"Well it isn't like I'm proud of it!" Alexx dryly stated in a defensive tone. "I just never needed to know how." The conversation had started with a few other students, all whom of which Alexx was not by any means close with. Just one of those conversations you have with people that you know from a class or two while you're on your way somewhere else or if you were headed in the same direction. But when the other students began talking of swimming and water and... And then the question came. They snickered, of course.

But the French student only huffed, turning her head to the side. "So what, I can't swim? Who cares? Does my life depend on it? No!" And she left it at that, allowing them to continue on with their conversation. But Alexx only stuffed her hands in her pockets, stuffing her books under her left arm. She didn't mind so much. It wasn't as though not being able to swim was causing her to miss out on anything. No one invited her to swim anyway.

But there she was, having been invited to swim. The two girls had decided that Alexx needed to know; no, not just needed, it was vital that she knew. And Alexx knew it wasn't truly necessary, but these two were persistent with teaching her. "Surely, I mustn't need to know, really? I mean, I could go my whole life without ever learning. Would that be so bad?" She asked softly, staring at the lake. It was big and deep, and she was having regrets about agreeing to this. Truthfully, she had regretted it the second after she accepted. But it was too late to turn back.

Allowing herself to sharply inhale, an icy breath stinging the back of her throat, before making its way back out, she felt calmer. But this was only a form of false reassurance; she would be back to panic mode shortly. Was it natural to react this badly to something as small, yet so big, as water? Alexx knew little of how fears worked, only that she was incapable of coping with her fear of swimming.

And she suspected it was less of a fear of the exercise herself, but rather a fear of the embarrassment of learning so late. Truthfully, she was aware that she would be fine. She was in good hands, after all. "I mean... Is it difficult to learn?" She pondered out loud. She couldn't possibly be expected to be sure of such. "Does the learning process take long?" She was stalling.

It was natural to be nervous, that is what others had told her. It was natural to fear the unknown. And yes, a giant lake could qualify as "the unknown". Nothing was familiar about anything she was about to partake in. What would be a harmless swim for anyone else, it was a nightmare for her. She shivered, her eyes attempting to burn into the water in hopes that it would evaporate and save her.

𝒜h, the Great Lake. It housed many memories for Amadea, both good and bad. Now that Amadea thought about it, however, they mostly tended to be bad. There was the time that she had seen the boy who was on fire run into the lake; why he was on fire was still a mystery to Amadea even to this day. There was that time she had accidentally been pushed into the lake and that other time that someone else had fallen into the lake. And there was that time when she had seen some weird creature in the bottom of the lake. Overall, Amadea's experience with the Great Lake wasn't so good.

However, she wasn't going let those instances ruin this for her. She was doing this for the good of her...acquaintance and she wasn't going to let her fear of the past ruin anything for her. Swimming was important, after all, and anyone who didn't know how to should learn. That was Amadea's opinion, at least. That was why she was headed to the Great Lake.

To be honest, she wasn't quite sure how she had gotten roped into this, but nevertheless she was here now. Amadea turned to Alexx, who looked quite terrified. Amadea was confident the girl would learn how to swim in no time. Plus, Amadea had coached someone on how to swim earlier in the summer, so it wasn't like Amadea was new at this. "You need to learn how to swim, Alexx," Amadea said. "It's an important skill. It's not scary once you get in the water, I promise." Maybe that wasn't entirely true, but Amadea wanted to get Alexx in the water. If she was scared, there was no way she was getting into the water.

"I have a feeling that you're going to be great at this," Amadea said encouragingly. "It just takes some practice!" Addressing Alexx's second question, Amadea said, "I don't know how long it will take, but it will take longer if we keep standing here. Let's get into the water!" Amadea plunged into the lake, wading in until she was about knee deep. She turned around to see if the other two girls were following her.

Alexx was wrong. Serena knew that but she had no idea how to explain it to her. How do you tell someone that they were very wrong? Alexx claimed that her life did not depend on swimming. But this was Hogwarts. Danger lurked at every opportunity and corner. There was no escape from it. Serena knew that all too well. She learned that the hard way. Luckily, the lake seemed to be one of the safest places so far. No one had drowned but... so much else had gone wrong. In fact, Serena was very paranoid that one of the rooms she had gotten locked in last year was going to start filling with water. She was lucky it did not. But even if it did, she could swim so she probably would have been fine.

Not knowing how to swim put you at a risk. The Hufflepuff did not want anyone else to be at risk when swimming was so easy and simple. She used to do it weekly since she was a child. Her school forced her to. Her mother forced her to. It was kind of fun after a while.

She chose not to say any of this to Alexx, of course. Why scare someone needlessly? They were probably safe not knowing how to swim. But... that was not a risk she was willing to hedge any bets on. Serena was doing this out of fear. She was worried more students would get hurt and if there was something she could do to prevent that then she would.

Luckily, Amadea had a lot more patience than she did. She answered Alexx's questions with encouragement and kindness, without scaring the living daylights out of her. Serena simply backed her up with frequent nods and 'yeah!'s. "Amadea is right," Serena agreed with her, "It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it." Serena continued.

She was not the world's best swimmer but she had experience of doing it. She had gotten some badges from her school for being able to tread water for a certain length of time or for doing a certain amount of lengths. Her stamina and physical strength was not very good though, it prevented her from being able to do a ton of swimming. She would get exhausted quite quickly but at least, she would not drown straight away. Having had her fair share of lessons in primary school, Serena decided she would try and help impact some of that wisdom onto Alexx.

Serena was wearing shorts and a t-shirt rather than a swim suit but nonetheless, she followed Amadea into the water, "You'll be fine, Alexx, let's get you swimming," She replied, trying to be encouraging. The water was shallow where they stood. "We shouldn't go too far in but around here is fine, I think," She replied, not wanting Alexx to be thrown into the deep end. Her brother once tossed her into the deep end and... it was not fun. She was fine, as she knew how to swim but there was a lot of sheer panic.
