Magical Masquerade: The entrance

From what she was noticing with the back of her mind, Professor Clairmont was trying to get as many people out as it was possible. The danger was still present. But there — in the dome — it didn't seem so. At least at this very moment, when Dealla was speaking, and they were inside the anti-hex dome.

Her words were actually making sense. Disregarding what kind of explanation Jack for some reason was due, he indeed couldn't provide them if he would be dead. One couldn't say he was particularly alive with all the zombie mode, pale skin and empty eyes, but yeah... Meenauh didn't know Jack even knew Dealla, not speaking about owing anything. The familiarity the girl was speaking about Jack could provide enough sensitive context that they might've been friends, not just mere acquaintances.

But as Dealla was casually listening to what Meenauh was saying, and casually dropping one line after another, Meenauh's voice got stuck in her throat and she felt an urge to cast Anapneo to clear it.

"Dating?" she repeated after Dealla in the lowest possible whisper.

Dating. They were not just friends. They were dating. They were... lovers.

Meenauh's heart sank, and her skin turned no less pale than Jack's was. She missed the fact that Jack was not himself at times, as the weight of the words was already too much to carry.

He was with Dealla. The pretty whirlwind — Dealla Prince. Meenauh liked Dealla, could understand Jack. But... it was over. Even if she'd be with Jack in any of the universes... She now could not. Maybe she got her head too high in the clouds, imagined a bit more than she should have. Whatever it was, it was over, or had to be over any second starting from now.

She collected herself right at the moment Jack seemed to listen as he turned back into a mere human, and miserably just sat there and did nothing. He looked horrible. He looked exhausted.

But if they'd look at him cold-headed, he was a boy who stabbed his classmate into the eye. He was still dangerous.

"Dealla. We cannot contain him if he goes wild again. We can't hex him because of the dome," she said to the girl as if no other conversation had just happened. There was danger, and he was no longer her date this evening. And now... he wouldn't ever be.

"Transfiguration?" she asked, aiming her wand at the empty image of a lonely boy named Jack. It was difficult to do as she pointed her wand at someone unarmed, but still potentially explosively murderous. No other spell would work.

She wouldn't know what kind of thought would cross Dealla's mind at this very moment. But maybe each of them thought who had to cast the spell. The job has to be done for this ball to end quick.

No one could know what could've been brought to life.

"Pullus!" she proclaimed. She didn't need to aim or care about missing. Transfiguration was just something that had to happen, and there was no way to evade it. Not that Jack could do it anyway.

The smallest of frowns flitted across Dee's face, and her eyes jumped from Jack to Meenauh and back. Her and Jack's relationship status seemed like an odd thing to focus on at this moment, but she nodded anyway, the movement quick and jerky. "He's my ex," she confirmed, perhaps unnecessarily so, and entirely unaware of the effect this revelation had on her former role model slash duelling captain colleague.

Fortunately, finally, Jack reverted into a human, but he didn't look any closer to giving her the answers she wanted in this form, either. He seemed tired - more than that, weary. Exhausted. Empty. Dee started forward, the Hufflepuff's name on her lips again, but stopped herself short when Meenauh addressed her. She pressed her lips together, her hands curling into fists, the wood of her wand cutting into her palm, but she nodded, anyway. Meenauh was right. Jack was clearly in no state to give her the answers she wanted right now; it was better to keep the situation contained. Get him out of here, somewhere he couldn't hurt anyone, and where no one could hurt him, either.

The wand already in her hand, she raised it in reaction to Meenauh's question, unaware that the Gryffindor was intending to cast the spell herself. Why else would she have voiced it out loud, if she hadn't intended for Dee to cast? So in a disastrous, or perhaps simply inevitable turn of fate, she voiced her spell at the same time as Meenauh: "Porcus."

Decided to make the WDC pretty high. They are fifth year spells from one of the most difficult schools of magic.

Meenauh Silmataurea casting Pullus
WDC18
[d20 : 14] + 20
In the end, the result was: 34
Success!

Dealla Prince casting Porcus
WDC18
[d20 : 15] + 14
In the end, the result was: 29
Success!

An eerie calm settled across the pitch, although brief, it offered those who remained a small respite from the stabbings, spells, explosions and wails, as the crowd fell over itself in confusion to launch jinxes left and right. The few who stayed watched as Jack transformed back into his human form. He looked exhausted, pale, his eyes bloodshot. It was obvious that whatever ailed him was still affecting his mind. Before he could act, Meenauh and Dealla, their wands still drawn from the earlier commotion, bellowed incantations simultaneously. “Pullus!” “Porcus!” A jet of pink light shot from Meenauh’s wand and a jet of violet light from Dealla’s streamed alongside it. The two projectiles of concentrated magic lit the darkening grounds up, bathing everything in a deep purple for a split second.

Jack was disorientated, his senses already overwhelmed, he made no attempt to evade the attacks. The two jinxes struck him in unison, perfectly synced blows to the head. At the moment of impact there was a flash of light that engulfed his body, so bright that it was akin to staring at the sun with naked eyes. The display marked a rather rare occurrence of magic, in which two transfiguration spells applied their intended effects at the same time. Most of those observing had no idea what would happen. Would Jack be horribly disfigured? Splinched? Would the dominant spell caster override the other’s spell? It was worth pondering, but unbeknownst to those present there was a rogue element involved. An arthropodic parasite.

As the light faded, onlookers could see Jack was still standing, having neither turned into a chicken nor pig. His clothes were singed and smoke rose from his robes steadily. The boy had lifted a hand up to his face, perhaps to shield his eyes from the assault. He looked as though he was about to speak and then let out a sudden sharp cry of pain. Blood was trickling from his ear and down the side of his face. A long insect-like creature burst from his head, ejecting itself through the ear canal out onto the grass. Jack fell backwards, his body limply ragdolled as he lay sprawled out on the ground, out cold. Meanwhile, the strange animal that had resided within Jack’s head began to transform. The centipede was long and glistening black. Its legs writhed rhythmically and it moved with a serpent like grace. It was rapidly increasing in size, as if someone had cast the engorgement charm on it. With each passing second, the centipede's chitinous exoskeleton expanded, the once fine, almost delicate, articulations now bulging and thickening into robust armour. It had become monstrous, barely resembling the centipede it once was, the creature now bore the likeness to an amalgamation of terrifying insects. Although seeming to bare no eyes, its pincers and antenna were focussed acutely in the direction of the two girls. The parasite reared up into the air and was about to strike.

@Vladimir Athanatos, @Meenauh Silmataturea, and @Dealla Prince

"Certainly not." Although not wholly keen on the moves Athanatos may or may not have been making, Xailah was interested enough in the conversation they were sustaining to provide a little cheeky back-and-forth. "How modest you are." She couldn't resist an opportunity for good banter, even if her willingness to rebut was often misinterpreted as flirting on her part. "It's a wonder how you don't have all ladies and gentlemen on campus groveling at your feet. They are missing out, I'd say." There was no flirting here, just a nice chit-chat.

Well, nice until Vladimir brought up is friends- or rather, ex-friends. Was that an appropriate term for long dead associates?

The blond's overt (and rather surprising, admittedly) knack for charm was suddenly not enough to smother an unsettling energy that hovered over him, like a foreboding raincloud. Xailah wouldn't pick up on his lie- it was too miniscule a thing, too dismissive- but that grin he gave her made her head stall. Whatever casual regard she shared with him seconds before, came to a pause as she considered each tooth revealed underneath the peel of thin lips. It made his suggestive remark hard to acknowledge. "Oh? Hm." She'd hear it, but in the end, she was reluctant to accept what it actually meant. Not while he wore that smile.

But, it was no big bother, she'd carry on, carefully moving the conversation along with some quick inquiries. Uncanny encounters were to be expected with Vladimir, given his history. His expressed intent to join his father in ministry matters was taken as a surprise. Xailah raised a brow as she considered what his plan meant. "Straight into politics for you, then? I could never find the appeal, personally. But good luck with your endeavors, in any case." Though, she could not wish the same for his father. She cared not for that realm or many of the people directing the machine.

If the tonal shift of their discussion wasn't apparent before, then it was now. Chaos had caught the attention of many spectators, Xailah included. Her interest in it would garner an interesting reaction from her current companion- Vladimir would try to draw her away from the mounting mayhem. It may have been understandable if he only wanted to save his own skin, but why did he feel the need to drag her away from the heat too? There were plenty of willing young men and women around to sweep away, he didn't need her. Xailah would nod, distantly acknowledging him, "I do realize that, but the problem is-" she rolled her censer's chain around her wrist, "-I think we have different ideas for what a 'great evening' may entail." Another let down, this one far gentler than her last. A small tight-lipped smile would crack across her face, having found some amusement in his words; despite staring deep into dissonance's widening maw. What he said wasn't inherently funny, but it did highlight a particular nature of the metamorph that frequently reared it's head, no matter how composed she presented herself to be: she was prone to trouble.

Her inevitable involvement wasn't about making a difference, Xailah wasn't a hero.

She was a junkie. And if a high came at a minimal cost? She'd take it. She was here for the climax.

In spite of Vladimir's professed aversion to the growing pandemonium, he'd still find himself drawn closer to it. As he reached into the hole Jack had started, he'd admit to temptation. He couldn't ignore what was waiting at the bottom of the shallow ditch. Or rather, he wouldn't, even with Xailah trying to sway him. "You can." She countered, her sharpened tongue meeting his compulsion with the clang of swords. There wouldn't be a duel. Just a pitiful deflection. Vladimir let his blade fall in a crestfallen display of defeat, the moment the edge licked hers. Xailah would watch from behind as he succumbed to whatever demons had flicked their tongues in his ears, successfully willing the young man to do their bidding.

For a moment, a sentiment of sadness washed over her as she observed the bird's pallid fingers grope and scratch achingly at the loosened soil beneath him. The falling of her stomach was tied to one tragic understanding: Vladimir had not changed. He would never change. He was still that burdened and easily tempted little boy Xailah had discovered, when she first read the contents of his diary. He was a slave. A zombie in every sense- it wasn't just a joke or a rumor anymore.

There was no helping Vladimir. He was a doomed soul right from the very beginning.

And this realization would ring sharp through Xailah's head, as Vladimir freed the object of his inner turmoil from the earth; completing the task Jack had started. Xailah wouldn't even try to physically stop him, she had given her warning, and that was enough; Vladimir sealed his own fate, there was nothing she could have done in the moment to halt him. A skull was birthed from the ground- unmistakably human in sculpt- and delivered by the young Athanatos' hands. The Gryffindor was not superficially disturbed by the revelation. She had seen the dead before. She knew there were bodies on Hogwart's grounds- not this close to the castle- but she had seen the ones in the woods. She would draw concern from the Ravenclaw's reaction, however.

"You should leave." Xailah would finally whisper from over his shoulder, her breath entwining with the smoke from her censer. It wasn't a suggestion, but rather a warning. She wouldn't do anything to him, but she was very familiar with how their peers got whenever something macabre was brought to light. Vladimir would undoubtedly be attacked if he remained here. Fortunately, for him, he had the game figured out by now. Without another word he'd cast the skull aside as if it burned his hands; and hastily left the scene of his own accord. The metamorph managed to get a glimpse of his face before he departed. He had looked as if he had just seen an old ghost.

And maybe, that's exactly what that skull was.

With Vladimir gone, Xailah was left to watch the simmering remnants of the chaos that had unfolded. Warren would catch her eye- but more so the remaining people around him. She could identify Meenauh in an instant, and Dealla's dress gave away her identity just as quickly. Both had their wands raised at Jack- Jack who was no longer presenting himself as a threat. The lioness wouldn't be quick enough to prevent them from testing their spellmanship on the young man (which proved curiously ineffective), but that wouldn't stop her from trying to keep them from casting at the Hufflepuff further.

"Leave him be." Xailah barked at the girls, pushing past a few idle bystanders with a firm shoulder. Seldom did her voice raise above it's gentle speaking level; they'd know she was vexed. Her pupils were drawn into daggers as she stared down Meenauh and Dealla. "Hasn't he been through enough? Look at him." Her sharp gaze swept to the disheveled Jack; his hands dirtied with soil and grass; his face lowered in defeat. "There is no fight left in him." And it was a sad sight. Truly.

Xailah had always known Jack Warren to be a boisterous peer; loud, but good-natured. If you needed an extra fist, Jack was there, and if you needed someone to party with, you needn't look far- you could always call up Jack. Despite never sustaining a very personal relationship with him, the badger had always proven himself to be reliable and full of such wonderful, electric energy. No, she didn't know Jack as well as Dealla or Meenauh (as it was made apparent that Meenauh did in fact know him much more than Xailah thought), but she did know Jack. To witness him in this state was simply cruel. She couldn't bear to look at the husk.

"Leave him alone." She'd plead again, blind to the cacodemon snaking it's way out of Warren's skull. The badger's body hitting grass was what eventually coaxed the lioness to look his way again, but she never could have been prepared for what she'd see: an insect of some sort rapidly maturing right before her very eyes and rearing up to strike Meenauh and Dealla.

...Maybe Xailah should have taken Vladimir up on that dance after all.

Anyone with more sense would have.

She had her wand in hand at an unseen speed; an incantation leaving her lips just as fast. "Spongify!" Truthfully, while she enjoyed a good casual dance, a thrilling waltz with the reaper had always been more her pace. She knew He at the very least, could keep up with her footwork.

Did someone call for an exterminator? Casting Spongify at Frank (the bug- the bug's name is Frank). Not sure if Xailah is inside the dome or not, she was standing directly behind/next to Vladimir when it went up, so I'll leave that for you, the mod, to decide.

For the fourth time within a span of minutes, an outsider presumed to tell her how to handle the situation, and the anger that surged up within Dealla in response was almost enough to distract her from the horror of what they'd just done. Transfiguration was one of the most complex and most dangerous schools of magic. Mixing transfiguration spells would usually have results nothing short of disastrous.

So telling Xailah to mind her own fucking business and that they were trying to protect him and how did any of them think they knew how to handle Jack better than she did would have to wait for later. Instead, she started forward, towards where Jack seemed oddly untouched by two competently cast transfiguration attempts. "Jack?" There was a trace of panic in her voice, just a touch of it that slipped through, couldn't be held back. Maybe the two spells had somehow canceled out? Her eyes skimmed over him, trying to check for the effect of their spells... only to watch a black thing with way too many legs burst from his ear, increasing in size at a rapid pace as it seemed to spring towards her, and Dealla scrambled backwards, almost stumbling in her heels and unable to quite hold back the scream that rose in her throat. Was this... like Victor? Had Jack really been dead all along, and she'd never known? The thought shot spikes of fear through her body. But no, Victor had been a doll, and exploded into a thousand shards when the centipede had been exposed. This was different. What had they done?

She bit down on the scream as soon as she could, trying to regain control of both her thoughts and her body. This thing wasn't Jack, Jack was still there - she desperately tried to not think of the way he seemed way too still, that he'd just dropped, no movement or indication of life - and she had thought giant centipedes before. If not quite as big. She could focus on this, this was something she knew to do - and it would let her ignore everything else for the moment. Her reckoning would come later.

Blinking through the tears clouding her vision, Dee's first motion was to kick off her shoes. Despite having managed reasonably well so far - as in, she had gotten around without falling and breaking either her ankles or her neck - she was not going to fight this thing wearing shoes that would turn her into a liability more than an asset.

The next step was to force herself into a regular breathing rhythm, eyes focused on the monster in front of her. In and out, in and out, filling her lungs with oxygen, until the trembling of her hand ceased enough to not mess up wand movements. Transfiguration spells, Meenauh had said. "Sagitta," she cast, wand aimed at the giant beast.

Suddenly, from the dim and thick fog of her vision (and probably the dome's blurring outskirts), she saw Xailah. Not just her regular Xailah, but Xailah who was screaming at them (screaming as in the level of what Meenauh used to be her regular tone and volume). But she was just a little bit late as Meenauh's spell already started to work. As she thought.

At the last second, she heard Dealla casting a spell as well, to Meenauh's surprise. This must have been some misunderstanding.

"But I meant, I-" she started to talk to Dealla, but a sudden cry from their target disrupted her levelled tone of question, and returned her gaze back to him.

The boy cried and dropped as if the spells killed him, naturally. The coldest ever shiver went down her spine. She could feel cold towards him that fast after just dancing with him mere minutes ago. Even though she wouldn't do it again, it didn't mean she stopped caring. But neither her spell, nor Dealla's couldn't have such an effect. She was a thousand percent sure, she knew how Transfiguration worked, she could even predict how it could've gone if both of them would cast different spells at the same time. But being a prodigal didn't mean you were a god or anything — things could always go down the hill, and they usually did.

A strange creature popped out from Jack's ear and started to grow — without being transfigured into anything resembling a pig or a chicken. And Jack also did not. If Jack had that in his head, maybe a lot of things could've been explained. Later.

"What in the Merlin's name is that?" she asked Dealla, as if she knew the answer. Whatever atrocity Meenauh had acquainted at Hogwarts, she didn't see anything looking like a giant centipede that lived in people's heads.

But maybe the answers would need to wait. Not dying was a priority now, considering how close the creature was, and how hostile it looked at the girls. With a swish of her wand, she cast the first transfiguration spell that came to her mind for the situations like this.

1. Frank has hidden stats and health pool.
2. Frank is immune to charmer.
3. The anti jinx dome no longer exists, it has petered out.
4. I had to change the target areas for spongify since the centipede does not have arms or a wand.
5. For spells not in the dueling rule book, I have attempted to balance them myself.
6. The centipede is getting two attacks per round, but on this round Meenauh's impaired fire rope bound it so it only got one.

The gigantic beast had a cold indiscriminate look upon its insectoid face. The decision to strike Dealla only came from the fact that she had been the first of the two girls to flick their wand. In a fraction of a second, it had determined she was the greater threat and launched itself at a terrifying otherworldly speed.

Another jet of light bolted across the field, this time from Xailah’s wand. Her aim was true and the purple beam clobbered the centipede directly in the head. A moment later a glowing rope was spiralling through the air. Produced from Meenauh’s wand, It wrapped around the centipede’s body like an enchanted serpent. As it made contact with the chitinous armour, a great amount of hissing and sizzling filled the air as it seared itself into the creature's body. Followed by a not so pleasant smell, the centipede bucked and writhed to break free of its bindings. It lashed out its long tail at Meenauh in retaliation, but was restricted enough to miss her by inches. The ropes would not hold it for long.

Dee had always felt more in control when casting magic, and this time was no different. With the gravel of the path digging into the soles of her bare feet, the smooth wood of her wand between her fingers, the panic about Jack's still body receded for the moment - pushed to the edges of her mind rather than taking center stage. It was good to have something to focus on. "Your guess is as good as mine," she replied to Meenauh, the words tense. She could explain about Victor later, but she didn't think this was the same... was it? For now, the time for talking was over, and the time to act and react had come.

Dee's reflexes proved just a touch faster than her companions', and her glowing arrow preceded the other attacks, leading the charge of magic they sent to face the monstrosity. It struck true, with enough force to punch through carapace and pierce flesh, and yet it barely slowed the creature. At least the screech provided some satisfaction - even if it hadn't stopped the thing, at least it hurt.

But that was all the smugness she had time for, because now it was coming for her. Cursing, Dee ducked to the side, already more than grateful she had gotten rid of the shoes. With them she would soon be centipede dinner for certain. As it was, the giant pincers missed her by centimetres, close enough for her to gasp and scramble backwards to get away from it.

And then Xailah and Meenauh's magic came to her aid, weakening and binding the creature, providing her with a moment of reprieve to find her balance again, backing up a few steps and getting back into stance. Around them, the faint glow of the hex dome was fading, and Dee's fingers tightened around her wand. Did that mean she had access to her full arsenal of spells again?

Rolling her wrist, Dee backed up another step, then flicked her wand. Judging from its reaction to the fiery ropes, it wasn't any more fond of fire than other living creatures were. "Incendio Tria."

@Meenauh Silmataturea, and @Dealla Prince

There was one thing about Hogwarts students, that distinctly separated them from their peers belonging to the other wizarding schools; and that was their seemingly innate ability to think on a whim. Just as fast as a coin could flip, Hogwarts representatives could spin a situation onto it's head; be it for better or for worse (more often than not, it was frequently the latter). One moment they could be brawling- or pushing through the aftermath of a heated argument- but straighten right out at the slightest sign of impending danger.

Maybe it was that particular trait, which proved to be their real marvel; they always found camaraderie in war and battle. Trauma bonded them, whether they liked it or not. They didn't need to know, or even remotely care about each other on a personal level; every challenge they faced ensured they would share something at the end of it all- a memory, a scar, a blackened kiss placed by deaths lips.

Xailah no longer found herself feeling peeved with Meenauh and Dealla, the moment she saw the large, ebony-armored insect leveling itself with them; it's body coiling around itself like a behemoth snake beneath the magical dome, that was now beginning to crumble. The lioness could be mad at her peers later; for now, the two girls were her allies, just as she was theirs. If they were willing to work together, then she was willing to have their backs. There was no other way they would be able to take this creature down otherwise- cooperation was essential.

Meenauh's uncharacteristic bewilderment received some answers, but none she would find satisfying; Xailah's only reinforced urgency. "Whatever it is, we need to make sure it does not get inside the Quidditch stadium, or worse: escape into the forest." Forbidden Forest was implied, the place seemed to be a haven meant for nurturing abominations that were never meant to crawl among men. The deeper parts, anyway. The Gryffindor had seen the kind of life the woods hosted in it's dark womb- even sympathized and tried to reason with it, but that was before she realized it was bred to rot everything in it's path.

It didn't take long for the metamorph to slip into the role of defense: it was a glove she had been forced to don more than once, its leather now molded to the shape of her own hands. Combat was second nature to her, and this was made clear when she leapt into action. Xailah's Spongify followed Dealla's flashy Sagitta- which would have undoubtedly done a number on the lumbering centipede, had it met it's mark- landing a unanticipated headshot. The black insectoid squealed and swelled, it's formerly sharp mandibles being rendered null in the blink of an eye. Meenauh's unspoken rope of flame (which was an impressive feat, even if Xailah did not take the time to express such) would further hinder the creature. Good. The longer she could keep it bound, the better.

While a more powerful offensive spell would have likely had a greater effect on the creature, the Xailah's vast knowledge on insects had her taking more preventative measures on the battlefield. An insect's greatest asset was it's exoskeleton: reducing the effectiveness of that crucial protective layer would have detrimental results on any arthropod, hence her chosen use of Spongify. With one issue stalled, she'd work on buying her companions more time.

Drawing inspiration from Meenauh's fire rope, Xailah's next spell would quickly find it's way to her tongue. Petrificus Totalus would surely ensure that the centipede wouldn't be going anywhere, if it just so happened to break free from Meenauh's binds. Not that Xailah doubted Meenauh's focus in the slightest- but anything was possible here and now. The centipede's mere existence was proof of that.

Casting Petrificus Totalus on the centipede.

(Use your imagination I haven't been able to draw one yet- it's white although it appears to shift into darker colors when she moves between lighting, and her ensemble resembles a sphinxlike creature. While she may be recognizable through aura and stature alone, keep in mind she is masked. She is carrying a ritual censer emitting incense.)

The beast was unspeakable. She fought various beasts at balls throughout her time at Hogwarts, but damn... What will she be fighting next year — her last year...

The fact that it might have lived somewhere inside Jack was impossible to believe — and she knew magic could do a lot of things. It was not clear where it came from for sure, but their spells did something to Jack, and this looked like it was some haggy business.

But to the point: the girls were casting decent spells, trying to incapacitate the worm, or centipede, or whatever that was.

The rope that meant to hold the target and continuously hurt it didn't seem like something that would hold the beast for long, so something else was needed. Something that could not be removed with brute force, something that will spread until it destroys the whole of it. Fire was always the answer, and it seemed (if Meenauh heard Dealla right) the Ravenclaw by her side thought so too.

Meenauh targeted at the beast, looking at the ropes that tried to scorch the skin of... Scorch, right! It might suck out the whole flaming component out of the rope, but it was worth it. She switched her aim at the flaming part of the rope and cast her spell.
Action: Casting Scorching Charm (Hostis Ure) non-verbally at Frank (the centipede).
