“Protego!”

That particular charm was not one Cassius often used but he was immediately glad he did so as he was targeted by both Dmitri and Bridget. Better yet, it was cast particularly well allowing the Ravenclaw duelling captain to redirect it back towards his opponents. One of those redirects hit true and while the other missed, Eun-ji was able to make the best of her own well-cast shield charm and managed to hit Dmitri.

Thus far this was a surprisingly even affair -- one Cassius had not expected given the experience discrepancy. However, Cassius knew his team and they trained well. He knew just how scrappy they could be when needed. Whatever happened, they were going to put up one hell of a fight.

Eun-ji couldn’t remember whether she ever used Protego in any of her previous duels but now seemed like a good time do so. Of course, she hoped to not just protect herself but cause some damage as well, which is why she made sure to stay extra focused while creating her shield. And voilà it worked! The ventus cast her way by Dmitry rebounded and hit its caster instead. Similarly, Cass created amazing shield of his own and while Dmitry managed to dodge that one, Bridget’s flames rebounded nicely. Good…Eun-ji always hated that spell.

But of course, fate is a cruel mistress and so there had to be some failure to balance it out. This time, it would be Damion, failing his fog spell. Still…things could have been worse. This was still manageable.

Sometimes Bridget could tell when an opponent was thinking of using a Protego, the possibility creeping into their thoughts with perhaps a shade of desperation and flashing through their eyes. This was not one of those times. She'd kind of thought Eun-ji might, at some point, since they'd been targeting her pretty consistently, but she realized her mistake with Cassius too late. The flames had already left her wand, and she barely had time to register the summoning of an invisible barrier, much less avoid her own spell coming back at her.

It stung like fire always did, but especially because it was her own magic's strength burning her. Between that and the blood dripping from her nose, that tired, heavy feeling was creeping in. Not that she'd be letting it win yet, because her whole team was still in this and they had work to do. Ravenclaw couldn't keep their shields up forever.

As the fog finally cleared from Astrea’s personal sphere, it was a combination of sheer luck and skill that unfortunately met her teammates’ spells before they could meet their rightful targets. The fearsome experience of double ricocheting Protegos, reinforced with a collected desperation fitting of higher level duels, would almost be admirable had they not been at Slytherin’s disadvantage.

Restricted to maintaining her concentration and brilliantly illuminating the piste, Astrea’s stifled potential could do little to aid her fellow Vipers except strengthen her resolve and silently count down the rounds. Their underclassmen were clever, yes, but she was far too experienced to believe that such unfamiliar birds could match a flash of fang from snakes in the mud. After all, cleverness could only do so much without the ambition to use it to its fullest potential…

It was really hard to track. Dmitri tried to disable Eun-ji with a nice Confundo, but his spell went towards Damion and eventually missed. Bridget tried to burn Eun-ji down and succeeded, while Astrea tried to cast Ventus, but failed hard. The tiredness from the match was there.

On the other side, Damion covered Astrea and Bridget in the fog again, Eun-ji went for a Ventus as well, but made it through into Bridget, and Cassius did cause some chaos by Crackers, which eventually spread to Bridget and Astrea, dealing some significant damage.

It was halfway through the duel, Dmitri thought, as he counted the number of spells they had cast and the time they had spent trading blows back and forth. At this point in time, he had already caught too many mistakes his team had made.

"If I were still your Captain, there are some choice words I would have had to say to you just after this duel." He'd say to his teammates, not looking at them at all. "But I'm not. Although, I am sure you both know what you did poorly."

“Nec Divinos Crepitus!”

While not a pyromaniac nor a pyrotechnic, Cassius always felt a certain thrill when casting spells that went boom. Even in his too fast approaching adulthood that would likely not be something he would find any less exciting than he did when he was a first year. Luckily for him, duelling provided the perfect outlet for using rather uncontrolled spells in a controlled environment.

The round had gone surprisingly well for the Ravenclaws but the duel was not even close to being over. The fight went on.

Bridget knew what her team was capable of, and this was not living up to it. Astrea had a rare backfire, which of course cost them. Dmitri's spell flew wildly off course. She at least managed to set Eun-ji on fire this time, but not without facing wind, exploding crackers, and her own still-burning fire. Bridget had been duelling for long enough that her pain tolerance was pretty high, but it was starting to add up.

And of course Dmitri had to choose this moment to break their typical team silence. She just sighed. "As your current Captain, I would like to point out that I'm the only one hitting anything right now. It would be great if you joined me." It was said pretty deadpan, she was more concerned about the blood dripping from her nose and the creeping fatigue than anything Dmitri said, but they did all need to get their act together.

For the first time in years, Astrea's magic was working against her. The subject of a rare backfire and once more surrounded by dark fog, this was far from the great duel they were due as senior duellists. Yet despite her captain's-- former and current-- concerns, Astrea refused to feel further chastised. Their performance would be well-dissected following the duel's conclusion and throughout the summer, and yet the Vipers had yet to lose their typical thorniness amid the leaves. Readying herself for a hopeful comeback, she shook off the buffeting, traitorous wind and brandished her wand amid the cloud cover.
