"Yeah, he's muggle-born," she answered, "and I don't know, I don't want to sound boy crazy like my sister. There's just something about him. It's like we're bonded or something." She wasn't out to have some big romance before her time but there was something about Clifton where she could be herself always and any time she faltered a little bit, he was there to help bring her up, support her, make her better.
"So what are we going to do on these slumber parties?" she never really had one before. "Do they have themes? Oh, Rose! You've got to ask if its okay if you come over for at least one. I'll do a themed slumber party and it will be so much fun!" Alina liked to plan a good party, even if they were sometimes hokey. Sometimes hokey was the best sort of fun.
"Write tonight. Write tonight if its okay!" It made it more difficult when parents didn't know anything about these friends their children took. "Maybe my father could even meet your mum if needed. I mean, I think he'd at least try to make the attempt. Perhaps." But she'd at least pressure him into it if it meant she could have a friend over that summer or she could go see that friend.

"You don't sound boy crazy," Rose reassured Alina. "Trust me, I know boy crazy when I see it." Her older sister, Faith, was currently dating a boy and he was all she would talk about. It was all Charlie this and Charlie that and it just infuriated Rose sometimes, though she never showed it.
Alina asked about what they were supposed to do at slumber parties. Rose didn't feel very qualified to tell her, as she hadn't had much experience, but she told her what she knew.
"I've only really had a couple of slumber parties," Rose confessed. "And they were all American slumber parties. Maybe they're different in England, but usually you have pizza and a lot of candy, watch a movie, and pretty much just catch up and hang out. And you almost always stay up absurdly late. There's a lot of stuff to do at my house, we'd come up with something," Rose explained.
"And I'll write tonight," Rose promised. "And a themed slumber party at your house sounds fun already!" When Alina talked about maybe their parents meeting, Rose cocked her head and said, "Maybe. My mother would be willing to meet your dad. She's very flexible about a lot of stuff." It was true. Rose's mother thought she was antisocial and shy and wanted her to have good friends. Or any friends at all.

"Especially if it means you spending the night at my place," she said of the parents meeting. She only hoped her dad would behave. Sometimes he came across as a bit much. "It's got forests and rivers, an amazing garden with flowers of every color of the rainbow, and indoor and outdoor pools," yes, plural. Pools. "And a library and a ballroom." It could be a lot of fun especially with a friend.
Alina started thinking about some theme ideas already. She would make a list later and write them down, crossing out the ones that seemed rather lame. This had to be fun and if she could, she wanted it to be perfect. "I'll be sure to let you know ahead of time what the theme will be so you can start thinking about it, but I'll make sure to have it all prepared. I like planning things." She didn't know why.
"Oh, and I've got something else I've got to figure out. What would you say is one of your favorite things about magic? Magical creature, class, whatever." Alina was making end-of-the-year gifts for her friends and she certainly wanted to make sure she had one for Rose. Rose was becoming a great friend.

When Alina was describing her house, Rose noticed how rich she sounded. Would Alina be disappointed when she came to Rose's house, beautiful, but definitely below-average in terms of luxury? No, she wouldn't. Alina and Rose were friends, and friends didn't judge each other on how rich they were. At least, Rose told herself that. That didn't mean the feeling didn't go away. But she pushed it down, buried it with all of her other doubts about herself.
"That sounds so fun!" Rose replied sincerely, no trace of the tiny doubts that always haunted her. "Your house sounds so beautiful!" Rose looked up at the beautiful spring sky, a glint of mischief creeping into her emerald eyes. "I've never told anyone this, but though my house may not look like much, there's a secret way up on to the roof. I'm pretty sure my mom knows about it, but she hasn't said anything about it. There's a beautiful view of the sky from up there, but I've never been up there during the night. Maybe we could do that."
She had stayed up there for hours, reading a book or just looking at the sky, smirking at the shouts she heard from downstairs from her siblings looking for her. She was very skinny and could fit in places most other people couldn't, so her mom and her siblings had gotten used to her disappearing for hours, though they always found something to fight about that she would have to fix when she came back down. The roof was her escape from the world.
Alina asked Rose what her favorite thing about magic would be. Rose pondered it for a moment and then answered, "I don't know... If I had to choose, it would probably be a magical creature... either a kneazle, a phoenix, or a thestral. Why do you ask?"

"Oh, just sort of wondering," she said, brushing it off. She couldn't spoil any of her end-of-the-year surprise or it would ruin the entire YEAR! Okay, maybe a little dramatic but it probably would be something that would go through her brunette haired head of hers.
"I think your house sounds amazing. That's so fun, getting to go on the roof like that. I've never been to the roof at our house." And with her having siblings...family that actually looked for you when you were gone. That was something too.
Alina didn't have that. Weeks would go by without seeing her father or her grandmother. There was the hired help, her sister, and a huge estate. It might sound amazing but in reality it got lonely. Real lonely. "So our first theme could be like camping or enchanted forest or mermaids or something." She was just thinking quickly off the top of her head, not really making any definite plans just yet. "Really any sort of theme could be made into a good time." Or so she hoped. It wasn't like she was skilled either in the world of sleepovers.
"Say," something just occurred to her when Rose was talking about her house, "your accent. Where's that from exactly?" Hers confused people at times. It was mostly English but now and then there was still a lingering hint of French.

Though she was sure Alina wasn't letting something on about her favorite magical thing, Rose shrugged it off. A lot of people asked those kinds of questions just for small talk. "What would be your favorite magical... thing?" Rose asked in reply.
"Yeah, pretty much any theme would work," Rose answered. "I really don't care, so you can pick the first one."
Alina asked curiously about Rose's accent. Most people would know it came from America, but some had never been to America or heard an accent like Rose. Rose was very aware of her soft, American-accented voice as she replied, "My accent? It's American. My mom and her whole side of the family is American so I've been to America loads. My mom also speaks with the same accent at home so I probably picked it up from her mostly," Rose explained. "I have just always spoken like this, though I'm used to other people speaking in English or British accents and can do a pretty decent one if I need or want to." Alina had asked about her accent, so why couldn't Rose ask about Alina's? "And yours? Where is it from and why do you think you have it?"

"The little bit of oddness is probably my French coming through. We moved to England four years ago but even then, Bella and I had a lot of French au pairs and childminders."
She really wished she'd just pick one or the other and sort of wanted to stick with the English one since that's what most had, especially there at Hogwarts. She figured over time hers would diminish more and more until it was eventually gone.
"I don't know what my favorite thing is. I'm not really a fan of most magical creatures...I guess that's a little weird." It seemed like a lot of students there at school were. "I like bowtruckles, how they try and protect their homes, that's kinda cool....and I've looked into a bit on wandlore. I don't quite get how someone can make something out of wood and enchant it to be magical and work for another wizard. Then there's the whole business of wands being an extension of ourselves and that our wands work best for us and not others," she shrugged.
"But right now, what has perplexed me more than anything else this year is Hogwarts itself. I actually started a map...and I swear I'll go back to someplace and it'll have changed. Evolved." Almost like the castle itself was living.

Rose bobbed her head up an down in understanding. "That's so cool!"
"That's not weird. Your favorite thing doesnt' have to be a magical creature," Rose told Alina. "But bowtruckles are really cool. And a map of this place?" Rose's eyes widened. "This ginormous, gigantic place? That's a big commitment, but it will be so convenient once you're done. This place always seems to change, though, doesn't it? Always changing, always evolving. You can't trust it. And the castle strangely seems to like some people more than others, like it has a mind of its own... It's so strange." she smiled, just thinking about it.
Hogwarts was more than just a school to so many people. Houses were so much more than just houses. They decided who you went to classes and lunch with. They shaped who you were. They were your family.
Hogwarts was always changing. Always evolving. It was virtually impossible for one person to know every twist and turn, every secret, and every hall of this place. And that was just inside the castle. There was the grounds and the lake, the greenhouses and the forbidden forest.
Hogwarts was so much more than a school to so many people. It was a home.

The next day in the evening time, Alina waited for Rose after classes and supper. She had her present ready - all wrapped up in brown paper, tied off with some pretty ribbon. She hoped that Rose would like it. She had mentioned having a liking for kneazles.

While she waited for her friend, she wrote a little down in her notebook. These last few weeks were a little hard for her as she was not looking forward to leaving school. Still, she had to keep in mind that it was only for the summer and then she'd be back. They'd all be back.
Until then, she would have Bella and then she'd be seeing Rose over the summer, seeing Clifton, writing owls to others. It wasn't a goodbye it would just be a see-you-later sort of deal.
Glancing up from the words of her notebook she looked towards the Entrance for her red-headed friend. They would have fun together over the summer with the sleepovers, she was sure of it...even if she really had never been to or held a sleepover before. They sounded like so much fun, and she was glad to have a friend to share the experience with.

Rose walked across the vast Hogwarts grounds toward where she saw her friend, Alina sitting. She was looking forward to seeing her again. They had had good times the last time they met up. It was a nice day, with the warm sun and a gentle spring breeze, though it was weighed down by the creeping, inevitable knowledge that the school year would end soon. Rose had quickly changed out if her warm, black Gryffindor robes and into a red t-shirt and short Jean shorts. As she approached Alina, she was messing her fresh Dutch braid, tucking in escapees and fluffing it up. When she was close to Alina,
she saw she was journaling. She had the temptation to sneak up behind her and peek at what she was writing, but decided against it.
"Hey Alina," she said, sitting down next to her friend.
A feeling of guilt washed over her as she spied the cute package that Alina had seemingly carefully wrapped. "Is that for me?" she asked. Once Alina confirmed it, laughing and smiling at herself, Rose replied, "Aw, I didn't get you anything. I'm sorry."
She really hadn't expected to get any end of year gifts, so she hadn't thought about giving them out to other people. Maybe she would find something and give it to Alina on one of their sleepovers...
