fix me? Fix my voice, my ability to speak Parseltongue… Magic can heal all kinds of things, right? If you don’t know how, would you take me to where there are more people like us? Surely someone must know how to restore my native tongue!”

After hearing Tristan’s story continue about Edward, Valentin shook his head sadly.

“That must have been so terrible. I’m sorry. It’s no wonder you have your convictions about breaking down the barriers between the wizarding and muggle worlds. I agree there should be no such secrecy and that upholding such ludicrous self-imposed limits is exactly what ended Edward’s life when it could have been so simple to save him. I’m angry on his and your behalf. I hate it. I hate it.” The seeker hissed with a severe sigh but waved his hand as if to send the feelings away on the backs of the winds. “May your wish to tear down these walls be granted.”
