@Kaegen Deathmote
Usually Xailah wandered out because she felt like it. Now she left the cozy confines of her dorm room because she had to. She no longer had the pleasure of choosing whether or not she would stay in the warm embrace of her bed. No. She had fed an addiction and she kept feeding it. So now, she has no choice but to wander in the darkness. On days where she couldn't leave the crimson and gold room, she was often left to pace the space. The behavior kept her roommates up. She would eventually find a way out, she always did. There was always a way. Really the only thing that stood between her and freedom, was a window.
The window had been fixed, since the last time she had used it. She couldn't use it anyway now though, she was too tall. She wasn't as small as she was two years ago. Which was unfortunate- she could of course use her metamorph abilities to make herself smaller, but she couldn't quite get to a size where she would fit through a windowpane. So now everything was about timing. When she could leave, when she could go around a certain corner, when she could return. All whens, no hows, or whys. It was scary to think about the place she had put herself in. To think, that if she had gone to bed sooner- or even had someone around to just pretend that they cared for her well-being; if she had someone to walk with sooner, she wouldn't have had to spend so much time in her mind.
Schrödinger helped a lot though. If he had been sent to accompany her maybe a year ago though, she probably would have turned out alright by the time her third year came around. It's interesting to think about how the smallest things could change someone. -Xailah, can still be saved, she can still change. She isn't that far gone, but if we wait long enough she will be- because that little rat that lives inside her head isn't going away anytime soon. It will live there forever if it has to, gnawing away at the sensitive grey flesh. Slowly eating away at her reality.
It was nice out tonight. Not too warm, not too cold, the sweet and bitter smells of autumn wafting through the air. Mother Moon smiled down at Xailah, the silvery light from her radiant smile, illuminated the whole lake. There was no need for wandlight. Xailah didn't usually go near the lake at night, but tonight was special. Tonight would be the last time she would be able to see the fireflies that lived down by the lake. After tonight, the fireflies would be gone, and she would have to wait till next year to see them.
She padded along, with Schrödinger at her side; hidden in the shadows of dying trees. The unkempt grass licked, and grabbed at her boots. She wasn't dressed in her robes; she wore a nice black blouse with a simple necktie. To her, the blouse was much more comfortable than her robes. Whatever fabric the robes were made of, often irritated the sensitive skin on the back of her neck. "I don't know what Aurelias deal is with you." "Waow." "I know you were there first-" "Waaaaaow" "No, no , no! I'm not defending her actions-"
Could she understand cat? No. Was this a coping mechanism, so she could further understand why Aurelia disliked her cat? Yes. Schrödinger wasn't scary or anything- he was often annoying though. Maybe that was it. Allergies really weren't even a big deal, its not like Aurelia could die from allergies, so maybe she really just found the feline annoying. Then if Aurelia thought he was annoying, did that mean Eris and Rhea though he was annoying too? So what if they did? She pushed the thought to the side, so she could ponder it later.
Fireflies were truly magical, they could make a whole room light up if you had enough of them. There were at least a thousand flying around in this area alone. As soon as she spotted that first hovering, green light; her eyes dilated so only a small ring of yellow could be seen. She lunged at the mass of bugs, probably killing a few by accident- she was of course unaware of this, as any child would be. She grabbed one of the little glowing bugs, as she fell to the ground. "Look Schrödinger I caught one, I bet-" He didn't care, he was still pissed at Aurelia for stealing his bed.
He went over, only to pluck the small insect from her gloved hands, with his mouth. "No! Kitty, don't eat the bug!" She scrambled after her feline companion who was being an absolute ass at the moment. She caught him by the meat of his leg, and rolled him over onto his belly. "Ssspit it out Schrödinger!" He gulped. "-Ssspit it- did you just fucking ssswallow that thing?!" He mewled in response, before slipping from her grasp and running up a nearby tree. "Schrödinger, you're a weenie sometimes you know that?" That was her bug, and he had no right to take it from her and eat it. She sprinted over to the tree, a flock of fireflies following close behind her. "Don't you dare make me come up there, boy."

Kaegen was walking along the lake, the occasional shadow twitching oddly around him. It wasn't a lot, the temperature around the boy wasn't especially colder than it was anywhere else, his hate was content to simply simmer below the surface, and the shadows were mostly content to sit still. His soft footsteps eventually brought him to one of the few people who was even quieter than he was. The little creature-girl and her cat. He could see them chasing something, well, the creature-girl was chasing something. The cat didn't seem all that interested.
Or at least that's what he thought until the creature-girl actually managed to entrap the thing. Was it a bug? It was possible, but far more likely she had intercepted some secret message. He quickened his pace, only to slow back down in surprise when the creature-girl's thing was eaten by the cat. It had been glowing like the fireflies, but she had no reason to catch a firefly, they weren't exactly useful insects. They looked nice, he supposed, but that didn't account for much in the grand scheme of things.
The cat was briefly apprehended, but it then eluded the creature-girl's grasp, and fled up a tree. It was just a few seconds after that event that Kaegen actually managed to arrive at the scene, close enough to initiate interaction, anyway. He didn't get close enough to be hit, just in case the creature-girl whirled on him. He wasn't scared of her, not really, but he was wary. She was a danger, but a danger he thought he knew of, so he found himself less apprehensive as he approached.
"Hello there. You're still in this school?"
It was a little surprising to see it still alive, and running about. He had imagined it would take the hint, and clear out of hogwarts while it yet lived. That was the hope, anyway. He didn't see the need for this creature-girl to die by the hands of some vindictive professor, instead of by one of it's own. Still, it was nice to see something familiar.

She wouldn't notice until later, that the fireflies had started doing strange things. Their once graceful dance, had turned into a weird and jagged one. They moved more like flies, than fireflies. This behavior was unusual. It was wrong. If it was an individual bug, the act would have most likely gone unnoticed- but this was not just one bug, this was a swarm of them. They weren't right.
Xailah was more concerned about getting Schrödinger out of that tree, if anything. Fat cats and trees were just two things that didn't go well together- like orange juice and toothpaste, or forks and power outlets. Once, around the time she first got her companion, he had climbed into a tree on the grounds of the Alptraum estate. He was a bit tubbier then, and he had got stuck between a couple of thin branches.
She was going to have to retrieve him before she went back to the dorms. Of course, Aurelia would have probably considered Xailah returning without the animal, as an answered prayer. It was then, she noticed the unnatural movement of the fireflies. Something was approaching. She shifted, hair writhing, the black of her pupils hidden by an iridescent sheen. She turned to see Kaegen.
"Oh. Hallo." She didn't expect to find him here- well, him to find her here. It had been awhile since they had last spoke, and she had forgotten that he still went here. She stood in silence before answering his question. "Well, yes. I can't just up and leave when I feel like it. My family would be disappointed with me." She lived to please her family. One of her greatest fears, was letting them down. She had no reason to feel the way that she did, but she just couldn't help it. She felt like they expected so much from her. So, she couldn't leave, because of that fear, and one other thing- she was on the hunt for someone.
"How did you find me? Were you looking or, was I found by chance?" If he could find her, then that meant that other things could too. Things that she was scared of. Things like a certain Half-Giant. She turned away from Kaegen momentarily, her entire upper body reached towards the sky. Schrödinger was just out of reach. He had found that happy spot, where he was just out of the way of being grabbed.

"Your family?"
So not a creature? Families were superfluous, they were unnecessary, they dragged you down. That was the law of the monsters, of the beasts and the fens. Surely she knew of that unspoken law, the facts of life that somehow permeated everything but man? Kaegen's eyes narrowed ever so slightly for the merest fraction of a second before returning to the tired state that somehow passed for normal. This did make him more suspicious, but not enough for him to entirely abandon his previous assumption. She could still be a creature, nothing said that she wasn't one. They just hinted in that direction.
"I'm here, and so are you."
It was about as ambiguous an answer as he could muster. Kaegen was learning to not answer as explicitly as he used to. Mostly because he was too tired to, too tired to bother with answering properly, better to just mumble something that made some sort of sense, and then move on.
"I didn't think you'd survive this long..."
He didn't feel much hate, not then. He felt cold, if anything. He always felt cold, in one way or another, but this girl was as normal a person as kae had met, at least by his standards. It made him drop his guard ever so slightly. And when that happened, he noticed things not only about his surroundings, but himself as well. This girl-creature and her cat both, they hadn't died, they had survived this long. They were like him, in a way. Survivors.
"Do you live in my world, or theirs."
He asked that last question as an afterthought, to test a theory of his. So many of the other students should have died, but hadn't. And so many students that he thought would survive had vanished. There was something else at play, and he had a feeling it had something to do with the worlds. Maybe ignorance protected them, maybe they didn't need to fight.

"Fair enough." So by chance. Chance was the only reason as to why they both stood here on this silent night. Chance was the only reason why they were both in existence. This bothered her. Because if this boy could stumble upon her by chance. Then anyone could. He could. And she definitely didn't want him to stumble upon her by chance. She would make sure that she would be harder to find next time.
"-And yes family. Everyone has one- or at least ssstarted out with one. You have one, don't you?" Did Kaegen not have a family? That must be unfortunate. She couldn't imagine a life without her family. They gave her everything. They tried to keep her safe from the outside world. She owed them so much- well thats how she saw it. Even if they left home often on business trips, they always came back with warm hugs and new things. She owed them everything.
She took a few steps back to get some distance between her and the tree. She was unsure as to whether or not she should have taken offence to Kaegens comment. Did he see her as weak? Did he think that she was going to just up and die? But it made her laugh. "Aha! You thought I wasn't going to sssurvive? Do you see me as weak? Do not underestimate me Kaegen Deathmote. Never underestimate me." A toothy little grin began to spread across her pale face.
She then took a running leap. Scaling the tree proved to be a challenge, due to the bark having no grip, and the fact that she was wearing gloves. But she made it, using what little body-strength she had. The branch Schrödinger was sitting in was a weak and brittle one. It would not hold her body weight. "Damn it."
She got the feeling that Kaegen was not talking about the magic and muggle world- considering he used the term 'my'. "I live." She said with a shrug. "At the end of the day, thats really all that matters isn't it? Not where or why. Make of that what you will." She added calmly. She didn't really like his questions. Mostly because she found that his questions did not have right, or wrong answers.
"Kaegen, come over here. I'm going to drop him to you." She had moved to a stronger branch that was above the cat. She could reach down far enough to grab him, by his middle. "He's a little heavy." And by little, she meant he was 20 pounds of fat and fur. He wasn't little by any means. Schrödinger squirmed and mewled with resentment. She could have dropped him, but he would not have had time to orient himself to land on his feet. Besides, he wasn't the most graceful creature in existence.

That bothered him. Why had she asked that question to begin with, only to end in resignation with a 'fair enough'. Why did she want to know how he had found her, was she hiding from something? Stupid question, of course she was. But it did reassure him that she was at least keeping somewhat track of what was moving around her. For someone who didn't want to leave the school because of something as trivial as blood relations, she wasn't stupid.
"No. I don't need them."
There was a pause, and a brief narrowing of glowing, calculating eyes.
"You don't need yours either."
His eyes didn't narrow in response to her laugh, rather, they raised, just a little. Most of Kaegen's reaction lay somewhere in his eyes, his mouth not really doing much in the ways of smiling, except in rare occasions. She thought it was funny that he thought she was going to perish? That meant that his idea was laughable, or false, didn't it? Or maybe she was just stupid.
"Why not. Why shouldn't I underestimate specifically you. You're all weak, coming and going like little sparks. You aren't quite the same, but the twisted grass is still felled by the scythe."
Kaegen's eyes winced as the creature struggled to climb the tree. Surprisingly graceful, if labored. She, or it, or whatever, was after the cat, clearly, and didn't want to climb out on the limb for fear of it snapping. That made sense, seemed to be a wise decision. Her answer made more sense to him than perhaps it was supposed to. She faded in and out of worlds, then. She didn't belong to any world, but rather was a visitor in all of them. That was probably why she survived so long.
"Clouds can hide the sun, but not it's light. I don-"
His dry voice cut off when the girl told him to get ready to catch the cat. He liked Shrodinger, to the point that he even somewhat remembered the cat's name, so this was a task that Kaegen was pleased to help with. He walked forward, looked up at the cat, immediately panicked, turned around suddenly, to find nothing, and then returned to his previous position holding out his arms.

What was that? What had she witnessed? Was it fear? Perhaps he had panicked? What the corpse-like child had just done, confused her. Questions sprung up, and had begun to run around in her head. Did he think she was going to hurt him? Did he think that Schrödinger would hurt him? Did the think he was going to get hurt? "What?" It was more of a statement than a question.
She didn't know if she should reassure him or not. This was the first time she had seen someone react in such a way. "He's not going to hurt you- grab him by the ssscruff of his neck, but support his bottom. He'll go limp." She didn't like to scruff Schrödinger, for she imagined that it was rather uncomfortable. Maybe even embarrassing for the feline. She lowered the mass of fur to Kaegen, and let him go- regardless of whether or not he was ready to grab the cat.
She trusted that he was ready to grab him. She could be wrong. Maybe at the last second he would bail, and let the large cat fall to the ground. Whatever the case may be, Xailah would be there to scoop up her beloved companion. She squeezed the cat tightly, happy to have him back in her arms. "Next, time I leave you up there." She whispered between squeezes.
"Why did you do that? That uh...flinch?" Was that the right word? Flinch? Did Kaegen flinch? She wasn't too sure. Her vision during that time was partially obscured due to the massive cat in her way. It was a flinch of sorts, from what she could tell. "Why did you flinch?" The question was obviously directed at the boy, yet her focus remained on the fuzzy creature in her arms.

The cat hit Kaegen's outstretched arms, and immediately he crumpled like a wet matchstick. The ravenclaw provided virtually no resistance, he was like a napkin, blown and buffeted about, only to crumple as the fat cat softly hit. It wasn't even an impact worth speaking about, in fact, it was almost ridiculous how easily his legs seemed to melt beneath him. He slipped out from under the cat just a bit before the girl climbed down the tree to pick up her pet. The cat, of course, was fine. Kaegen's crumpling had slowed his fall, and even if it hadn't, shrodinger probably would have made away without major trauma.
"I thought for a second you might be using your cat to distract me, so that... well, I was wrong this time."
Kaegen took a step back, considering.
"Flinching is too indecisive. It's your body telling you something, and it's you ignoring your body. Your eyes know more than your mind does, so why trust your mind to be able to keep up?"
Kaegen stopped, then, stopped virtually everything. Blinking, breathing, moving. A thought had occurred to him, and it had frozen him in place like a deer staring down a set of headlights.
"You're no monster. You walk the between, don't you. That's why you wanted to know if I'd tracked you down. You wanted to see if you'd slipped."

"Distract you?" She shot the boy an awkward side glance. "Did you...think I was going to hurt you?" She inquired. "I have no intention to harm you. I gain nothing from doing so." She stated with a shrug. "If I wanted to physically hurt you, I would have done so in the bathrooms. It was a closed in ssspace, there was nowhere to run- it would have taken a sssecond to open the door, a sssecond is really all anyone ever needs..." She ran her thin fingers through Schrödingers thick grey fur.
"Besides, clean up would have been easy." She rolled her eyes in response to Kaegen stepping back. He was quite ridiculous. Who hurt you? The question echoed in the back of her head. Who hurt you? She pursed her lips, contemplating Kaegens next comment. "Because your mind is all you have. When your eyes are rendered useless, what do you do?" She rose an inquiring eyebrow. "Your eyes are bound to deceive you, at least once in your lifetime."
She glossed over him with a metallic gaze. Kaegen, was a funny little thing. Some of what he said made perfect sense, even if it wasn't meant to. His way of conversing; his way of questioning, was so similar to that of anyone else. He just replaced common vocabulary with the vocabulary he was familiar with. She did walk this 'in between'. She was an animal, born into civilization. She wore the clothes of a noble; the clothes of a civilized human- but that didn't change the fact that she was a literal freak of nature.
Her nostrils flared, her teeth chattered. She nodded slightly, unsure if she should respond with a positive answer. "If thats what you call it...but theres more to it than just that." Her eyes wandered; she was looking at her surroundings without actually seeing them. "There are people that I don't want finding me. I don't want them to ever find me by chance, like you did. I hurt one of them badly when I last saw them. I don't want to think of what they might do if they happened to ssstumbled upon me."
Her eyebrows began to knit together into an expression of concern, as she decided that it was time to leave. "I think I ssshould go now-" She readjusted the cat in her arms. "...I wanted to see the fireflies. They're pretty. Reminds me of home." She would leave him with the answer to a question, that he never asked. With a wave, she would walk off to join the shadows. "Tatty-bye."

"Why does the need to hurt someone have to be restricted to the confines of logic? Emotions are seldom logical, the need to hunt doesn't have to follow guidelines. Just because someone hasn't attacked me yet doesn't mean they're not going to. This School is full of monsters. You're different, to be sure. Close enough to the paths I walk to be able to see some of it, but that doesn't exclude you"
He coughed dryly into his sleeve, the pained coughing of someone who was trying desperately not to.
"There's more than just a mind, there must be something else. Like a wrench, I think. Cobwebs inside you, moss growing over what was."
He did find it odd how she seemed to talk like anyone else. Besides her occasional odd accent, what she said fit in with what he had heard before. It came from a perspective that was not his own, it came from someone who walked other paths, who belonged to their world. There was just barely enough different to make him not forsake his original conclusions. That, and her behavior. Her behavior was certainly not from them. It was this conflict that made him think her as something who walked the line. And it was her comment earlier that made him wonder if she really could kill. Of course a moment was all anyone needed, was she pointing that out for his benefit? And if so, why? She knew how well versed he was in fighting, didn't she?
"Wouldn't be hard for them to find you using the class schedule. Only so many Gryffindor classes per hour, it wouldn't take long."
Kaegen blinked. Was she going to die, then? Was that it? He noticed her starting to move towards the castle, and was about to do the same, when the cursed words began to float through his head again and again. The same words that had haunted him ever since the little Gryffindor burned them into his mind. "You may be strong, but you are feared. You may be big, but your soul is ugly. You may be powerful, but your end will still come- and when it does, you will be sad. Sad, scared, and alone."
She was the closest thing he had found to someone who could see what he did. She was the closest anyone had ever come to seeing his world, to knowing what was there. She couldn't see it all, couldn't understand it all. She was similar to the humans around him, to their world as well. But she was the closest thing he was ever going to get. She was the closest thing to someone he could relate to. A little spark shining it's way to where Kaegen was sitting by himself in a world of fear and monsters.
"Wait one moment. Please. Do you know how to fly?"
It was almost nothing, it was practically useless, it was small. It was nothing but knowledge, but it was something. It was something he could give to see if the spark would last a little longer, it was something he could do to tell himself that he cared enough to act, that he wouldn't just let everyone die. It was a confirmation to himself that he didn't see everyone as meat. He was a monster, a demon, he knew. But he didn't have to die alone, sad and scared and cold. He could fend off the voice.
