101 ways to wipe the floor with Colin
Unoffical duel between @Colin McCoire and @Koko Riddle

Well. This was not what Cass had been expecting to do when they walked up to collect letters from the owlery today. Their fathers suggestion about trying out for dueling captain had been a valid one, and so had the suggestion to referee a practice duel. With a bit of asking around they had found some upper years but... They had a sneaking suspicion that this wasn't exactly going to be a fair match. Oh well, at least it would be an interesting one. This was also going to be new to them, having never actually seen a duel before. Grinning, they yelled out "Are you both ready?".
Eagerness would have to make up for inexperience here, and they fully planned to commentate it like an official duel. Just for the fun of it. Besides, it added to the atmosphere. If they were commentating right now they would probably say something about the questionable match up. They may only be one year apart, but Cass was 90% sure Koko was going to wipe the floor with colin. This would certainly be entertaining.
A small crowd had gathered around to watch as the duelists took their places, and Cass picked a spot off to the side where they had a good view. No cheating would be happening under their watch thank you very much. Normally cheating would only make things more exciting, but half of the reason they were doing this was to show that they were capable of refereeing a duel. They doubted it would make a good impression if they just the rules go ignored. Speaking of impressions, it was time to get this duel started. "Wands at the ready" with a loud voice to make sure that they were heard but not enough that they were screaming, they made a downwards movement with their wand. "Begin!" they smiled. Something about the adrenaline that came with a challenge never got old.

101 ways to wipe the floor with Colin

Full Moon was just done, but Colin was still feeling it. He actually hadn't felt this good, this --- alive --- since the ball. The dark dreams had left him, and he was pretty sure he had some idea what they meant. He'd have to find AngelFyre before end of term. But there was no time for that now! Colin's bare feet had pounded up al six million four hundred thirty-three thousand eight hundred and twelve steps that led from his dungeon home in House Slytherin and up to the duelling hall.
His heart was pounding. Some first year Snake had roped him into signing up for an impromptu duel with an older student. Prass or Cass or Lass --- Colin's unusually sensitive ears couldn't quite catch the kid's name, so fast and excited was the invitation. There was something about trying out for duelling captain or something. Colin wasn't sure how duelling worked, but he was pretty sure you needed to know more than lumos to duel.
He had to admire the younger kid's spunk.
It was much like his own, when he wasn't feeling so dark.
At last he strode into the duelling hall, ready to take on ---
"Oh crap! Koko!?"
Colin moaned. "I'm so dead," he whispered to himself. He shook out his mane of messy white hair and gave Koko his most confident smirk. Louder, he said: "Ye're going down Riddle!"

· · ─────── · 𖢨 · ─────── · ·Koko had been itching for a fight for months now.
That sounded terrible. It felt terrible. Koko was a pacifist (unless it was Quidditch). She would never hurt anyone (unless it was Quidditch). But it just wasn't cutting it anymore. She would tell herself she was fine, really, but from the incident in the dungeons to what felt like every Quidditch game ever recently, she hadn't been in control of herself. She'd cried this year. Twice. It had been awful.
So when she'd been asked about a practice duel to help a younger year learn how to referee it, she decided, why not? It wasn't as if she was any good at duelling, but that was the fun of it: she had no high expectations to hold herself to. If she was awful, then that was that. It was all for fun.
(Plus, there was something about martial magic that did have to be admired. The ability to direct a spell at another person with the discipline to make it hit and not kill them was impressive.)
Koko had taken things a bit more slowly today after her morning jog. She hadn't relaxed, but she had been stuck in her thoughts. She hadn't even realised that now she was in the duelling club, a place she never quite frequented but still found herself popping into from time to time. She had properly duelled twice, and neither of those experiences were great. But there was always room for improvement. At least now she wasn't sickened by martial magic.
She held her aspen wand (unfaithful little thing it was, it was hers) in her left hand, almost in a vice grip, and she carefully stalked towards the piste. Her usual resting smile was not on her lips; instead, her eyes were narrowed, her brow was furrowed and her lips rested in an even line. She had to get herself together.
She gazed warily around the room to notice Cass Ito, a student she had given detention to once – a fact she would not be bringing up. She waved demurely at both Cass and...
'Colin!?'
Koko's amber eyes widened slightly, and her grip on her wand loosened before her resolve strengthened (and so did her grip). In return to Colin's words, all she would offer was a cold smile that was very unlike her usual resting expression.
This was like Quidditch, she decided. It was a competition, and the only way out was to win.· · ─────── · 𖢨 · ─────── · ·

Standing there watching the flashing spells and fancy wandwork of the duel, they could finally understand why their father loved it so much. The complex casting left them slightly in awe of what these older students could accomplish, and perhaps what they too might one day be able to do. Initially Colin had looked surprised to see that he would be dueling someone double his year, but it seemed that like all good slytherins he was able to rise to the challenge. And rise he did. Cass didn't recognise the spell that he cast, but it hit Koko and rendered her unable to speak.
Koko however, had fired off a spell of her own before being silenced. It too had hit its target, cause Colin to break into a sneezing fit. That's right, they had planning on commentating this. Fumbling with their wand well still trying to watch the duel, they ended up poking themself in the nostril. Ouch. Fine, it seemed fate didn't want their beautiful commentary. Probably a good thing seeing as they didn't know what either of the spells were.
Probably time to read up on dueling spells actually. Ugh, not more reading. They already had to do more than should be legal for classwork, though with all the things they got up to in class probably only a third of it had entered their brain. Still, it had to be done.

101 ways to wipe the floor with Colin

"Tchoo!"
Colin began sneezing.
"Drat," he whispered. Sneezing hex. Could have been worse!
"Tchoo!"
Colin's body shuddered with the force of the sneezes. He sniffed, narrowing his eyes at Koko. This was no way to face a pretty girl, with snot all running down his lip and sneezing! But there was nothing for it. He sniffled again. Maybe he'd try the same spell on her! This was duelling after all, and not all the spells had to be flashy. Sometimes, as Colin well knew, even the simplest spells could be very effective in combat.
He shook his head like a dog. It was amazing how that could clear his mind and help him focus. He’d need all his focus. Koko was sixth year, well almost seventh! She could probably turn him into a newt! He’d have to be quick with both his wand work and his evasion if he were to survive just the next round!
"Tchoo!"
Drat. Colin knew he had to focus extra hard. He wiggled his toes a bit as he made his stance for the next round. His wand was ready for the umpire's signal. He suddenly remembered the name. Cass. Cass Ito. He smiled at Koko. Lovely amber eyes or no, he would only stare. And as soon as the signal was given ... he would pounce!

· · ─────── · 𖢨 · ─────── · ·Throughout years of Quidditch, Koko had learned never to underestimate younger students. Oftentimes, they were extremely capable, and oftentimes, battling against their older peers often had immense drive, making them more dangerous.
Suffice to say, she didn't underestimate Colin. She didn't want to take him down immediately, though; that was just rude. So she tried the Sneezing Hex.
What she hadn't expected from him, though, was for him to cast Mimblewimble. She felt the spell's effect wash over her, her tongue going limp and her throat closing up, and her jaw dropped slightly before she forced her expression into almost-neutral, if not slightly-annoyed, determination.
Her amber eyes narrowed, and she glanced down at her wand before huffing a quiet breath. Useless thing. She couldn't even try to use it now that she had been silenced.
The older Slytherin grit her teeth and kept her eyes on Colin, her wand still at the ready despite its apparent uselessness. She bounced on her toes, ready to move at the sight of anything, anything at all. She opened her mouth in some poor imitation of a duellist's reflexes before she quickly shut it in favour of glaring at Colin.
She was friendly when it wasn't a competition. But when the cost of kindness was winning, what was the point of such a thing at all?
At least Colin was sneezing and coughing. He really didn't look all too great. Maybe she should have chosen Rictusempra instead. Oh well, always an idea for later.
Koko didn't think he would be able to one-shot her – her daily jogs had increased her endurance quite a lot compared to her first year. Nevertheless, her usual vigilance would return, and her gaze would dart around the piste before focusing in on Colin again, her body ready to prepare for any potential threat.· · ─────── · 𖢨 · ─────── · ·

Colin's busy sneezing didn't stop him from sending off a spell in Kokos direction. Cass hadn't heard the name before, but they recognised the incendio. How could they forget the lovely fire making spell? This must be a more advanced version though, since they doubted he had added the duo on the end just for fun. The target in question looked very annoyed at her new lack of speaking ability, and stood ready to dodge any attempts that he might make. And dodge she did. She slipped out of the way of his spell with ease, and it looked like Colin's spell had worn off.
Time for him to start doing some dodging of his own it seemed. While still under the effects of the sneezing spell from the round before. If he wasn't in a bit of trouble at the start of the duel, it seemed like he was now. Duels could change within seconds though, and perhaps he would manage to pull something out of the bag. Only time would tell, and they were certainly excited to see what happened. You could say that they were on the edge of their seat, except they deliberately had stood because of their teeny tiny height disadvantage.
Dam being short. It ruined everything. The only thing it was useful for was quicker kicks to peoples shins, and they always got told off for that. Even at Hogwarts, some things didn't change. They saved that train of thought for another time, and turned their focus back to the ongoing duel. Now this was fun. Sometimes they regretted not choosing to be a duelist, but sadly you could only be on one team and broom racing had their heart.

· · ─────── · 𖢨 · ─────── · ·It was a good thing that someone had come up with the concept of 'death glaring' since Koko didn't want to be the first person to do such a thing. The look she was giving Colin probably qualified as a death glare, and she'd crossed her arms over her chest to boot! Although, given that Colin was quite a few inches taller than her, she probably didn't look all that threatening. That was okay. It was the thought that counted.
In the midst of her huffing and puffing and most definitely not being able to cast any spells, she hadn't taken her eyes off of Colin. It helped that the referee was quiet. She didn't think she would have been able to focus if they were any louder.
Colin shot an Incendio Duo at her, and her scowl faded in favour of her expression shifting into an expression of horror. Her feet moved quicker than she'd ever purposefully moved them before, and the flames whooshed past her. She was left speechless not by the Mimblewimble but by shock.
She glanced over at the referee to really get a look at them this time. Cass, right? The kid she'd given a detention to all because of an egg in her French toast? Well... in her defence, it had been really gross, and it had been a long week. But wasn't it always a long week with her?
Cass seemed to be shorter than her, which was at least a plus in her eyes. It was rare to see first years that were that much shorter than her, which was... kind of disappointing, sometimes, but as Koko spent most of her time outside of schooling in the air, she didn't really notice height differences too much. They were all the same height on a broom anyway.
Later, she would have to thank Cass for allowing this... and she would really, really have to hope that the younger kid didn't quite remember her from before. Or at least wasn't mad. Merlin, she hoped they weren't mad at her.
She opened her mouth and mumbled, 'Testing, testing, one, two, three,' to ensure her tongue and jaws still functioned properly. After affirming that, she swallowed firmly and stared ahead.
'Nice spell, McCoire.'
She could begrudgingly allow him that.· · ─────── · 𖢨 · ─────── · ·

101 ways to wipe the floor with Colin

A smirk played about Colin's lips. Koko was giving him The Stare. He knew The Stare well. He'd tried it on others, but it never worked well for him. He'd always reckoned he was too cute for it to work, and deep down, he knew that he just didn't have it in his heart to follow through with ruthlessness. Koko stood with her arms crossed over her chest. She reminded him of his little sister, Ciarán, when he'd done something stupid and now she was lecturing him on why it wasn't a good idea to try and fly two brooms at the same time.
Girls had their own kind of magic, though, Colin reckoned, and part Veelas in particular. He was only just beginning to realise how vulnerable he was to it. For him, it was the eyes. And Koko was staring right him. There was no way to avoid her gaze. Amber wasn't his colour --- Colin was all for blue eyes! --- but deep down there was something about Koko's eyes that drew him in. He ---
Colin shook his head like a dog. "Tchoo!" He sniffed again. Dratted snot. But it was amazing how a good shake could reset a lad's whole perspective!
FIRE!!
Colin loved fiery magic! And fire spells were sooooo cool in duelling! And! Incendio Duo was his current favourite. Ever since Regina had coached him on its uses. He smirked as the flames gushed from his wand towards Koko. The momentary look of horror in the older girl's eyes was satisfying indeed, even though her feet decided to shift the rest of her out of harm's way. In all honesty, Colin was just happy he didn't actually set himself on fire.
It was always a possibility, of course. Spells backfired. Sometimes they just went all wonky. But Colin had actually been practicing and the last couple races had proven to him that he was, in fact, getting better at controlling his magic. He just wasn't very good at choosing duelling partners sometimes. He still needed to destroy that prat Finnegan Connor --- the nerve of that little git to try and hit Colin when he was down! --- but it seemed very frequently he ended up duelling with older kids. Dan had destroyed him last year, and now it looked like Koko would put an end to him this year.
"Nice spell, McCoire."
Colin revelled in the compliment. He flashed Koko his best smile, showing off all his fangs! He bowed quickly in thanks and took his stance for the next round.

The spellwork from both of the older years was really something to watch. Their wide eyes took in Colin's very wide and pointy smile (Were those fangs? Did they get in the way when he ate?) and his clear appreciation of the compliment. His spell was clearly deserving of it too, though Cass hadn't exactly seen it cast often enough to be a good judge. The next spell that emerged from his wand also met the qualifications of impressive, fancy and one that Cass had only heard of in their Pa's late night bedtime stories. Obscuro! The blindfolding spell. Apparently very useful in your hands, and very annoying to be cast on you. Koko wasn't having any problems there though, as she managed to scramble out of the way of it.
They hated to think of being blindfolded in the middle of a duel. How would you protect yourself from the other teams spells? Although they guessed that was the point. Still, it must be terrifying. Koko struck back with yet another spell of legend- and this time it actually hit its target! That alone made it seem more impressive to Cass, though they supposed Colin got bonus points for being the underdog. The wind jinx she cast knocked Colin back a few feet, and was the first hit that looked actually damaging of the duel. Things were really "heating up" right now. Though they supposed it was a bit late for that joke, as all the fiery spells had been cast last round.
