Early Mornings

Colin munched the sausage. It was really tasty! But he swallowed hard as first Bea, then Luci and then Ying began to question him in rapid succession about being down by the lake earlier this morning! Colin's eyes widened as Ying flashed him her cute troublemaker smile; and he wanted to give Luci a kick under the table. Brothers were supposed to support one another! But the flash of Bea's Prefect badge kept distracting him as she launched into an entire speech about the lake!
"Oh blimey," he whispered to himself.
All three of them were attacking at once! Colin held his hands out as if in supplication. "I---"
"Yes, Mr. McCoire, please enlighten Ms. Fang and Ms. Dupont about your lake crusade," said Luci.
"But---!"
"Why did you have to help Liam find his scarf?"
"I---!"
"And why did he have to help you find your shirt?"
"I can expl---!"
"Were you both running around and tossing things around?"
"But---!"
"Well, Mr. McCoire, first of all, you are well aware that the lake is completely off limits, yes?" Bea lit into him with full prefectural force!
"Er! I mean!"
"Stepping in, no matter how deep, is not something you should do. Especially not in this weather. You could have frozen your limps off and worse," she continued.
"A wee dunk?" Ying asked again, "Very wee one?"
Colin looked desperately from one merciless girl to the other. He found no help from Luci either, who appeared to be rather enjoying the grilling his friend was receiving!
"I trust you are well aware of what happened at the last Fall Ball, aren’t you? That clearly should have taught you why we do not step foot in that Lake unattended,” Bea said, finishing her tirade with the threat of Detention! Colin blinked. The memories of the ball came flooding back.
Slowly, a happy grin spread across Colin's face. He sighed deeply as he draped his arms across the table and rested his head on one side. "Oh, the ball! Yeah, that was by the lake, wasn't it!" He propped his head up on his right hand, still smiling. He smiled at Ying as his eyes came back into focus. "Whoa. Yeah, me and Clair spent the whole night snogging! Deffo a most excellent reason to be in the lake!"
He took a deep breath, rising back up from his reverie. "Say! Bea! Yiiing! If Clair doesn't go to the Spring Ball, we should go! As friends!" Colin's eyes widened as stared straight into Ying's eyes. "You never know what might happen lass!" He flashed her a smile before snagging another sausage from Bea's plate.
She complained about his grubby fingers.
Colin could only shrug and smile unashamedly. "Oi! It's not like I'm all dirty lass! Anyway, you should try some!" he said, waggling the piece of meat about like a flobberworm. "Yummilicious!" he said before popping the sausage into his mouth.

Keep your mind in hell; and don't despair.
