The banquet continued its lively splendor, seeing people come in and out. Even the fashionably late were still welcomed to join the festivities. The night was no longer young and some would consider it wise to go back to the common rooms or the cabins for the international students. The only entertainment of the night, also known as the "fireworks", had been an interesting lightshow but no more would follow after the two red sparks.

There was not as much food on the table as the start of the night, naturally as people came to eat throughout the night, but there were still plenty of small bites to go around for those who wanted to nibble on a midnight snack. Maybe the chaos was contained only at the lake but none of the food and drinks were spiked. So, Lily's brownie and everyone else's food and drink were safe. No strings attached.

The waters of the Great Lake began to still; all the commotion that occurred there before disappeared. Did it really happen? The lanterns that were released into the sky had long disappeared into the starry void and no more would come to join them. At least, not in large groups.

EmmaLee giggled at the clash of cultures. Then, something went off in her brain like a light bulb and she laughed a little harder at the realization. "Oh! Like Looney Tunes!" She exclaimed, remembering some of the cartoons she had watched with her friends in New York. "I get it now. I thought they were all just really angry, but that makes more sense." She mused as she laughed at herself.

As the conversation moved on, said French girl finished her stew as Stephen reassured her about Bailey and Hanako. It was nice to know that at least she didn't seem to be missing anything about the older boy. She smiled thoughtfully down into her bowl as she realized that something she really appreciated about Stephen is that he never made her feel foolish or disregarded in any way, no matter what silly things tended to fall out of her mouth. While he clearly shared her own thought that other people's troubles were better worried about on a different occasion, he still took the moment to genuinely set her mind at ease.

Her mind wandered off a bit too far from the present moment as she considered him. He really was like no boy, no person, really, that she had ever met before, and she continued to find more and more reasons to enjoy him.

EmmaLee came back from her reverie just as Stephen mentioned the library and switched course towards the stunning lanterns, taking her bowl and leading her towards the lake. She had only a moment to consider what the first most beautiful thing he would see this evening could be - maybe the moon? It was quite lovely tonight - before he had taken her empty bowl from her distracted hands and swept her off towards the shore.

She smiled as she saw the beautiful lanterns rise over the lake and the turned to see the lights reflected in Stephen's ever bright, excited eyes. The thought came upon her very suddenly that she would probably follow him to the moon itself if he asked and she blushed in confusion as the majority of the lights faded and the night became older.

@Della Barfield and @Atlas Anderson

She missed this. A year, maybe three ago, Xailah never would have thought she would be cherishing these chaotic events; and yet, here she stood beneath twinkling lights and wicker tree branches, perfectly content with where she was. She missed the marvel, and the whimsical feeling these gatherings permitted. She missed the lights. The dancers. The happy faces of all the warm little souls around her. Yes, bad things happened- they were bound to. But that was no reason not to savor the natural magic of the space while it lasted. One would be a fool not to.

It was laughable to her now, but she couldn't believe she spent years dreading the official ball announcements- carefully prepping and conspiring in advance, for when things inevitably went awry- so much time wasted, time she should have used to just... enjoy everything. Time she could have used to breathe, and feel, and consume the blooming energy of the world on these bustling nights. But that was then, and this was now. She would not waste these precious moments of the present, to ponder the fleeting fractals of a distant past.

Xailah stood there for a moment, maybe more, in content silence. It wasn't her usual contemplative and dreamy quiet; this one was passive and thrumming with a warm joy. And then she looked to her companion- fair as newly fallen snow was she, and just as enchanting, with her dress black as a moonless night- to whom she offered a small, fond smile. Although they were not as close as they likely should have been, given their shared time together on the Gryffindor racing team; Xailah, in that moment, decided that there wasn't anyone else she would have rather attended this ball with. Della was competent. Fun (when she wasn't under a sheepish spell- the elder took notice of the peachy color rising to her junior's cheeks). But most of all, she wasn't here to weigh Xailah down. Really, the older lioness couldn't appreciate her enough for that alone, silly as it seemed.

There was a sibling-like regard the pair appeared to share, especially as they were both forced to explore different stages of socialization. The eldest was relearning enjoyment, while the youngest was diligently tugboated along- her task would be the most challenging to accomplish: the dreaded m-word. Mingling.

Oh the horror.

Xailah's first prompt, intended to give Della that first push towards forming acquaintanceships, was met with silence. She watched her smaller companion hennishly, as the snowy-haired girl scanned the area. Evidently no one would pique her interest- which was all fine and fair.

Because fortunately for Della, the possibility of snagging a shiny new acquaintance was but an awkward bump away. She needn't look any further- fortune (or maybe misfortune) was stacked in her favor this evening.

The elder lioness was seconds away from leading her frosty counterpart into the heart of the fray. The second year would be rescued, however, by an unlikely savior. Something would collide suddenly with Xailah's back, sending her lurching forward with a small stagger. "Ouh!" She jerked up instantly with a light jump, her back and shoulders going rigid, her hackles drawn into pin-points. Her brows drew together in a tight crinkle, and for a moment Della was pushed from her mind. She straightened to her full height, and turned to meet...

A boy?

And a rather small one at that. Short-lived confusion gave way to a soft expression; her features loosened, pulling away from their flinty edge. "Are you alright?" Xailah asked in return for his apology. The young man's prayers had been answered: his alleged confusion had not landed him in the blitzed-out talons of a so-called "mean girl". The fellow was given a quick once-over to verify his state of wellness. He looked fine enough. Nice suit. "You must be more careful, this is not the sort of place for anyone to fall down. You may get trampled by a dancer or a rampant stampede of first years, if you are not careful." She joked lightly.

Della may have been able to escape the spotlight for the moment, but that blazing beam would not stay away from her for long. Atlas'- or so he had introduced himself- awkward (if clumsy) recovery, prompted returned greetings. The social exchange would slide Xailah's attention back to the initial operation at hand. "Xailah Alptraum." A daintily clawed hand found her chest with the motions of a light, punctilious bow. "Pleased to make your acquaintance, Atlas." Her golden gaze would shift to Della with a twinkle, as the other girl followed suit with introductions. Atlas had unknowingly landed himself in the hot seat as their first test subject.

"You bumped into us just in the nick of time. My lovely cohort and I," Xailah gestured, with an open hand, towards Della, "were just on our way to see what awaits us at the snack table." Maybe that wasn't the truth, but that was besides the point. It was meant to be a hook and line. "Care to join us?" Should the boy accept, the fashionable duo would become an impromptu (yet still fashionable) trio. How long it would stay that way was anybody's guess. "So what brings you here, Mr. Atlas? Food? Atmosphere? Dancing? People...?"
Working on embarrassing Della Mingling and enjoying the evening. Initiating the first quest to find Della a shiny new friend, and Atlas is looking like a great contestant.

Open to interactions!

It was Friday, October 6th, 2023.

Tonight was when the Fall Ball 2023 was supposed to take place. They'd called it the Festival of Lights.

A pretty name and something that reminded him of the Asian custom. Which it probably was based off of, come to think of it. If it had been before July, Kim would have appreciated it more. Been more interested and probably would have come earlier when it had first begun. But as it was, he'd been drifting more and more lately, nothing seemed to catch his interest anymore. Other than taking care of the plants in the greenhouse and in his dorm room. He looked up at the sky as some 'fireworks' briefly went off above the boy.

Sophia would have loved to see something like this. She'd always been big on celebrations. Kim couldn't help but feel a little down thinking about such things. The fourteen year old's eyes flickered over the tables laden with various comestibles. A lot of them were empty, which wasn't surprising, but there was still a decent amount of food left over. Not that he had any desire to sample anything, he didn't feel in the mood to eat. But at the same time, Kim's stomach growled, as if to go against what his mind and heart were saying to him.

A sigh escaped his lips.

Well, he might as well take a bite to fill his stomach, the last thing he wanted was to hear his stomach.

Kim was currently wearing a black and red ancient Chinese traditional hanfu dress, along with a wig which gave him long dark hair, pulled up in a high ponytail and secured with a thick soft red hair-tie there. He carried a flute with him in his right hand, his wand tucked into the waistband of his dress. Kim made his way over to the tables, thankfully no one else was there at the moment, and let his blue eyes flicker over what remained of the feast. He picked up some of the remaining curry, which was somehow still rather warm now.

That would be enough to settle his stomach. But Kim also picked up a brownie, not being able to resist adding some kind of sweet to his meal. Maybe a macaron too. He chose a pink one and placed it on the side of his curry dish, along with the brownie and spoon. Not having enough hands for a drink too, Kim tucked his flute into his waistband and then grabbed a mug of cold water. With his choices settled, the dark haired teen looked around to see where he could go to eat. And avoid any people who decided to come around here.

Where should he go?

The banquet was beautiful. The lights cast a soft, warm glow reminiscent of summer sunlight into the darkening sky. Cyrus almost wished it were summertime, so warm he could feel the gentle breeze of the humid air of the east coast of North America on his skin. He blinked and Hogwarts was gone. In his mind's eye, he was back home with his aunt. He thought of the calming sound of ducks quacking while people chattered, and the magined sound made him smile.

It was then that Cyrus knew he should leave.

He had no friends, really. He could have mingled, could have gotten to know his fellow witches and wizards, but even has he meandered towards the other students, he knew he was out of place. Tall, gangly and dressed almost in costume, he realised that he wasn't at home. His usual self-confidence was replaced with quiet doubt, as if he were seated for an exam he hadn't studied for.

To feel better, he could have refreshments. Or, to do something even better, he could leave. He could go closer to the lake and smell the familiar aroma of freshwater. He could take time to himself until he felt comfortable in his own skin again. Until he didn't stick out like a sore thumb. He found his corn hood and untaped the lit candle that had previously been taped to it. He brought the candle in front of his face and blew it out. He would hold onto it and keep it as a souvenir.

Then, the American boy began to make his way out of the beautifully-lit area. He kept his head bowed as he left, vowing to himself that next time, he would have a friend. Next time, he would be happy without having to make himself happy. That wasn't too much to ask for, no? Cyrus had always been an excitable boy, anyway, tonight just wasn't his night. Socialising... No, he just couldn't do it.

Maybe later he would blame it on homesickness or missing his family. Maybe he would say he got too cold. Maybe he would tell himself it had just been late and he had needed his beauty sleep. No mater the reason, however, Cyrus slunk out of the banquet, hoping he remained unnoticed.
