Returning the Resident's Residue
Breathing heavily, even with her fitter-than-most physique, Ami finally made it up to the Headmaster's Office all the way from the Hufflepuff dorms on the first floor. Would it really be that hard to construct an elevator of some sort in this massive castle? Seriously, imagine the time that it would save, and all the convenience it would offer to kids, like her, who simply couldn't navigate the shifting stairs without almost dying at least twice a day. She made a mental note to ask one of the professors if she could construct a magical elevator system for extra credit... could she ask Lear? Wait, what was she here for, again? Right, the pygmy puffs.
Leaning against the wall just outside the door for a minute to catch her breath, Ami let her heart rate return to normal before trying to go over what to say to her former Head of House. He was a man who certainly knew how to leave lasting impressions on people, especially her. So much of her first year had been a result of his actions, no matter how obscure it may have seemed, but she supposed that he wouldn't remember. After all, she was just another red-headed Hufflepuff, and there seemed to be dozens of those running around. But, her personal problems didn't matter now- only the pygmy puffs mattered. How was she supposed to inform him that his successor, the exotic Professor Bonet, didn't approve of his furry little friends?
Gathering all the courage she had, which wasn't all that much, she stuck her head inside the door and looked around, checking to see if the doctor was in. There seemed to be some movement around the office, a sense of activity that Ami could feel emanating from the depths of the dark room, so she could only assume that Professor Lear was in his office. Running her finger along the strap of her bag nervously, she rapped sharply on the door twice before taking a cautiously hesitant step inside the office.
To her mother's surprise and relief, Ami had never actually been inside this office before. She generally steered clear of anyone with rather overwhelming amounts of power, especially someone who had the power and authority to kick her out of school. Causing enough trouble to make life interesting, but never enough to come into the gaze of someone as important as the Headmaster himself. But here she was, willingly showing her face once more to Headmaster Lear. She would just have to make this quick and painless, then.
"Hey, Professor..." she called out, stepping further into the office. Carefully, she lifted the strap of her messenger bag over her head, grabbing the bottom of the bag to make sure she didn't just drop all of his precious little puffles on the floor. "I've got, uh, some of your pygmy... puff... thingies."

Returning the Resident's Residue
A dim, warm flickering light could be seen beneath the door of his office. With the gentle rap by the hand of a one Ami Procoppio the door would swing inward and the ambient warmth of the headmaster's office would filter into the hall. Inside the office it was eerily quiet, yet the room was occupied. Solomon was in the office alone, that was now how he spent his days, isolated among the many living paintings that stared down at him in silence.
Solomon was always a large man, well large at least to a child but with each passing year he would get just a little bit smaller. The Professor was still larger than life in a good number of other ways, he always donned that same suit of armor. It was as if he was always prepared for a battle and for those that knew him, those that remembered him, they would know all too well that there was always a war with Professor Solomon Lear. Perhaps Solomon was the cause of the distress, those sleepless night and those night terrors that many of the students suffer from. Not the incendio they learned before they had learned the extinguishing charm or the fact that kids simply panic when in harm's way.
The time since his last days as Hufflepuffs Head of House and his ascension to Headmaster was rife with accusations, some of it might have even been true. Solomon resented Headmaster Blackburn for his role in the obfuscation of information he felt the students and their parents should have been made aware of regarding the mask and the glove. Since the student plagued with the mask was recovered, their memory a fog of those days except for flashes... moments of clarity, the wielder might never have be discovered and Solomon could take solace in the fact that without the mask there was no power in the glove. The students sent away 'to learn' were ultimately recovered. Most of their damages self-inflicted as always. Life went on, by the summer's end Solomon was the Headmaster and he had scarcely left his new office since.
"Hey, Professor..."
Ami would enter. "Ah, Miss Procoppio," Solomon would announce as he looked up from his papers on his desk. Yes, of course he remembered her name. He remembered every Hufflepuff that was under his care. "Come in, don't let the silence deter you," he added as he lifted his wand and made the shape of a flame with the tip. "Incendio," he announced as a jet of flame erupted from the tip of his wand and met with the hearth.
"Ah, I remember you," a voice from the other side of the room announced. "Just and true," a low chortle. "Like your sisters and brothers, all of the others." It was the sorting hat speaking in verse just a few feet away. The sorting hat never makes mistakes, a telling fact considering who was sorted into House Hufflepuff. What defined them was their 'loyalty' but this went deeper than simply being loyal to their house or even their friends, also their conviction. Last year they learned the true heart of their power in those trying time -- it was each other. Together they were more powerful than any one of them could be on their own.
Solomon wondered how much his students had grown. Ami had gotten taller. He would have said prettier too, but she was always pretty and soon enough he would be getting concerned that she might just be too pretty. Like a father dreading those teenage years, he let out an internal sigh.
"What has brought you here?" He inquired as he placed his quill on the desk and placed the cap on his inkwell.
"I've got, uh, some of your pygmy... puff... thingies."
She announced and Solomon's brow furrowed. Yes, his PygmyPuffskeins, a favorite in his former office. They were insistent on staying once Solomon was relocated. There was something about being near the students that the puffs seemed to enjoy. Of course it was likely the steady supply of boogies they offered, not that Professor Lear could blame them.
Solomon smiled, perhaps for the first time in weeks. He had a soft spot for those balls of fur. "Haha, of course you do..." he waved his hand "bring them out. Puffles like to roam!" Little did Solomon know that the Puffle infestation was simply being relocated to his new office not that the Professor would care. No, in this past year Solomon had forgotten a number of his passions. Since his role as Professor of Magical Creatures was handed off to another Professor and his old role as Head of House was also replaced, he found himself adrift.
If any of the puffles wiggled out of Ami's messenger bag Solomon would let out a sound of elation that betrayed his stoic and weathered appearance. "Greg!"

Returning the Resident's Residue
She would be lying if she said that Professor Lear didn't scare her. Of course, she was sure that other students were more scared of him than she was, and she knew that there were many who resented him, but there was a healthy dose of fear mixed in with her respect that made up her attitude towards the man. What surprised her, however, was that he remembered her name, and her last name, at that. Her last name, which was tripped over by many and deemed unpronounceable by some.
She jumped at the fire, still wary of the flames ever since her encounter with Eris and Dorian just behind the Groundkeeper's Hut. Even today, she kept a wide berth around the area where she had finally met her match, even if it had been two against one. Her eyes darting between the fire and the Headmaster in front of her, she barely even noticed when the flag on her bag started to fidget- clearly, the pygmy puffs wanted to be reunited with their rightful owner.
The other voice startled her even more. It sounded vaguely familiar... cornering the sound, she finally realized that it was the Sorting Hat talking to her. The Sorting Hat, who remembered everyone in excruciating detail, who had placed her in Hufflepuff because it was right for her, not because she thought that Gryffindor was overrated, that she was too dumb for Ravenclaw, and that she wasn't her mother. No, she was in Hufflepuff because she was fiercely loyal to her friends and her family, because she was just and couldn't stand inequality.
Pygmy puffs liked to roam? Glancing down at her bag guiltily, suddenly regretting her idea to stuff the poor pygmy puffs into her school bag, she let out a yelp of surprise as she saw a pink pygmy puff squirreling out of her bag. "I... Greg?" Ami repeated, completely baffled. "You named him Greg?" Shaking her head slightly, she crouched down and unbuckled the flag on her school bag completely, letting the other five pygmy puffs out into the open. Before they could all squirm away, she scooped one up in her hands, lifting it up to her face to examine. Earlier, she had only been completely focused on capturing all of the pygmy puffs, eradicating them from the Hufflepuff dormitory area. But now, she could truly appreciate just how adorable the little puffles were.
"There were so many of them..." Ami said quietly, shaking her head slightly as she set the pygmy puff back down on the ground. Standing up and crossing her arms over her stomach, she added, "How do you even take care of them all? There were twelve of them alone, just in the dorms... you must have, what, at least a hundred of them?"

Returning the Resident's Residue
Who could blame Ami for being scared of Solomon, he was an incredibly handsome and powerful man. Also, she and most Hufflepuffs were traumatized last year during his final year as Head of House Hufflepuff. He had his reasons of course, he never meant for anyone to get hurt. It was just that-- when these students had an incredible knack for nearly getting themselves killed and placing something dangerous or unusual in their proximity was like giving a toddler a metal fork near a power outlet and expecting nothing to go wrong. Everything went wrong. Everything always went wrong. A kid would not go where they were supposed to be, a student would try to light a dark room with fire, a student would start a fire in a dry forest. There was a lot of fire when it came to Hufflepuffs.
The hat remembered Ami, the hat remembered everyone and if the hat forgot a name or a face, it would never be admitted. There was a certain power that came with each house, a power that the students often overlook as they turn to prejudices and stereotypes. Being clever and wise does not mean that someone is good. Being brave does not make one a hero, sometimes a corpse and sometimes a gutsy villain. Being ambitious is not the prelude to becoming a Dark Lord, there is nothing wrong with aiming high. Being loyal to your friends can be seen as good as well as bad; being loyal to the wrong person could prove to be quite disastrous. Hufflepuffs are at their best when they are fighting for the sake of another, not themselves, it was in a way their uncanny superpower.
"I... Greg?"
The little ball of fluff would wiggle free and would tumble out. Pygmy Puffs are basically miniature Puffskein, cuddly little creatures that are primarily scavengers. They live off of small things such as spiders and left over food but their favorite meal is the boogies of sleeping wizard children. Their long tongue, many times longer than the length of their little, spherical body would simply shoot out like a frog and recover that scrupulous nugget from deep inside one's nasal cavity.
"You named him Greg?"
She asked surprised it would seem.
"I named all of them Greg," Solomon quipped. He was of course joking, that was the only Greg. He let out a laugh.
Ami would look into the little dark eyes of one of the Puffs as the Poffles scattered about the orffice space. Some wandered to the bookshelves and others behind the desk. They were hungry and they were hunting for spiders and flies. The Puff in Ami's hands would roll to the side a bit and let out a squeak, little did Ami know that was the Puff's battle cry and the Puff unleashed its' long tongue and attempted to recover a treat from Ami's nose. If successful, the tongue would retract back inside and the Puff would do a 'happy dance' leaving poor Ami in a confusing predicament. The Puff was incredibly, almost painfully cute but that was nasty.
"There were so many of them..."
Ami commented.
"How do you even take care of them all? There were twelve of them alone, just in the dorms... you must have, what, at least a hundred of them?"
"At least," Solomon confirmed. "Puffs are incredibly self-sufficient. They only need to things," Solomon claimed as he lifted his right hand and held up two fingers. "First," he lowered the second finger for a moment, "love. Puffs love to be loved, they like to cuddle and snuggle and will find a sleeping child and spend the night laid next to them. Second..." He raised his second finger again, "they really like boogars," he admitted. "They can get by eating spiders and flies, but their favorite thing is... well... boogies."

Returning the Resident's Residue
Okay. Greg. So all of them were named Greg, but in different tones of Greg? Like, angry Greg, sad Greg, ecstatic Greg, anxious Greg, and melancholy Greg? She supposed that this system sort of made it easier than trying to remember dozens and dozens of names, trying to differentiate between all of the pygmy puffs. Names of puffs on top of the names of all of the students? No wonder Lear just stuck to 'Greg'. She would've gone crazy if she had to remember that many names.
She examined the pygmy puff in her hand more closely, admiring the beautifully fluffy fur covering its spherical body. Obviously, she had no idea what the origin of pygmy puffs was, but that didn't mean that she couldn't appreciate them just as they were. Of course, what the Weasley twins had done for both the Puffskein and the pygmy puff was impressive, boosting their popularity amongst the younger generation, but Ami had never been one to appreciate revolutionaries.
The pygmy puff in her hand shot out its tongue, shooting into her- what was happening? Screaming, Ami dropped the pygmy puff, her eyes wide in complete disgust and horror. And she was, thinking innocently that they were simply little sentient pompom balls. "What the fuuuudge was that?" she yelled, glaring at Lear. Couldn't he at least have given her some sort of warning beforehand? After all, he used to be the Care of Magical Creatures professor. That was disgusting, and she didn't appreciate it at all. Ew. Ugh. Just the thought of it made her feel gross all over. What kind of monsters were these?
Ami almost gagged as Lear described the pygmy puffs' lifestyle. At least it explained what had just happened to her. "I- ew," she mumbled, shaking her head slightly. That was kind of disgusting, wasn't it? Just... eating... Ami couldn't even imagine that. "Yeah, I can see why Professor Bonet wouldn't want these guys around," she grumbled, checking to make sure she didn't have any more of the pygmy puffs left in her bag. "Alright, um... I guess I should get going. Bye, Professor." Glancing around the Headmaster's office on last time, hoping silently that she would never have to set foot in here again, she turned tail and fled as politely as possible.

Returning the Resident's Residue
Greg dug deep to find that delicious golden nugget, the preferred food source for their kind. With a grand slurp it was consumed. Ami appeared surprised, disgruntled even. Perhaps she was a heavy sleeper, most of these fluffballs hunt at night taking their prey at these unexpected, opportune moments.Sorry for my delay to waving you off as you flee. Some staff matters have occupied me these past several days.
-- Solomon
Ami left as abruptly as she had come but now the office was crawling with that BonBon considered a nuisance and a pest. However, Solomon could not be happier by their translocation. Pygmy Puffskeins were excellent hunters of insects and spiders, they were also excellent watch-creatures. They defended nothing but they would harmlessly swam those that entered and much like Ami for some strange and unknown reason they find disgust in these adorable little creatures and then flee. People are just weird.
"Welcome home Gregs," Solomon announced as they scurried about rolling about the floor and finding places to nest. Some cozied up to the sorting hat. A few nestled into the bookshelves and some found a home beneath the Headmaster's desk. With Ami gone, Solomon would passively pet one of the Pygmy Puffs while his other free hand resumed the paperwork he was engrossed in before Ami had entered. What a fine, yet strange little girl she was...
