"What's up here?"

Came Ophelia's question, Paul replied: "Long story short, we think we might have found a ward with a weird symbol on it. What it means, I've no clue." Summarised the boy.

There was a gush of warm air coming from the forest then, so Paul looked that way. The fire was spreading, and the boy frowned, worried. He poked his elbow into Ave's side, pointing in the direction. "Look, i-it's spreading. Shouldn't we... I dunno, do something?" The boy tightened his grip on his wand, as he stood up. The part of his brain, which suggested that this was the fault of those who started casting flames on the trees in the dry forest, and therefore, they were the ones who should clean up this mess, went silent, beaten by the alarm in his head that rang to wake the urge to protect, which, Paul thought, almost all Gryffindors had. Dammit, why are they not extinguishing? I hope they'll be on to it!

And then, he saw Robin Lockett, his acquaintance, running for his life. And behind him, there were three giant spiders. Robin seemed to be bleeding too. And there was another girl that he recognized; one that he helped to save earthworms in the courtyard. She seemed to be protecting herself from another huge spider. A happy family, thought the boy.

"What the-" Did Paul force out in disbelief, when he saw the two disasters. Shouldn't I help them? But, I can't do any healing magic, dammit. I could try to scare off the spiders. Ran through his mind.

"Christ in heaven..." Paul's eyes widened in terror, his lips waved in a grimace, as he physically froze, letting out only the whisper of shock and worry. It sometimes happened to the boy when he was afraid, that his muscles froze and he couldn't move, let alone speak for a moment. Yet, he could think, so that's what he did...

Bloody hell! What on earth is happening? Is... is this what every detention looks like? Bloody horrible! But wait, isn't it some sort of a twisted joke? An... illusion, or something? A way to show us that if we keep being naughty, getting detentions, we will suffer? Is the Headmaster trying to prove his point? Well, if so, then it's bloody working!

After several seconds, Paul started moving again, squatting back to the stone that he managed to clean. "Dammit... we must repair the wards, so that the spiders and other vermin don't get to the castle. It's either that, or burning to the ground thanks to our... not so intelligent mates, or being eaten by those scary spiders." Thought the boy rationally aloud, drawing a vague backwards G with his wand over the ward and ordering the wand confidently to cast: "Reparo!"

That's the only way we can survive this. But only if the wards' magic gets back with the repairing.

At first, Skylar thought it might be a coin or perhaps a piece of jewelry someone had lost years ago. Anything shiny was more interesting than clearing brushes anyway. Beside the stack of black stones, she carefully removed them one by one. The structure looked too deliberate to be natural. Obviously, these stones had been placed here on purpose for an unknown reason by someone. “What are these?” She peered at a small collection of glass bottles resting inside them, each one filled with smoky, dark liquid, sealed tightly. “It’s really… really… odd.” It did not look like any potion she recognized. Her eyes were curious as she picked up some of the bottles to examine, carefully held one up toward the sky, hopefully there was some light in the dark clouds to help her see this thing better. The black substance swirled slowly inside as if it were alive. Somehow, this made her want to study it even more. Maybe it was an old potion ingredient or a poison. Either way, she already knew she wanted to bring it back to her dorm and investigate it properly. Her fingers tightened slightly around the bottles. Then something happened.

People shouted, screamed, and chaos. Students scattered in every direction. Skylar saw the smoke, and flames spread near the ward line. “Seriously? The fire again?” The young Slytherin thought she had not been far from the fire accidents this year. Or she just brought bad luck everywhere she goes. Yet, there was something incredibly more shocking to surprise her. The trees near the Forbidden Forest shuddered violently as an enormous shape burst from the woods. Long legs. Dark color. Far too many eyes. Larger than anything she had imagined from books. “Merlin! An Acromantula? Wahhh…” Two eyes were amazed. How did they just find her before she found them? “So, this is what aunty used to study?” She muttered. For a moment, she forgot entirely that everyone around her was screaming, crying. Then another scream cut through the clearing. Right. People were running, and the giant spiders were generally considered a problem. She snapped back to reality. “A…Umm… We should help them. We need to get everyone away from them.” She pointed her wand toward the sky. “Periculum!” That was the first spell she could think of, but she doubted if there were any adults close by who would rush to their aid and help them in time. “I’m thinking about distracting those Acromantulas before they hurt more people. Maybe we should keep them occupied long enough for everyone else to get out.” Maybe Richard had some good ideas on it, as she pointed somewhere beyond the tree line to show him. CRASH!

Turned too quickly, one bottle just slipped from her hands. The glass scattered in small pieces, unleashing the dark, smoke-like liquid curling through the air like black mist. “Oh no.” Not sure it would make the situation worse, or catch some good nose of some wolf around. “That’s a waste.” Well… Careless shrugged. She still had some bottles left, just needed to carry them more carefully.

Holy shit!

Yes, that was the only thing Ophelia could think of at that moment. Because what on earth was happening here? Spiders and fire? Seriously? Was this some kind of twisted joke the headmaster was playing on them? Not cool. Ophelia visibly flinched at a screech she heard from the forest; maybe it was the spiders? Ugh, even worse than the screech zombies would be making in movies. Spiders were the worst, especially so if they were this huge.

She started to feel guilty; should she not be helping the ones being chased by the spiders? Or should she not try to extinguish the fire their schoolmates had been successful at lighting? "Should we help them?" Ophelia asked out loud, although she started walking toward the forest without waiting for their response. This was idiotic, seriously; not her running towards the fire, she saw another Slytherin (@Jada Blake) do that, too; but students setting stuff on fire during detention!

"You okay there?" She asked the other students and the Slytherin after she attempted to cast the extinguishing charm. Idiotic! She ran next to the Slytherin, a girl she recognized from classes, Jada, so that she was nearer to the people and the fire. Dammit, it was getting hotter and hotter by the second. Ophelia was surprised her wand hadn't slipped from her hand.

1) While everything written is true for Dido, much is intentionally incorrect (eg: Dido is, in fact, not in Ravenclaw!)
Dido tried really really hard to listen to Tina.

She got the vague gist of the girl’s rant: “blah blah blah I’m useless blah blah poor me blah blah Dido you must feel sorry for me etc etc”. Dido even managed to force a couple of well-timed nods and concerned eyebrow raises while she continued to mindlessly push leaves and dirt around with the sharp tip of the shears, just to show how deeply she felt for and understood the (seemingly ungrateful) Ravenclaw’s woes. After all, Dido was anything but a bad friend.

Before she could deliver the perfect response to Tina’s final words (which Dido presumed must have been a question given the increased pitch), something caught her eye. A small flash of orange light. Scratch that. A big flash of orange light, coming from the wands of some boys a little further away. As Dido had seen and marvelled over time and time again watching her mother add dry leaves to the bonfire, the crisp, bone-dry undergrowth caught a spark from the lapping flames and quickly exploded into a raging fire, perfect for toasting extremely large marshmellows. She nudged Tina anxiously, a worried line appearing on her face as she stared at the bright flames, almost unable to tear her gaze away.

Worse than the flames growing exponentially fast, several students themselves seemed to finding themselves in difficulty with the fire, specifically Angel, Dido’s room-mate. The usually happy and characteristically angelic Slytherin now looked positively demonic, cloaked in flames as she was. Instead of defaulting to utter terror, as was Dido’s usual reaction, her mind first took a second to laugh at the line that kept repeating in her head: “Is that girl is on fire?” . Somehow unexposed to the popular song during the last twelve years of her life, she was immediately reminded of those terribly cheesy films her mum used to watch, each containing a copious number of similar dreadful pick-up lines.

Succeeding in banishing the practically twisted amusement from her thoughts, Dido called out, “Angel! Careful!”, unsure of what exactly she wanted to achieve by shouting her room-mate’s name alongside a far too late warning. At least she beat Tina to it.

Speaking of Tina, or at least people besides those directly involved with the fire, Dido finally shrieked in pure fear as three gargantuan spiders appeared. She wasn’t scared of spiders at all usually but, usually, they were not a hundred times her size. But what could Dido do?

Tell a teacher. That was always what kids were supposed to do when there was trouble. She looked at the headmaster, or rather, where the headmaster had just been only moments before. Where was he?

A spider crashed its leg down into a student, knocking her to the floor. What could Dido do?!

Her mind flashed back to her very first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson, which she had so hated at the time. Green- no, red sparks. Red sparks. Red sp- Just as Dido raised her wand, she saw a few others move to do the same and she lowered it, actions still clouded by her still paralysing fear of failing at something others could do fine. But what could Dido do!?

Once again, her mind turned to Angel, still blazing. Shutting her eyes tightly and praying that it would work, she rushed over, abandoning Tina, and shouted, “Extinguo!

Following the attempted cast, Dido would turn away from the flaming snake, judging how quickly she could run away and, most importantly, whether she could out-run her fellow more cowardly first years.

It was peaceful. Andrea had almost finished cleaning her designated area alongside Robin and the other students.

She hummed to herself, a habit she had developed from her long days at home. Despite the muddy ground underneath her feet and the occasional dust making her sneeze, she actually didn't hate detention as much as she thought she would. That is, until she had gotten a whiff of the faint scent of smoke.

Cautious, Andrea turned to the forest only to be faced with the sight of a forest fire looming in the distance. Her eyes widened a fraction, feet already stepping backwards as her partner went to inform the headmaster.

She glanced at the other students around her, reading their micro expressions of fear, shock, and confusion. Snapping out of her staring pattern, Andrea prepared to run in the direction her partner had gone. However, she had failed to notice the dark, dangerous creatures that had been lurking behind her, hidden in the shadows of the large forest.

She barely processed the sickening, wet crunch of something sharp going through her leg. Andrea hissed in pain, limping as one of the large Acromantulas attempted to fully impale her thigh with its sharp legs. Adrenaline quickly surged through her, forcing the young witch to scramble back to her feet and keep running despite the blood running down from her thigh.

With her dominant leg injured, Andrea's lower limbs quickly gave out, causing her to once again stumble onto the rough ground. She groaned at the agonizing ache on her right thigh, desperately trying to apply pressure onto the area. Fortunately, an older Ravenclaw had immediately spotted her condition and rushed over to help prevent even more blood from flowing out.

The older student's jacket didn't do much, but she still appreciated the effort. Slowly, with a few grumbles, Andrea reached over to drape an arm over the other girl's shoulders, "Help me. Or help me find someone who can. Please." She wheezed, attempting to be somewhat polite despite the urgency in her tone.

The pressure on her wound had slowed down the bleeding for a bit, allowing Andrea just enough time to stand up with less pain. She leaned on the older girl, hoping to find stability in her uneven steps.

Andrea still had her wand clutched in her left hand. She quickly transferred the magical object to her dominant right hand, pointed it towards the sky, and casted, "Periculum!" She spotted several other red sparks erupting into the sky alongside hers, presenting the true gravity of the situation.

Logan glanced at the students working beside her, noticing that they also had gloves. In fact, it seemed like most of the people around her had them. Did she manage to completely miss being offered gloves and tools to assist her? Probably, she had not been paying the closest attention to what was being instructed of them. The girl just knew what she was supposed to be doing.

The old brush and weeds dug into her hands as she worked, splinters sticking into the fragile skin and blisters beginning to form. The seventh year would definitely have to heal herself later, or go and visit the overly friendly Hogwarts nurse. That was a problem for later though, as she was suddenly startled by the appearance of a swarm of insects. Luckily, the girl was able to step back in time to avoid the angry swarm, but one of them.must have stepped on the nest to disturb them.

Logan felt sorry that they had disturbed the nest, knowing the insects were just trying to protect their home. Quickly she raised her wand and attempted to cast Ebublio. Maybe, if she was able to trap them in a bubble, they would be able to finish their work here and be safe from an attack while not harming the insects either.

@Lauren Vanes
Sorry for the late reply! But if you want anything changed, let me know!
Rosie was still standing there, chest heaving, while she waited for Lauren to say something, anything. To disprove what she believed, to show that they really were friends and not a disaster waiting to happen. To show that maybe, just maybe, Lauren really did care about her enough to not hurt her like it seemed she'd hurt everything and everyone else. Like the dangerous girl she was, she'd always been.

Rosie, stop! What are you thinking, she's your friend!

Maybe before she dragged me into these woods and endangered both of us, after proving just how hungry she is to cause pain and destruction to others! Just think of those poor paintings, defenseless, much like you are now...

Something inside of her that was not there before perked up at the thought, seizing the moment that her bubbliness and kindness seemed to weaken. The side of her that was fearful, was scared of the danger that her friend had become, welcomed this weakness. That meant that there was less holding her here.

Come on, we can leave now! Just go, run without her! That's the only way we'll stay alive, the only way that we won't die at her hands. If we go now, maybe we will be safe!

Why would we leave without her? She's our friend, she's just having a rough day, that's all!

But if she slashed those paintings, then who's to say that she won't do the same to us?

The thoughts filled Rosalyn's head, rendering her unable to move and unable to think past the fog of confusion and hatred beginning to roll in, overcoming her senses. They continued coming, and Rosie had no choice but to keep listening.

Then, she saw something that managed to stop the furious argument occurring in her own head, stopping her back and forth over whether or not Lauren's intentions were murderous, something that managed to catch her off guard enough to stop all of her thoughts altogether.

A tear.

Just a tear. Falling down from Lauren's eye, dripping from her cheek. A tear that would seem very normal, if only it were coming from a more normal eleven year old girl. But coming from Lauren, that tear meant so much more than if it had come from anyone else.

It meant sorrow. Pure and genuine. Not terror, not anger, but sadness and a deep regret, a worry, a giving up of hope. And in that moment, with that tear, Rosie realized that nothing was wrong with Lauren, but something was wrong with her.

And no, not in the sense of 'it's not you, it's me', but in the sense of 'something has genuinely happened here and I need to figure out what is wrong'. Because that fog from earlier, the arguing in her head, that second inner monologue wasn't her own. Or, at least, how it normally was.

Sure, people who come across as all bubbly and happy and kind and fun do typically have a different side to them, the one that carries the burden and the weight, the one that hides inside of them and only comes out when the situation really demands it. Not a split personality, but a different part of the person that usually remains unseen. However, in Rosie's case, that wasn't what happened.

There was no 'second side' there at all, really. Sure, she did sometimes hide slight frustration or sadness, but she was always just…happy. Genuinely, truly, always happy. For the most part. And that second voice, that second inner monologue, that second arguer providing the sort of 'devil on her shoulder', should not have been there at all.

"Lauren, I hear you. And I don't think you would kill me, I don't even know why I said that." she started, sounding confused and a bit outraged at her own previous words.

"I don't think that there are any invisibility cloaks around us, but I do know that something is wrong. I wouldn't ever, not in a million years, doubt that you cared about me or wanted me to be safe. So there is something going on here, and I need to figure it out. So just…give me a second." Rosie said, sitting down on a stump she happened to come across at just the right time.

As she sat there, her head buried into her hands resting slightly above her lap, she began to think. She decided to retrace what she'd done that day, what she'd heard, eaten, everything.

Alright. First of all, I woke up in my dorm. I said hi to Rosy, and we both got dressed for the day. Then, I ate breakfast, some toast with butter and eggs after.

Second of all, I went to class. That was normal, I did all the lessons and stuff. Then, I was walking to the Library to return a book I'd just finished. Then…

Wait a second. Why can't I remember going to the Library? I know I was going there, but I don't remember ever getting there. And it's hard to get lost on the way there, I usually end up there when I'm lost going somewhere else! That's like, my home base! So what happened…

She decided to check, just to confirm that she hadn't made it to the Library, and that something had happened before she could get there. She looked into her bag, combing through all of the plasters and candy and pens before finally reaching her book. The same one that she'd already checked out.

Which means I never got there…

"Lauren, I've narrowed down that something happened, but I genuinely can't remember what. Something before I got to the Library that made me end up not going." she said, sharing her current findings with her friend, hoping that she wasn't too confused or thought that Rosie was still upset with or scared of her.

Suddenly, she felt her vision begin to blur slightly, as a scene began to overtake her thoughts, pulling her back into it.

The hallway. So vividly portrayed in her thoughts that she must have been there earlier. She was walking, book in hand, to go to the Library. Then, a voice.

"Hey, wait. Stop. Do you know who Lauren Vanes is?"

"Oh, yeah, I do! She's my friend, why do you ask?"

Dialogue. Returning to her mind. She didn't remember it, but the words were slowly emerging, as if surfacing from underwater.

The first voice had been male, seemingly older than Rosie herself. The second was her own, in response to the question.

"Your name is Rosalyn, right? Rosie?" a second voice asked, a girl's voice.

"Yep, that's me! Why though?" Her own response.

Rosie felt her vision return, pulling her back to the present. She was putting the pieces together, one by one, and they were beginning to form a picture in her head, of an interaction that she'd for some reason forgotten entirely up to this point.

"Lauren. You have two older siblings, right? A brother and a sister?" she asked, confirming what she already knew to be true, just to make sure that she wasn't misremembering yet another important thing. Then, her vision blurred again, and she found herself back in her memory.

"That's what I thought. Follow us." from the boy, as he gestured and began to walk.

"[i[Umm, no thanks! I still don't know who you are or why you know my name, therefore we are strangers! So, stranger danger, I'm not following you.[/i]" she'd said, at least a bit of her common sense still in place at that point.

"Follow. Us." the girl said, sounding pretty scary, wand in hand. Rosie followed, because she hadn't been in the mood to get hexed.

Then, she felt as the entire rest of the memory surfaced, leaving her with nothing to do but watch it play out from within her own mind, almost as if she were having a very detailed vision, or something of the sort.

After following the two, she'd found herself inside of an empty classroom. Then, they began to speak to Rosie, saying many different things. Mostly about how evil and vile and absolutely horrible Lauren was and always would be, and how even the fact that she was Parselmouth and in Slytherin proved just how bad she really was.

Then, though Rosie couldn't remember the exact spell, she definitely did remember the feeling of her memories being partially scrubbed away, leaving her with just a strange feeling towards Lauren and curiosity as to why in the world she was in a classroom when she'd been trying to get to the Library.

Back to the present as whatever strange vision left her brain, she blinked rapidly, trying to clear the last bits of the mind-fog away.

"Lauren, you're not going to believe this. Actually, no, you are." she started.

"Your siblings, I'm assuming, took me into a classroom earlier, told me some horrible things about you, and erased my memories partially so all I remembered was those feelings and the implications of what they said, but not that anyone had told me anything. Does that make sense? Probably not…" she finished up, managing to get everything out in just a single breath, which left her needing air. She took a few deep breaths, to calm herself down and get rid of some of the newfound fear not directed at Lauren, waiting for her friend's response.

"I'm so sorry, by the way. I know I shouldn't have asked if you wanted to kill me, that's crazy! I really am sorry, and I get it if you want me to just not be around you anymore." she added, feeling absolutely overcome with the guilt.

The answer to his question hadn't come immediately, and Richard realized that whatever had caught his attention might be worth far more than any piece of jewelry. He tossed aside the large branch he was holding before approaching Skylar. He knelt before her, watching intently as his housemate retrieved strange vials from a hidden stash, filled with a very peculiar, black, smoky substance. His eyebrows immediately rose at the discovery. Fascinated, he let her take about half of them before taking some himself. Glancing quickly around to make sure no one was looking in their direction, he hurried to hide the vials in any available pockets. He kept one, turning it toward the moon. What a strange substance! In his mind, he would undoubtedly dedicate himself into a thorough research on it, without telling anyone.

I won’t say anything if you do the same,” he said casually.

Events unfolded rapidly, tearing the two children away from their discovery. The fire licked at all the vegetation in its path, and countless spiders swarmed towards the entire group, including them.

Merlin! An Acromantula? Wahhh...A...Umm... We should help them. We need to get everyone away from them. I’m thinking about distracting those Acromantulas before they hurt more people. Maybe we should keep them occupied long enough for everyone else to get out.”, she said after casting a Periculum.

In the chaos, Skylar dropped one of his vials, making the Slytherin cough as a thick black smoke enveloped them. He drew his wand and quickly moved away from the strange smoke to regain his composure.

We must leave, NOW!” Richard replied forcefully as all the alarms in his mind made him act on pure instinct.

When he saw a large spider nearby heading towards them, he swiftly directed his wand towards it and curtly casted: “Flipendo!”

Isabeau continued cutting back debris, the failure of Reyna's attempt to use the levitation charm only registering breifly. It was sloppy, but yet again, recoverable. The fire, however, proved to be a different story.

Her attention snapped to the flames as soon as she heard the commotion. The fire near them had overlapped with someone else's flames, enveloping the wardline into a wall of orange and yellow. Smoke began to fill the air as the forest moved. Isabeau saw it a fraction too late.

She inhaled sharply as her body shifted to evade. Slow, she was too slow.

The impact was sudden. The spider's thick webbing struck her hard, knocking her body off balance and slamming her to the ground, the sticky binding tight across her arms and torso. A small groan left her lips from the impact.

"Well... that's unfortunate." she muttered, her voice controlled. Her nose scrunched up at the sight of the icebox size spider. Isabeau could say with much confidence she didn't favor insects or bugs all to much. However her distaste was going to have to take a back seat for now. Her priority was getting out of these webs and getting out of here.

She attempted to test the binds, trying to break free from the sicky webs as they held firm. She couldn't reach her wand either. She couldn't panic. Panicking would cloud her mind and she needed to be able to think rationally. Taking a deep breath, her gaze lifted to Reyna instead.

"Reyna." she called the girl's name, loud enough for her to hear over the chaos, but not screaming or yelling. Her tone sharpend as she continued, "You have a spell or something that can get me out of this?" she asked, doing her best to remain calm as her eyes flicked back and forth between the spiders and the burning forest and her companion "Preferably one that works and before those spiders decide I'm an easy target or I burn to death?"

Times existed where mere words could not possibly begin to encapsulate a situation. The longer Livia remained stuck in this infinitely problematic detention, the more she imagined the occurrences could only have been portrayed via painting or even sculpture. One had to stop time and capture an image in just a hint of a second. Any longer, and it lost its potency.

Though drawn to the forest, the crackling of flames served like a bolt of white-hot lightning to the attention. Livia's eyes narrowed. Whomever had deduced that it would be the most intelligent idea to set fire to a forest was certainly an utter imbecile. No doubt it involved the likes of Norwood, if he were present.

Camille's words did not require a response from her – not yet. She was aware of his movements out of her periphery, and his defensive – but not rude, not really – words nearly brought her mirth. No, she would not lift a finger, not when, staring about the forest, she had seen nothing of necessity to resolve. This entire situation seemed like the most bothersome drivel. If not for the forest fire beginning to unfold, she would have neatly begun to clip away at some of the overgrowth on the ward stones. The spreading of the flames, however, stalled her movements.

Livia glanced back at Camille, who had, to the amazement of absolutely no one, repaired a stick. She did not know if it even deserved a wry comment from her. Wow, what a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious stick! she could have exclaimed. She refrained from such an impulse, though, as the chaos emanating from her surroundings claimed her attention instead. Don't answer that, Camille had said, and, well, with the fanning of the flames, she would not.

She stood straighter, as if in an attempt to have a better view of all of the ostentatious occurrences, and slipped off her gloves. She would then reach for her wand, though of what she would do, she was not yet sure. She set her jaw, her molars grinding together as she scoured the surroundings, searching for even a glimpse of the headmaster. Except... he was no longer there.

Livia would then return her focus to Camille, curious as to whether or not he had noticed this opportunity. 'I could not tell you which of these utter imbeciles thought it a lovely idea to set the forest aflame.' She paused. She did not necessarily require his input, nor did she know if it would be beneficial to include him in her decision-making process. 'Whatever the case, the headmaster is no longer where he was previously. I would posit that now is, perhaps, the best time to leave, if neither of us wish to be burnt to a crisp.'

Perhaps the better, kinder thing to do would have been to have cast a strong metelojinx or tempest jinx to alleviate the flames. Even a simple extinguo could have brought justice. However, forest fires were often catalysts of growth; if the world governed itself by natural laws, then this would surely hold true. Livia, then, was more concerned for her own escape than the benefit of others.

Still, though (and perhaps against her better judgement), she lingered. She would wait, though backing away from the edge of the forest, her spindly fingers wrapped around her wand even as she clutched the otherwise-discarded gloves to her chest. One might say she was poised to cast an extinguo if any flames were to be thrown her way.

modded action if necessary: if fire comes near her, cast extinguo.
