Being expelled from Ilvermorny had not been on this years bingo card. He should perhaps not have been as surprised by it as he was. The bigger shock was losing his wand. Granted, he had yet to learn many useful spells, charms, and other tricks of magic, but the smooth piece of wood had started to feel like an extension of himself. It was tricky to explain, but being without it felt wrong. The officials had enough sense not to snap it in front of him, lucky ducks. Not that he could have done much if that was the case. Instead he was simply relieved of it, and his treasured instrument was not seen again.
When it became clear where he would continue his schooling, there was no question on the matter: He needed a new wand. Thanks to deep pockets and a few friends in the right place, one was custom ordered for him. Made to fit him the best it could. Wood, core, flexibility and length, all somehow reflected an aspect of himself.

Wand wood: WC: 138/50
Reducio
Yew is a wand wood often associated with extremes. It is drawn to individuals capable of shaping the world around them, for better or worse. Beneath the sarcasm and deliberate self-sabotage of Harvey, there lies someone with intelligence, determination, and potential. He is capable of many things, yet he spends so much of his life resisting that fact. A Yew wand would recognize what he could become.
Yew wands are frequently drawn to strong-willed owners. Harvey, although physically imposing due to his height, is not particularly brave in the traditional sense, but he possesses a stubborn refusal to bend. Whether facing authority, expectations, or his own fears, his first instinct is never surrender. When scared, he pushes back. When outmatched, he mouths off. There is defiance at the core of his character that matches a Yew wand well.

Wand Core: WC: 120/50
Reducio
The core of the wand is dragon heartstring by Romanian longhorn, and it matches him well. He is set in his ways on many matters, and stubborn as few. That does not mean he is not flexible. When trying to achieve his goal, he will stop at nothing to reach it. He will adapt to the situation in any way he can, as long as it serves his goal.

It is said that wands with a core from Romanian Longhorn are bold, as well as stubborn and temperamental. This matches Harvey to a T. Fighting his own anger on a near-daily basis, and losing it more often than not. Stubborn as few, he refuses to back down from most things.

Wand Length: WC: 113/50
Reducio
The wand was exactly 30 centimeters long. Right in the middle of typical length. It suits Harvey more than he would ever admit. Longer wands often choose lively wizards, or so the saying goes. It does not get much more lively than Harvey. A boy with a bit of a flair for the dramatics, and knows how to control a social scene. Loud, confident, and charismatic when he wishes to be.
But that is not all that Harvey is. Though extroverted, he likes his solitude and quiet moments. Time to spend refining his chosen skills and talents. He has an eye for detail, and often prefers a more refined approach to doing things.

Wand Flexibility: WC: 141/50
Reducio
The ability to adapt is said to be a good one. Unfortunately, it is not a skill Harvey has mastered. He can adjust, sure! Change his mind? Maybe. He is fluent and adjustable when casting magic. So much so that the flexibility of the wand surprised him at first. But it did not take much consideration before the choice was obvious.
When arguing about something silly, Harvey can almost easily change his mind and adapt. When it comes to his principles? He is steadfast as a boulder. A boy who has evolved into something out of necessity, something he is afraid of facing in the mirror, does not have much left to lose. His stance on not letting innocent people suffer the same fate as him, on that he will never yield. Unbending is the only fitting word to describe it.

Y1 Ability: Wandmaker
Reducio
From the moment that Akane's magic kicked in, Mr. Shimizu had started on a new wand for his daughter. The art of wandmaking had been passed down to him from his father, and to him by his father. It was no surprise; they lived in close proximity to the forest, the treetops just in sight. Though Akane was young, he already had an inking regarding what kind of witch she would become. On a broom, he flew to the top of one of the oldest cherry trees in the forest, and sawed off a neat and straight branch, ideal for wandmaking.
Cherry was one of the wood types that Akihoto rarely used. It was volatile and powerful, causing him to have reservations even when his customer was a highly esteemed and capable witch or wizard. However, when choosing the medium for Akane's wand, some force of instinct had told him that this was the right choice, creating a reaction of half fear and half pride. Even as a child, Akane seemed to not care for silliness. Natsuko, her mother, never had to tell her twice to do anything, unlike her younger sisters who fought over who could take the flying carpet out for a ride first. Even later in her life, Akane was intent on working to hone her skills to the best of her ability. She is a very determined person, perhaps to a fault of stubbornness. When facing adversity or conflict, she confronts it directly, sometimes even actively trying to force an outcome, whether positive or negative. This sometimes makes her seem heavy-handed, blunt, or unapproachable. WC: 167
The wood was currently now only a stick, but its degree of flexibility was carefully chosen by the wandmaker as well.
The branch of cherry wood was supple. It lies in the middle of the flexibility scale, but trends more stiff. Akane is stubborn, but knows to adapt to her situation and circumstance. She carries herself with poise and grace, navigating conversations and situations languidly and easily, but this does not affect her inner character of being solid as a rock. When casting spells, especially familiar ones, she is self-assured and certain, which also applies to her school work. Once she has a grasp on the material, she can usually form her own knowledge and recognition of it, leading her to excel academically. WC: 102
Akihoto whittled the wood down to its light pinkish-brown center, carving elaborate lines and flourishes on the base. It was a beautiful shell, but without the core, it would still be simply a stick. From his workshop, he selected a slender, ivory-colored feather, the perfect fit with the wand itself.
The thunderbird tail feather core seemed right to Akihoto because of Akane's fighting and competitive spirit. Him and Natsuko played a large role in their daughters' upbringings, trying to foster a mentality and ethos for achieving success, but it seemed to rub off on Kana the most. It was why she chose to become a duelist; she liked it because it allowed her to actively improve herself while competing with others, especially on a purely mental and ability-based standpoint, as she for one did not like the feeling of being in the air on a broom, where she could not really control much about her position. Despite being the eldest child and not having someone ahead of her to chase, Kana sometimes felt a sense of competition with her younger sisters too, that she would be outshined somehow. WC: 138
The main body of the wand was now finished. It had taken just a bit under a month, and all that was left was to refine the details.
Akihoto shaved down the length of the wand to 20.8 centimeters, precisely. It was medium length, leaning slightly on the short side. She doesn't lack passion or flair, but instead it is channeled in a more refined manner. She prefers to collect herself and observe the situation before acting. Her dialogue is similar, usually getting right into the topic. However, she also has a side that likes to be more relaxed, which comes out around her close friends and family. Akihoto knew this early on; whenever Kana was having fun with her sisters, she seemed like a completely different person, laughing and almost losing her usually prim and proper posture. WC: 110 Total 'obtainment' WC: 200 Total WC: 717
Y2 Ability: Perfectionist
Reducio
Akane was very much a high achiever. Her schooling at Mahoutokoro played a role in that, for sure. From the moment she learned of the tiered system of her new school, she vowed to someday reach the highest level: gold robes. Her pastel pink beginner robes almost disgusted her, and she made a point to wear anything else whenever she could, outside of classes of course. Thankfully, it had only lasted a couple of weeks, and soon Kana was sporting a glorious navy blue. She was intent on maintaining it, but more so on upgrading further to gold. Day after day passed of eagerly checking her wardrobe in the morning to see if the change had happening, and day after day passed of being met with disappointment. However, the feeling was only short lived. Rather than stalling her progress, the failure only encouraged her more (studyholic?) and Kana kept on grinding for that sweet sweet gold. Along the way, she got better and better at her classwork. She got used to the pace of the academic life, combined with rigorous dueling practices. Instead of tiring her out, she was motivated by doing everything well, which in turn pushed her to be even more perfectionistic.
Her appearance and person was also mostly put together and neat. Akane's clothes were always devoid of wrinkles and imperfections, her sentences thought through, her handwriting neat, and her face always washed. She did not like to feel messy, because it made her antsy and on edge. It could ruin her mood for the entire day, so she tries very hard to avoid the feeling. Only on certain occasions, she just doesn't have time or else she would be late to class, she will skip whatever she intended to do. She prioritizes a pristine lack of absences on her report cards over a full face of makeup.
In a way, it almost became second nature. She simply knew what to do, as if on instinct, and as if she knew nothing other than perfection. It gave her control and made her content; it was something constant, especially when there was external turmoil. When she was a child, her schoolwork was dictated by her parents, and she was constantly under the gaze of their watchful eyes. Her academic success gave her almost a medium to express herself. Like an artist and her paintbrush, Kana and her line of O's going down the paper were going places. To her, the perfection was just so pretty, it was art and it was life. Imperfect grades were not even in her vernacular, but perfectionist certainly was. WC: 436
Y3 Ability: Evasive Maneuvers
Reducio
When Akane, Inaho, and Rinka were very young, they had come up with a game. An innocent one, created from the depths of a child’s bored mind. The premise was simple. Three girls on flying carpets, and whoever fell off first was the loser and had to eat a small soy sauce dish’s worth of straight wasabi at dinner. Natsuko, though she cringed at the idea, was mildly amused and wished to see what would go down. Akihito had similar thoughts, and wanted to see how competitive his girls could get. Thus neither parent put an end to the endeavor. They peeked from inside the house as their kids got on their carpets and took to the sky, preparing to watch the chaos ensue.
It started out easy. Akane won the first few games; rather, she did not lose. She guided her carpet high above her sisters, watching them tussle around. Later, though, they caught on, either flying at her same altitude or grabbing the tassels of her carpet and trying to bring it down. That was when she had her first L in the game. She had tumbled to the ground, quite a drop from the height, and immediately realized the consequence. She pinched her nose as the green gunk went down, and tried not to puke afterwards.
Kama learnt her lesson well. She began to get a knack for evading, especially since the punishment was still fresh in her mind and her taste buds (they were screaming for help). She learned to dodge out of the way in the nick of time, sometimes getting away in situations and making maneuvers even she did not believe she could manage. Somehow it was just a sense, almost an instinctive twitch of the muscles that generated moment and got her out of her way. Her competitive spirit was very strong, so at first she did not think too much of her newfound ability. It was only when she started the sport of dueling when it had started to come in handy. When it came to evading, she was better than most, especially for her age. Though Akane was tall, she was also very agile and quick on her feet. Maybe it was also due to her gangly limbs that she was able to bend and twist around to get out of the way of incoming spells. She simply could infer where the spell was going, and automatically know how and when to move out of the way. WC: 416
Y4 Ability: Spell Spread
Reducio
Observation was often the key to mastering a skill. Due to Akane's excellent time management, she was often done with her assignments early and had time to stroll over to the Mahoutokoro dueling grounds and watch others duel. No, it was not creepy and it was not stalking, no matter what Inaho or Rinka told her. Kana would sit on the sidelines with a textbook, notebook, quill, and wand, often staying for hours. She took notes once in a while, observing tiny details about how the senior duelists utilized each spell, each dodge, and even the piste itself to their advantage. Once everyone left, she would drag out practice dummies and train her spells on her own. Dragging out the dummies may have been even the hardest part, due to her lack of arm strength.
One skill seemed to elude her, time after time. It took her about a month to even muster up the courage to attempt it, for fear of messing up so badly her robes would instantly turn white. It was the practice of splitting a spell into two. She remembered the first time she saw it. Akane had rubbed her eyes, spotching ink on her shoes on the way. Thankfully it was not her robes. She was so sure she was seeing double, and needed to get her eyes checked, just to be sure, but no. The duelist she was spectating had simply had the sheer skill to somehow wrench apart the spell mid air, and direct it towards two seperate people. Kana was sure she would go either cross eyed or develop a lazy eye trying it, and thus was even more determined to not let a single soul see her first attempts. How could one look two different directions at once, that was beyond her. She already knew that it could happen by chance sometimes, out of luck, on an exceptional cast, but that would not satisfy her.
Kana placed two dummies, around a wingspan's length apart. She walked over to the other side of the piste, and took a breath. "FLIPENDO!" she yelled, thinking that the greater force she put into it, the better the outcome would be. Instead she simply looked like a lunatic, and her spell did not split.
She was likely haunting the dueling ground for weeks on end, hours at a time- she didn't know herself, as she lost track of time. She got lost within the thrill of learning something from scratch, her embarrassment at failing almost gone. It started with a weak spark, sometimes barely splitting from the main spell, but one thing about Kana was that she would not quit, even if she had to work her ass off to make even a fraction of progress.
The first time she managed the spell spread was exhilarating. It was extreme mental pressure, but watching her spell hit both dummies at once made it all worth it. With a small proud smile at the fruits of her effort, she would keep on practicing until she had it fully consistent. WC: 511
Y5 Ability: Lovely Creature
Reducio
To anybody with eyes, it would be quite obvious that Akane was beautiful. She was the image of the perfect pureblood heiress: good posture, great manners, stellar academics... But perhaps it was not always fully that way.
Appearance had simply been a description trait for Akane, and her personality was her schoolwork. She would care for it, as one imperfection would undeniably affect the whole picture, but she had never noticed her potential before. It only happened one fateful night in her fifth year.
Akane had worked hard for the past five years- half a decade- at Mahoutokoro. She'd worked her ass off, day and night, chasing the seemingly impossible golden robes. Like a mirage in a desert, she was stumbling blindly towards an oasis that flickered in and out of sight. Not graceful at all, unlike what she'd like to be. Except, they weren't actually impossible, because she'd seen other real students with her real eyes wearing the real robes that she really wanted. She had not had a single grade under an O, ever, and she had even dabbled in leading a club, but her goal simply refused to be achieved. Kana had even turned superstitious, maybe even to an extent religious. She researched gods of intelligence and wisdom and manifested and prayed. There were gods across cultures, ones long forgotten and ones no one knew yet, but as the stupidly stubborn girl was falling asleep every night, she would think to herself: "please, please, whoever's out ther... zzzzz. zzzz." It was so stupid, and so futile, but mama did not raise a quitter. perhaps by sheer willpower, one bleak and cloudy morning, Kana ripped open the doors of her wardrobe to see beautiful, joyous, heavenly- gold. She screamed. Loud. A blood curdling noise of excitement. Perhaps her lack of professionalism was what had made them promptly turn back to navy only a week later.
She was infuriated. It was just one slip up?? Surely it was a cruel joke. But no, it was not. And so Akane felt that she was done with this. In front of a mirror, still teary eyed (though she would never admit it), she caught sight of herself. Yabai, she thought. What if I quit school and became an actress?? That was a joke, of course. She would never so something as frivolous, but it was at this moment that she realized her beauty. All the stares- she could always feel them at her back- it hadn't been because of her robe color or whatever crap about that. Robe color was but a social construct!
It was at the same time freeing and disconcerting. It was one more aspect to worry about, and she now was even more aware of the looks she sometimes got, and it made her think a lot, but at least the epiphany had gotten her to be less obsessive about her academics. WC: 485
Y6 Ability: Charmer
Reducio
Akane was pretty before, but as she grew up, it became evident that there was more to it than just looks. Entering her sixth year, she had grown a bit taller and stood at 170 centimeters, taller than most (girls, at least), and she was filling out her facial features more now, and gained a sort of confidence to her. She was self-assured before, yes, but it was more internal back then. In her younger years, she was more or less stuck in her own world of pretty O's and neat calligraphy. She invested in herself, and valued her progress more than anything else in her life, especially her social life. It explains why she has made very little friends, despite being a student at the Japanese magic school for six years. Somehow, amidst the classes and the studying, the time had slipped by and left her, in a sense, behind. And, if there was one thing Akane hated, it was being behind.
Sure, Akane was not well known socially, but she'd be damned if no body knew baout her academic prowess. Almost gleefully she imagined the look upon her classmates' faces whenever scores were announced, and it was seen that she was in the top few students.
She'd seen it in the glances people would give her sometimes. Awe, maybe, that's what Kana would have preferred it was. Maybe not admiration; despite being very self assured, she did not see herself as egotistical- alright, maybe a little. What she did not expect was that it would be her looks. Her way of holding herself while standing or even sitting was second nature, it did not strike her in any way as special, because it had been drilled into her as a child, and was more like a habit than obligation. She always had her back up straight, chin high, and walked soundlessly and gracefully. Recently, after her epiphany in fifth year, she had started to even experiment with slight makeup and some simple hairstyles; up until then, her only two choices were a low ponytail and nothing at all.
She found that she liked the attention, or rather the aspect of being known and being a distraction. It benefitted her a lot, coming close to what one would call pretty privelage. With her looks, combined with her good heritage from a respectable pureblood heritage and reputation as an academic and duelist, Akane Shimizu was a force to be reckoned with. WC: 411

Castra always felt as though people never lied to her about how they were feeling. She always seemed to have this odd little effect of people that made them feel... safe when they were with her. They always acted more relaxed, laughed real laughs, and genuinely had a good time when they hung out with her. Castra didn't know why, of course, but she was happy she had a trait, whatever it was, that made people happy, that drew people towards her. She loved nurturing and caring for others, helping them feel seen and heard. But she always did wish she knew why people were so comforted by her. Her father said she had a "gift" growing up. Now, at Ilvermorny, nothing changed. She was still just as warm, just as safe, and still just as confused. That was, until she was wondering about the library and found a book that had been left lying alone on a table titled "Calming Presence: Building a World of Zen" The title made her laugh a little, but she picked it up nonetheless, and began reading it, flipping through each of the pages. She read the textbook definition of "Calming Presence" but wasn't entirely convinced that it was her. Sure, she understood what it was and saw similarities in behavior ad how people react to her and people who have a calming presence, but it didn't really mean anything to her. The topic was still of interest to her, so she checked the book out and kept it with her to read or skim through whenever she had a little free time. She found the book to be very interesting, and as she read onward she realized that it was very similar to her "gift."
Then, one day, while at breakfast, a classmate of her got a letter. The boy's childhood cat had died, and the boy broke down immediately when he read the news of his deceased friend. Castra stood from her place and walked over, placing one hand on the boy's back and gently consoled him, and explained to him that life was a natural process, something that can't be changed. She continued to speak to him, comforting him and making sure he was alright. Castra continued reading the book she got, but whenever she did so, the boy always lingered in the back of her head. He seemed to be doing a lot better after Castra spoke to him. So... maybe she did have a Calming Presence.

As one may know from Theodore’s backstory, he was forced to start boxing as soon as he had turned five years old. He was not entirely happy with that fact, since he was still some kind of toddler, but he wasn’t born in an entirely normal family anyway. His grandfathers, having forced him to start boxing at that very age as they had done for their sons, and like it had been done for them by their fathers, did not care about how much of Theodore’s childhood was being wasted away.

Theodore’s body was, at first, lacking lots and lots of stamina. He couldn’t even get past thirty minutes of constant boxing. Sometimes even less than that. This made his grandfathers furious as they thought he was a weakling. Theodore didn’t like them thinking that about him, so he always tried to prove them wrong. That he was going to be very strong when he grew up.

As Theodore got older, his stamina and strength improved. Sometimes he was more tired than on other days, slacking and barely being able to train more than an hour, which would cause his grandfathers to get frustrated. One of the times this happened was when he was eight, and that was his first instance of magic.

He didn’t want to disappoint his grandfathers, so sometimes he trained alone for an hour or two. Sometimes his knuckles would get red and bruised, sometimes even bloody, but he’d get it disinfected after the training. After a while, though, those bruises were a part of the training, and he got used to them.

Theodore trained constantly when he was at his each of his grandfather’s place. They’d supervise him, and, although they weren’t the most careful around him with their use of words and facial expressions, and although they didn’t care about how many times he needed rest, they gave him tips on how to improve his jabs, punches, hooks, and uppercuts. Theodore didn’t deny how much he had gotten better at boxing with the help of his grandfathers.

When he had only started boxing, he didn’t like it. He had always been sceptical about following his grandfathers to the basement, where the boxing equipment was. At the ages of five and six, he used bandages around his wrists. When at the age of seven he started to like boxing more and think of it as a coping mechanism, he stopped using the bandages, which, for some reason, made his grandfathers look at him with a more proud expression for a while. Not using the bandages meant that he had fractured and sprained his wrists multiple times, but he never started to use them again. His grandfathers had also thrown his previous bandages away, with the thoughts of him not needing them anymore.

The constant injuries such as, as mentioned, sprains and fractures, made him stronger. Physically and mentally. Due to them, his stamina improved, again, and he would also continue boxing even if he felt something tear.

At the age of nine and a half, his grandfathers started to instruct him to use weights of one or two kilos. He’d pick them up and box with them in his hand. At first, it was exhausting, but after months of training with weights, he got used to the feeling of them in his hands while boxing. The thought of getting stronger was now fully etched in his mind.

Once his first instance of magic happened, he, sweaty and exhausted, was, although not showing it, overjoyed. With that happening, he could finally have something to brag about, something that’d prove his strength, and that he wasn’t a weakling.

Violette had learned how to fend for herself from a young age. Dealing with this reality had gotten a little easier once she adopted a stray cat, Bijou. Her parents never approved of this adoption. They lived a cheap lifestyle and a cat didn't fit into that category. Still Violette persisted. She earned her own money with which she bought everything Bijou needed. Furthermore, she raised Bijou all by herself.

Raising Bijou included a lot of training. Violette wanted a cat she could always depend on, and one who could fend for itself. In her free time, when she wasn't doing odd jobs for money, she trained and interected with Bijou. Violette grew up in a wizarding family, therefore, one thing the pair prepared for was dodging stray spells.

Clearly she couldn't do any magic herself, at least not yet. She couldn't ask her parents either, and she was too proud to ask the parents of one of her friends. This meant she had to come up with a different way to train. Perhaps a muggle way.

Thankfully, the young girl was blessed with a resourceful mind. After one restless night she knew it. While she wasn't a big fan of training her cardio or working out in the first place, she knew this was where she had to start looking. And suddenly it clicked. Some of her friends, mainly those with a high status, spent their free time playing this muggle game called 'tennis'. Violette had come to watch on a few occasions, but she never participated herself, always making up an excuse. Actually, she just didn't want to embarrass herself.

One thing she remembered about the 'tennis' places was that some included a machine which spit out tennis balls for people to hit with their 'racket'. Well.. what if instead of hitting the balls back, one practiced avoiding the balls altogether? This was something she had to try.

To her surprise, this actually worked. At the beginning, Bijou didn't seem to enjoy the intense game of dodging tennis balls, but the cat turned it into a fun game soon enough. Violette also joined in. Her muscles ended up aching, her body got hit multiple times, and she didn't enjoy this at all. However, the two kept up the practice. After a few months, the pair got more nimble. Violette started to get a tingling sense for when the balls were close to her, and often got out of the way just in time. Bijou was also doing well.

After all this practice, it was clear that the pair was harder to hit than the average cat, or human. Violette realised that the training paid off when she not only got better at dodging tennis balls, but also at avoiding pinecones falling from trees.

All that was left was to hope that spells behave similarly to tennis balls and pinecones.

多漂亮啊! なんてきれいなんでしょう! She's so beautiful! Che carino! People would exclaim whenever I went into an audition. Whenever I went to the first day of school. On one crazy occasion I was at a birthday party and someone I didn't know said I was really pretty. At school people often stared at me and people would say to teacher that’s I was ‘distracting.’ And I’d get told off. Me? Most times, I just smiled and a thanked the person modestly. Cause really, I thought I was average. But everywhere I went the same chorus followed me. Maybe it was, since a young age, I loved to brush and style my hair. Over the years, my hair had grown into an impressive length. And I loved to style it in braids, fancy buns, and even some fancy crown or milkmaid braids. I just thought of it as taking care of myself. Maybe it was my kpop training, smiles were always elegant, beautiful. And people always looked at me with these looks I couldn't decode. I've tried to decode them all my life with the compliments. Oh the compliments were amazing, yes, but it got excessive. People said my eyes were pretty...I would think staring at the mirror. I had large chocolate brown eyes that naturally sparkled somehow. Sometimes, I thought it was the skin. It was pale with a light tan and porcelain smooth. But I just couldn't figure it out. Over the summer between my first year at Mathou, people have said I've grown prettier. Some people call it genetics. Maybe. I don’t know. But I’ve always looked in the mirror and wondered. Why do people look at me. My sister, being my sister, says that it was because I was so ugly. And my mother and father have told her to be quiet. A lot. Maybe because I did dance, I was trained to hold myself elegantly. Elegance must have been apart of beauty. In photos people thought I had some sort of filter on. I didn’t. But I seemed to glow. People thought I was secretly a damphir , or Veela. I’m not. I’m just an average witch from the muggle world who just happens to look good! But every outfit I wore just looked great. Even huge baggy t-shirts. People said it was like magic. To be honest I just knew how to style it. People have said I could pull off any style. I still haven’t cracked the code on why people stare at me. But maybe someday, I will.

Alejandros is a kid obsessed with appearances, but only in very specific ways. His views are atypical -- slightly kooky, his half-sister might say, if she knew how he thought -- and based in two of the lenses through which he views the world. The first is as a budding painter, prone to translating colors and shapes to watercolors. It’s all in his mind’s eye, but sometimes he misses the reality of the details. The second is as an insecure metamorphmagus. Though he lacks the level of control needed to change himself how he wants to, he knows that appearance for him is inconsistent, malleable. What he looks like now is not what he will always look like. Give him a few years and he’ll be taller, stronger, with more of those classic, angular Espinosa features to bridge the lack of shared genetics.

Beauty doesn’t really belong to anyone when appearances can change, and though few change like he does, it’s still a matter of the fit of clothes, the brush of make-up, the angle and lightning and day. So many of the people he knew as a child were rich, able to invest endless time and money into looking a certain way. He’s rarely impressed by any physical appearance, is the simplest way of putting it. He’s sometimes envious, sometimes inspired. He carefully saves the details for a better future version of himself or for his art.

And then there’s this persistent voice in his head with the cadence of his father that can always find something to critique: something out of place, something insufficient. It’s usually saved for himself, when he lingers too long in the reflection of a mirror, but it’s worse when it crops up for someone else. He doesn’t want to be mean, even in his own head. His father's obsession is with presentation -- professionalism, intimidation -- while Ros tries to see others as the raw components of art, as things not bound by the same pursuit of perfection. Things that just are.

The physical doesn’t deserve to be given much weight as a judgement (though he's a hypocrite when it comes to himself). Instead, Ros has placed his trust in the minds and souls of the people around him. His mamá is patient and thoughtful; his half-sister is bold and fun. These things can change, too, but they’ve always felt more worthy of love. He’ll be dazzled by a stranger only for a second, remember the feature but not necessarily who it belonged to, maybe even try to wear the shape of a nose or the texture of hair for an hour. He’ll spend so much longer thinking of how to change himself.

It was the summer before sixth year, and like a lot of sixteen year olds, Astrid was being questioned and questioning herself about what she would do when she grew up. And Astrid, well, she likes Quidditch, she likes nature, she likes music, she likes magic. Quidditch was something she some times considered going pro in. But her parents always told her to find a backup idea, in case it didn’t work out. Which, faire, doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt to hear every time. So, if Quidditch was plan A, what was plan B?
During the year she had talked with students she knew had parents who worked in interesting fields. Like Greta, her mother was a wandmaker, and that was interesting. Creating the object most wizards use to make magic. That was so cool. So, they talked, and it was decided that Astrid would be spending a couple weeks with Astrid Fransson, to learn more about what it was to be a wandmaker, and maybe even make her own wand. Which was so cool. And there she was, standing in front of the Fransson house, her back on her back. She had packed only the essentials: clothes, a notebook with some pencils, her portable cassette reader Viktoria had bought her, and cassettes from this band called Twenty One Pilots Hans had told her about.
Two weeks of learning about wood types, cores, how they acted on their own, and what wood-core associations were common or uncommon. Two weeks of discovering how to work with the different materials to make a good wand. Two weeks of living with the Franssons, talking about school, plans for the future, how Greta would be taking over the family business, how Astrid (junior) was thinking of playing Quidditch pro, of course, but also following her mother’s footsteps into herbology. Though since she really loved her wandmaking internship, she might consider this as well.
It was now time for Astrid to make her own wand, under Mrs Fransson’s supervision. They had settled on pear wood. Her plan to maybe go into herbology was definitely a deciding factor, since this wood is good with plants and especially magical ones. She might be the little sibling, but it didn’t make her a selfish annoying girl. She liked to help others, and make herself useful when it was needed. And like, it wasn’t her goal in life to turn into a Dark witch. (71/50)
Then, dittany stalk. This one was more personal. The stalk came from the dittany plant in her mother’s garden, which’s smell was a constant in Astrid’s childhood. It might not have been as spectacular as dragon, phoenix or even thestral, but it was a part of her. And sure, she was proud and gloated whenever, but she knew when to be humble. (62/50)
The wand ended up being rather long, 31,6 cm. Life is stupid without flair and dramatics according to Astrid. She knows when to be serious and when she can have fun, and there’s no fun if she’s not at least a little over the top. Her personality gave her the nickname “Sunshine” by her parents, even more when she was younger. (61/50)
And it was very flexible, which made sense for her. She could admit when she was wrong, but only if you had proof that she was wrong. If she knows for sure that she if right, you’re not making her change her mind. Astrid would call herself pretty open-minded, she is always ready to hear about new ideas or concepts even if they challenge what she knows and believes. She is also ready to double check new ideas or concepts that seem a little smoky or unlikely. (87/50)
So there she had it. Her new wand. After her two weeks with the Franssons, she hugged them all goodbye, and thanked Mrs Fransson for the experience and the mentorship.

Peter knew as a beater, he needed to get stronger and learn how to handle the bludger better. Even though he had defended Interschool’s seeker twice in last summer’s Quidditch match, he still needed to remain in shape. His mother helped with that.

Iris Smith bought a set of dumbbells when he came home from a successful third year at Beauxbâtons. She also helped him with some workouts — stating that she was out of shape herself and needed some muscle. Peter suspected that his mum didn’t think he could finish it, which, for the record, he very well could.

“Sweetie. Straight back, remember?”

Okay, so, I get it. Peter remembered this one particular session—though he would definitely would rather block it out— when his mum fluttered around him, her seasoned hands ready to help with the heavy weight. She was so short that Peter hardly believed that his mother ever lifted weights, at all, in her life. “Yes, mère¹, I remember.” He lifted a fifteen-kilo weight, easily, those his knuckles grew white with the effort. “I’ve got it, thanks.” Obviously he could lift a ton more than that, but his mother asked demanded him to start slow. He could probably do a couple rounds before he got even the slightest bit tired.

He continued with the fifteens and then a few rounds later he went and fetched the twenties for himself. Peter knew he could ask his mother to pass it to him, but his mum had made him angry too many times in the past few years. He also knew he was being a sniveling brat and being selfish, although he still wasn’t sure he trusted her. Peter continued lifting weights long after his mother left the house for some errands.

Those sessions helped Peter grow stronger and some of those workouts his mother showed him were actually working. The Welsh boy made a mental note to thank his hard-working mum one day. One day.

Despite being tall, Peter was a bean pole. He wasn’t skinny but he wasn’t quite fit. He still needed to eat nutritional food. Comfort food wasn’t going to cut it and his parents pitched in when he explained about his goal for the summer. He definitely didn’t know where he got his strength. Peter’s father played Quidditch as a child, so he would think he got Brayden’s physical genes but his dad was definitely strong. He just hoped he’d be as strong as his dad, soon.

One cool summer morning, Peter rounded up his father, Brayden, and sister, Marietta, for a fun Quidditch match with Iris watching from the steps. Slamming a beach ball with a plastic bat into his father’s abdomen (Brayden was fine after); he noticed his aim had gotten sharper and stronger.

Despite his father’s ridiculous acting, Peter was pretty sure he had it top-notch. The Muggle toys that they’ve had forever worked and the fourteen-year-old was sure Beauxbâtons had it for the next Quidditch matches.

“Hit me, Peter, hit me!” Marietta star-jumped in the air and excitedly pointed at the discarded beach ball from earlier. Peter laughed, and shook his head. There was absolutely no way he was going to hit her with a beach ball even if she asked. The two were so close, despite one being at a boarding school for half the year; he didn’t want to risk that friendship with a sore rib.

Looking back at the summer, Peter just hoped he was strong enough for those black bludgers. At least he would be armed with his trusty bat.

Name of Ability that you Are Applying for: The Muggle Condition - third year ability
Describe why this fits your character (not why you the player want it):
Reducio
Peter Smith was born a half-blood, his father a pure-blood and his mother a Muggle. He grew up, learning things about the Muggle world and magic world. He was practically obsessed about this and that about Muggle culture but would also badger his father about his pure-blooded grandparents and their lineage.

Being a half-blood and Welsh, Peter sometimes felt left out at Beauxbâtons, not always knowing a lot in wizard history. While he knew a ton from his father, he was not always surrounded by the history of his pure-blood ancestors. The Smith part of his family were the only magical people in his life, not including his past neighbors when he lived in Ferndale. Peter also knew extra tips on Muggle games and items for he lived with those kind of sports and board games. It was all that simple.

Board games and sports were fun. They helped keep Peter’s mind and body sharp. In his third year, he would wonder if he should play football with his friends to keep his physique up. During that summer, he played multiple games with his younger sister, hearing all her complaints about how dirty the grass was, how hot it was, how many times her hair got caught in her pearly white teeth because the breeze was too swift. Peter lived with those wild and little girl groan sessions.

The food was a different story. His mother always made his family’s day to day food, and the boy loved watching his mum make noodles or something on the stove (having a stove and other Muggle items aided the household). While his food was magically made at his school in France, he liked coming home in the summers, and making his own lunch by himself every once in a while.

Also having a little sister helped. While he mostly knew about wizards and magic, Peter wasn’t surrounded by magic all the time. His father didn’t like to use his wand all that much when Marietta was young, and Peter wasn’t always graced by it where his friends Brookline and Winnie lived in it every day before their respective boarding schools. Peter would rather read a novel written by a Muggle author compared to a wizard’s writing. Perhaps his taste of books and movies were curated by his mére¹, though. He always did like his movies.

Despite listening to all his father’s stories about his wand and magic, Peter liked using his body and hands more for helping him. He liked feeling his Beater bat in his worn hands, much more than his small, slender wand. While magic had its glorious perks, the half-blood definitely thanked his lucky stars for his Muggle heritage.

Name of Ability that you Are Applying for: Lovely Creature
Describe why this fits your character (not why you the player want it):

Beauty was a trait that many people would kill themselves to gain and perfect. It is the life purpose and goal of millions around the globe, a lifelong pursuit that often leads to ruin and defeat as time reaps its payment in age. Facial altercation procedures, glamour spells, whitening serums– those are just a few of countless things that people in society are willing to do for a chance at becoming beautiful. However, not everyone needed to make those leaps and bounds, not if they were Lyudmila Ostrovskaya.

Lyudmila was objectively a beautiful girl. It is undeniable. As the first and sole daughter of a gorgeous half-veela mother and one of Koldovstoretz’s self-proclaimed heart-throbs, her physical appearance had never been a point of concern for her. Her appearance was that of a princess from fairytales: Wavy, full cedar brown hair, an elegant and straight nose, bright hazel-brown eyes, rosy-pink lips– To put it humbly, she was simply born beautiful. By societal standards, she had won the genetic lottery and would be forever a benefactor of her “pretty privilege”. With a pretty smile and a wave, brooms would crash, knees would bend, and opportunities would be presented to her on a golden platter. By society’s standards, Lyudmila was not entitled to be insecure. She had everything, and thus could be discontent about nothing. Lyudmila was not insecure in the traditional sense. Every action was charged with determination and without even a hint of fear, and her face exuded every emotion with a sparkling authenticity. Or, she wouldn’t be insecure at all, had her heart not yearned for companionship.

Lyudmila had never been a popular kid, much to the confusion of her family. She was the sun in every room, with a bright smile and loud contagious laugh. Yet, one thing ruined it all– her bloodline. One little, uncontrolled variable, and her beauty became the greatest eyesore, and her laugh the nastiest sound. How could someone be so loud and spirited when nobody even liked them? People of dirty blood should just shut their mouths and lower their head, was the mindset of her peers. Thus, the Sun became everyone's target practice. See, most children could be described with one word: mean. When they like you, you'll be their ride-or-die, best friends for life with matching toys and accessories to seal the deal. When they don't? They rub ruthless, blunt, and petty actions straight into your crying face, and leave you wishing that you had stayed home and wore a different shirt. Shoves in the lunch queue disguised as accidents, exaggerated imitations of her laugh whenever she tried to make jokes; it made sure that the girl knew that no matter how pretty she was, or how lovely her smile, nothing could change fate. The destined villain of her community, whose fate shall live and die with her.

Through all that, just like the Sun, Lyudmila kept shining her beautiful smile, undeterred and undefeated. However, deep in her heart, her light dimmed ever so slightly with each passing comment and mockery. How could it not? In the end, she was also a child who wanted friends and love beyond her home. Such was the nature of a child like her, who viewed the world as her garden.

At age 11, Lyudmila Ostrovskaya reached a breaking point. Lured into an abandoned gardener's shed, finally thinking that she would be accepted, only to fall victim to one of the worst illnesses of her life. For nearly half a year, spattergroit marred her flawless skin, the sickness stripping her of joyful laughter. On her sickbed in delirious fever, with not a single card or letter from the children who had put her there, the girl wondered if validation and popularity was even worth an ounce of this pain.

Upon recovery, Lyudmila changed. In body, lingering scars from her illness sealed into white specks that dotted her skin as if the galaxy had kissed her and left its stars in its wake. In mind, gone was the shroud cast over her heart, freeing her brilliant light and leaving no room for bitterness. Before, she had been beautiful. Now, draped in confidence and newfound comfort in her skin, Lyudmila became the Sun and Moon of every sky– breathtaking, irresistible.
