According to the books and legends of medieval times, there were three types of men: men of war, men of prayer, and men of work. See, that was all fine and dandy in the earlier centuries. There was no need for anything else, in the view of many great lords named Richard and Henry and George and whichever saint they'd like to name themselves after, but never share the virtues of. War was something that happened almost daily, work was required to make sure the fragile egos of whoever was king that time didn't crack, and prayer was required for the beliefs of their people. But times had changed from then, and there was a fourth division: men of science.

It was the perfect combination of all three. At the very least, the closest one could get to perfection. Science could be used for any of the three. Castles could not be built with weak cornerstones, and therefore architects were needed for measuring the sturdiness, which was physics. War would be nothing but loss without strategists, which required observing the enemy. Prayer was a bit of a gray space, since it wasn't science at all. It was prayer that Leonard needed to work on, and by extension, magic.

Magic was not science. It was inexplicable by any law of the scientists, and consequently wasn't supposed to exist. And yet, it did. You could levitate objects with a flick and a word, and summon creatures that represented your literal soul in order to drive away monsters that would like to eat your literal soul. You could make fire appear out of nowhere, and tame horse-eagles to fly on. In fact, the last symbolised something impossible. And yet, he was going to try and prove the science of magic anyways. There was a reason for the description 'mad scientist'.

He saw a boy in blue robes, walking down the hallway. Brilliant. While his previous encounters with Ravenclaws had ended in nothing but disappointment and swearing of vengeance. No matter, he was willing to try again. Besides, he didn't recognise the boy, which decreased the possibility of an old enemy by a few pegs. There was always a chance, however. Leonard could be rude both when he wanted to, and when he didn't want to. He considered it a talent of sorts. Come to think of it, that was probably why he didn't have any friends.

"Hello, there!" He said to the boy, who had reddish-brown hair, he could now see. "You look like a smart lad. Would you like to help me prove the existence of magic with science? As in, making a wizard theory of everything. I'll give you twenty-four cookies, and one pie of any flavour, for free. I’ll also throw in one of these,” he pointed to his tee. A science pun, one that, unsurprisingly, most of the school hadn’t appreciated. Sulphur, argon, calcium, and samarium were the primary elements of humour, after all. He was just wearing the truth on his shirt.

Robert walked down the hall, lost in thought. He'd only been at Hogwarts for about a day and none of his classes had started yet. He also didn't really know his way around the castle, and was therefore probably more than a bit lost. Oh well, if worst comes to worst, I can just ask some of these paintings where I am, he thought. This brought to mind a couple hundred more questions about how paint on a canvas can be sentient enough to give him direction. "What, do I have something on my face?" asked a painting of a woman wearing a blue hat, making Robert realize he was staring. The lady produced a mirror from somewhere and proceeded to examine her face, making Robert even more confused. Shaking his head a bit, he kept walking.

"Hello there! You look like a smart lad. Would you like to help me prove the existence of magic with science? As in, making a wizard theory of everything," said someone. Huh, that sounds fun, Robert thought. Too bad he's not talking to me, I'd definitely be interested! Robert looked up and saw a boy looking at him. The first thing he noticed about him was the fact that, unlike the other people in the hall who were wearing wizarding robes, this boy was wearing a shirt that spelled out "Sarcasm" in elements from the periodic table. The boy went on to say, "I'll give you twenty-four cookies, and one pie of any flavour, for free. I’ll also throw in one of these," pointing to his shirt. Robert realized with a start that the boy was in fact talking to him, and blurted out, "but where did the mirror come from?" before realizing what he was saying. "I mean, yes please?" Robert finally got a hold of himself. "Sorry about that. I would love to come up with a wizarding theory of everything with you. It's going to take some Germanium, Nickel, Uranium, and Sulfer, but I think we can do it. I'm Robert, by the way," he said, reaching out a hand to shake.

Leonard smiled. Just his type. A lover of science puns, a scientist himself, and living a bit in cloud cuckoo land. If the world were to be taken over and revolutionised, there was no better pair.

Indeed, we’ll need some genius, and you seem perfect for that role,” he said, shaking the other’s hand with slightly more enthusiasm then need be. Really, this was the most successful endeavour he’d ever had. Who’d have known that normal conversations were harder than finding the master theory. “Name’s Leonard.

He brought out a notebook, bound in leather. He fleetingly hoped that his handwriting was clear enough. Fleetingly because it most definitely wasn’t.

If they were to get started, they were to get started immediately. The reason why philosophers failed, Leonard believed, was not only due to the fact they were seeking something much more impossible than the master theory. It was also because ninety-four per cent of them were old men. How were they supposed to ponder on the meaning of life when theirs could’ve ended in cardiac arrest at any minute?

Alright, first off, thank you. I’ll be needing to get your address, to send all that stuff to,” he said, flipping to the pages. Curse the non-stickiness of wizard binders. Magic wasn’t the solution to most things, and that included school supplies that weren’t wands and dissected beatles. “You can write it later. I say we start with the easiest to do: potions. Thoughts?

The boy smiled a smile that would have made another person quite worried he was mad. However, Robert recognized it as the smile of a scientist who couldn't wait to start dissecting the universe and figure out how it worked! Okay, maybe that does sound kind of mad, but Robert had seen that smile many times on his father's face, and was quite used to it by this point.

"Indeed, we’ll need some genius, and you seem perfect for that role. Name’s Leonard," said the boy, seizing Robert's hand and giving it a good shake. Leonard pulled out a notebook and started flipping through it. "Alright, first off, thank you. I’ll be needing to get your address, to send all that stuff to. You can write it later. I say we start with the easiest to do: potions. Thoughts?"

Robert was glad that he didn't have to write out his parent's address at the moment. His hand was still a bit shaky from that handshake, which would have made his already messy scrawl near incomprehensible. "You can probably just send the stuff to the Ravenclaw common room. My last name's Toukmond, if you want to label it."

Robert then channeled his inner dad as he answered Leonard's next question. "If we're going to do this, we're going to do it right. That means first, clearly identifying what we are trying to do. Saying we're going to find a 'magical theory of everything' is all well and good until you realize that it doesn't actually mean anything. We then have to figure out what magic actually is. After all, someone once said that magic is just science we don't understand. THEN we can figure out what properties this so called 'magic' has, including how it makes potions do... um... stuff."

Robert trailed off a bit at the end. He'd only been at Hogwarts for a day, how was he supposed to know what different potions do? Robert awkwardly tried to push up glasses he wasn't wearing as he waited for Leonard's response.

Leonard was not so socially inept, not as much as his previous conversations with other actual human beings. However, when it came to comparison with a duck-horse hybrid, there was no questioning who had more friends. Clue: it was not the human.

Once again looking from the completely objective views of every person he’d been in contact with prior, there were several aspects of his personality he was to improve on. The most evident of which was tact. If there were a possible scale on which his sensitivity to human emotion could be measured, the duck-horse hybrid would still win by a long shot.

Of course, this was all in theory. And, as he’d learned in ways he’d rather not have repeated, theories were not always as real life happened. People were not chemicals. They were unpredictable, and new information about them seemed to come every second and a half. Sometimes, it was multiple little tidbits, as was the case with Robert. First, his last name. While it was not something really of importance, it could've been. While Leonard would not consider himself a stalker, he would also not consider himself rude or evasive, so his opinion was to be taken with a shaker or two of salt, as was the previous statement of not being a stalker. There could be some very intense nights full of web searches. Second, as well as the reason of his embarrassment, was that the redhead was new. Presumably, since it was either that or just really bad at Potions. The latter was significantly less believable, since someone who'd been in Ravenclaw as well as taking classes would probably be able to say more than 'stuff' when it came to alchemy.

"Actually, maybe we should backtrack. My last name is Oaksworth, if you wish to send anything to me. Weird, I know. I think it's Gaelic or something, but I can't really remember," he said, putting the notebook back in his pocket. Maybe next time. “I’m a second year here. What about you?

"Actually, maybe we should backtrack. My last name is Oaksworth, if you wish to send anything to me," said Leonard as he put away his notebook. Robert was a bit relieved to learn this. The inevitable research that always followed meeting a new person for him was a lot easier if you had a last name. However, this feeling did not last long. “I’m a second year here. What about you?"

Robert froze. He had assumed the older Slytherin knew he was a first year, and just hadn't cared. Although, maybe he shouldn't have been too surprised. He had heard a couple times that he looked older than he really was, so that could have been the reason he'd still been singled out by Leonard. But now, Robert was a bit worried. This boy had seemed like a dream come true, what if he didn't want to work with Robert after realizing he still didn't actually know the first thing about magic?

Robert debated in his head about whether or not to lie about his age. With a sigh, he realized that nothing good would come of lying because eventually, Leonard would have to learn the truth. (The actual act of lying didn't bother him too much, especially as Robert didn't really think of himself as being only eleven years old.)

"I'm still a first year," he admitted. "But, even if I'm new to the wizarding world, I do have a lot of knowledge about science and math. That has to count for something, right? Anyway, I'm a quick learner, so as soon as I've actually gone to some classes, I'll know more about the magic side of things." Robert paused for a beat. "Can we still do this?" Robert was eager to get back to discussing the topic at hand, and really didn't want to see his age come in the way of this.

Leonard was a bit surprised when the redhead acknowledged his own year and age, though not put off his bout of recruitment. He didn't have much reason to discriminate against who he'd ask for help in a realistically futile experiment. There wouldn't be much of a difference, anyways, a year wouldn't hurt anyone. Besides, anybody above a year would intimidate him too much for him to do anything in order to further the research, and most his year probably wouldn't want a second encounter with him.

"No matter, Robert," he smiled, trying to assure the other that he wouldn't start running in the opposite direction just because of different dates of graduation. "Even in the world of magic science, maths, and common sense are important. I mean, alchemy and chemistry are similar as fraternal twins, really. Just different ingredients. Chemists got themselves sodium and oxides, us wizards got newt eyes and moon herbs."

He shrugged as the eagle detailed his skills of memorisation and ability to write it all down when exams came along. Though Leonard himself could be considered a scholar, it was only in the more muggle subjects he himself excelled. His table in Transfiguration had more burn marks than acceptable by any standard, and Charms papers were littered with crossed-out words after mistaking the goat-summoning spell for the dancing charm. Several times.

"It's not as though you'll need to learn about every single bit about magic right away. Truth be told, I'm not much of an expert about quite a bit of this stuff, and I've already been here a year. It's to be expected. I mean, in a school like this, I'm pretty sure it's impossible to get comfortable. Y'know, with all the explosions and elves and haunted bathrooms. Not what us muggles are used to."

Robert was quite relieved to learn that Leonard was not going to rescind his invitation just because of the Ravenclaw's age or lack of experience with magic. He was even more glad to learn that everything he'd spent the past eleven years of his life wouldn't suddenly become useless in the face of magic. He chuckled a bit at the Slytherin's comparison of alchemy and chemistry to fraternal twins. He actually knew from experience that fraternal twins can be as different as flour and salt, but he understood the point the second-year was trying to make.

The muggle-born's sweet relief was about to turn into a different feeling that was, if anything, sweeter. "W-wait, what? What explosions? There are haunted bathrooms here?" Surprisingly, this actually didn't make Robert nervous, but more excited and curious. He'd always had an overactive imagination as a child, reading all sorts of fantasy and science fiction novels. His parents used to read Tolkien to him every night, until he was old enough to continue the tradition by himself. However, he'd never really thought that any of it might be true. Hearing Leonard talk about all these exciting additions to the boarding school was literally a dream come true. Reading Lord of the Rings before bed had oftentimes resulted in vivid dreams of elves, dwarves, magic, and adventure.

Leonard grinned at the bout of excitement that came once the other learned of the phantoms in the lavatory and failed attempts at fire charms. He'd immediately taken a liking to the boy upon the first words exchanged, and as the other revealed more of his personality, the title of a pleasant person began to stick more and more.

"Well, truthfully, the haunted bathroom thing might just be a rumour. But you've been here long enough to probably encounter one of the ghosts. Every house has one, after all. It wouldn't be too out of place to have one of their hideouts be in the abandoned restroom. Perhaps our first experiment could be testing that out. Of course, we may have to stay after lights are out, and that would mean we'd need to avoid getting caught, but that's probably a project saved for later. Wouldn't want you getting in trouble this early in the school year."

"As for the explosions, it tends to happen if someone in class isn't paying attention when casting their spells. Charms might seem fun, but believe me, there's quite a bit of pressure to get it right, considering one mispronunciation could end with a donkey on your table rather than a dancing keychain. The previous owner of my table, for one, seemed to be fond of making these mistakes, with all the holes in the wood. Eh, you'll see soon enough."

"How about you tell me a little more about your experiences so far here at Hogwarts?" he said, bringing out the notebook again. "Any information is useful information, I've read before."

Robert nodded along as Leonard talked about the house ghosts, having already met the Grey Lady, the Ravenclaw ghost. However, she definitely didn't seem like the type of person to enjoy hanging out in a bathroom. The first-year was a bit troubled when Leonard mentioned possibly having to break the rules just to prove a hypothesis, but, as the Slytherin seemed okay with putting that off until later in the year, he decided it wasn't worth saying anything now.

The first-year saw Leonard take out his notebook again, and tried to think of something useful he could tell the older boy about his limited experiences at Hogwarts. "Well, I've only been here for about a day, but I've tried to use that time to get to know as much of the castle as I could. Erm, I saw the Giant Squid during the boat trip to the castle after someone fell in." Robert purposefully left out the fact that he still blamed himself for Elisabeth's unexpected dip in the lake. "Apparently, it's actually quite benign, it deposited her on the Professor's boat instead of eating her or something." Although, having seen the Ravenclaw and Slytherin Head of House, he wasn't quite sure whether or not being eaten would have been a better fate.

"What else..." Robert thought for a second. "Oh!" he exclaimed, remembering the incident that had happened just a few minutes ago. "I still don't really understand how the portraits here can talk and move. According to Gamp's Law, you can't create intelligence using magic, so how can the castle be lined with magical paintings of people with unique personalities and experiences?" Flushing, Robert realized that Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration and the Five Principle Exceptions probably was not something a first-year on their second day in the castle would know about. "I, er, already read through all of my textbooks, including Magical Theory."
