A Day by the Lake
The Great Lake was definitely Sabrina's favourite place in the Hogwarts area. She hated swimming, despised it really, but sitting on the grass nearby wasn't much of a problem. She had made plans with her friend from back home in Derby, Reid, for the first time in about three weeks. She had started to miss him. Sure, her dormitory was great - part from the one girl, Juliana, oh how Sabrina disliked her - but nothing compared to how it was when she was around her best friend. She picked a few pieces of grass out of the earth as she thought about the last time they had spent time together, shopping in Diagon Alley. It really had been a while, hadn't it?
She looked up from where she was picking grass to the subtle waves that made up the Great Lake. The water was a dark colour, but that could be because it was a cloudy day, and there wasn't any sun to reflect off of the water. She pursed her lips slightly - was it bad that she missed the sun? Any weather was fine with her, but she couldn't help favouring the sun. She looked towards the school again. How much longer would Reid be? She hoped he wouldn't be too long, she could fall asleep.
She leaned back against the tree that was behind her, stretching out her legs in front of her. She didn't like wearing skirts, but still preferred them to baggy trousers. She also wore her Gryffindor sweater vest and robes, covering up the majority of the rest of her outfit. Not that she minded, she'd rather be seen in her robes than in a skirt. Not that there was much difference. She crossed one of her legs over the other, leaning her head against the trunk of the tree as well, looking up into the branches. In some spots, she could see the cloudy sky, but for the most part just leaves and branches. She heaved out a sigh, only looking back towards the castle when she heard footsteps.

A Day by the Lake
Reid had begun to miss Sabrina in the first week, by the second week he was hoping to hear anything, and then by the third week he had begun to feel quite down. He imagined that she was busy, perhaps she had a lot of homework already and was bogged down. His dorm room was empty for the most part of the day, it's left him with a lot of room to just mess around. He was glad that he met the others, but he still missed the redhead.
Reid saw she was sorted into Gryffindor, the red accented her hair pretty well. But he had no doubt that she got the right house, he just wished he was in the same house. He liked the people in Huffepuff, but Sabrina gave that familiarity and comfort that he attributed to Derby. It was a hard three weeks but after hearing that Sabrina wanted to meet up, he didn't hesitate.
Reid was excited, partial to this event, he placed everything he had today on hold. But he didn't have much anyway. He wore his normal uniform, clean but still a little shoe scuffed. It got even more dirty as he trekked down towards the Great Lake as if he was on a warpath. When he saw the redhead from afar, he tried not to get too excited, it was hard being nonchalant.
Instead, he jogged up to where she was. "Sabby!" he called, nearly sliding from the loose dirt that shifted under him. His dress shoes weren't the best for this terrain. "I am ..." he grunted. Reid didn't hesitate to plop down beside the Gryffindor girl, he was nearly touching shoulder to shoulder with how close he was. "So glad to see you." He fixed the glasses on his collar and fixed himself, pulling his shoe close to him to tie it. "I missed you, it's been too long." Reid blatantly mused.

A Day by the Lake
Honestly, at first, Sabrina wasn't completely sure that the person running towards her was Reid. It could have been anyone - but once she heard his voice, he was sure that it was him. There wasn't a doubt about it. She would be able to pick his voice out of a crowd of a thousand people... but only if he was close by. Maybe more like, fifty people.
"Sabby!"
A giggle surpassed the red haired girl's lips as she watched Reid trek closer and closer to her. He looked quite awkward running with dress shoes on, but she didn't suppose they would be allowed to wear sneakers during school hours. She wished they could - she would much prefer them over the Mary Janes she wore that her mother bought her before she headed off to Platform 93/4.
"I am ..." She watched as he paused in the middle of his sentence to sit down next to her, a huge grin on her face. The feeling she got hanging out with her best friend was one unlike any other she felt while spending time with anyone else. "So glad to see you."
Sabrina nodded in agreement, "I am, too. I was almost suffocating in the amount of girls I had to talk to these past weeks." She groaned. She had been a little anti-social outside of her dorm, and the few people she did talk to happened to be girls. It was well-known by the girl's friends that she much preferred to steer clear of the trouble other girls seemed to bring, but apparently that was inevitable here.
"I missed you, it's been too long."
She nudged him slightly with her shoulder, which was already touching his, basically. She then proceeded to rest her head on that same shoulder, sighing quietly. "I missed you too, Reido," She grinned once again at her newly invented nickname for him. There was no way she would be giving that one up. "I wish we could hang out more. I just assumed you were busy, and didn't really want to interrupt anything you had going on." She mentioned, shrugging her shoulders slightly. The gesture of being in contact with him was a reassuring feeling in this case, one that made her feel like she wasn't alone. Which, when she was with Reid, was very true.
"How have things been though? Have you made any friends? How is Hufflepuff? Is everyone as nice as they say they are?" She shot out questions one after another, often a habit of her's. She was bad at the whole one question at a time thing, she much rather would have them answer all of them at once. She wondered if his dormitory was as odd as her's, or if he's made better friends than her - as interesting as that sounds.

A Day by the Lake
A throaty laugh came from the young man, relieved to hear from his fond friend. Her voice brought him back a little, a familiar to the world he's been living in so far. His mind wasn't fried, but it was certainly at a point of where he was ready to just relax. Reid had fallen behind on his studies a little since the incident, but he hung on. Moments like this, like with Dymphna, were the moments where he could stop and have some time to relax.
He had been high strung lately, worried and often frazzled with almost anything that bothered him. Of course he didn't lash out, but there were moments where he was ready to fall asleep. "Reido." he snickered. It was the first new nickname he's had in a while, he didn't even remember if he had one from Sabrina. It was endearing nonetheless. His reading glasses sat on the bridge of his nose, the wound on his forehead was now just a small dried cut. He would be tempted to grossly pick at the scab but didn't dare touch it after he ended up breaking skin the other day.
He didn't hesitate this closeness with his friend, it was a different relationship than some might assume from the outside. He held steady and still for his friend to lean on if she wanted, a little tired but happy nonetheless. "There's so much I haven't gotten to to tell you. But where do I even begin?" He sighed out of amusement and yawned slightly. He had good news and bad news, the bad news was one he was wasn't so reluctant to share. But he didn't want to just tell her some half hearted lie. "I met a few people, some from Hufflepuff but not a lot.
I made friends with a few people in Ravenclaw actually, I think you'd like them. Just recently there was this crazy accident I was in though." he mused. Reid picked grass with his free hand, he wasn't so frazzled by the event anymore. But just thinking about it was tiring. "I was out at night and one of the Prefects found me, but she got attacked by a huge spider! I mean this thing was probably medium size but it looked huge."
Reid broke some of the grass in his hand, his sweat covered hair loosely hanging from his hair. He smelled a little bit like wood, a scent picked up from his common room fireplace. It was an area he hung around the most. "Oh it's how I got this thing, isn't it cool?" Reid turned his head, lifting a bit of his hair to show the wound that was almost fully healed. He let his hair down to cover it again. If they had scars, Reid assumed that they would sit there trying to outdo each other. At least he would try to.

A Day by the Lake
The girl laughed a little bit as he repeated the nickname she had called him. "Hey, it's a great nickname!" She quickly defended, the grin prominent on her face. She felt so carefree when she was with her friend, it was such a relief. She had been buried in schoolwork, something she should be used to thanks to muggle school, but even in muggle school she seemed to fall behind. Perhaps she should start trying harder - but that would mean even less time with Reid. If anything, all she wanted to do was hang out with him more. She missed him.
"There's so much I haven't gotten to to tell you. But where do I even begin?"
She pondered the question, wrapping one of her arms around one of his that was closer to her, pursing her lips slightly. She was going to answer with 'How about my first question?' sarcastically, of course, but he beat her to it. It was probably a rhetorical question anyways, but really she didn't know the difference.
"I met a few people, some from Hufflepuff but not a lot. I made friends with a few people in Ravenclaw actually, I think you'd like them. Just recently there was this crazy accident I was in though." Sabrina rose an eyebrow at Reid, wanting to know more. She looked from the lake in front of them up to his face, showing that she was paying attention. "I was out at night and one of the Prefects found me, but she got attacked by a huge spider! I mean this thing was probably medium size but it looked huge."
Her eyebrows then shot up in surprise. A huge spider? How huge? Usually when people say 'huge spiders' they mean tarantulas, or wolf spiders, but were those really that dangerous? If you don't count the venom, at least. "What kind of spider was it?" She asked curiously, proceeding to move her legs over top of Reid's. When she was sitting, she tended to just kind of.. glomp people in a way. She wasn't very much of a 'keep your hands to yourself' kind of person. She didn't know the definition of physical boundaries when it came to people she trusted.
"Oh it's how I got this thing, isn't it cool?"
Sabrina watched as he pulled up the hair that fell into his face to reveal a scratch. According to him, it must have been from the whole spider incident. Either, he and the person he was with were really terrified of spiders and scratched themselves up running from a tarantula, or the spider was really a nuisance.
"It is," She agreed, amused. She then leaned her head back on his shoulder to look out at the lake again. She could probably do this for another hour or two before she got bored and needed to do something. Which was a pretty good amount of time, for simply staring out at the lake. She sighed softly, "But it's sad that you hurt yourself. Did it hurt much?" She questioned, curious. She personally didn't get hurt easily - physically - so she didn't have to worry as much about herself. Then again, she also didn't get chased by some sort of spider that scratches people.

A Day by the Lake
Reid was going to lie and say that he was fine. He took that branch like a champ and didn't cry later. But it was quite the opposite, in fact he had gone back to his dorm to sleep and that was when he cried. It wasn't one of his prouder moments but he always had a certain lack of discretion with Sabrina, he trusted her with it after all.
"Yeah it hurt, I cried at night." he snickered, shifting himself. Reid moved so she had a move comfortable way to sit, draping his arm in a manner that wouldn't be too uncomfortable. The height difference helped him ensure there was actually enough space for her to rest her head. He didn't think of her laying on him was anything but normal, it was normal to what he did in Derby.
It wasn't with anyone else though, he was more comfortable with Sabrina, some would say a little too comfortable. There was a certain wavelength that he was on with the redhead and she was the only one who was truly there. It was a platonic affection, one he didn't think he'd find with anyone at all. Everyone was worried about cooties and being grossed out, yet growing up with someone for so long somehow transcended his doubts.
He had made an unconscious promise to be there for her, one he didn't think he'd ever break. He sniffed slightly, she didn't smell any different from the bed of grass they sat on. It smelled something close to flowers, he didn't have enough knowledge to know which one it was though. He yawned loudly, rubbing his eyes afterwards. "How is Gryffindor? I wasn't that surprised to see you sorted into it, you're always so gutsy."
Reid placed his hand back down, looking down at the Hurst girl. "You sound like you're having so much fun with the girls in your dormitory though." he teased. The boy poked at her side once or twice. "How are you liking Hogwarts so far if that's the case?" Reid wanted to know how she was adjusting, if she was adjusting. He had forced himself to be accustomed so far, but he had a part of the whole experience missing. But that wasn't the case anymore, at least not right now.

A Day by the Lake
A small breath of air escaped the redhead's petite frame. This heaved her chest slightly, causing it to basically deflate. It was as though all her current stresses fell right off of her shoulders when she was with Reid. Not that there was much for an eleven year old to get stressed about, but Sabrina sure as hell felt a lot better sitting there next to her best friend than she had sitting alone just a little while ago. This was just so much better. She smiled a little bit when he admitted to crying about the scratch he had gotten. At this, she kissed her fingers, then looked up to see him. She lifted her arm to press her fingertips - and the 'kiss' on them - onto his cut. "Feel better, loser."
She settled back into her previous position, with her head on his shoulder, and slightly adjusted herself so that she was basically burrowed into the boy's side. Any onlooker would think that they were too young to be dating - but that was the thing. The best part. They were just amazing friends, and she hoped that absolutely nothing would change that. She wouldn't exactly be happy if it did change. What if Reid hated her one day? Err, best not to think about that right now.
"How is Gryffindor? I wasn't that surprised to see you sorted into it, you're always so gutsy."
Sabrina laughed breathily, before shrugging her small shoulders up. "It's alright, I guess. I don't like one of the girls in my dorm, though. She's quite the bother.. I heard she tried to pull a prank on us in the first two days. Who does that? And oh my god, she is the rudest being in all of Hogwarts. How am I supposed to pretend to be nice to her?" She groaned, closing her eyes as she buried her face into Reid's shoulder rather than leaning her head on his shoulder now.
"You sound like you're having so much fun with the girls in your dormitory though."
This made her roll her eyes at Reid, like most anything else. He was silly, and thus she rolled her eyes playfully at most things he said. "Yeah, I do, just.. not that one girl." She grumbled, obviously slightly bothered by the fact that anyone would even have the audacity to be so rude the first time they meet someone. She warned the girl that she didn't want to make enemies - and honestly, especially with Sabrina. She could be downright awful sometimes when it came to her enemies. Seriously, one time in preschool, she hated a girl so much, she threw all of her smelly markers into a bucket of water. And, well, bye-bye markers, and bye-bye pretty smelling markers.
"How are you liking Hogwarts so far if that's the case?"
"Hogwarts is fine - great, even. I wish we had more time to hang out, though. It isn't fair. I miss you." She complained, in a slightly whiny voice. When it came down to time with her best friend, she could be a little greedy. She couldn't really get enough. She didn't have many friends in the first place - truly, he was still her only friend - so when she got the chance to, she would spend all of her spare time with him. It would be a waste otherwise. "We need to spend more time together." She huffed, playing with the hem of her robes.

A Day by the Lake
Some chatter caught his attention, yet he didn't really turn around to look to where it came from. His attention was on listening to the Gryffindor, curious of what her recent plights have been. Soft laughter would come from his, his shoulders and body moving at the slightest. He was very much a listener and he prided himself to be. Reid didn't talk much and tried not to do so as much as he could. Part of his struggle was sometimes to say anything at all.
The whole time she spoke, he would only mildly react and shift himself in a way that let him lean back against the tree's trunk. Sabrina was pretty light, a fact he found out after all of the times she just laid atop of him. He wasn't sure if he should be worried as to whether he needed to worry about Sabrina and her dislike for her dorm mate. She couldn't be that bad could she? He was quite comfortable now, his friend gave quite a good amount body heat and the ground wasn't that hard.
A nap would be good but Reid doubt that Sabrina would let him after the amount of time they've already been apart. He at least agreed to her last statement, a whole full agreement. "We do need to." he nodded, patting her back slightly. "I thought you were the one who was busy actually, we don't have any classes together." He glanced over his shoulder, seeing students make their way towards a different area of the lake. Maybe they thought they were a couple?
That couldn't be the case, they're too young, at least he thought himself too young. Anything romantic has given him some trouble lately. He was appreciative of his friends, but there were times where he wasn't sure what he was worried about anymore. Luckily being out here banished those feelings, there was never a doubt that he could always rely on Sabrina for that unspoken comfort. He was afraid of these fleeting moments, because they were - fleeting.
Would he be like this one year from now? Two years from now? Three or maybe even more? It scared him to think he might lose Sabrina and everyone else of course. "Hey -" he softly chuckled, holding up his pinky finger. "I don't want us to stop being best friends, okay? Can we swear on it? Because I'm going to miss you if we do." There was a hopefulness in his voice, he never wanted to lose Sabrina and if a naive pinky promise could hold that, then they would be fine.

A Day by the Lake
"Me? Busy?" Sabrina giggled, her body shaking a little bit along with it. She thought her own laugh sounded weird - like a hyena, maybe - but she didn't let her insecurities poke at her while she was with her best friend. So many perks came with hanging out with Reid, and the way her face heated up when he had patted her back was not one of them. "I am the least busy person in Gryffindor. Well, that is until the Quidditch try-outs. I want to get on the team." She grumbled. She would probably be more than frustrated if she didn't make it, but she knew that wouldn't stop her from trying again the following year - and every year after that, as well.
He was right, though, about the two of them not having any classes together. While Sabrina did have some classes with Hufflepuffs, none of them were Reid. She also had classes with Ravenclaw and Slytherin, which was way more common than Hufflepuff. She enjoyed the Ravenclaws' company - the Slytherins, on the other hand? Not quite as much. She snapped out of her thoughts as Reid spoke up again, and she tilted her head up to look at him, furrowing her eyebrows together, "Hmm?"
"I don't want us to stop being best friends, okay? Can we swear on it? Because I'm going to miss you if we do."
A small smile pulled at Sabrina's lips once again. It seemed inevitable, the smiling. He was just such a cute person - making her swear on things like this. She knew, deep down, there was no way that either of them would part. Not for long, anyways. Regardless, she lifted her hand to wrap her pinky around his own as a sort of promise. "I swear on it, Reido. Nothing will ever make us stop being friends." She let her pinky stay in the position for a few more moments before pulling it back. She interlocked her hands, and rested them on her stomach.
"I don't think I'd ever be able to not live with you."
Sure, her spoken grammar wasn't the best, but the girl was eleven. The meaning, on the other hand, was just as powerful as it would be worded differently. She had her gaze set on her hands when she said this, but her eyes glanced back up to the Hufflepuff boy's moments afterwards. She was speaking the truth - a life without her best friend was not in her foreseeable future. The Gryffindor girl would even go to Professor Barrows (despite knowing nothing about her, nor where her classroom was) to confirm this theory.

A Day by the Lake
The honesty that came with the friendship he had with Sabrina was one he cherished, he didn't have to worry about her lying to him. It proved a certain level of trust that he had with her. Her response made him confused a little, he didn't understand what she meant till the seventh time he ran it through his head. It clicked eventually and he grinned a little as he held onto the girl. What made him a little unsure was with how he felt about Sabrina. He thought she was a lot of things, a lot of things he liked of course. He thought she was funny, smart, and just recently - really pretty.
Of course all of this came slowly in time, it was all in the years he's spent growing up with the Hurst girl. In the beginning, she scared him and thought he might end up fighting with her all the time. But she grew onto him and the notion of 'cooties' didn't really exist. If Sabrina didn't have 'cooties', then the other girls probably didn't too. "You're the best, Sab." he laughed. What if something did pry them apart? What then? It was a thought he didn't want to indulge himself in, but he was always afraid that would happen. He's heard stories from upperclassmen back at the academy who drifted from their friends. That or they became enemies.
He didn't ever want to hate Sabrina and he didn't think it'd ever come to it. If it did, he knew for sure that it would just tear him apart. The thought of it made his stomach churn just now. He looked out towards the lake to distract himself from it, trying to remember what he had in mind. "Speaking of Quidditch, I'm trying out too. I think I could make it onto Hufflepuff's team." He kept one arm on one side of himself, the other lazily draped over Sabrina, easily moved. She would surely make it onto the team, plus she knew about it prior to coming to Hogwarts. He was just introduced to it recently. "Is your mom okay with you playing Quidditch, Sab? I still have to convince mine, she worries too much." he huffed.
