"It's ok." -was the reflex response he gave Alan, although what his friend had actually apologised for, he didn't know for sure.
"You don't like History of Magic?" Scott asked, surprised. "I'd imagine you did. Or I mean... I do! At least, I just recently got a hang of it. All of first year I couldn't figure out just what they wanted me to write. I just thought, It's history: it's all there already!" He gestured randomly with his hands, illustrating a clueless eleven-year-old. "Although I envy you Slytherins with your Potions in the morning. We," He pointed between Alan and himself. "have it as our last lesson on Fridays. There's just no way of concentrating at that time! Not that I wouldn't like to, Potions is one of my favourite subjects. Nagal scares me, though, a bit..."
Scott laughed and shook his head, as it wasn't anything serious. Nagal had given him his first A on an otherwise clean O's report card. Maybe that was it. Scott wasn't one to care too much about his marks, per say, but any kind of evaluation brought out the conscientious first-year in him.
"But he's brilliant, all the same! I-"
He interrupted himself mid-sentence. There was one person around the table that didn't seem too happy. Sometimes, Scott had learned, it was as if the slightest dejection in a room would pull at his attention without him even knowing.
"I mean, I..."
He was looking at Marissa, who was sitting down at the table as if in hiding, barely having uttered a word since taking her seat. Even Alan had spoken more than the Hufflepuff, so clearly something wasn't quite right.
"You're awfully quiet! That's alright. You know, my mother has told me that sometimes I talk so much that others feel as if they can't chime in. In fact she's told me that a number of times... Dad has too. And Ben, but he does the same thing so it doesn't count.
What do you Hufflepuffs have in the morning? Do you share any class with us? I can't remember... Ravenclaw, though, we do share something today! Don't we, Emma? Transfiguration. I like transfiguration... Oh!"
The sight of the grapefruits was the only thing that could shut him up for now.

The Breakfast Club
The Hufflepuff student continued to drink her milk and munch on some toast from time to time as she listened into their conversation. Mostly daydreaming, but still... listening in. She liked the food that the school provided, magic and all. It reminded her of an all you can eat buffet at holidays that families would go to. Lessons were not for a while yet they continued to talk about that for a while, Marissa slightly dreaded them, she had not finished all of the homework that she needed to do. She was not exactly the smartest and rarely ever got Os, the only thing she was passionate about was Magical Creatures. Hopefully she would be able to choose that for her Third Year along with the normal lessons.
Scott loved to talk, clearly. She looked at him properly for the first time, taking in the details. He was extremely taller than Marissa, even for someone their own age. He could easily tower over her, he must be part Giant or something. Extremely blonde hair, just like her. But opposites is many other ways. It was clear on how much Scott talked, he was an extrovert and possibly liked the sound of his own voice. Funny accent, must be Irish or something. Suddenly she was snapped out of her mental notes.
The Gryffindor boy was looking at her and now rambling on about how she was extremely quiet and something about what his mother had said about him. He quickly moved onto about the timetables, not really letting poor Marissa keep up with what he was saying. She simply stared blankly at him as it seemed as if he got distracted by some grapefuits. Mari hoped everyone else thought he was crazy, not only her.

Alan shrugged when he was asked whether he liked History of Magic or rather why he did not like it. ”It is too many facts and theory... The only lesson I really liked last year was the one where they taught the Cleaning Spell...”, he mumbled, stumbling over a few words and keeping his voice rather quiet. This is how he was, he was not used to talking to more people at once and he usually hid from very social events, except when curiosity got the better of him. He was indeed a rather curious person and other stuff got him to talk a lot, such as creatures or funny things.
Scott's words made sense and he did not know the other Gryffindor had any problems with that subject. ”Well... I mean I know what to write... I need acceptable grades, but it is just not as interesting as spells...”, he explained his thoughts to the small group of people, before he calmed down a bit.
His gaze wandered to the Hufflepuff his friend addressed. She was indeed quiet, the most quiet in their group which made her even more quiet than him. Maybe she did not like talking, he knew people like that who would not talk at all and it made it pretty difficult to hang out with them. Alan was awkward with talking and when the other person also would not talk at all, all he could do was sit by them and be silent to each other.
”Have you guys chosen any electives yet?”, he asked curiously, just to not be quiet. Scott was the only one talking so he might feel uncomfortable with that. Having done his part of talking for now, he began to eat some of his mashed potatoes.

The Breakfast Club
Tapping her chin, Alexx thought about the question. She hadn't actually considered what elective she wanted to take, which was surprising for a girl who was so on top of things. She wanted to take a class that her friends would take, but she also knew that she was interested in things that others might find boring or useless, such as runes and divination. Then again, some of those professors really spooked her! Professor Lydursdattir was... intimidating. She hadn't even met her, just glanced at her in the halls. Still, she was free to stereotype people if she wished.
Crossing her legs beneath her seat and tilting her head to the side, she finally spoke up. "Well, I'm really looking at Ancient Runes and Divination. Both seem fascinating to me." She announced, popping a berry into her mouth. "Please tell me someone is going to be taking those classes with me..." She followed up, sighing a bit. She really, really hated the thought of being alone. She couldn't ask Ami, because she knew her better than that; those subjects would bore her to death. Bloom, on the other hand, might be interested. There had to be at least one of her friends who was interested in taking the electives deemed to be "harder". And it wasn't Alexx's fault that she was no good with creatures, either! She repelled them! Plus, taking Muggle Studies would be unfair, as she was raised in the muggle world. Though, she did do that Model UN thing, and she rather liked muggle government... Perhaps there was a way that she could take three? She was sure Professor Lear was insane enough to let her do it.
As she turned back to Scott, she smiled sweetly. "Nagal is harmless, trust me. Just a dungeon lurker, but he's fine." She giggled, listening to him try to defend his point. Scott spoke a mile a minute! This kid was full of energy! It was no wonder he and Ami got on well, they were practically the same entity. She was already having blurred vision and seeing the Hufflepuff in his place.
Alexx disagreed with Alan. Tenfold. She couldn't express exactly how much she even disagreed with him, she just did. The writing was fun! Bookwork was easy. It was doing all the spells and the potions that was the hard part, because they took practice and percision. She didn't need to do anything to write stuff down, take notes, read a book, so on and so forth. That was all the easy stuff. To each their own, however. That is what Mikey would tell her. Besides, Mikey always said that boys needed something to occupy them. They just weren't capable of multitasking the way girls were. What was it he said they had? Waffle brains? She couldn't quite recall. It was something about boxes, and it made perfect sense when he explained it.
Just then, Rosalie poked out of her pocket, making a squeaking noise. She tapped her head slightly, reassuring her that she was giving her attention. Alexx had gotten into the habbit of taking her everywhere she went because geez- the thing was needy! She wasn't really a nuisance per se, but she definitely had many requirements that Alexx didn't realize she was signing up for when she bought her. She wouldn't complain, though. Rosalie was a cute pet.
Leaning her head back to face Emma, she smiled. "We share some classes together today, don't we?" She asked, as if she wasn't familiar with her schedule. Of course she was. Alexx was probably the most punctual girl in this whole school. Or... She could be if she wanted to be. It took her a long time to really get her shit together, but she managed. Now, it felt like she was on top of the world. Every single morning, she arose ready to conquer life. It was new to her. And probably to anyone else who remembered the blubbering first year that she was, the one with the guts to fight Aurelia. A wild child she used to be, but her brothers knocked some sense into her when she informed them of her actions. Fighting was against the rules. They were just happy that she hadn't gotten caught. Admittedly, she was also a bit grateful, because a howler was the last thing first year Alexx needed.
Popping a couple more berries into her mouth, she smiled at everyone. Marissa seemed to be an aura of teenage (pre-teenage? tweenage?) angst over there, but seeing as though Alexx was a rather amoral girl, she elected to ignore it. She was likely having uncalled for flashbacks to the funeral, and the blonde Slytherin had no idea how to even begin with consulting her. So, she left it be. Someone more cheerful and sympathetic, perhaps Scott or Alan, would do the job nicely. Alexx was here to repremand students, not comfort them.

The Breakfast Club
The Hufflepuff girl still wasn't talking, but Scott shrugged his shoulders as he supposed some people were more tired in the morning than others were. But both Alan and Alexx were conversing, and it gladdened him very much, as he even patted his friend's back when he mentioned how spells were more fun to learn, because that he agreed with. Then he turned to the Prefect as she'd started answering his question about their electives, something Scott hadn't really thought too hard about until now... Alexx was apparently more interested in the theoretic subjects than Alan was.
Scott liked those, too, but then again: he liked all of them bar their reading aspects.
"Oh, if on anyone, then you can count on me! I've liked Ancient Runes so far, and Divination seems really impressive... I don't think I'd be able to see anything, though. Far too distracted. I am thinking of Muggle Studies! My dad is sort of nagging me about it, which he rarely ever does... he took it, but now neither Ben nor Silas did. I've already let him down by not choosing Care of Magical Creatures, so I can't hurt him any more!"
Scott laughed and shook his head. He actually wouldn't mind at all practicing Muggle Studies, because he'd realised lately how he knew much less of that culture than your average half-blood would. Much less than both of his brothers, and of course much less than his dad. He was a non-fiction writer, Jacob, and so it was his job to know a little about everything. Let it be the origins of a magical practice or how to distinguish different types of magical fungi.
Scott did not want to study fungi.
"Mother wants me to choose Arithmancy, so maybe I will see you in Divination, after all. Her father was big on Arithmancy, I think."
Scott had begun to cut a grapefruit, and when it parted, he offered one of the halves to Alan, then to the girls (not the order his mother would've suggested but she wasn't there to correct him). Then, once they knew it was up for grabs, he laid it down on his plate and began sugaring the one he intened for himself like crazy, and turned to Alan again.
"You should definitely choose Care of Magical Creatures. I know cats aren't magical, but I can see you working with animals! Me, not so much... Though I like them! Do you, Emma? Marissa? Alexx?"
Scott took a teaspoon from a copper saucer, and began to dig the pink mesocarp for pulp. He didn't understand how the girl opposite to him could possibly get full by just eating berries, or the Hufflepuff with only toast... Didn't matter.
Scott liked those, too, but then again: he liked all of them bar their reading aspects.

Emma began to imagine all of the electives she could take next year and which ones would benefit her the most in the years ahead of her. Only a month remained in the school year and she hadn't even picked out her electives for next year. It was a scary thought she wanted to put off until the time came, but supposedly now was the time. She didn't have her entire life planned out ahead of her, just the next month until the time came to leave Hogwarts and return one year older. What was there really to plan? All she had to do was choose her electives, organizations, and keep up with her studying that would increase next year. There frankly weren't that many alternatives to choose from and she surely wasn't going to take Muggle Studies seeing that she was a half-blood. Sure, it would have been an effortless class to take and the more she thought about it, the more she wanted to take it, that is if staff would allow her to take it. After all, it was a guaranteed rate of a perfect grade even if it was cheating slightly.
Nodding her head, she began to reflect back to her first year at Hogwarts. Did she have Scott last year in Transfiguration? She couldn't remember, but she didn't try hard to decipher the thought.
Candidly, she was divided between the idea of writing and spell casting. It all depended on the subject. There were the subjects she favored like History of Magic and sometimes even Transfiguration, though they could be a bit boring from time to time. Then there were the subjects she dreaded like Herbology and Astronomy, even though she wasn't bad at the latter. It was rather easy to sit around and copy things from a book, but she was a hands-on learner for the most part and it got tedious after a while. As hard as it was, casting spells was much more entertaining than learning about it in a gigantic textbook. Even failing could be funny, or destructive.
At the mention of Ancient Runes, the brunette smiled. She didn't see how it was going to help her, but learning a new language wasn't something she was going to turn down. No one spoke in runes, was that even possible? Nevertheless, it was still fascinating and it was unmistakably going to be one of her classes for next year. Like in Transfiguration, a favorite of hers, the first day of class was a blast for her even if she couldn't remember the entire alphabet after class had passed. "I dunno, Divination is a thought. You can just lie your way through the class though and receive full marks. I'll definitely be seeing you two in Runes, though. What are you two going to choose? Are you actually going to take Arithmancy? We should all share classes!" In a hopeful tone came these questions that she'd have a few friends to goof off with, whether that was in or out of classes. She was getting tired of being the only face she felt comfortable with during her Charms class.
Fingering the table absentmindedly, taking a slice of the grapefruit with her other hand and plopped it into her mouth. Nodding at Alexx's question, she laughed. "Thank goodness for that. I'd die in History without you..."
"Do you think they'll actually be a cat on grounds? Ooh, what about a puppy?" Came another blurt of questions that she couldn't stop herself from asking. There were several things to look forward to in the class and other things she wasn't quite looking for... like getting her hands dirty. She much preferred Unicorns and Nifflers to Thestrals and Flobberworms, though all animals had some kind of dirt on them. She just liked to think healing Unicorns were better than undead horses. Still, it was a small price to pay for having a chance of spending more time with them. There was still no guarantee of the five being put in the same class period, but she could only hope for the best and keep her pessimistic thoughts away for the time being. Beaming widely, she reached over and took one of Alexx's berries and dropped it into her mouth immaturely. "Oh, let's just say I like some animals."

Alan was slowly warming up to the small group, slowly but surely and he was glad they all seemed so welcoming. Or those he did not know were. Alan smiled, hearing the encouraging words from Scott made him happy. He would definitely try to work with animals and creatures in the future. Maybe as a vet and rehabilitation person for them, was this what it was called? Probably not, but Alan was not familiar with the big words for that. Maybe he should just keep shortening it with magizoologist since everyone would understand that term.
”Well I plan on taking Ancient Runes, because remember when they said in History that it is necessary to understand the runes if you want to do wandless and wordless magic? Or ward areas?”, Alan explained as if he had a clue, yet it was the only thing he remembered from the whole lesson. It had been the only information that picked his interest as well, so who could blame him. He had spend the rest doing his homework so he would not have to do them in his free time.
”And I don't think I will choose divination even though the professor looks really cool... But I think the third one I will choose is Muggle Studies-”, he began to ramble, wondering if anyone else had interest in that. ”Like my cousins use a lot of Muggle things and one of them showed me a box with moving images... so they were like our portraits just with thousand different people in them... It would switch anytime and would be like a story, which is really interesting. I wonder how they made themselves small enough to fit so many in there without magic-”
Noticing how he had began to ramble, the Gryffindor blushed lightly and stuffed his mouth with some mashed potato so he could give the other time to talk.

The Breakfast Club
Alexx tilted her head to the side, listening to everything. It was so hard to keep up with a group conversation, and she silently wondered when her social meter would run out and she would become like Mari, silent and unmoved. But she smiled still, nodding along as the others spoke. Alexx smiled widely at Scott, who was the first to volunteer. "Thank you Kanye, very cool." She announces, nodding her head at him. She didn't expect him to understand her Muggle jokes, but it was a force of habit.
"There was a Seer in my family- decades ago, never met 'em. Not me, though. Maybe I could read something, but I'm no prodigy. At least, not that I'm aware of." Alexx giggled a bit, covering her mouth as she smiled. She would love to find out that she was great at something like Runes or Divination. Something other than giving out detentions or lecturing first years in the halls. Being good at anything other than delegation would be a blessing straight from Merlin himself.
Alexx thought about the idea of her being in Care of Magical Creatures. "I like animals, I just don't think I'm very passionate about them, you know? They're cool, but I feel my calling being towards reading and not exactly... creatures. I'll be caught learning how to read Runes faster than I'll be a Magizoologist." She laughed again, looking around at everyone else.
Thinking about what Alan said, Alexx nodded. "Yes, I recall that as well. I'd like very much to be able to do wandless magic. Plus, my older brother, Mikey, took Runes. He said that he loved it. Wouldn't stop talking about it." Mikey absolutely adored Ancient Runes. Runes and Divination was his thing. Everyone in her family had a "thing", actually. Mikey was good at Runic Divination, Tex was good at Quidditch, Alexx was good at being a Prefect, and Emmaline would... Find out next year. Though, she sort of felt bad. It wasn't like she took a class to learn how to be a Prefect. She didn't exactly work for it. And if she gave it up or got fired, then what else was she good at? Charms? But it was boring to be good at Charms. Everyone is good at that. Or... should be, anyways.
Looking at Alan, she laughed. "You mean like a film? Or perhaps a video? I might be a Pureblood, but I grew up in the Muggle world. I am already familiar with what Muggles do, I don't need to learn about it in a class." That was the truth. Alexx spent her childhood in the Muggle world, and she was very familiar with their technology and habits and what have you. It wasn't something that she found fascinating, mostly because it was so familiar to her. She didn't really want to learn about it all in a class. Sure, perhaps they would teach her things that she didn't know, like more about Muggle politics or something like that, but that just seemed boring. There was truly no need. "I would much prefer wandless magic, like how Alan mentioned." She wouldn't fault anyone for wanting to take Muggle Studies, however. From the outside looking in, she was sure it was fascinating. But living your life with your foot in both doors already just made the whole concept boring.

"You're welcome... Kanye."
Must be French for "very much".
You're welcome very much? Hm.
"You grew up Muggle?!" Scott's eyes widened with interest.
He had himself been surrounded with magic for as long as he could remember. Not a minute of his life at home had gone by without the sound of some distant incantation making itself heard from another room or floor, nor had a corner of their home not been hit by an accidental spell at least once.
Their bathroom mirror would tell him just how to tie his tie.
The stars over his bed would change constellations over the course of a year.
He'd gotten fed gruel by a floating spoon as a baby.
"That's so cool. Why did you do that? I know nothing about it... Even when we visit my grandparents, they're muggles you know, all we talk about is magic! It's why I want to study it, I think... feels like I know embarrassingly little."
Scott crushed a piece of sausage thoughtfully on his plate, then gave Alan a teasing eye from the side.
"...know more than you do, though. Videos, Alan, really?" He laughed lightheartedly, and shook his head. "I'm only joking. But I guess it means I have at least a little knowledge! It's thanks to my dad, really. Music and movies, that's what we have... He reads a lot of muggle things, too.
But you're right, I suppose. I'd rather know my magic real good..."
Scott leaned back in his chair, full for the moment being. He smiled at Emma, who'd also showed interest in the more theoretical subjects. It gladdened him greatly that he wouldn't be alone with those, whilst others flew brooms or... rode? Whatever it is you do with Magical Creatures.
"Lying our way through Divination, you say? I really hope that's an option. The numbers I think I'll manage, Mother will make sure, but if they ask me to interpret a dream then I'll have no idea what to say. Just last night, for instance, I dreamed I got eaten by a Alan's cat... Not sure I want to know what that means, anyway. "

The Breakfast Club
Emma spent the time playing with the food in front of her, playing with absentmindedly staring off into the other tables that were still tainted with plates and cups on its surface. Fingering the fragile plate, she diverted herself to look up at the floating candles above the bunch. She often zoned out of the conversation only to be brought back by Scott's exclamation, causing her to chuckle quietly.
Soon the thought of the next period began to dwindle slowly. The walk was so far. The founders had thought of moving staircases but not another way of transportation throughout the school like the Floo? Of course, she didn't want to go, but she didn't really have a choice unless she wanted another detention, and she had received enough of those in one year to last a decade's worth of displeasure from her parents. Her mother didn't need to be a witch to know how detentions worked in the wizarding world. Summer break was going to be a blast.
"Really? My mom tells me not to use magic at the house, but its kinda hard being the only Muggle in the house. Something about breaking the rules just for kids, I think. Your grandparents sound cool. Mine just sit around and watch TV if they're not preparing dinner or tossing around a Quaffle in the backyard." She spoke, removing her hands from the table and placing them under the table. Silently fidgeting with the pearls on her bracelet, she followed the conversation, her head bobbing to each person that talked as a sign of respect. She didn't want to seem like she had anything better to do because she definitely didn't unless preparing for the next class exceeded socialization.
"It's like a camera... well it is a camera. Think of um... like chocolate frog cards, but on a screen. I think anyway, I'm not the best at explaining things." She giggled, shrugging heavily without a twinge of regret or embarrassment. She had stuttered a bit and maybe even given the wrong idea, but she was human after all. People did make mistakes, and maybe even different types of people that well, weren't exactly human.
