Why. Were. Classes. So. Challenging.
Lea wasn't really willing to blame herself, still hesitating in accepting magic despite having learned how to cast a few spells. She was behind and it didn't help that more kept getting stacked on top of the late work. Her heart longed for her parents, the thought only making the sensation worsen as she padded through the corridors.
It was as she brought her hand up to touch one of her braids that she was reminded of something. Within her pack, she had kept a kindle. It was now crushed between textbooks, having been forgotten over the past two weeks. But kindles were resilient little devices, so the girl glanced up quickly to find a place to examine the device in piece.
The hufflepuff would slip into the abandoned toilets, quickly finding a place to set down her pack. It certainly wasn't the nicest place to go searching for memories of home and a way to cure homesickness, but it appeared to be empty. The first year would pause for a second, trying to see if she heard anything asides from the dripping faucets. It seemed empty. Her head would duck down as Lea rummaged through the backpack, finally grasping onto the kindle. Apparently her excitement was too much as the device slipped from her hands, sliding across the floor of the bathrooms.
It would slow, and finally stop, near the feet of another person. Another person- the realization startled her, glancing up quickly. When did they get here?

Sarah had just come out of History of Magic and was in a surprisingly chipper mood. Surprising only because she'd been adamant that today was going to be awful. On her way down to the Great Hall for breakfast this morning, she'd caught a couple of older students insulting one of the new first years. Mudblood. The word practically repulsed her, the years of blood prejudice held behind it was something she often found herself pondering. It was the use of that word which had practically forced her to get involved. She'd managed to keep her cool, walking up to the pair of bullies with an air of confidence she'd been practising since she was a child, and scolded them, simply stating that their bigoted opinions should be kept to themselves, before turning to the small Ravenclaw they'd been insulting and offering to walk her to the hall.
She was certain it would have put a damper on her day, but on her way out of her final class of the day, she'd seen the older boys apologising to the girl and hadn't been able to contain her happiness. It was too much to think that their views on muggle-borns had changed in those few hours, but it was something, and she felt at least partially responsible. And it was with a smile that she walked into the abandoned bathroom that she regularly visited. She enjoyed the quiet the room provided, and a place where she could practise her magic uninterrupted.
She walked to her usual spot, softly humming to herself without looking up, and threw her bag down to the ground. She loved Charms, and had planned on practising one she knew to be taught next year that she wanted to perfect before the end of the month. The Wind Charm had immediately intrigued Sarah; to have control over the elements fascinated her and she was desperate to give it a go. She brought out her wand and rested her textbook against the back of one to he old sinks. What a perfect book rest, she found herself thinking as went to open the large book, only to be stopped by a sudden noise.
Her eyes immediately shot to the side, honing in on the small black thing which was sliding towards her, wand at the ready. It stopped a few inches away from her. For a few moments, Sarah waited for it to do something, but when it didn't she cautiously bent down to pick it up. What in Merlin's name is it? She glanced upwards, just now seeing the other girl in the bathroom, looking at her with wide eyes. How did I not see an entire other person? Sarah scolded herself for her lack of awareness of her surroundings. This must be what her aunt meant when she was telling her to get her head out of the clouds.
"You dropped your..." Sarah started, walking closer to the girl to hand back her - whatever the item was. "Dropped your..." she tried again, eyes flicking back down to the object she was holding. "Sorry, I have absolutely no idea what this is," She admitted, slightly embarrassed, but her innate curiosity winning over as she handed the item back to the girl.

The first year would watch the other as they picked up the device, an odd fear holding her still. Perhaps it was just being an introvert, perhaps it was some guilt towards having distracted the other, or just a fear that she had done something wrong. Either way, the girl would remain by her backpack as the other walked over, cautiously taking back her kindle when it was handed over. A hushed, "thanks" would follow once the device was back in her possession.
Brown eyes would blink a few times, her face morphing into a confused expression when the other girl said they didn't what a kindle was. Sure, they weren't the most popular device, but they had been around long enough. Lea would quickly scan the older year's face to try and figure out if this was some sort of joke, but she found nothing.
"You- you- don't know what a, ah, a kindle is? Or just... an ebook reader?" The more vague term for it, perhaps a name that was a little more understandable? The hufflepuff would bring her attention back to the device, pressing the power button. The screen would flicker to life, illuminating her face and eyes before glitching and turning off. A small, disappointed would escape the twelve year old, glancing back up to the other student.
"I- I would sh-show you if I... could..." Lea would glance back down at the screen, not bothering to explain why. After all, wasn't it obvious why she couldn't show this person?

The Hufflepuff seemed nervous, something which most people seemed to be when they first met Sarah. Not that the Slytherin was surprised by it anymore. Apparently being a Pure-Blooded Slytherin, whose father was a relatively well-known blood-pursuit bigot, mixed with her sharp features and bright hair was enough to make her unapproachable. Still, despite it not surprising her anymore, she certainly didn't like it. If someone didn't like her, it would be because of her personality and that alone. She just had to prove people's initial thoughts wrong.
The girl's expression morphed into one of confusion, clearly not believable that someone wouldn't know what the device was. Had the girl not stuttered her way through her question, Sarah might have frowned, thinking the girl was mocking her. But looking at her face, she didn't seem mocking, just extremely surprised that Sarah was currently oblivious. Sarah offered her a small shrug. "I assume it's a muggle contraption," She said, eyes flicking between the device and the girl's face. Kindle, e-book, the words were so foreign to her.
Sarah watched as she pressed a button - the screen of the device momentarily flickering to life. It caused her eye's to widen. She had always been so curious about everything muggle, especially their electronics which wizards seemed to refuse to accept, and to see one up close was fascinating. Of course the device wouldn't actually work here within the castle. There was far too much magic running in the stone walls for the muggle device to function. It was something she'd learned when she was younger - electricity and magic just don't mix well. It had irritated her to no end, wanting to experience both forms of magic for herself.
"What does it do? The kindle?" She asked, testing the foreign word on her tongue. The girl had said 'e-book reader'. Perhaps the divide was like a mini library and stored books? The idea was wonderful, it would certainly stop people from having to lug round the large tomes the students here often had to carry. "Oh, I'm Sarah by the way," She said after a moments pause, offering a kind smile to the slightly smaller Hufflelpuf.

The girl would nod, flipping the device in her hands. She hadn't remembered what they had said about electronics before, trying to find some sort of way to open the back. Maybe it needed new batteries or something? The more likely option was that it needed to be charged, but Lea hadn't seen any sockets around. "Y- yeah, muggle." The word felt odd, a different label for a group that she had always felt apart of. It made sense, she supposed, to have the labels, but that didn't mean she was used to it.
"The.. the kindle? Oh, it-uhh- downloads books when-when connected to WiFi so that you can read books offline. It's, uh, more portable than bringing a ton of books ah-around." She would pause, a small smile appearing as she realized how little stammering had happened during that explanation. But it took a few moments longer to realize that the vocabulary used might still not make sense to the other student.
"Di- did that make sense or-or no?" After all, she didn't know how much this other person knew. Maybe she had some knowledge on this all or perhaps this was all new to her. Lea wouldn't really be the one to judge on that part- magic had taken a while to accept on her part.
"O-oh, um, Lea." She would offer a small smile in return, brown eyes glancing into Sarah's before ducking down to glance back at the electronic at hand. "H-have you been he-here a while?" Whatever here meant was not clarified as the first year ducked her head once more, this time to hide blushing. Why was talking so challenging at this school?
