If there was anything Pericles' stay at Hogwarts had taught him, it was that open wounds were less of an "if" than they were a "when". It was best to be prepared in a pinch, in the event someone was hurt, particularly when one didn't have time to cast a spell. In preparation for his fifth year, he celebrated the impending graduation like any Ravenclaw party animal would: brewing a potion.
With a fluid ounce of Dittany Extract added to a cold cauldron, he took his time crushing Shrake Spines in a mortar, reducing them to a coarse powder. Peri scooped the stuff into the mix and with a twist of a dial, cranking the heat to high, and waved his wand over the top. It was left to stew for the full twenty-five minutes, and the moment the liquid evaporated, he came back from the book he was reading to turn it down to medium. Ten fluid ounces of water were splashed into the dehydrated concoction with a whispered "Aguamenti". Three anti-clockwise stirs, three carefully measured tablespoons of Flobberworm Mucus, and five more anti-clockwise turns.
Pericles took a brief break to rinse his hands, skimming the instruction book to triple-check his measurements, and added three measures of Standard ingredient with one clockwise stir. The temperature was dialed back until the heat turned off, and after adding two dittany leaves to the liquid, he watched in silence as they sunk to the bottom. One last wave over the top and the brew was complete. Peri smiled in satisfaction, bottling the mix, feeling better prepped for whatever bizarre encounter the school threw at him next.

Tes wasn't exactly sure about her potion's class. She wasn't always the best at sticking to the rules, not because she didn't want to, but rather because her mind wandered to the outside world rather than what was in front of her a little bit too often. After the very first class had only consisted of writing down notes and staring mournfully into the distance as Tes wished she was running around in the sunlight, she was in fact quite afraid she wouldn't be passing the class at all.
Come the practical application of the first potion she would be making, she was suddenly more engaged as she remembered the potion she was about to make would be useful, rather than simply one more thing to stare at for a grade. It was herbicide! She'd seen her mums use it on the wilder parts of the garden and was struck with inspiration! This would make a great birthday gift! Heart set on success, she set to brewing.
Taking a quick glance at the recipe, she checked the ingredients sitting within arm's reach, and was relieved to see the instructions were easy enough even she thought she could follow them. Not to mention it started with the fun part, crushing! Throwing 4 lionfish spines into her mortar a bit haphazardly, Tes set to crushing with a gleeful passion. Once they were a fine powder, she added 2 measurements of Standard Ingredient (she had to ask her deskmate for help with the measurement) and began crushing that into the mixture as well. 3 measures of that into the cauldron and a wand wave later, and Tes was sat, watching the time tick by. Minute by slow minute. As 50 minutes had passed, she added two measures of Horklump juice to the cauldron, heated it carefully until it was what she hoped was a medium heat for 10 seconds, and then added 2 blobs of flobberworm mucus, giggling as its unpleasant stretchiness gooped into the cauldron. She glanced at the clock to double check which way was clockwise, stirred 4 times, waved her wand one last time, and leaned forward eagerly to check her potion.
With a gleeful hop and clap at the color it was meant to be, she set to bottling it, looking forward to sharing it with her mums.

ReducioHanako was not one to accept challenges for the fun of it, even if he did feel confident about his chances of winning. So one day when Burnett suggested to see which one of the two could make a potion faster, he was not that impressed at first. Still, the young boy thought to himself that he might as well entertain the other boy. “ And just what sort of potion are you thinking? It's not a love potion, is it? “ he joked with a raised eyebrow and a cheeky grin.
“ Bloody hell, no! “ his quick refusal make Hana laugh a bit. The red-haired slytherin then begun flipping through the pages of his potions textbook before holding up a particular page for Hana to see. “ How about this one? You could probably use it if you get knocked out in a dueling competition or something, right? “
Skeptically, Hanako scanned the page in front of him. Half of the ingredients weren’t recognisable but somewhat familiar. This was not a potion he practised a lot on. Sure, he was better than potions than he ever was in his earlier years. But he clearly still had a lot to catch up on after 3 years of doing less than the bare minimum for a subject like potions. “ Well, I suppose I am a popular target for more reasons than one~ .”
Burnett smirked. “ That's for sure. “ Nothing but truths there.
Hanako pondered for a while before smirking. “ You wanna make the challenge more fun? Shouldn't winners get something more than just bragging rights? “
“Something more? Like what? “
“ Loser owes the winner a free meal from the three broomsticks. How does that sound? “ The made Burnett grin.
“ Sounds good to me. But I warn you, I've practiced for this. Do you have all your ingredients? “ he said as he rolled up his sleeves.
The warning seemed to have fallen on deaths ears as Hanako gave an eyeroll. “ Yea sure sure, thanks for the warning. I'll remember it when you're paying for my lunch. As for ingredients.... I should have spares. Meet back here in 5 minutes? “. And so thats how he found himself here in this challenge. Over a cauldron, rolled up sleeves, and a green notebook next to him with reminders on the unfamiliar ingredients. Shouldn’t be too hard, right? He had done this once in class, he could do it again. One thing he was better at than potions was his unwavering (and sometimes unneeded ) confidence.
Just as the timer started, he got to work: first adding purified water to his children. With that done, he moved on to chop 3 murlap tentacles, adding them to the mix. The sliminess made his shoulders tense, but distracting enough to keep his eyes away from how his competitor was doing. The faster he deals with it, the faster he’ll win. While waiting for it to simmer, he grinded a more tolerable ingredient to look at: the spines of lionfishes. It took only 3 to be made into a coarse powder, ready to be added to the cauldron after it was done simmering for 5 minutes. Then, before he stirred the cauldron 3 times in a clockwise motion, Hanako added 2 measures of salt. Once nicely stirred, he went on to adding 5 drops of wormwood essence, as well as a sprig of dittany. Both ingredients, thankfully less gross to work with.
At this point he felt an almost overwhelming urge to see how Burnett was doing, but with the power of bragging rights and a free meal, he went back to work. Stirring the cauldron 5 times, this time counter clockwise.
At the end, he rapidly grabbed his wand and waved it as was taught in class. “Done~” he chirped. His victorious grin fell at a rapid pace when he had seen Burnetts progress.
Well, at least they both finished without incident.

ReducioPerhaps it was because he was in a competitive dueling team, with winning hungry members. But a ‘tie’ was pretty much a loss anyway. What had they done that was so different? Hanako hadn’t had the pleasure of observing Burnett while he worked on his own potion. But from the sounds he heard, he could assume he was definitely working at a more rushed pace than him. The sounds from Burnetts rapid stirring are still fresh in Hanako’s memory. The black haired boy moved much more gracefully on his potion, that's for certain. If only he moved as fast as Burnett did, would he had won? The absence of bragging rights and a free meal had him determined to have an answer to that.
This time within the privacy of his own room, he went to work on another Revival Potion. He did the same exact thing he did during the competition. This time, with no helpful notebooks to look through when he was uncertain. He was always better with more practice, than just more reading. The previously unfamiliar ingredients now stuck in his head, alongside the process of the revival potion. Firstly, he chopped 3 murtlap tentacles. Hana noticed its texture bothered him less this time. Just as he was done, he filled the cauldron with water, immediately adding the tentacles with ease. While he set it to brew for 5 minutes, he prepared the other ingredients as fast as he could. Quickly grinding a coarse powder from 3 lionfish spines before adding it to the cauldron after 5 minutes was up. Immediately, he grabbed the salt nearby and added 2 measures of it.
Next, he stirred it 3 times in a clockwise motion before grabbing Essence of Wormwood and dropping exactly 5 drops. Noticeably, he was not as careful with the drops as he was last time. After adding one more sprig of dittany, he stirred 5 times in a counter-clockwise way this time rapidly, while making sure the potion was going smoothly so far. Knowing exactly where his wand was, he grabbed it and waved over the cauldron. As if he finally remembered to take a breath, he sighed as he witnessed his hard word. Who knew rushed potion making could be so draining? Taking his time into making sure it didn’t spill a single drop, he carefully filled 4 glass vials of the potion. He watched its bottled up contents as it rested in his gentle grip, taking his time into making sure it didn’t spill a single drop. Perhaps it seems like a rematch was in order?

Potion 3/4| Muffling Drought
Ingredients required | Lethe River Water, Bat Spleens, Eel Eyes, Leeches
Roleplay (200 words min) |
ReducioClearly, potions was not his favourite subject. All those memorising ingredients, and steps, and reading, it was just not his style. But since the incident with that asshole Ravenclaw Argentum, he didn’t want to make it a habit of relying on others to make potions he needed. Therefore, studying needed to be done. Starting from the basics from the very beginning: 1st year.
One of the many failed potions he was forced to do: the muffling drought. Sweet memories of his prior lazyness was a nice memory indeed. Things simply were simpler back then. He looked over the bat spleens, leeches and eel eyes, a grimace forming on his face immediately. Oh yea, he remembered why the muffling drought was one of the harder potions for him to do as an 11 year old. Time to make new memories, he supposed.
Firstly, he added 4 drops of lethe river water into the cauldron. And that would pretty much be the end of all the steps he could do confidently for this particular potion. He sighed and went back to the 2 bat spleens, his frown growing deeper with each slice of its spleens. Determined to finish this quick, he rushed through to dice all the spleens before adding them to the cauldron. Relieved, he began stirring the cauldron 2 times in a clockwise motion, already dreading the next few steps to the potion. While making the mixture in the pot be set to high heat, he spent the next ten minutes trying to reconfigure his brain into seeing leeches and eel eyes as something else. Like tiny mud monsters or something. The new imagery of the leeches did little to calm his disgust.
After 10 minutes was up, he let the cauldron cool down by reducing heat so it simmered slowly. With haste and while holding his breath, he dropped 2 eel eyes to the pot. The time used to stir the cauldron 2 times in an anti-clockwise motion was used to force himself to forget the feeling of holding eel eyes. And of course, as if this potion was designed to torment him, the best ingredient was saved for last. Dropping the 3 leeches into the mortar, he continued to grind them until nothing was left but a sticky paste. “ grrrrooooosss grooooss urghhhhhhh grosssss” he mumbled to himself with each grind. Thankfully, it was soon over and he added 3 spoonfuls of the finished paste into the cauldron. With eagerness, he stirred it 5 times in an anti-clockwise motion before setting the heat to a medium. He released a heavy sigh. That was certainly a huge battle of will power.
While waiting for the potion to brew, Hanako took a nice relatively long shower. Hoping his memories of making the potion would wash away as well. Sadly that did not work, and when he returned 35 minutes later, the potion was still there. At least it was over. Lastly, he took his wand and waved it over the cauldron.
Yep, he’s never doing this again.

Axyen also learned about Babbling Beverage thanks to professor Regan's class, Axyen saw a perfect opportunity to play a small prank on the professor. Axyen walked past the wall one time. A private place to make potions... Axyen thought, turning around and passing the wall a second time. Axyen brought his textbook, cauldrons, and paid for the necessary ingredients to brew Babbling Beverage, Axyen was excited to brew the potion, so Axyen turned for the final time, taking a few more steps, suddenly, the walls began shaking as it revealed a door. Even though Axyen read about the Room of Requirement but no amount of studying could help Axyen prepare for the magical experience entering the Room of Requirement. Axyen grabbed the doorknob and turned it, opening. Axyen pushed the door open, the space looked like the Potions classroom, a perfect place for brewing a potion. Axyen looked around, genuinely shocked by the environment around him. Axyen placed the cauldron first, Axyen earlier had placed the tools he would need inside the cauldron, so he took them out, Brass and scales and a mortar. Axyen got ready to start making this potion.
Axyen put the dried poppy head in the mortar and kept crushing it until it turned into powder, just as the instructions said, Axyen read the instructions over and over, and despite seemingly knowing them by heart, Axyen still had a bad feeling so brought the textbook anyways so Axyen still knew what to do in the event that he forgot the he needed to do. Axyen put the powder that was once dried poppy head into the cauldron, along with that, Axyen placed two(2) Valerian Sprigs into the cauldron, before stirring three(3) times counter-clockwise. Axyen brought his Protective Gloves as he put them on and added three(3) Aconite Blossoms to the cauldron. Axyen proceeded to take out his wand and wave it, just as the instructions said. Axyen left the potion to brew for thirty(30) minutes before he added a Unicorn Hair which was really expensive neutralized the poisonous effects of the potion. Axyen proceeded to look at the textbook again, he looked back at the cauldron, stirring three(3) times counter-clockwise. Axyen added one(1) sprig of Dittany to the cauldron, then he stirred five(5) times, counter-clockwise. Axyen was surprised nothing blew up, maybe he wasn't that bad as potions, as he originally thought.
Axyen was excited, this was the final step into completing his first potion outside of the classroom, Axyen took out his wand once again and waved it, Axyen knew a lot about Babbling Beverage and did make it for a prank, but this was a proud moment for Axyen, as he finally could do a weird victory dance, good thing he was in the Room of Requirement and not the Room of Judgement, Axyen knew what this meant, he took a crystal phial and contained the contents of the cauldron or better yet, Babbling Beverage and now Axyen could cause some fun, yet harmless mischief.
However, Axyen needed to test the potion out somehow, Axyen remembered how professor Regan took out a spoon and just spoke, yet the potion didn't last too long. Maybe Axyen could test it like that? Only if there was a convenient spoon in a drawer, Axyen didn't know why he looked around the Room of Requirement, but there ended up being a small spoon which allowed Axyen to drop a bit of the Babbling Beverage and with the spoon Axyen drank some of it. "Allreiighte..." Axyen was stunned, he couldn't speak properly, he tried harder. "IIisswe ieewetyt wwwrroouukiuuuunnng?" Axyen wanted to laugh, but felt that him laughing while under the effects would be slightly weird, thankfully, because Axyen only drank a small amount which he scooped up with a spoon, the effect didn't last much longer. "There we go." Axyen said, smiling to himself. Time to properly plan this prank. Axyen thought to himself, as he left the Room of Requirement, but this certainly wouldn't be Axyen's last visit to the Room of Requirement.

Word Count | 571 /200Hufflepuffs were known for fire- both starting it and being burnt by it. Lea had managed to avoid a decent amount of it (asides from when everyone got burnt in dueling) and she preferred keeping it that way. The third year had been half-tempted to make the Burn-Healing Paste, but that was for after a fire. Stopping the damage before it happened was a different potion, the one she focused on now as she entered the Potions classroom with her textbook in hand, the Black Fire Potion recipe bookmarked with a little tab. The subject had never been Lea's focus, but she felt confident that this potion would go well. Or at least well enough to be effective.
"Alright, what've we got..." She murmured to herself, resting the book open as she found her ingredients and supplies, setting it all up in easy reach. Brown eyes scanned the instructions before starting, deciding to measure out the 1 fluid ounce of Salamander Blood in advance so that it wouldn't become an issue later. But otherwise the directions didn't seem overly complicated, soothing some of the girl's hidden nervousness. 3 sprigs of mint fell into the mortar, slowly crushed as she pressed the pestle down and around the bowl, watching as the leaves split and glittered with sap until it became more of a paste. She gave it a few extra scrapes before measuring out 1 teaspoon- it was a teaspoon right? her eyes flicked between the two as she checked again once, twice- and tapping it into the cauldron. There was a little more caution with the 2 Bursting Mushrooms, unsure if they still could, but they would be sliced instead of crushed before also entering the cauldron. It- really didn't look like much right now, a bit of a perplexed look passing her face as she glanced in. Nothing was wrong though, so the girl stirred the mixture 3 times in a clockwise motion before waving her wand atop the concoction.
"10 minutes... do y'just wait?" The heat was turned to high so it seemed like a bit of a risk to leave it unattended. How ironic it would be- Hufflepuff burns down classroom trying to make a potion that would make her immune to fire. A slight smile escaped, staring up at the ceiling and rereading the recipe as she waited for the minutes to pass by.
It was time. A hand reached to reduce the heat while the other poured in the Salamander Blood, putting the container back as she grabbed the spoon to stir the contents, this time counter-clockwise, 8 times. The Wartcaps also needed to be crushed, 2 placed in the mortar and subsequently turned into a fine-ish powder with the pestle. She rolled her shoulders before bringing the mortar over to pour it all into the cauldron. "Should probably work out..." It was a distant yet prevalent thought, something to ponder as the 20 seconds passed and she could turn off the heat. A couple more stirs and a final wave of her wand, the potion seemed right? The hufflepuff shrugged, quickly pouring it into vials as the instructions advised.
"Well, hopefully it doesn't fail- that'd be unfortunate." Lea winced slightly at the thought, but chose to ignore it in favor of cleaning up her space and packing up. That would be enough potions for the day until she gained some more confidence in the subject.

Reducio"Hey, Tone. Want to have a contest to see who can brew a potion faster?" Jack asked of his dormmate one day while they were in his room, in the mood for a challenge. In truth, he had already prepared for said challenge, but that didn't make it any less of one. Hanako used to be pretty bad with potions, but as of late he had become rather good at making them, especially because, like Jack, he was a perfectionist.
Hanako raised a brow at the question. “And just what sort of potion are you thinking? It's not a love potion, is it?”
The redhead looked horrfied at the prospect. "Bloody hell, no! Um..." He opened his potions book, Magical Drafts and Potions by Arsenius Jigger, and flipped through it before finding the one he was looking for. "How about this one? You could probably use it if you get knocked out in a dueling competition or something, right?" Holding up the book for his peer to see, he pointed to the Revive Potion.
The Japanese boy inspected the book curiously. “Well, I suppose I am a popular target for more reasons than one~.”
Jack smirked at that. "That's for sure."
Hanako pondered it for a few seconds before a mischievous look came over him. “You wanna make the challenge more fun? Shouldn't winners get something more than just bragging rights?”
The Welsh boy looked back at him curiously. "Something more? Like what?"
The other teen thought about this for a moment. “Loser owes the winner a free meal from The Three Broomsticks. How does that sound?”
Jack grinned. "Sounds good to me. But I warn you, I've practiced for this." If they were doing this with stakes, it was only fair that Hanako knew. "Do you have all your ingredients?"
Hanako rolled his eyes with a grin of his own. “Yea sure sure, thanks for the warning. I'll remember it when you're paying for my lunch. As for ingredients...” He gently took Jack's potions textbook to give it a quick read. “I should have spares. Meet back here in 5 minutes?” He handed back the book.
"Will do," Jack answered with a salute and was off.
In five minutes, both boys were back with their respective ingredients and started a timer. As soon as the timer began, they got to work.
Jack started by filling his cauldron with purified water which took little to no effort, making sure it wasn't too empty nor too full. Then he chopped up three of the five murtlap tentacles, trying not to be too picky about how he chopped them up. Come to think of it, when he had followed the recipe before, it had never told him what to do with the remaining two murtlap tentacles.
Well, he hardly had time to scratch his head over that now. While allowing the cauldron of water and chopped-up tentacles to simmer for five minutes, Jack began to grind up the three spines of lionfish into powder. Again, he had to sort of rush himself because this was something he got caught up with before - how fine the powder was. The instructions even told him to grind them into coarse powder and he couldn't afford to waste time making the powder any more fine than his five minutes allowed. When those five minutes were up, he added them to the mixture in the cauldron, resisting the temptation to look over to see how his competitor was doing.
Once that was done, Jack measured out salt twice and added it to the cauldron before stirring it clockwise three times. From there, he added five drops of the Essence of Wormwood and the one sprig of Dittany. Finally, he stirred his concoction five times counter-clockwise before waving his wand over the cauldron.
"Done!" he cried at the exact same time Hanako did. Glancing over, he stared at his peer before bursting into laughter. It seemed they had a tie.
"I guess either neither of us are getting a free meal or both of us are," he laughed, pouring his newly-made Revive Potion into vials.

Roleplay (200 words min) | WC: 756ReducioHow eager Alexander was to brew an extra-curricular potion without needing to seek assistance. He had put so much effort into potions starting from his very first weeks at Hogwarts that he came to the conclusion that it was now the time to reap the harvest of his hard work. Yet, by no means, could it be considered a simple task. A potion like Black Fire - such an intimidating name! - in particular, had the potential to be quite compelling for a young boy to brew. However, the bursting motivation called passion also had its own kind of potential: an unyielding determination. Decisiveness, to tell the truth, was not and has never been one of Alexander's distinguishing features, aside from the subjects that he always craved to learn more about, and luckily Alexander proved to be quite fond of the glamorous world of black cauldrons and variegated ingredients. "Give it a go!", Alexander tried to silence the last mutters of disapproval raised by the shy boy inside him. His readiness could be regarded as flawless now.
Considering that all of them were gifts of mother - therefore sacred - nature, Alexander touched, almost caressed the ingredients laying silently in front of him - except the salamander blood, to avoid the possible accusations of his being a vampire. He gently smelled the beautiful flavour of mint and felt the slightly uneven surface of the mushrooms. As a grandson of a renowned herbologist, he had been taught that the first rule of potion-making was to respect the ingredients. His granny had a habit of equating them with the sacrificial lamb - just like the lamb itself, all the ingredients were selfless and ready to give their life to create something useful for their owners. "A rather unorthodox approach," some may say, but this principle represented in that simile was like a family heirloom Alexander so proudly inherited.
He took a deep breath, and a sweet wave of excitement travelled from the tip of his head until the very bottom of his heel. Three sprigs of mint were obediently laying over the mortar, waiting for their unavoidable fate. Alex started to crush them, observing that the sprigs were softening with each stroke of him. After a while, there were no springs anymore, his purposeful effort apparently yielded a minty paste. It meant that the first step of the brewing process was completed. Alex, with a hesitant expression on his face, checked the smoothness of the paste with the teaspoon. It was nice at best, passable at worst. He added one spoon of the paste he prepared into the cauldron. "Knife... knife..." he started to mumble, not realising it was just in front of his eyes. His search, yet, did not last long and a silent scream of happiness arose: "Aha!"
He had to slice the mushrooms now. One. Two. Three... As the sharp, cold edge of the knife touched the pale skin of the mushrooms, more slices appeared above the mortar. Alex threw them into the cauldron as well. The ladle turned inside the cauldron three times, drawing clockwise circles. Alex's considerably short wand, an interesting meeting point of walnut wood and unicorn hair, was waved. The flames under the cauldron seemed enough high to Alex's eyes. According to the recipe, he had to wait for ten minutes now. And how difficult it was to wait while one was terribly excited about the outcome! He endured. Then, having lowered the heat to a slight simmer, he prepared one fluid ounce of salamander blood. Not more, not less. The blood started to melt in the mixture inside the cauldron. "Anti-clockwise..." Alex reminded himself. "Eight times..." - one more reminder. Wartcaps now were completely alone, waiting their turn to jump into the steaming cauldron. Alex took and crushed two of them until they became eligible to be called a fine powder. The last ingredient was thus becoming ready. Once dried, now crushed wartcaps met at last with their boiled old friends. Alex, without attempting to stir the mixture, stood still for twenty long seconds. Then in a quick instant, turned off the heat. His heartbeat was increasing now that he was getting so close to the final point. Seven last stirrings - clockwise. And the last hit: A wave wand.
Relieved but still curious, he donned the protective gloves and began ladle out the potion into small, glimmering vials. A feeling of satisfaction filled his cells. He thanked the ingredients with a genuine expression of appreciation on his radiant face.

Since returning to Hogwarts on the first of June, and honestly since her months at home before that, Aly Salinger had become a little bit obsessed with breaking the rules.
It wasn't just breaking rules that had been laid down by authority - no. This counted the very rules of time and space themselves, and one such rule was that humans - wizards, even - could not fly on their own. But even this rule was not set in the stone walls of the Potions classroom as Aly slipped in through its unlocked door one afternoon in early June; the professor was inside, which meant that the classroom was open for use. So perhaps she wasn't breaking every rule. But definitely the one about unaided human flight, which she knew to have exceptions, anyway. There had been examples throughout history of wizards managing to fly unaided - He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, just to, well, name one - and Aly was determined that if other wizards could do it, perhaps she could, too.
(She had been on the ground too long. Not playing Quidditch for over half a year was starting to get to her, truly.)
Flashing a tight-lipped, polite smile to the Potions professor - Aly wasn't quite as proficient or obsessive of a brewer as her best friend Dee, but she still liked the kindly Irish woman just fine - the young Ravenclaw let her cauldron full of ingredients, purchased forever ago in preparation for the year, thud onto a nearby workstation and meandered round the room for a moment. First to the sink to fill up a glass full of six ounces' worth of tap water, then on her way back, over to grab a mortar, a pestle, and an extra bowl.
Back at the workstation, Aly unloaded everything from her cauldron - the griffin claws, the small bottle of saltpeter, the lone peacock feather, the container of shimmering fairy wings, the mid-sized jar of bat spleens, her textbook, an extra book that she'd borrowed from the library and that had nothing at all to do with potions, and of course the collection of glass phials in which she hoped to store a finished potion soon. It was good that she was getting rid of all of these - the bat spleens, especially, had started to smell of late.
To begin, Aly plucked up the pair of griffin claws and added them both to the small mortar; her pestle crashed into them a moment later, pressing and crushing and grinding until there was nothing left of the claws except a fine dark powder. What an arm workout that had been. Aly dumped the powder into the pre-acquired bowl and went on to measure out a single measure's worth of saltpeter, adding it in with the powder and softly stirring them together, as gentle as a mother with a babe. Her inquiries into the bending of gravity's strength would not be successful if she rushed about haphazardly and did everything without care.
When white had mixed with black to form a sufficiently greyish powder, Aly poured the glass of water she'd gotten earlier into her cauldron and set it atop the heat, turning it all the way up to high. It only took a few moments of standing around, tapping her foot, for the water to heat thoroughly through - she didn't want it to boil over, necessarily. As soon as it began to even slightly bubble, indicating heat, Aly dumped the powder mixture into the water and reached for the lone bluish-green feather with its glimmering eye. It would make a fine stirring stick for this concoction.
The young Ravenclaw stirred with the feather until all of the powder had dissolved into the water, keeping a close eye on the professor nearby. Would the older woman find it suspicious that Aly was brewing a Floating Potion, or at the very least attempting one? No, she assured herself, we learnt it in Flying, so why would it be suspicious? I'm just a fourth-year student brewing a fourth-year potion. Nothing to see here.
Noticing that the powder was gone, turning the entire cauldronful of water to a light grey, Aly turned the heat to low and waited a bit so that the potion could slightly cool off. During this waiting period, still casting once-in-a-while glances at the Potions professor, Aly took a small knife and used it to dig four of the smelly bat spleens out of her jar of the squishy grossness, scoring lines into them with the long side of the blade. When she was sure that the potion was no longer as scalding hot as it had previously been, Aly scraped the scored spleens into the pot with a splash, making sure they went in - One, two, three, four. Again reaching for the peacock feather, she stirred clockwise the same amount of times, this time counting aloud so as to not break her concentration with her easily-distracted mind: "One... two... three... four. There we go."
Six pairs of the bluish fairies' wings were next on the list, as Aly noted from the recipe in her textbook, and she reached for the container to easily pop it open and add the required six to the cauldron. Letting the peacock feather sit in the cauldron, essentially adding it as an ingredient, Aly took a step back and ensured that her potion's temperature was correctly still at low before taking a seat nearby and glancing at the clock to check the time. In forty-four minutes exactly, she'd have to remove the feather; but for now, she could settle in with the non-potions book she'd checked out from the library and read that to pass the time.
Time passed, indeed, as forty-four minutes seemed to vanish in the blink of an eye; before Aly knew it, her time was up, and she sprang to her feet to snatch the feather from her cauldron as if it would explode if left in even a second longer. Drawing her aspen wand from where it had stayed thus far in the wand pocket of her robes, Aly waved it over the cauldron with a sense of relief and pride. She was no Dee, but she could brew a potion, too.
Carefully, she picked up her phials and began to bottle her brew. Now all that was left was to test it...

Had permission to state that Professor Regan was present and to mention Dee.

Potion Brewing Form

Ingredients required | 3 Murtlap Tentacles, 1 Jar of Honey, 2 Measures of Bubotuber Pus, 6 Seashells, 2 Measures of Flobberworm Mucus

ReducioIt was no secret that Hogwarts had a habit of causing a lot of injuries. Spell practice, general tomfoolery, Dori's habit of climbing trees poorly, and broom accidents that left more than a tiny bruise. While they had homemade salves from their mom, the muggle stuff didn't do the trick like wizard stuff would. So, when there was extra time in class one day to make a potion of choice, Dori got to work.
They turned their cauldron to medium flame and let it preheat. This was a recipe that didn't require a ton of stuff done in advance, so while they pre-heat their cauldron they crushed the shells and chatted idly with a neighbor while they worked on their own potion. Once it had been around ten minutes they added three murtlap tentacles and a jar of honey. Truly the ingredient combinations sometimes made them recoil. But luckily this was not an ingested potion. They stirred the cauldron five times clockwise and gently put it back on the table.
They added two ounces of bubotuber pus, which again, revolting, and stirred it three times counter-clockwise before returning it to the flame. They waved their wand over the cauldron before sitting down, letting the cauldron simmer on low heat. They drew idly in their notebook. This was the part of potions that sucked. Just waiting for the time to pass by. After they got tired of drawing, they pulled out some of their homework to work on in advance. Once the 60 minutes had passed, and Dori was tired of transfiguration, they took three pinches of the pre-crushed shells and added it in, as well as two measures of flobberworm mucus.
Their attention returned to the student next to them, trying to assist with their potion while occasionally stirring their own, clockwise of course. It took too long for Dori's aching arm but finally it was a paste. With a flourish of alder wood, the potion was done. The heat was turned off and they did the other batch of waiting for it to cool before putting it in a pretty jar that Dori brought from their dorm. This would help with duelling, surely.

Ingredients required | 4 Sprigs of dried Lavender, 3 Chamomile Petals, 1 Crocodile Heart, 3 Sprigs of Peppermint, 2 Measures of Standard Ingredient, 1 Poppy Head
Roleplay (200 words min) |
ReducioAnother not so secret secret of Hogwarts was how many of the kids that attended school here experienced some kind of traumatic experience. Dori had too many to think about, too many that prodded at the edges of their memory. Luckily, there was magic. Magic could make very cool things, such as a calming draught. It was a potion that once they learned it, they had decided to always keep some on hand. Just in case something super traumatizing happened.
While the Potions Classroom had initially felt cold and daunting, the warmth of fires and quiet chopping and grinding of ingredients had become a lot more comfortable to them. In their mortar they ground four sprigs of lavender and three chamomile petals, grinding until it was an incredibly fine powder. It took time but Dori did it with love. They separated out four measures of the powder before dicing the crocodile heart (ew) and adding that in as well. They stirred once then turned on the heat to high. Dori kept their eye on the time since this step only required 60 seconds. They lowered the cauldron to medium heat before grinding three sprigs of peppermint, less fine than the lavender and chamomile, and adding that as well. They stirred five times counter-clockwise, waved their wand... and began the dreaded step. Waiting. Today they took their extra time to work on a letter to their parents. It was sad to say it always took too long to write, Dori weaving words together that would placate their parents worries enough that they didn't panic.
After about 70 minutes, Dori realized how long it had been and reduced the heat to low. Two measures of standard ingredient were added, the cauldron was stirred three times clockwise. They chastised themself for not grinding the poppy head when they had over an hour to do it, but luckily it didn't need to be ground a lot and added that to the cauldron as well. This time the high heat was only allowed to last 40 seconds before the heat was turned off. A final step of stirring three times, clockwise, again, and a wave of the wand and it was done. They poured it in a potion bottle and kept it stored in their bag.
Approved, MéabhPotion | Sleeping Draught
Ingredients required | 4 Sprigs of Lavender, 6 Measures of Standard Ingredient, 2 “Blobs” of Flobberworm Mucus, 4 Valerian Sprigs, 1 head of Gillyweed
Roleplay (200 words min) |
ReducioThe last, but certainly not least, in the trio of poorly kept secrets was the fact that Dori didn't sleep well on nights when the nightmares and memories were relentless. Even Buttons who acted as a weight on their chest couldn't help. The sleeping draught was a godsend on those restless nights, and the bags under Dori's eyes made it obvious that they were out. With a slow yawn they added four sprigs of lavender and two measures of standard ingredient to the mortar, using the pestle to grind it into a paste. Two blobs of flobberworm mucus plopped ungracefully into the cauldron, and two more measures of standard ingredient joined it. They turned on the heat to something perfectly between too hot and too little heat for 30 seconds. Their crushed mixture was added, Dori almost dumping all of it before remembering it was only three measures of it. After waving their wand they gave their table-mate a heads up of the time that they needed to be back by for the potion, and they laid their head down to take a little nap.
After around 68 minutes the table-mate woke them up, Dori grumbling the whole time. It took them about two full minutes to come to and added two more measures of standard ingredient to the cauldron. They turned the cauldron to high for about a minute before adding four of the valerian sprigs to the mixture. Their hand slowly stirred the cauldron seven times, clockwise, as they yawned at the potion once again. Gillyweed was haphazardly torn and added, another round of stirring (this time three times, counter-clockwise). A small boil for 30 seconds, and finally with a wave of a wand it was complete. Dori really couldn't want to sleep tonight.
