Cyrus grew restless too easily. He had left the Fall Ball early last night, and while he had thought it to be for the best, his actions were already taking a toll on him. He was Cyrus Alexander Darsel. He was silly, and he was fine with that. He was flamboyant, sure, and gosh darn it that was a GOOD thing. But last night he had felt... weird. Wrong. So he had left, retired to sleep, and he hadn't really slept much at all. He had woken up earlier than usual this morning and had made a beeline for Hogwarts's duelling club.

This school year, Cyrus had gotten somewhat more serious. Some called it maturity, but he called it duty. It had all started as some small wish deep inside of him to bring light to his uncle's memory, and that desire had not faded with time. He had hardly dressed for duelling ─ the boy wore corduroy trousers, a white button-up shirt and oxford shoes, plus an olive-green vest to cope with the Scottish weather. His wand was haphazardly tucked into his collar. When he arrived at the duelling club, he absentmindedly pulled it out of his collar and slipped it between his teeth while his gaze scoured the room for a suitable opponent. There were few students in the room, many of whom were quite a bit younger than him. Usually, he wouldn't have minded, but he could have sworn that the majority of these students were first years, which was just unfair. He would have felt bad duelling a first year.

Finally, he settled on a dummy. At least he could get some practice, he told himself, shoving his blond hair off of his forehead before taking his wand out of his mouth. There were no chew marks on it yet despite this not being uncommon for him to do. It might have been unsanitary, but it was something he did without thinking.

Cyrus halfheartedly pointed his wand at a dummy. He couldn't even bring himself to cast his favourite spell, avis. Instead, he waved his wand and murmured, 'Flipendo.' d20: 20 + 10 = 30. Crit success.

The dummy flew backwards. Cyrus was surprised by his unintentional strength, and a small smile pulled at his lips ─ it was nothing like his usual infectious grins, but the success had elicited a small giggle from him nonetheless. Despite the dummy being both resilient and on wheels, it seemed to have a difficult time rebounding from one of the simplest of spells, just a flipendo. Usually, he wouldn't have laughed at even a fake dummy's suffering, but this was... kind of funny. Poor dummy.

Worried it might be a fluke, he waved his wand again. 'Flipendo.' d20: 20 + 10 = 30. What the heck. His smile widened into a brazen grin when the metal dummy flew backwards even more. Had it lifted off of the ground? Whoa. What a flipendo!

Giddy from his success, he glanced around the room once again, wondering if he could duel someone a bit closer to his own age. He doubted that he would find someone who was also seventeen, as older kids seemed to be few and far between, probably all busy studying. He would settle for someone at least willing to deal with him.

His gaze landed on a person who caught his eye mostly because of their hair. It was dyed, something he thought was cool on anyone else but was too scared to try for himself. He would walk up to them, also noting their amazing fashion taste, and he would wave. 'Hi! I'm Cy.' Worried his wand might seem antagonistic, he bent down and slipped it in his shoe the best it would fit. 'I was wondering if you might like to duel me? Your hair is cool, by the way.

There weren't too many people around the halls of Hogwarts this morning, after all most had been busy out celebrating and enjoying their night at the Fall Ball. Whilst it had been a pleasant time, it was not particularly memorable for Chiaki, as she had been otherwise preoccupied with various matters during the event and unfortunately there was seemingly little that she could actually remember of the night. She assumed it had been fun, however.

This following morning, whilst many were bleary-eyed and staggering around the castle like a zombie, Chiaki was not one of them. In one hand, she clutched a small tome of spells that she wanted to practice whilst she presumed the duelling club room at Hogwarts would be less busy. It would be a good time to review the spells she had learnt in school to make sure she was on top of things. Whilst she didn't truly care about her grades to the same extent as some of her peers, she didn't want to fail.

She took a seat where she guessed spectators sat when watching the games, finishing off her toast as she quietly observed the others in the room. There were quite a lot of younger students, even younger than her, working together and practising spells, which made her smile. However, her eyes settled in probably the oldest student in the room, who seemed very experienced in the ways of duelling. It was very impressive to her, especially when he managed to cast the flipendo spell with such ease. She wished that she could have his seemingly natural spellcasting ability, but alas, she would have to work hard to become that good.

As he seemed to finish up, she allowed her eyes to wander around the rest of the room again, not wanting to come across as rude for staring. Her thoughts were disrupted, however, by that older student, who now had approached her, and her cheeks reddened as she prepared to explain herself. But that wasn't what happened, as he introduced himself rather politely.

Taken aback, Chiaki returned the greeting with a smile. "It's nice to meet you, Cy. I'm Chiaki."

The offer to duel him took her by surprise, and was daunting to say the least, but she figured that there was no better practice than to duel someone better than herself. So that's why she found herself replying, "Um, alright. And thank you, I dyed it myself. But I must warn you and say that I will likely not be anywhere near as talented as you are in duelling. I was watching and your flipendo spell was very incredibly good. But I accept the challenge."

Standing up and brushing the crumbs from her outfit, she waited for him to see what he would have to say.

Cyrus smiled at Chiaki when she introduced herself. She seemed interesting, and the fact that she had dyed her hair on her own was impressive! However, his intial brazen grin died down a bit when she expressed doubt that her abilities would measure up to his. The Ilvermorny boy tilted his head to the side. 'I'm sure you'll do great,' he said in earnest. '...But thank you. And it's super cool that you dyed your hair yourself!'

He glanced around the Duelling Club before bending down and picking his wand out from its snug spot in his shoe. He tapped it against his leg nonchalantly. 'Well, if you want, we can start whenever. But are there any spells you'd rather I not cast?' He understood that some people had spells they disliked. He personally didn't like casting incendio on human beings, and while he had never had the body-bind curse used on him, he didn't think he would find it very pleasant if it were to happen.

Whenever Chiaki said they could start, he would back away to a decent distance, and he would aim his wand as well as he could. He would think happy thoughts and close his eyes before waving his wand and doing a bit of fancy footwork while casting the spell: 'Avis!'

It was his favourite spell. Anyone who knew the duck-obsessed boy decently enough, or who had seen his clothing a few times, would have understood, and they would not have been surprised.

He just hoped that the spell would start the duel in a way that all duels should be started: in good fun and a bit of colourful drama!

It may not have been clear, but surprisingly Chiaki did understand the challenge she had just accepted. It was going to be very tough to beat this guy, but she was definitely going to try her best.

"Thank you for the vote of confidence," she smiled in response. "I have no issue with the spells you want to cast either, though I appreciate you asking beforehand."

She knew that, as an older student, Cy would have been much more practiced at casting spells that Chiaki herself might've found nearly impossible to cast right now. But there was no backing down now.

Carefully, she made her way down to a clear spot and held out her wand in preparation, eyes focused on her opponent. "I'm ready to begin when you are."

As Cy took their place opposite her, in their head, she quickly ran through as many spells as she could think of that were filed away somewhere in her head, that had been waiting for a time like this. There were so many options for how she could start off this duel - she could go on the offensive straight away, keep her guard up in defence, or even try to slow him down. When she made her choice, she locked eyes with Cy, before chanting "Verdimillious!"

The duel had officially began, and Chiaki couldn't wait to see how she'd fare.

Chiaki was incredibly nice – something that Cyrus found refreshing. His experience with kids from other schools was not always the most pleasant; but then again, kids at Ilvermorny weren't all that nice, either.

He nodded when she said she had no issue with him casting any spells. He still wasn't inclined to use Confringo because that was just rude, but it was nice to know he wouldn't have to think about which spells he used too much.

He kept his gaze on Chiaki after she said she was ready to begin, and then he raised his wand.

Ducks would fill the air. Cyrus bounced on his toes giddily, a grin on his face. They were mostly mallards, which weren't his favourites, but they still began the duel with a bit of wholesome fun!

The ducks did obscure him from Chiaki's spell, Verdimillious. He had a healthy appreciation for that spell, although he'd never used it in a duel. He did his best to dodge the spell – which had been executed wonderfully – and found himself largely unbothered by it.

Every comment he made was genuine – Cyrus was the type of person who could not fathom lying.

He would raise his wand again, this time taking advantage of his evasion to think, and he waved his wand quickly, giving his movement a small flourish once he was done. 'Ventus!' he exclaimed.

The first spell her opponent cast wasn't one quickly recognisable to Chiaki as a flurry of ducks swarmed around them both, obscuring him from her view and allowing him to evade the spell she had sent towards him, or so she presumed (the ducks had made it a bit more difficult for to actually see Cyrus). Whilst that did disappoint her, she knew that duelling someone older than her was bound to be a challenge, and it just meant that she would have to rise to the occasion.

Cyrus had been kind enough to still offer a nice remark (or so she chose to believe it was) despite her failure to hit him with her spell, and she found herself a little more cheered up from it. "I appreciate that," she called back to him, only seeing it fair to return a compliment. "And I like your duck spell! That was a very clever idea!"

Despite the circumstances, she was coming to like the older student, and especially his sense of humour. Hoping to continue the fun of the duel, she raised her wand once again, trying to aim it accurately through the wall of ducks as she cast her next spell. "Let us see if you are able to dodge this though! Tarantallegra!"

Of course, there was every chance her spell would miss, but having this aura of confidence was fun.

The way Cyrus's eyes lit up when Chiaki complimented his Avis was akin to the lighting up of a Christmas tree in the eyes of a toddler. Bouncing slightly on his toes in joy, he responded, 'Thank you so much!! I really like that spell.'

He was very proud of the younger student's confidence. Despite his age, she was not deterred; instead, she fired off another spell at him – and it hit! Laughter began to overtake the American boy as his feet moved of their own accord. For now, he was dancing a jig, leaping up and down and side to side uncontrollably. 'Wow!' he said between gulps of laughter. 'That's solid!'

Chiaki grinned as he replied - the spell Cyrus seemed to love so much seemed fitting to his personality, and it would make sense for it to be his favourite. She wasn't really sure what spells she preferred, and she had never been much a powerful spellcaster herself, but, to use duelling terms, she was more of a fan of support spells rather than offensive attacking spells. She found they also had more fun effects, at least she thought so.

It turns out that Chiaki's confidence was not misplaced as the spell managed to hit Cyrus, causing him to begin dancing uncontrollably. She joined him in his laughter momentarily, enjoying the moment, until a blast of wind would catch her left side and knock her slightly off balance, disorienting her somewhat.

"Thank you! And your spell was not bad either!" she called out to him. As she scrolled through her (whilst limited) mental catalogue of spells, she resigned that she would probably have to begin to use more offensive spells if she was actually going to have a chance of winning this duel. Cyrus would likely have to do the same, but he had a lot larger catalogue of spells to choose from. Settling for a classic, they called out "Rictusempra!"

Things started off slowly for Cyrus. Aside from that ventus, his spells were more showy than damage-causing – and that was okay, to him. That was the fun of it all, really, getting to show off his skills. He didn't need to cause hurt even though that was the name of the game. It was more important to him that Chiaki was having fun.

His meteolojinx created a mean-looking storm above Chiaki, complete with a boom of thunder a la the organ in the titular song in The Phantom of the Opera to accentuate its dramatic entrance.

Chiaki was not to be outdone. She cast a marvellous Rictusempra, and before he knew it, Cyrus was doubled over and giggling, his hair falling into his face as he moved from side to side, doing anything and everything to attempt to assuage the offensive tickles.

He could hardly think, let alone speak, but he did his best to wave his wand as he wheezed out, 'Nec Divinos Crepitus!'

It was time, then, to spice things up.
