Wonderland Waltz

CHAPTER 4
The downpour continued. Almost every attendee of the Wonderland Waltz was drenched by the thunderstorm summoned by @Aamon Athanatos. No one expected there would be a need for a hot air spell in a ball, but no one could foresee a breakout of fire either. That was a clever move nonetheless. Speaking of the Athanoatos family, they had set many motions during the ball. The fight between @Gideon Athanatos and @Paul Turner. The shade of red was diluted by the raindrop. The dance invitation from the young Gryffindor was described as ‘brave’ by the older Hufflepuff. The tension grew and then dissolved when Giddeon left. @Taylor Athanotos, who seemed to be at the center of the conflict, might’ve been the true director of this play. Their back-and-forth mind game looked absolutely dangerous.
On another note, the venue was a mess. The scene might have been as catastrophic as if trolls had broken into here and swung their bat everywhere. The corners of the table were slightly blackened by the fire earlier. The food and the drinks were in even worse condition. They were either soaked through or completely watered down beyond recognition. The marble stone floor was almost another trap. Slippery. Those ladies and gentlemen who wore fancy heels and dress shoes would have to dance carefully. Some students’ expensive gowns and finely tailored suits were dripping water, while others might even be burned at the edge. Yet there was still someone clever enough who had already enchanted the transparent umbrella for this eminently chaotic rainy day. @Eonaria Kabukimono cast a perfect Pluvia Velo. In the meantime, she also voiced concern for the butterflies conjured during the crowning ceremony. Indeed, that looked concerning. Yet, they were all safe and sound beneath the gazebo’s roof. No worries! A transparent umbrella appeared from @Paul Turner’s wand; the first-year had cast spells successfully in a streak. @Matthew Campbell, who seemed reluctant to be here, and his umbrella attracted a poor, soaked girl, @Olivia Williams. With some pause and interval, they had a pleasant conversation that continued on. Olivia’s hot-air charm definitely worked. Her dress was dry and comfortable again. Concerned for his date, @Avery Gray, @Mikey Forville, being a wonderful partner, conjured the umbrella smoothly to cover both him and Avery. What a lovely gentleman! @Akari Kabukimono, who came up with a great suggestion for the Hogwarts faculty that they probably should fireproof the campus, shared a moment with @Hikari Fujimoto and conjured the umbrella to shield them from the rain. Regardless of all the mess, some other people decided they would not care about it at all; they danced, they ate, and they had fun. To them, this might be just another normal day.
Despite everything, the joyous atmosphere was continuous. The members of Spring Royalty came up to the stage of the gazebo proudly. @Cassis Jiang had cast the Pluvia Velo to prevent her dress from being ruined by the rain, so when she was on the stage, her look was still perfect. The Ravenclaw conjured another essential: the flowers. The spell was a success. Beautiful flowers appeared. There were even butterflies that stayed on them for a while. @Liliya Starkova, another member of the spring royalty, seemed completely lost at first when the announcement was made. After a brief moment of processing the news, she stood on the path leading to the stage and felt her emotions. Even when the glistening pearls were running down her face, Liliya still looked stunning. After their spell effectively extinguished the fire, another win for @Aly Salinger was announced. The intelligent and lovely girl dried herself before coming up to the stage. It was a proud moment for Ravenclaw; three out of four were from the blue and bronze house. The two seventh-years, Aly Salinger and @Dealla Prince’s wonderful performance at the pageant had won them the glory.
While the crowd cheered for the winners, @Kaitlyn Connor and @Eun-ji Lee Hunt came to the rescue of this neverending storm. They almost pointed their wands at the heavy dark clouds and cast the countercharm almost simultaneously. With experienced casters working together, the countercharm succeeded effortlessly. As Eun-ji was casting the spell, @Ye-jun Lee carefully held a newly conjured transparent umbrella beside her. The torrential rain finally ceased. The cloud dissipated, revealing the dark blue sky again. It was a strange scene at first. The conflict and chaos could be concealed underneath the disguise of the big rain. Without the noise of the thunderstorm, the laughter and conversations seemed loud again. People’s reactions might be varied. Maybe some people did love the rain; some might’ve hated it with a passion. But who knew?
As mentioned earlier, almost every food and drink had been tortured and ruined by the water and fire - an odd combination indeed. Yet as soon as the rain stopped, they were replaced by the freshly prepared replacement. Even the drenched board game sets were renewed too. Though the floor was still wet, the attendees might enjoy the ball nonetheless.

Wonderland Waltz
The rain had finally stopped. For the first time in what felt like forever, Mikey wasn't worrying about getting soaked every time he took a step. The dance looked like it had barely survived the evening. Decorations hung at odd angles, puddles reflected the lantern light, and some of the tables looked like they'd been through a small disaster. Somehow, though, people were still laughing. Music still floated through the air. Hogwarts had a strange way of carrying on no matter what happened. Mikey stood beside Avery for a moment, taking it all in as he dismissed his umbrella spell. The night definitely hadn't gone the way anyone expected, but honestly, that seemed to happen a lot around here.
A movement across the crowd caught his eye. It was his friend Olivia. For a second he simply watched her through the crowd. It was funny how easy it was to recognize people you spent time with, even in a place this busy. Between studying together, random conversations, and the occasional adventure neither of them had planned on getting involved in, Olivia had become one of the people he had grown closest too over his 2 years at Hogwarts.
Then a thought hit him. Avery and Olivia knew who each other were, obviously. Hogwarts wasn't that big. But he couldn't remember them ever actually talking. The realization made him smile. That seemed like something that needed fixing. When Avery glanced over, he nodded toward Olivia. "Come on. There's someone I've been meaning to introduce you to." Mikey gently took Avery's hand and led the way through the crowd. They stepped around puddles and groups of students who were still excitedly talking about the storm, the fire, the pageant results, and everything else that had happened over the course of the evening.
"Olivia!" He raised a hand in greeting. There was a hint of amusement in his voice as he stopped in front of her and a boy Mikey had seen around before but was not sure what his name was. He looked between the two girls. Mikey rubbed his arm before gesturing toward Avery. "Olivia, this is Avery." His grin widened slightly. "My girlfriend." Then he looked toward Avery. "And Avery, this is Olivia. One of my closest friends." There was a quiet sincerity in his voice when he said it. Both of them had become important parts of his life in very different ways, and somehow he'd never gotten around to introducing them properly. Looking between the two, he couldn't help feeling hopeful. They were both kind, both easy to talk to, and honestly far more sensible than he was most days. If anyone was going to get along, it was probably these two.

This was rather unexpected. At least, it felt unexpected to her. Kait was completely certain that moving into a protective stance for her pretty date was not on her bingo card of likely events at this ball. It wasn’t exactly unwelcome, but it was a role that she never thought herself even remotely capable of executing. She was hardly intimidating and knew all too well that she was not very strong, either. Yet, wanting to protect Emi felt like the most natural action she could take.
Kaitlyn gently squeezed Emi’s hand. She wouldn’t simply let something happen to her fellow third-year, especially without a fight. As a prefect, she was hardly an intimidating presence. For now, she wanted to protect not just her own safety but Emiline’s as well. She was loyal to her friends, especially when she was on a date with one of them.
The winners for the Spring Royalty were announced, and Kait smiled gently. She wasn’t well-versed with any of them, but she still clapped respectively. It was, indeed, an accomplishment. As it continued to rain, she felt her hair and outfit absorb the water. While it was certainly not a good thing, she didn’t attempt to stop it from happening.
Still maintaining her defensive stance, Kaitlyn looked to the sky. Thankfully, she wasn’t the only one to attempt to stop the rainstorm. The storm quickly ceased, and the sky came back into view. At least her clothing wouldn’t get wetter. She let out a long breath of relief, before turning back to Emiline. While it was certainly possible to try to dry themselves off, she had to wonder if that would do more harm than good at this rate.
“Now that the rain has stopped …” She trailed off, placing her wand safely behind her ear. “... Now we can celebrate this ball, correctly, and have fun together.” A shy smile crossed her lips.

✽The rain had finally ebbed away. Avery was thankful for that. Though there was no saving her dripping dress now. She glanced at Mikey and nearly laughed. The two of them were soaked through even when the umbrella was in use. That was fine. Avery did not care. All she cared about was the handsome gentleman that stood closely to her. Still gripping her hand firmly in his own.
In the blink of an eye, Avery went from standing at the edge of the doorway to Mikey, to feeling herself being pulled forward by his hand towards someone. That someone was a girl Avery recognized from her own house and year. Olivia. Avery had not realized that Mikey had known the other girl nor that the other girl was at the ball. Well, this was going to make the night all the more fun. Avery had enjoyed Olivia's company in the times they had spent together before, so why would this time be different.
Though for some reason Avery felt something deep down. A feeling that told her something was not right. That something was going to happen tonight, but what? What could possibly be happening? She had already survived the awful fire. She did not want something else blowing up in her face.
"Hi Olivia. It's nice to see you again. How have you been?" Avery smiled at the girl. ✽

”Olivia!”
Oh no, oh no, oh no.
Olivia glanced quickly at Mikey who was holding up a hand in greeting. Damn it, they had made eye contact and now Mikey was heading straight for her with Avery behind him. Why? WHYWHYYYYYYYY?!
The strange feeling Olivia had felt before flared up again when Mikey stopped in front of her with Avery. But Olivia forced herself to meet Mikey’s gaze and took a few steps away from Matthew because she didn’t want to drag him into this.
“Olivia, this is Avery.”
Olivia met Avery’s gaze with a stiff smile and a nod.
“My girlfriend,” Mikey’s words followed then.
Come on Olivia, it wasn’t a surprise. She knew they were together and honestly, she was happy for them. Why did it feel so strange?
Mikey’s voice interrupted Olivia’s train of thought as he introduced Olivia as one of his closest friends to Avery. Heat flared up inside her. She was one of his closest friends! Part of the inner circle!
Again a voice interrupted her train of thought, this time it was Avery.
“Hi Olivia. It’s nice to see you again. How have you been?”
Olivia forced a smile that she hoped answered Avery’s.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Olivia said as she tried to stand normally. Should she cross her arms? Put them behind her back? At her side? Just let them hang? Oh, brace yourself now.
She looked between Mikey and Avery. “Hey Mikey, how nice to see you,” she said, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. Damn it, she hated heels, converse were much more comfortable. “And you and Avery,” she added, but her voice was different. Olivia started fingering her bracelet. “Nice to see you here… together… as a couple…”
No, now she actually has to toughen up, Olivia was socially incompetent enough 75% of the time but this was a whole new level.
“Nice suit,” she said to Mikey. Oh my God Olivia. “You too Avery, lovely dress,” her compliment to Avery was more like a snort. I have to get out of here I have to get out of here I have to get out of here. “I guess you’ve had a nice ball so far. Together. As a couple.”
Olivia fingered her bracelet more and more hysterically and had a sudden thought. “That’s Matthew,” she said, pointing to Matthew who was standing a little way off. “He’s in Slytherin and we shared an umbrella when it was pouring.” The last thing about the umbrella just flew out of her mind but Olivia glanced at Mikey to see if he would react.
Right at that moment she had made up her mind. She would never, ever, ever go to a ball again in her entire life. And she would definitely never wear high heels and a fancy dress. Grandpa sweaters and converse suited her much better.

❀ After their little friend group all helped to tackle the fire issues near the entrance, Leo was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief. Now that the chaos of the fire was over, they were met with a sudden rain falling down over them all. He looked around their group until his eyes landed on Rosaline. Truthfully, he knew he was only attending because of her as he didn't really hold much of an interest in these things. So instead of waiting for the annoyance Erast to steal her away again, Leo was uncharacteristically impulsive and took Rosa's hand to sweep her away and inside the actual venue. "Come on," He said softly and with a bright smile on his face.
While the rain had ruined the once beautiful aesthetic of the ball, he wasn't going to let that ruin the night. He wasn't sure what had come over him, maybe he was just feeling a stroke of confidence after he successfully helped to save the venue from the fires that broke out. Mostly he just wanted to enjoy the rest of the night despite the minor hiccup that started the evening.
The food and decorations might have been messed up at the moment, Leo saw people going out and still enjoying themselves despite the rain that came down. He turned to Rosa, tilted his head slightly and smiled a soft smile again as he spoke. "Do you want to dance?" The whole time he hadn't let go of her hand and it was only at that moment that he asked that he realized this causing his cheeks to flush a little.
The two young first years had danced before at the fall ball where they had attended together and although they had come together with friends this time he still wanted to have the opportunity to dance again together. Deep down he knew why but he also knew he didn't want to admit that openly. The feelings that he possessed were so new to the boy, scary too. He knew how his family was, knew what they would think if he were to be honest, and that too was enough to make him want to push the feelings away as much as possible. But despite all that he still was determined to keep spending time with her.
Dragging the Gryffindor girl to the dance floor, the rain falling over them to the point their hair and outfits were soaked completely now, he pulled her close and started dancing with her. "This is definitely not the way I thought tonight would go," he started to say as the music played. His eyes were fixed only on her as they swayed casually to the music together. "I'm sorry your hard work was ruined by this sudden chaos." Leo said and offered her another smile. Even with the rain ruining her hair, make up and outfit, she still looked pretty regardless he had to admit. He wanted to tell her this but was suddenly left shy after the sudden bold moves of pulling her away from their friend group to dance. His eyes began changing to a shade of rosy pink, something that was all too common whenever he was around her like this. Although the two had become such good friends over the year and had fun talking and hanging out, he still felt nervous around her. The close proximity they had while dancing made his stomach fill up with butterflies.
