Siobhan was so excited to have been paired up with someone for the Quill Pals program. When the summer camp had been announced, Siobhan's heart had dropped when she realized that she would have to miss out on a fundemental developmental activity with her peers. She was needed to return home and help out with the harvest and preparations for the next seasons planting.

However that didn't mean she couldn't talk to people across the Owl system. Since wizards didn't have phones it would still allow her to communicate with her friends without thinking that the whole year had beens some sort of illusion...

When she had recieved her quill pals letter, she had immediately opened up her pot of ink and pulled out some of her parchment to immediately respond.

Hi Mylo!

My name is Siobhan McCarty. I think you already knew that because you sent me the letter first but it's still a pleasure to meet you. I am also 12 and I belong to Gryffindor. It's wonderful that you enjoy reading and nature. It's amusing to me because I will not be attending Summer Camp because of nature but I wouldn't miss it for any other reason. My family lives on a farm and it's nearly harvest time so it's as muggles say, 'all hands on deck' and I'll be home the whole summer. But you can always find me in the greenhouse. I've become rather attached to the plants that we've been growing this year and I'm going to miss them over the summer.

Have you read anything interesting this year? I've read and reread our Herbology and Potions textbooks. Everything about Potions and magical plants is just so interesting to me and I'm so excited for next year to learn the next years curriculum. I was planning on practicing the brewing instructions for a few potions before I leave for the summer. I'm hoping I manage to get an O on all my exams but I'm confident I will in Potions, Herbology, and Transfiguration.

Ah- This is a very long message already, I apologize- I tend to talk well- write more than is necessary... But I have some questions- What's your favorite subject? Do you have a favorite food? Are you planning on going to Summer Camp this year? I hope this is alright to ask.

A response! Mylo had not expected it to come so soon, but of course they didn't mind it. It just made them happy that Siobhan wanted to talk to them and he hadn't scared her off with their letter. Deciding that it would be better to get a good night sleep and write the response in the morning they went to bed, wondering what to write.

Getting out their quill, ink and parchment the next day they wrote a response, hoping to make it a good one.

I hope you won't miss too much from camp if you can't attend. Although it is always nice to spend time with your family, even if most of it's spend doing work. What kind of things do you have to do around the farm? Is it like looking after the animals or planting stuff? I've always wondered what it would be like to live on a farm, it seems like it could be quite hard work.

And what kind of plants have you been growing in the greenhouse? I didn't know we were allowed to do that, I image it's not the dangerous ones though.

I've read a few books, The spooks apprentice is one I really enjoyed and I'm seeing if I can get the rest of the series but there's like 13 of them and I'm not sure where I'd keep them all.

I also love potions and herbology! I really like learning about how different plants have different effects and needs to grow and how one small thing can change a potion in a drastic way. What's your favourite potion? I think mine is the burn healing paste, I've seen someone with some really bad burns and I know how much they can hurt and I like the idea of being able to help people not be in that much pain.

I think I'll be able to get decent scores for all my classes, I just hope to get above an E in all of them, although any passing grade would be amazing for flying, and I'm very curious as to what we're going to learn next year. I feel like that will be the same every year though.

Please don't worry about the lengths of your letters, I don't mind! Mine might be long as well as I like to make sure I don't miss things.

My favourite subject is I think Herbology, I love plants and nature, my favourite food is pesto pasta with chicken. I love pesto and could eat it almost daily and if I'm allowed to I'd love to go to summer camp, I just need to check with my parents but I think they'll let me go. What's your favourite food?

Having written their response they noticed how long it was, they had surprisingly warmed up insanely quickly to Siobhan, something that didn't happen very often. But the style and vibes of their letter made them feel more at ease and thus they didn't overthink too much when writing, resulting in a longer letter. Siobhan was so excited to recieve her next letter from Mylo. He seemed so interested in her life and she was just as equally interested in theirs. She wasn't surprised at all when the owl swooped in and dropped the next piece of mail in her lap over breakfast. She had gleefully opened it and read over, before pushing her plate off to the side and beginning to write her newest reply.

Hi Mylo!

I'm so happy I found someone who likes herbology and potions! I'm actually writing half of this during potions class right now- I finished all our book work for the day and I'm waiting for my potion to brew. I quite like the bruise removal paste, I'm constantly having to take care of my older brothers and younger sister because they're constantly getting into bruise worthy scenarios. I'm quite pleased that we've been taught this recipe. Though there is one potion I'd like to brew eventually whenever we learn how to, or potentially whenever we're actually allowed to is a Mandrake Restorative Draught. I've been reading some of the far more advanced textbooks out of the library and this potion seems like it could cure nearly anything. Especially for me, seeing as how I'm not quite adept enough with my spell casting- I worry I could potentially harm someone in the long run. I have all O's in most of my classes but the occasional E plagues me... Careless mistakes afterall...



Apologies for the dirt smudge- I had to move this part of the letter to the greenhouse. To answer your question, I haven't been growing anything that doesn't meet Professor Toussaint's expectations for what is appropriate to grow in her greenhouses. Personally, I am more interested in flowers and what I like to call 'immediate medicinal herbs.' These being plants such as thistle, mint, and dandelions. I purposley grow these since they can really be helpful with inflammation! But I am very interested in magical horticulture, and Professor Toussaint has such a interesting persona-

Oh- now I apologize for the tomato soup stain, this had to be moved to dinner as I had a bit of a mishap in herbology that needed to be fixed. Speaking of favorite foods, my family and I are vegetarian! It's quite difficult to find enough to eat during dinner and breakfast. At lunch I typically survive off of a salad but I really do wish that the tables offered something more... sustainable... My favorite food in the whole world however is my ma's colcannon! It's absolutely delicious, and I've never had anything better.

My word, this letter has gotten long and I do apologize- I seem to have done that alot this letter. I hope you're able to go to summer camp! It seems like it would be ever so fun.

Another one, this one came quite late in the evening. But nonetheless Mylo opened it happily wondering what Siobhan would talk about now. The letters they had been sending back and forth so far had been longer than they'd expected but he wasn't really going to complain. And although they actually had to go to bed they got up and started writing their response, hoping to be able to send it off before curfew.

Hello Siobhan,

What potion have you brewed? And did it turn out well?

I know what you mean about the bruises, my little sister also gets quite a lot of bruises but that's mostly due to her loving to do things that aren't really safe. I do think that unless they are really bad that it's better to let them heal naturally, as it helps them remember what hurts them and what doesn't. It does help them learn and avoid stuff that could harm them in the future.

That potion does sound really helpful and worth learning, I'm looking forward to learning any potions that can help people. I really like the idea of having those on hand in case someone needs them. I do like the idea of learning a potion that could maybe protect and not necessarily heal as that would also be very useful.

I don't like the idea of getting bad grades, but an E is really good! As long as I've understood the material I think I'd be okay with anything, as it means that I've got some more things to study and I can improve. And it's why I make sure to read everything at least twice to avoid careless mistakes, but sometimes they happen and we can't do much about that.

Also I don't mind the stains, it gives the letter character. I do wonder what we'll be able to grow once we've graduated, as some of the plants I've heard about seem to be very dangerous and I'm not sure even adults are allowed to grow those. And I love mint! It makes very good tea, I didn't know they could be used for inflammation though, might be good to know. I do love plants that have nice smells, I like just sitting around them and seeing all the insects around them and smelling the scents they have.

Again I don't mind the stains! Also I'm sure if you talked to the house elves that they would be able to get something for you, I doubt you're the only vegetarian in the school and it's magic after all, I hope it's not too difficult to get something. And I'm glad you like your mom's cooking, it's something too look forward to when we go home for break!

And I don't mind the long letters, I think I might have written a bit more as well. I also really hope I'm allowed to go to camp, I've heard a lot of things and it sounds really interesting.

Siobhan was so excited that Mylo was such a prompt responder. Everything that they had written seemed to really align with her ideals for friends. Mylo shared her sentiments for keeping potions on hand in order to help people in need. She wondered it they would both join the healing internship once their third years rolled around. She had been extrememly interesed when she found out about the opportunity and sorely disappointed when she had been instructed to wait until she had reached third year.

Siobhan had been drifting off in the middle of her History of Magic lesson when inspiration to write to Mylo had struck again. Pulling out a separate piece of parchment and re-inked her quill as she thought about what exactly to write to him.

Hello Mylo,

I hope you recieved an answer about wether or not you would be allowed to go to Summer Camp. I recieved a photo of my family's farm and it's practically overflowing with produce ready to be harvested. I'm particularly excited to use my field of strawberries to make my Nana's special strawberry preserves recipe. My family and I make it every year and it always sells out when we take it to the famers markets. What kind of breakfast foods do you like? Or do you perhaps prefer supper foods?

I had a moment to reflect on when you agreed about making potions to help people. Have you thought about applying for the Healers Internship? I am planning to do so once our third year rolls around. I'm particularly excited for it. I hope to bring some muggle healing skills into play as I'm very interested in my family's Celtic, Scandinavian and Romani culture's medicinal plants... I think its an important aspect of my culture and I want to share it with my peers. Are you solely British? Or do you have other blood that flows through you? I apologize if it is invasive to ask. Oh and I haven't brewed anything on my own just yet, in response to your question. I haven't got any money to purchase ingredients at the moment but I am hoping that I will make enough money over summer to buy what I cannot harvest on my own.

Have you been studying well lately? I found it difficult to do so in my common room. It is entirely too noisy and rowdy with the anticipation of the end of the year approaching. I've taken refuge in the abandoned classrooms and surprisingly, in a hidden passageway behind this statue of a one eyed witch... If you can kick the spiders away every other minute or so it's quite pleasant.

Speaking of studying, I'm supposed to be researching something for History of Magic but I can't give an actual toe at the moment. This class, as interesting as it can be, is boring me to sleep today. Normally I wouldn't condone the use of class time to 'goof off' but I fear if I don't attempt to redirect my attention, I will be leaving this class with a bruise on my forehead and a detention slip.

I tried your trick with asking the House Elves for something more appetizing and it worked. Thye had a much nicer spread of vegetarian food near my end of the table. They're quite talented. I think I would like to meet one if it's possible. I've heard from my Hogwarts: A History textbook, that there's a way to enter the kitchens but I wouldn't attempt to break in unless I was sure I could make it in without getting caught.

A few days later a reply had arrived, another long letter. Not that Mylo minded in the slightest, and they even preferred the longer letters as it gave him more to write about himself. Having read it pretty quickly they grabbed a quill, ink and parchment and started writing their reply immediately.

Hi Siobhan!

I'm allowed to go! I'm actually quite looking forward to it, I wonder what kind of things we'll do and if we'll learn anything at camp, although I'm not so sure if everyone would enjoy learning things in the holidays. But you never know.

I hope the produce has come out nicely! And that it's not too much hard work, although some people like that. And strawberry preserves sounds amazing, my pa makes an amazing strawberry pie, and any other pie to be honest. What kind of things do you guys do with the produce? And to be honest I like all kinds of food, although I do think my favourite would be pasta, with any kind of sauce. And maybe pancakes, although I don't like having too many of them. What about you?

I have not thought about applying for that internship, I didn't even know it existed. But that's something I might look into, it sounds really interesting and like I could learn a lot from it. I do think combining muggle plants and magical plants could work really well as some muggle medicinal plants are really useful and not everything has to be magical.

I don't think it's invasive to ask, I'm fully English though, although I do love learning about different cultures and how different people live and everything. Maybe you could tell me about your cultures? I'd love to learn more about them! And I get what you mean, some of the ingredients we use are so expensive. I don't even want to know how much more expensive they're going to be when we learn more difficult potions. But it must be a lot better to harvest your own stuff as you also know what you're getting then and it gives your potions an extra feeling of 'I made this' I'd like to think.

I've been studying in many places, the common room can be quite rowdy like you said. And the abandoned classrooms are really great, I don't mind spiders or dust so they're really nice and quite, I've gone there to practice spells before and it was really nice. Although it took a while before I got the spell.

I've found that the grounds can be quite nice to study as well if you can find a spot away from the castle, especially if you can find a nice tree to lean against or something like that. I didn't know we had an abandoned passageway though, it sounds interesting.

I always say that as long as you're not being disrespectful to the teacher and still understanding what you're doing in class that anything is okay to do, everyone works differently. Although I do find History of Magic a fascinating subject, there's so much to learn about and to know about the magical world. And I'm glad that you got some better food! The house elves are great in that aspect, although like you said I don't want to get into trouble for going into the kitchens when we're not supposed to do that.

I hope you enjoyed the part of the lesson you did get to take in!

Siobhan had recieved Mylo's letter and while she had intended to write back swiftly, the end of the year encroached upon her faster than a tiger searching for it's prey in the jungle, leaving her scatterbrained mind to forget about responding. When she was cleaning out her class satchel for the week she had found it and promptly sat at her writing desk in order to respond to them.

Hello Mylo,

I'm happy to hear that you've been granted permission to attend summer camp! I have no doubt that you and all our peers will have such amazing adventures whilst you partake in the summer festivities. I apologize that this letter is in late response. Truthfully, the end of the year has been quite hectic in terms of preperation for our finals and preparing to disembark on the train ride back to Kings Cross Station. I had recieved your letter, and then it was lost to the void that is my school satchel. I hope you aren't as frazzled as I am at the moment.

I haven't heard from my parents about our fields yet. I assume that everything is catching up to them s well but I am quite excited to see my siblings again. I have 5 brothers and sisters, so our family has plenty of help but can get increasingly chaotic. I am the fifth youngest and the only "witch" in our line. I say witch in quotations because my family does practice magik but they are not considered to be magic. We believe and practice Celtic and Nordic Magic, with a little bit of my great grandmothers Romani practices thrown in as well. When I learned that in our third year we have the opportunity for Divination, I was ecstatic! Do you think it would be too much if I tried to do three electives at once? Oh and I know you said your family was fully English but what is your family like? Do you have any siblings? Pets? My family and I have a border-collie named Kipper and my oldest brother has laid claim to our family cow as his pet, whom he named Moonshine.

I apologize if this letter is shorter than my previous ones, I just wanted to owl you at least once more before we headed off back to our homes for the summer.

Hello Siobhan!

Don't worry about it being longer between letters, studies have been hard for me as well and I have been forgetting some things here and there as well. I'm really curious how summer camps going to go though! I wonder what kind of activities we'll be doing and how the sports will go, as I've heard that some of the other schools that will be attending will be doing sports against each other.

I can imagine that it must be nice to see your family so much after not seeing them for a while, I know that I miss my little sister, even though she can be quite annoying sometimes, and my parents. But I can't imagine having 5 siblings, although that must be normal for you.

I've also heard about your magic's, they're really interesting! Do you still practice as you're now a 'witch'? Sorry if that's an insensitive question, feel free to ignore it. I've also heard that divination is really interesting, personally I'm really looking forward to doing study of ancient runes. I love learning new languages like that and I find old writings like runes really interesting so I'm curious as to what we'll learn in those lessons. And I think you could for sure do all three of them! It might be a lot of study but if you enjoy it it would be worth it!

I have 1 sister, she's currently 8 and very exited to go to hogwarts so I hope she'll get her letter too when she's 11. I have 2 dads, my pa teaches music and tried to teach me some but I never really picked it up, and no pets. I'd love to have a cat but my pa's allergic to them so I'm not sure it's a very good idea.

Don't worry about it being shorter, it was still nice to hear from you! I really hope you enjoy your summer and that everything goes well on the farm!
