Wednesday | 11 January 2023 | after classes, just before sunset
Aaron took off his beanie then wiped the sweat from beneath his growing bangs. Despite it being around 5 degrees outside, exercising like this really worked up a sweat. The fourteen-year-old (fifteen next week) was sitting on his Moontrimmer from a spot twelve meters above the ground. He was effortlessly balanced on his broom while one hand messed with his hair and the other held a hula hoop. One that had been clearly charmed to be many times bigger (and definitely heavier) than a normal hula hoop. It could probably be used by a giant at this size.

Aaron's dark brown eyes looked towards the sky. The sun was starting to set already which meant he didn't have much daylight left. It was really annoying that during these winter months they had so little daylight after classes, the sun was normally setting by 4 or 5 pm. It wouldn't be a problem normally since he usually trained in the mornings before class, but after winter break his sleep schedule had been a real mess. It was hard getting out of bed earlier than he had to when he had so much trouble sleeping these days. So Aaron had hoped this last week he could squeeze in trainings after classes, but the sunlight faded so quickly. Oh, well. He'd make do. Or maybe he needed to find a way to light up the whole training pitch after dark.

Turning his attention back to the training time he did have left, Aaron put his beanie back on his head. With a slight grunt of exertion, Aaron once again threw the hula hoop as high as he could up into the air. The fourth year had been training a lot the past few years, so his bulking arm and upper body strength launched the hoop pretty high up. As soon as the hoop left his fingers, Aaron whistled sharply and suddenly his snowy owl Chae-rin darted through the hoop, weaving back and forth through it as the hoop got higher and higher. Aaron gripped his broom closely, then suddenly shot forth with a burst of speed, rocketing through the hoop as it reached the peak of the arc he'd thrown it in. As he went through it, he took out his wand. This was the part that he'd been practicing a bit more. Casting while flying was tough for someone like him, who struggled casting while just standing on the ground.

"Caerulimillious!" he shouted, aiming his wand up into the sky. And this time, it worked! From the tip of his wand, a huge burst of blue sparks jetted further up into the air and exploded in a shower, forming a nice little light show. Aaron found himself grinning in triumph, taking a moment to appreciate his success. But after realizing he was grinning, the expression quickly wiped itself from his face. He shouldn't be so happy about something so basic to others. With a slightly more serious expression on now, he turned to the trick recovery. The hula hoop had begun to fall, so he aimed his wand at the hula hoop now.

"Reducio!" he called, but this time the spell fizzled. He was distracted. Shit. That was a year two spell, it shouldn't be so hard! He took a quick breath before trying again. "Reducio!" he said once more, and this time the spell hit its target. Once the hula hoop was its normal size again, Aaron whistled again and made a hand gesture, prompting Chae-rin to fly down and successfully catch the hoop before it hit the ground. Aaron was really proud of the progress they had made in their tricks together, so he allowed himself to smile at that much. Since the sun was getting lower in the sky though, Aaron pointed his broom towards the ground. Probably time to wrap things up. As he got closer to the ground though, a familiar figure was standing on the pitch below.

"Hey, Lindsey," Aaron said, offering a smile towards his fellow Hufflepuff. It didn't quite reach his eyes, but it was unlikely she would notice. "What brings you here? I thought you switched to duelling," he commented, smoothly dismounting his broom so he was standing a foot or so in front of her. Lindsey was a familiar face from classes and Hufflepuff, not to mention them being on Quidditch together during second year. They didn't hang out too much beyond those class and common room moments, but she was really nice company when they did. "Not that it means you can't still fly or anything, I just haven't run into you here in a while," he was quick to add.

Before Lindsey even had a chance to respond though, a hooting echoed behind Aaron's ear and suddenly Chae-rin had perched on top of Aaron's beanie. Her grip was relaxed, having learned not to grasp too harshly. "This is Chae by the way - well, actually, I think you met her last year, on the train? She and Napoleon got along," Aaron said, a genuine chuckle and grin crossing his lips when he remembered Lindsey's cat's name.

Aaron has a Calming Presence.
Your presence simply puts others at ease, if it is your carefree personality or the trust others have in you, the result is still the same. With you there, perhaps through your encouragement, your allies are able to better focus.

There seemed to be some strange, magical power that was completely unknown to her, which brought Lindsey to the Quidditch training pitch today. Okay, she was no longer a Quidditch player and would celebrate her duellist-anniversary in a couple of days, and her last class wasn’t set somewhere outside at all. But after descending the stairs to the entrance hall she did not turn and take the way down deeper into the Hufflepuff bungalow, she turned her heels and walked out of the castle. Enswathing herself tight in the black-and-yellow scarf, the colour she had been loving dearly for three years and a half already, she stood alone near the gate, hesitating where she should pay a visit to. The Great Lake? The courtyard? She had always been quite a tactician, which meant she adored making plans beforehand, but today it simply didn’t work. Everything was…on the spur of the moment, and before she could even realise she was already on the way heading for the Quidditch Training Pitch.

Though she hadn’t been here for quite a long period, the pitch was not unfamiliar to her. Having been on the house Quidditch team for every second of her second year, those days when she would fly high and smack the bludger would still be fondly remembered from time to time. Quidditch had always been quite a satisfying sport no matter to play or just watch, the strength and swiftness showed in the game tugging at her heart. Broom racing was okay, even though Lindsey didn’t really get the thing of competing against a variety ridiculous obstacles, e.g. pigeons. But all in all flying was fun, the broom was definitely one of the most impressive inventions throughout the wizarding history. Walking alongside the pebble walkway, Lindsey couldn’t help but raise her head to search for any players flying above the pitch. Even if she wasn’t a player anymore, she still loved watching matches. Or training ones, that didn’t really matter much. So…was the Hufflepuff team training today?

She blinked. There wasn’t a whole team high up in the sky, but instead only one. And a familiar one, to be honest. Aaron Jones’ silhouette fell into the warm chocolate brown gaze, bordered by the shiny golden ray of the setting sun. He was on his broom and flying, but definitely not practicing Quidditch nor broom racing - um, maybe those broom racers did have a couple of tricks, but she didn’t really think that they’d ever use a hula hoop while racing - and he looked…great. It was when she realised that Aaron wasn’t on any of those team rosters, but had just been practicing out of his own interest. Oh. She thought. And that was even more impressive. Raising her chin and squeezing her eyes to try to see clearer, Lindsey could now be sure of that Aaron was, indeed, playing some kind of tricks that had barely been put into practice before. New inventions, huh?

She was busy thinking about all this, when the young athlete discovered her. Lindsey watched him descending and saying hello to her, and before she could even realise a hearty grin had emerged on her face. “Hi Aaron.” She’d smile at him, the night breeze blowing her long golden-brown hair. It wasn’t much a surprise when Aaron politely inquired about her intentions showing up here, since she wasn’t a Quidditch player anymore nor was she bringing her own broom. But hey, she could feel the little excitement bursting when he pointed out that she had switched to duelling. She had never talked much to Aaron Jones, their relationship stopping at the category of acquaintances, but he remembered these sort of little details. Precisely. Exactly. Alright, the roster was in the common room, and he might know about her just like she knew he wasn’t on any teams now, but - she was just glad he could remember. “Oh yes. But - I thought I’d come over for a walk. You are doing well these days?” She asked, and got a giggle when he hastily added that he didn’t mean anything special. The grin went even wider when Aaron’s owl hooted and perched right on top of his beanie. Oh yes, she still remembered this owl with quite an exotic name - Napoleon was very interested in her by then.

When she finally had a chance to say something, Lindsey swept some of her hair to her back. First the remaining question. “That’s okay, and it’s indeed true that I fly much lesser than before. Though I definitely still enjoy it a lot!” And then about Aaron’s cute owl. She’d wave at her, chocolate brown eyes trying to meet her keen ones, with a slight chuckle. “Hey Chae - I hope you are also doing well these days?”

…And then her words ran out. But, she did wish to speak with Aaron - he was nice to her so far, with a strange aura of calmness around. And for some reasons she desperately wished to get to know him as a friend rather than a mere acquaintance. Lindsey raised her chin 45 degree to the sky, looked rather meditative, before finally finding something to say. “…Moontrimmer is a very nice broom.” She looked at him right in the eyes, brown meeting brown, and patiently waited for a reply.

"Doing well, yeah," Aaron asnwered. Lied, actually. But it was almost effortless the way it came out. Maybe it was the practice from back when he quit Quidditch - back then none of his friends were convinced he was okay, though. Maybe he'd gotten better at it though. Or maybe this was such a minor turn of phrase - a response he gave so often when asked how he was doing - that the automatic response sounded true. He had realized a lot of people greeted each other with an "All right?" or a "How are you?" just as a way to start a conversation. They didn't really want to know how you were doing. But it didn't mean they wouldn't care if he said something. He had a feeling, actually, that Lindsey would care. She was a fellow Hufflepuff - a passing acquaintance sure, but she had never seemed like a mean person. She would probably care if he told her. But he wouldn't. Not about winter break, at least.

Aaron smiled a little as Lindsey greeted Chae-rin, and he dug in his pocket for one of his owl treats. He offered one to Chae and she hooted in appreciation before taking it, then taking off from his beanie. She knew that training was over, and it was time for her to go join her owl friends at the owlery. They'd probably go out hunting or whatever owls get up to at night. It left him and Lindsey alone, and their eyes locked for a moment. Hers were a rather pretty brown, illuminated by the remaining sunlight. So different than the green eyes he was used to - but not in a bad way. He heard the question about the broom, but couldn't help addressing her earlier question again first.

"Actually, on the whole doing well thing - Aly and I broke up over break, so that's been a bit weird," Aaron added, shrugging off the words. He didn't know why he had said them. Lindsey was actually the first person he told - he didn't know if Aly had told people yet - but it had been a weird few days. And the way Lindsey's eyes had locked onto his - Aaron looked down at the ground, suddenly feeling like he'd made things awkward.

"But yeah, the Moontrimmer," Aaron said, making it clear he wasn't super interested in continuing the conversation he had accidentally started. He put on a crooked smile and raised his gaze again, trying to instill a sense of "everything's fine." "Honestly, I'd like a faster broom, but I've gotta keep saving up for it. I've gotten into performing tricks on my broom and being able to go faster would be helpful... I've actually been wanting to do a big performance for some friends or something, but I haven't really found the right moment and I never feel like I'm ready. Maybe after I get a new broom I'll be good enough."

She swiftly drew her eyes away, when Lindsey suddenly realised that she had stared at Aaron way longer than she should have. His brown eyes were pretty, the Eastern softness embroidered with the golden rays. There was a moment of fidgeting in her, a slight hesitation and awkwardness filling her heart. And so she let her back teeth bit herself on the cheeks, forcing herself to return to the always calm and unswayed normal self. It was close, but she managed it - oh. Why would she feel such an urgent desire to get to know him more, to let the time go still so they could be talking here forever? Granted, Aaron Jones was a trusted individual on her list, but no, it shouldn’t be like this. He…in less than a few minutes had captured her sight, the figure in the air making his way to the very top of the list - she had to get know him. Now.

Chae flew away with an owl treat, disappearing in the sky. As if concealing her peculiar emotions, Lindsey’s gaze followed the beautiful curve which the white owl followed, when she heard Aaron’s voice. She almost immediately had her eyes back on him and looked into his brown eyes yet again - Aly. Broke up. Weird. Her ears captured them, and these words…they did make sense. He and Aly? Aly Salinger, the Ravenclaw who comforted her years ago on the Hogwarts grounds with flowers? And they’ve broken up? Aaron in a relationship? It was when she remembered that she did have heard about such rumours around the school sometime, but yeah, she wasn’t gossip anyway and didn’t care much back then. But why, - why would Aaron tell her about this? He didn’t have to add any supplement to a normal greeting, she knew it, and yet…

Aaron looked down, and so did she. There was a moment of silence between them, awkwardness spreading before she whispered “I’m so sorry.”, her tone soft but genuine. “I hope…I hope you feel better these days.” It shouldn’t have been like this. She did feel bad for Aaron - most people would get hurt by breaking up warn someone - but why, why was she a bit relieved? Lindsey wasn’t very sure. It felt like…something inside her was awakening.

Aaron suddenly switched the topic, and Lindsey knew she didn’t have any rights to know deeper even if she was indeed curious. Her eyes were lightened when he mentioned his tricks and a plan for performances. “Your tricks are just fantastic.” She told him, a grin blooming on her lips. “I saw you out there when I came…and I absolutely love them.” Her smile went even wider, remembering fondly of that silhouette, so young, so vigorous, so attractive. “I - I’ll be your first audience!” It all bursted out at once, the excited and promising words reverberating through the Quidditch pitch. And when she suddenly realised what she had said, Lindsey laughed at herself in her heart. Aaron wouldn’t be lack of audiences. So what was the point of her, stressing that she would be the first one? Oh Merlin, she must have gone tipsy today, under such intoxicating…night breeze.

"No need for apologies, I feel all right," Aaron reassured her. He didn't know why he had brought up Aly in the first place - it's not like he wanted to think about her. Or the fact that she hadn't even come back to Hogwarts after winter break, completely just cutting off contact rather than giving him any chance of closure. All that coupled with the fire and the nightmares? Aaron wasn't doing all right at all, actually. But it definitely wasn't all about Aly. "And I'm getting stronger every day," Aaron said with a confident smile to forget his troubles, jokingly flexing one arm and showing off the muscle that was building. It wasn't much to an adult maybe, but it was certainly a lot for the fifteen-year-old.

Lindsey's eyes seemed to shine when he turned the talk to the brooms and the tricks he was doing. Her compliment was genuine and he felt that, making him forget his troubles as she enthused about it. He had been putting a lot of sweat and effort into his trick riding for over a year now, but he didn't often get an opinion beyond Aly or individual friends (or that one time when that little Ravenclaw girl complimented him). Getting genuinely positive feedback like this was a real mood booster to the Hufflepuff, and he seemed to stand up a bit straighter and puff his chest out a bit more in response.

"Thanks, Lindsey, that means a lot to hear," Aaron said, taking her compliments in stride and smiling almost as big as she was. Then she went on to say she would be his first audience, and his eyebrows raised. "Really? You wouldn't mind?" he asked. "I mean, I've practiced a trick or two in front of friends before, but like to put on a whole show - it would be really nice to have an outside opinion and help me figure out what's working and what's not. If you really would want to, I'd welcome the help and your opinion," he went on to say, a bit of hope sprinkled in his voice. Yes, this would be a perfect distraction. Using all his spare time to practice and organize a show for some friends, having Lindsey as his show advisor so he wouldn't drift into negative thoughts - all of this would be perfect if she was really up for it. Her compliments and offer had seemed genuine after all.

"We could meet during the weekends maybe and I'll show you what I've got in mind? Or even during weekdays if you're not busy studying or doing your duelling," Aaron stopped himself, realizing he still hadn't even gotten a yes yet. He was getting carried away already. "Sorry, I don't want to monopolize all your time," he said, chuckling at himself and taking off his beanie so he could let his hair breathe a little. "I just got really excited at the idea."

Why, she definitely wouldn’t mind. Lindsey blinked, and the figure of a successful broom trick actor almost immediately emerged from the adolescent facing her, who wore fantastic costume - some avant-garde bright coloured suit with spots and strips - and smiled brightly at the hyped audiences in the vast London Quidditch Stadium, with flinging confetti and exhilarated cries. Yet another blink would take her back to the Hogwarts grounds, to the teenage boy whose voice sprinkled with hope and expectations. “Of course, I - I certainly will!” She stammered out, eager to prove her genuine interest in it. “I’m not the most artistic in the world, but, I think I can indeed help with that.” Lindsey chuckled. Helping Aaron out sounded like a great excuse for her to stay close with him, and a way to get to know him better and deeper.

“Sounds great!” She smiled brightly at him while shaking some curls to her back, so that she could look at him with a clearer view. Weekends would be just fine, she would have finished all her schoolwork by then and wasn’t planning to hang out with the girls she knew anyway. As for weekdays…well, Lindsey had to admit that she had her own things to do, like duelling and library session, but Aaron…“No, no, that’s totally okay.” She found herself answering to him even before she had formed a clear plan in mind, plainly letting go of all her concerns and steadfastly following him. “I can get my own stuffs done very quickly.” She added, as if being afraid of him cancelling their “dates” out. “You know, duelling isn’t like Quidditch or Broom Racing, we are basically practicing the spells daily around the school. So yeah, it really doesn’t matter.”

“Actually, I am also!” She chirped, chocolate brown eyes sparkling with joy and expectation. “To work towards a common - I mean, to work towards a goal, is just the most exciting thing in the world.” Her slip of tongue made her blushed a little and she could feel the slight fever on her cheeks, but thankfully the sun was going down and Aaron probably wouldn’t see that shade of red very clearly. She was already placing herself on the same track as Aaron’s unintentionally. Drifting her eyes down and locking it on his taken-off beanie, Lindsey could feel her heart racing. This was gonna be so exciting - just to be around him.

"Oh, that's awesome," Aaron said, a sigh of relief escaping when she reassured him that he wouldn't be monopolizing her time. She explained that duelling took less practice time since they were doing spells all day in class anyway, and in his mind, it made perfect sense. Surely they had intense training sessions, but not as frequently as broom sports. He didn't bat an eye at her explanation.

Aaron's smile grew when Lindsey spoke of also being excited. This was perfect, to have someone that was as inspired as he was. Surely this would launch his work to the next level, and make for a great performance. "I agree, 1000 percent," Aaron said, unable to stop smiling at this point. So many ideas were coming to mind, like the flyers they could put together organizing the event, and the prospect of having dedicated feedback. Maybe they could make a banner - and props! They'd need props for some of the tricks, flashier props than he'd already been working with. The fact that he'd revealed to her about his and Aly's breakup a little while ago was far from his mind at this point, and just excitement was taking over.

"This'll be so great, Lindsey. Seriously, thanks so much. This means a lot," Aaron said, reaching forward and hugging her briefly. A friendly one-armed hug that maybe lasted a bit longer than it should've, simply because he was lost in the flood of ideas. He released her from the hug as he spoke next, "I know you said you came down here for a walk, but if you're up for it, we can fly back to the castle." He was basically offering her a ride back on the Moontrimmer. "Or maybe we can meet together for dinner in a half hour and talk ideas then?"

She couldn’t help but smile, slightly blushing when she noticed that Aaron was clearly enthusiastic about the whole thing. It would be nice - sorry, fantastic - really, if she could always be the first one to be updated on Aaron’s new show. There was something fluttering in her stomach, a completely new feeling, urging her to step forward and give him a bear hug - or at least, to let the time become still and forever. Lindsey took a deep breath to restore her equilibrium, trying hard not to let Aaron discover her real thoughts. “Oh yeah! This…this is gonna be great!!” She stammered out, heart beating fast as Aaron’s smile grew.

Her eyes widened when Aaron zoomed in, and then an arm pulled her into a hug, the warmth of it went all the away from her skin to the depth of her heart. And everything was left behind, all Aaron’s confess about his breakup (she had totally forgotten that he had even mentioned his love life now - she was convinced that he really liked her and that was all on her mind), Chae hovering around with her owl treat, the sun going down and such. A smaller world was formed, only she and Aaron were inside, and Lindsey devouringly inhaled the sweetness of affections in the air -

Even if it was only a mere one-arm hug.

Lindsey was certain that her face burnt when Aaron let go, and she cleared her throat to conceal her embarrassment. Her chocolate brown eyes fixed on the ground, trying hard not to look into his eye again - gosh, he was so…no, she mustn’t think of it. “Yeah, yeah, I did.” She hastily cut in, barely listening to him due to being overwhelmed by awkwardness. “Er, fly?” Absent-minded as she was, her ears caught the word, and Lindsey raised her eyes to confront her fellow badger, inquisitively. Then the words began to make sense. He was offering her a ride, a ride on his broom.

And immediately her eyes were lit. “Oh, of course!” Lindsey chirped eagerly. “I’ve - er, barely ridden with others after I quit Quidditch.” Her Quidditch days were a long time ago, back then she was still a relative newbie to the school and the team. But hey, that was when she first met Aaron - or, when Aaron first made his appearance in her life. He was such a dazzling chaser at that time, she thought, and naturally a few snippets of their training and matches popped up in her head. Some of the memories already blurred after so many things had happened these years, and she admitted that she probably wasn’t paying that much attention to Aaron during her second year - that was a pity, indeed. “No, no, I certainly miss the feeling of flying…along with you.” Hastily she added, as if fearing that Aaron might change his mind.

Thankfully he wasn’t (Lindsey was pretty sure that he was probably very fond of her!). “May I just…?” She gestured to his broom. At the point she felt a little bit uncertain and timid to actually sit behind him in an intimate manner. But if Aaron consented, either with nods, smiles or words, she would go ahead and adjusted herself on his broom, carefully find a place to grab and balance. Feeling the breeze gently touching her hair, Lindsey just sat back, and let herself drown in the sweet, sweet armour of dusk.
I guess they will just be flying towards the castle together then so finished unless Aaron has something extra to say…?
Thank you so much for this lovely thread!
