It is one ability per year UNLESS you are an approved special race. Then your character will gain Auto Abilities in years 1, 3, 5, and 7 that apply to the special race. Some abilities are not able to be applied for or gained by special abilities such as Occlumency, Legilimancy, and Animagus.
