The Serenade
Back at the beginning of the school year, Kazuo would never have considered doing what he was about to do. The rumours he’d heard were enough to warn him away from his target, being a seemingly rare wielder of common sense and a disdain for physical violence. Yet as months had passed and his information had grown, so too had his curiosity. Burnett, in specific, had entertained him with some very interesting stories that he found himself wanting to confirm.
Yet he was not so foolish as to approach the lion when he was with his pride. He’d heard enough to know that would likely end badly for him. If Burnett was to be believed - and he had no reason not to believe him - the lion had no qualms about drawing his housemates in to gang up on someone. That simply wouldn’t do, so he had eliminated the idea of approaching his target during dinner.
As this was clearly going to be an ambush, he needed to choose a location that was somewhat private and neutral territory. His first thought had been to seek out his target on the quidditch field but that was too much his territory. He didn’t want to be completely alone with the lion either, however, so he had settled on the small hall, a place both of them travelled through regularly.
He’d traded the school robes for something a bit less identifying, though for all its simplicity, the all-black outfit still spoke to his particular style, something most of the boys his age had little care for. Leaning casually against a wall, pretending to flip through a book, his eyes scanned students as they passed, waiting for that distinct combination of tanned skin and soft purple hair to appear. This was the first time he’d actually sought the other out and so when he finally spotted his target, he was surprised by the boy’s height. Only a year or so older, yet the Gryffindor was near a foot taller than him. Kazuo suspected that alone contributed to Rafael’s reputation.
He closed the book and pushed himself away from the wall as the lion prowled across the hall, taking a deep breath. Before he could reconsider the absolute foolishness of what he was about to do, he took a few steps toward Rafael and called to him.
“Deeeeh- spaaaa- cito~”
The name did not come out as a simple call, however. His voice rang clear across the small hall, his musical training apparent in the clear notes as he sang the Gryffindor’s name. What followed was somewhere between a blessing and a curse as Kazuo pressed forward with his terrible gambit. He began to sing That Song, the one that Rafael had no doubt been teased about before. The rhythm and pitch were good, even without accompaniment; Kazuo clearly had a good singing voice. Yet Kazuo’s grasp of English pronunciation was questionable at times so one could only imagine how absolutely awful his attempts at Spanish were. About this bad. Kazuo was more than aware of his failings yet he forged ahead with all the determination of a boy who had far too much confidence and far too little concern for his own safety.
