As is what seemed to be the current norm for Avangaline's life right now, more truely outrageous things began happening around her, the singing hat for example. At the very least a handfull of the many other first years seemed confused as well, so she was not exactly alone in her thoughts.

As student after student was sorted, she slowly found herself filled with terror, the hat would read her thoughts? That was the last place a magic talking hat should begin rummaging about in her opinion!

At last it came to her turn, the hall falling silent. She saw the calculating gaze of the Ravenclaw students, the proud awaiting grins of the Gryfindor students, she swore she saw the Slytherin students scowling, as if they could smell her muggle heritage. Finally there were the Hufflepuff students, somehow they seemed the most sincere, soft smiles from older students who had been exactly where she was now.

Scrambling onto the slightly too tall stool, Avangaline held her breath as The Sorting Hat was placed atop her head.

" Ahh, Avangaline is it? I see you have been through much, but yet you find reasons to smile? You seem to be of the unbiased sort, yes? What do you think of our school thusfar? "

Avangaline traied not to throw the hat off her, frankly it was difficult to adjust to a talking hat, especially when only a few days ago she thought that magic was a joke to get her hopes up. " Ahh, g-good? Interesting to say the least. "

" Ha, Don't worry, you get used to things around here. All things considered it's not a difficult choice, a girl who wears her heart on her sleeve and would never abandon a freind belings in HUFFLEPUFF "

Avangaline looked around, easily finding the cheering of the Hufflepuff table, suddenly finding herself sitting among them waiting almost as eager to see the next be sorted. All things considered, Avangaline thought she was going to like it here.

Lilith nervously picked at the seams at the end of her robes. She was going to be one of the last kids and all she could do was watch as first year after first year went up and got sorted into their house. Eventually, Lilith heard her own name called.

Her eyes flickered nervously to the crowd of watching students but instantly looked back at the hat. She took in a quick breath. It was silly to be nervous. It wasn't as if Lilith didn't belong here, but it was as if all the excitement in her stomach had turned into clawing anxiety as her footsteps seemed heavy.

The stool was hard and uncomfortable as Lilith sat upon it. The hat fell over her head and the brim covered her eyes, causing Lilith to pick it back up to face the crowd.

Suddenly, a whisper began in her ear that only she could hear, "Hmm, I knew your mother. She did very well in Ravenclaw. But alas, I do not believe that is where you belong. Oh so ambitious . . . hmm. Something else something else . . ."

Lilith gritted her teeth.

"It outta be . . . GRYFFINDOR!"

Lilith's legs felt like they were going to give out from under her as she got up from her stool and made her way towards the screaming red and gold table.

Ivy whimpered as the first years were ushered into the great hall. There were too many people, and she didn't bring her doll because she thought it would've made her look like a fool. She hoped that her sorting would be fast, and she could quickly melt into the shadows, maybe find another shy person to hang out with.
She stood in the back, terrified. She tried to hum a soft tune to calm her heart, but the people overwhelmed her and she couldn't make a noise. She just wanted to curl up in a ball and sink into the floor, but of course, she couldn't do that.
She adjusted her cap for the thousandth time, so worried that it would fall off and everyone would see her bald head. Her mum had told her that she needn't worry about her appearance, as she just needed to focus on her studies, but she couldn't just not care. People would laugh at her. They'd make mean comments. She couldn't handle that.
As she was lost in her thoughts, she had missed the first three times her name had been called.
"Ivy Idzikowski!"
Her head snapped up, and she rushed through the crowd. As she made it to the front, she tripped and barely caught herself.
She adjusted her cap again, so worried that people would laugh at her. But that didn't matter. People must be making fun of her already. Maybe they'd call her airhead. Or bimbo.
With nicknames racing through her head, she trudged up the stairs to the stool. She sat down, as the scary looking professor placed the hat on her head. She already felt silly, wearing two hats.
"Ah. A timid one. You're always a bit difficult. Where oh where should you go...."
Hufflepuff, oh please Huffplepuff. They'll be nice to me there... She thought desperately. She had to be in Hufflepuff. They're the only ones who had been nice to her so far, and she had seen a particularly nice sixth year Hufflepuff help up a first year when they had fallen. She had to be in Hufflepuff. She just had to.
"You want Hufflepuff, so you say... because they'd be nice to you? Tsk, that's not the best reason. I wonder which house would do you good... not Hufflepuff, I'm sure."
This was not good. This was not good. Not only was the sorting taking forever, and the hat was talking out loud, she wasn't going to get to be in Hufflepuff!
Please put me in Hufflepuff, ple-
"RAVENCLAW!" the hat cut her off. "You'll thank me later." the hat murmured, so quiet only she could hear it. Scattered applause could be heard at the Ravenclaw table.
This was awful. She hated Hogwarts already. She wasn't smart, studious, hardworking like the Ravenclaws were. She was a ditzy sick girl in the wrong house. She couldn't get to the top of her class.
She slumped down at the edge of the table, wanting to cry.
Worst. Day. Ever.

Love and kisses, Ivy.

And the day was here.

Katherine Ainsworth was a quiet child, and she had been that way ever since she could remember - regardless of her parents' claims of sleepless nights and great lungs.

Still, if there's something that she could say with as much certainty as the former, is that she disliked change.

When things changed the outcome was unknown, Katherine hated not knowing.

That day, in the early morning, she ate breakfast with her parents. It would be a long time since she would see them again -not until the holidays- and she decided to enjoy the few moments left with them.

The house elves were teary eyed, all of them saying some variation of "We'll miss the young mistress" or something similar, the reality was that, even when they were being paid -a paid which was more a symbolism than anything else, because no matter what the Granger woman thought the elves didn't like change as well, and wasn't that a funny thing- they still lived in the manor 24/7, and were probably more worried about its maintenance than their own holidays or non-existent free time.

The trio arrived at the train station early, -after leaving behind an army of crying house elves- to avoid having to rush after the train, and because the adults knew what going to Hogwarts was like, they also knew the early bird got the empty compartment.

Katherine said her goodbyes -this time with a noticeable lack of tears, to her immense relief- and boarded the train, ready to wait for its departure.

Nothing remarkable happened during the travel, and if it did, she was none the wiser, having slept all the way to Hogwarts.

However, the rumours about a giant squid, while interesting, made her extra careful of falling off the boat, and that was remarkable enough for Katherine.

But whatever she had been thinking -maybe still about the giant squid, or about how her parents would deal with the crying elves- left her mind upon entering Hogwarts.

The great hall was beautiful, and the enchanted ceiling a cute detail, -not that she would admit it to anyone, she had a reputation to maintain, however imaginary it was- but the hundreds and hundreds of students inside, transformed it all into an intimidating experience, and those nerves she had been fighting before boarding the train came back renewed.

She had to walk in front of all these people, to the little stool in the center of the room and wear a little funny hat, with everyone watching her every move, she just asked to Merlin that she avoided tripping and falling to the floor, with her luck who knew and it could happen.

Fortunately, Ainsworth wasn't really down on the list  -just after Z and all the letters right?- and she didn't have too much time to think about tripping and falling and making a fool of herself in front of this strangers.

'Walk, walk, walk' The girl repeated in her mind, and somehow, it kept her grounded.

And the next thing she knew, the hat was in her head, and she couldn't even see anything because it wasn't so little after all.

'I can't say I've been called that before'

If the great hall and its occupants didn't make acquaintance with the great lungs Katherine's mother liked to talk so much about, it was only because she had been warned in advance.

Otherwise St. Mungo may have had to deal with a few broken eardrums and the Ministry of Magic's Magical Creatures Department would have been called when someone mistook her for a crazy banshee... maybe her mother was onto something, it was still too early to concede defeat.

'My my, what a great imagination you have in there, you should consider going into journalism, I'm sure Miss Skeeter would be delighted with your talents'

The hat said inside her mind, talking once again, since it seemed she forgot about him -or was him an it? How should one refer to the magic hat of the magical school in the magical society. Did she mention magic? Because-

'There you go again, I would be worried about your short attention span if I were you'

'Okay, that was uncalled for, how great is it that you're not me and I'm not you? and now that we cleared that, something else to add, not so little hat?'

'You have spirit like a Gryffindor, the hunger for knowledge of a Ravenclaw and the consideration of a Hufflepuff, but-'

'I thought you were supposed to sort me, not to have a mid-sorting-crisis. You are aware I can't be multihoused right?'

'But, you don't like the Gryffindor nonsense and you dislike even more the happy-go-lucky attitude... not enough consideration for Hufflepuff and too scheming for a Ravenclaw...'

"BETTER BE... SLYTHERIN!!!"

And the day was here...

The day my Hogwarts experience started.

Ivy sat near the entrance to the Great Hall. She twiddled her thumbs and brushed her bangs in front of her eyes so that no one could see her. She lifted her eyes and watched as her future classmates were sorted into their houses. Since her last named started with an a, she knew she was going to be up there soon.

"Arnette, Ivy"

Ivy stood up and slowly made her way to the Sorting Hat. She sat down on the stool and gulped as they placed the hat on her head. She looked up for just a second and saw everyone staring at her with their beady little eyes. She immediately looked down again, instantly regretting the decision.

"A shy one, no doubt. Daughter of a baker and a writer huh? That's an odd love choice. You're kind and caring, have a love for animals, and will give up your dreams to protect your loved ones. Well, I think it's obvious. HUFFLEPUFF!"

Ivy sighed with relief. She was hoping to be in Hufflepuff since she didn't think of herself to be worthy of any other houses. She stood up and made her way to the table where Hufflepuff sits. She sat down and crossed her legs, hoping that no one would try and talk to her.

Going up the stairs towards the Great Hall Constance's heart was beating really fast, it felt as though her heart was going to jump out of her chest. It was all because of excitement, she honestly wasn't nervous. After all, she had been looking forward to this moment her entire life. All the stories she had heard about the school and all the amazing things you got to learn, it all began this very moment. This very moment she felt more alive than ever before.

As the doors to the Great Hall swang open and all eyes turned towards Constance and her group of fellow first years, she felt as though she was going to faint. She looked up to see that the roof consisted of a nightsky, but she already knew that it was just a spell. She had actually read the History of Hogwarts during summer, or atlest she had tried to read it but she tended to fall asleep after a few pages. But she could never have imagined that it was going to be this beautiful, this magnificent.

As the First years started to gather around the Sorting Hat her heart started to race again. Her whole family, except for her muggle mother, had ended up in Hufflepuff and Constance expected to do the same. Not that it would be a catastrophe if she was sorted into another House, she was just excited to be here. She didn't give it a second thought as the Sorting Hat started calling names.

"Constance Caelo." the Hat called.

Constance smiled as she went up to sit on the stool. The Hat was placed on top of her head and she was suprised to find out that it was so light she couldn't feel it's weight. But it was way to big for her head and she knew that if she moved a muscle the hat would fall down over her eyes, therefore she sat as still as she possibly could.

"Caelo, Caelo, there are alot of you, am I not right? the Hat chuckled in her ear.

"Well, yeah. I guess so." Constance replied through thought. "But why does that matter, aren't you going.."

"You're just as talkative as the rest of your family. Can't be quiet for more than a couple seconds at a time, am I not right again? You have a brave heart, but there is a thin line between bravery and thoughtlessness, don't you ever forget that."

Constance wasn't sure wether she was supposed to take that as a compliment or an insult, but she chose to go with the first. As the Hat mentioned bravery and not her kindness she got a feeling where it was going.

"There is one House that'll help you along the way, and only one House that can handle this foolishly brave heart... Gryffindor!" the Hat shouted and the Gryffindor Table burt out into an applause.

Constance jumped off the stool after the hat was taken off her and she smiled happily. It hadn't turned out the way she had expected it to but she had always liked surprises.

"I'm finally here" Hengist thought. As he was waiting with the other first years to be lead to the Sorting Ceremony, he could think of nothing but all the knowledge waiting for him to find in the ancient castle. Hengist wasn't too concerned about the sorting, for he already had a very good idea of which house he would be sorted into, having read every book and parchment he could find about Hogwarts. Houses didn't concern him. The only thing that Hengist wanted was to read and learn.

Finally, the doors to the Great Hall opened and they were let in. Hengist noticed the four VERY long tables, full of students staring at them. He shirked a little bit. Being from a small town and not very good at making friends, this many people was a bit overwhelming for him. He obviously knew how many students attended Hogwarts from his reading, but seeing this many people in one place was something he wasn't used to.

"I'm not sure if I can adjust to this..." Hengist mumbled. He wasn't sure if his fellow first years heard him say this, nor did he really care.

Finally, the group got to the front of the tables where the teachers sat. In front of them was placed a wooden stool, on it sat an old pointed hat. Hengist was quite curious, his previous uneasiness disappeared for the curiosity. The one thing he couldn't figure out in all his reading was how the sorting ceremony worked. The hat then came to life, some stitching becoming it's eyes and mouth. The hat then sang a song. Hengist was taken aback for this was a very peculiar song. Once the hat was done with it's song, students were called by name one by one, the hat placed on their heads and the hat called out a house name.

Finally, it was Hengist's turn. At this point, he was just impatient again, wanting to get it over with so he can start his year. He sat on the stool, the hat placed on his head and he heard the hat's voice in his mind.

"Well well, an interesting one. Your brother passed through here some years ago, but you seem quite different. I see many qualities here in your head, but where to put you? I see much ambition, but that doesn't seem to be the end of it. A thirst. Yes, a great thirst for knowledge. I think I have the perfect place for you....RAVENCLAW!"

Hengist got up, not surprised with the placement, but mainly just relieved to have all of those eye off of him. He went and sat at the Ravenclaw table, welcomed by his new housemates. He quietly thanked them and retreated into his thoughts, extremely excited and anxious for the year to come.

As Brandon walked into the hall he wondered what to expect.
"Ravenclaw? Or maybe Gryffindor??"
He thought. His fellow peers, and what hoped to be soon-to-be-friends, all looked nervous. But there was a few that had their chin high and looked like they had been waiting for this moment all their lives. He stared at the ugly hat and thought, "I might not even get chosen... Maybe this is all a big prank. I see this, and go straight home... the hat will just sit there and never say a word..." Without realizing it the sorting had already started. His name was called. He went up and sat in the stool. The hat went and just sat there. He waited and waited. Nothing happened. It was true. It was all a prank. Then a voice ignited in his head.
"All right let's see here..."
The rumors were right! While on the Hogwarts Express he had sat in a empty carriage by himself. He heard someone walk by and say,
"You know, I heard that the hat can talk but no one can hear it! It's like, inside your head!"
Of course he had thought this was completely insane, but he forgot he was in a world of magic now...
"Allrighty, your smart, kind, brave, but would never tolerate something like cheating so a friend can pass...hmmmm.... very keen to learn... magic new to you...Ah, I think I know!" The voice disappeared and Brandon was now excited and ready to hear his house...
"RAVENCLAW!" The hat was taken from his head and he saw a beaming table of cheers and applause. This is my new family he thought as he scanned the faces of Ravenclaw. He had no idea...

All Tina could think about was being stuck in a house for the rest of Hogwarts years. What if she wanted to be in all of them? What if she was as Hufflepuff as she was Slytherin?

"Tina Addington!" She heard a voice call out . Why did her last name have to start with an A? Of course she was going to be one of the first to be called. With no rush to face the inevitable, she walks very slowly. It took her five minutes to get up and sit in the chair.

Once the sorting hat was placed on her head, the hat said, "You have the bravery of a Gryffindor, but it only shows when those who are loyal to you are threatened." This surprised her. She never considered getting into Gryffindor. The hat continued, "But I feel a stronger presence of ambition. The one a Slytherin possess. You want to be everything and do everything, but your not willing to make the biggest sacrifice to get there." Now the hat's making sense, she thought.

"Wait! I see you work very hard and are kind to people. Perhaps Hufflepuff is where you belong. Or maybe something entirely different from all these houses. You are intelligent and are constantly seeking knowledge," the hat says before asking. "What was your main reason for attending Hogwarts?"

"To learn more. I always had a constant thirst for knowledge." She answered honestly. For a second she felt a moment of clarity before returning to her state of opposition against the system. "I still don't believe I can be labeled as one thing. Whatever house you put me in, I will not let it define me, but I'll embrace it and share my knowledge and skills with the members of that house."

"Then your house will be... RAVENCLAW!"

The journey to Hogwarts was probably one of the most curious ever happened in his life. Not a bad kind of curious but an exciting kind of curious. All started with the Diagon Alley where he bought his school supplies -- he was particularly excited when he got his wand even though it took him three trials to finally got one -- then to the King's Cross Station -- which really shocked him because he had visited the place at least once a month and never thought there would be a secret door which lead to the Hogwarts Express. On his journey on the train, he learned there were four houses at Hogwarts, each with its own traits, but rather than thinking about where he would be sorted, he was thinking about his late mother.

What house were you placed into, Mum?

He was watching as the Sorting Hat began the ceremony. One by one, the students' names were called and they would sit on an old stool with a hat placed on their head. It was different to each person. Sometimes it would take longer time for the Hat to announce the house, sometimes it only took seconds. Lars wondered, what would be his case later? He also watched the students reaction -- which made him nervous because some of them looked displeased with the Hat's decisions.

What if I were put in a wrong house?

He had listened to the Hat's song and learned the houses' traits, again, and thought he wouldn't mind any houses. But, still, his stomach turned when his name was called.

"Anderson, Lars."

Lars gulped but noticed his mouth was dry so he practically gulped nothing. He sat at the stool and watched the other students as they were staring at him.

"Hmm not exactly a total stranger.."

Wait, does it know Mum?

"Ahh I see the desire for friendship and strong loyalty for the chosen ones, just like your mother."

Lars was distracted as the Hat mentioned his mother.

Place me at the same house at her.

"Same house, eh? No. Let me see.. I see you're a brave one, willing to throw yourself for danger if it was to protect someone you care about. But, hmm, I sense a strong ambition to prove yourself worthy using any possible means, coupled with a clever mind. Interesting. Very interesting. But, no, Hufflepuff won't be the best choice if you wanted to attain your goal."

So, my Mum was in Hufflepuff?

Lars waited, his fingers tapping on his laps from nervousness.

"SLYTHERIN!"

He held his breath, a bit upset to go to the different house as his mother but the round of applause from Slytherin table turned his flat expression into a smile.

It's okay Lars. You're in the same school as Mum. It's more than enough already.

Lars jumped down the stool and went straight to the Slytherin table, beaming at the students there, believing he would do great there. He would prove to his father he could grow to be a great man, or wizard, for that matter. It was a must.
