Finley made her way down to the Great Lake, a basket hanging from her arm swinging slightly as she walked. She was smiling slightly to herself, nervous anticipation coursing through her veins. A few days ago she had left a note in the Ravenclaw common room for her housemates stating that she was holding a picnic down at the lake and that anyone who wished to come was welcome. She had hoped that this would allow her to make some friends and hopefully help with her feelings of homesickness. It was true that she still missed her friends back home, and she probably always would, but meeting some new people and making some new friends here would definitely help her.

She found a spot where she believed that everyone would be able to see her and set out her blanket, waiting for other Ravenclaws to join her. Finley sat down and pulled a sandwich she had made half an hour or so before and took a careful bite, trying to control her nerves. There was a part of her that wondered if this was a bad idea. Maybe it was, maybe no one would show up and she would be left all alone. Pushing the thought out of her mind, she took another bite of her sandwich and got ready to wait.

After her first couple days of classes, Adelaide was thankful for the weekend. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy her classes or the work, she actually loved it, but she also wanted the opportunity to explore the castle and grounds a bit more and meet some new people. It was as if someone had answered her unspoken plea as she had saw a note in the Ravenclaw common room a couple of days ago, stating that the person who posted the note was holding a picnic today at the Great Lake and anyone was welcome to come. So, Adelaide found herself making the trek down to the lake to meet this mystery person, she really hoped they weren't a weirdo or a creep. It was a nice opportunity to meet new people and hopefully, find some friends.

The girl hadn't brought any food of her own, suspecting that the person hosting the picnic would be supplying the food. I mean, what kind of person would advertise a picnic and except the guests to bring their own food? Once she had made it down to the lake, her eyes scanned her surroundings to see if she could see anyone. She spotted a girl not far from her sitting on a blanket with a picnic basket beside her, and it didn't take a genius to put two and two together. Smiling, Adelaide made her way over to the girl. "Hello," she called out, hoping to grab the girl's attention, "With the picnic basket right beside you, I'm going to assume you're the person who posted that note in the common room a couple days ago." She sat down opposite the girl and smoothed out her clothes before introducing herself, "I'm Adelaide Barlowe, first year." She held her hand out, expecting a handshake.

The girl didn't look much older than herself, so she guessed that she was also a first year too. Which was probably why she had wrote the note in the first place, in an attempt to make friends. "How are you finding Hogwarts so far?" She inquired, "I love it, the work is very interesting. I've been wanting to attend Hogwarts for years, so being here is kind of surreal." No one else had arrived yet, so Adelaide might as well start a conversation with the girl to avoid any awkward silence.

The Great Lake
Leaning toward one of the mirrors, a light blonde girl blotted a stain pen to his lips, yielding just a slightly pinker tone than her natural color. Satisfied, she threw the product back into a black toiletry bag on her bed in the Ravenclaw Booted Eagle dormitory. Rora had only been at Hogwarts for a few days and it already felt like home. Her new house was Ravenclaw and she was as proud as ever to be with such an intelligent and creative groups of witches and wizards. Slipping on a black coat and grabbing her bag, she headed out the door and descended down the many, many steps between the Ravenclaw common room and the ground floor.

The girl had a little extra pep in her step today because she was meeting some of her new housemates for a picnic. One of Rora's favorite things, if not her favorite of all time, was the great outdoors. Anything and everything nature-related always called to Rora, from plants to magical creatures to traveling. She couldn't get enough of it and Hogwarts felt like the ideal launching point for her new independence away from home. As the youngest of five and the last at Hogwarts, her final year at home was full of clashes with mum and dad over the smallest of things. Well... Not really small. More like unexpected explosions from experiments Rora was doing with her dads muggle chemicals and unexpected wildlife being hushed into their home, only to be discovered by her mum as it joined them at dinner one night.

No parents, no rules. With a smirk, Rora pulled out a pair of orange aviator sunglasses and put them on. She unwrapped a muggle lollipop her dad had given her and placed the wrapper back in her bag. No time for littering - she was such an eco-conscious gal as it was being the daughter of two hippie parents. Spotting a pair of girls that looked slightly familiar and they had a picnic basket, Rora nervously skipped over to them. One of them was definitely Adelaide, a girl she had met in Diagon Alley before school started and was also sorted into Ravenclaw. Taking out her lolly, she gave Adelaide a quick hug. "Hi there! Hope I'm not too late to the party. Adelaide, I'm so happy we both got placed in Ravenclaw." Turning to the other girl, she reached out her hand "I'm Aurora, but I go by Rora. I'm a first year. What about you?" As an extroverted introvert, Rora had been quite surprised by how social she had been at Hogwarts so far. Hogwarts was pushing her outside of her comfort zone and she was thriving with potential. The world was her oyster and this was just step one: finding a core friend group in her Ravenclaw house. "Oh right! I brought candy. Please have some." Plopping down on the blanket with them, she dumped her backpack out. There was a mixture of muggle and wizard candy ranging from Reese's to Every Flavor Beans.

Finley sat by herself for a few more minutes, thinking over all of the things she had been told before she left for the school. About how her parents had been sorted into Slytherin and how she hadn't shared the same experience. There was a small part of her that wondered if she had been placed in the correct house at all. Everyone in her family that had the privilege of going to Hogwarts had been placed in that house. And yet, here she was, an 11 year old placed in what she believed was the wrong house, trying desperately to make some friends.

Moments later, she was pulled out of her thoughts by a voice. "Hi!" She responded, trying to sound as cheerful as possible. "Yes, that would be me, please do help yourself to anything you fancy. I'm Finley," She paused for a second to clear her throat. "Finley Grey, also a first-year." How had she been liking Hogwarts? It had been quite terrible if she was honest. She was desperately homesick, longing to be back in her old school. "You knew about Hogwarts before you got your letter?" She asked, clearly confused. "My parents never told me about it, not until they had to anyway. I didn't even know I could do magic until I did it the first time."

Another girl showed up then and Finley nodded towards her. "Hi! No, you're not too late at all. I'm Finley Grey, it's nice to finally meet some people in my year and house." For the first time, she found herself smiling naturally. "Please do help yourself to anything you like." Finley grabbed a muggle chocolate that she recognized from home and popped it into her mouth. "So, did you know about Hogwarts before you came Rora?"

"It is very nice to meet you Finley," Adelaide smiled sweetly at the girl, "It was a very good idea to set this up, who doesn't love free food and making new friends?" She laughed slightly, but her smile quickly turned into a frown at what Finley had said. "Yes, I did know about Hogwarts before attending. Did you not?" She asked in confusion. Was Finley a muggle-born? In that case, it would make sense as to why she didn't know about Hogwarts. This must be a lot harder for Finley than it is for Adelaide if she really was a muggle-born, even Adelaide is feeling slightly intimidated by Hogwarts despite knowing about it her whole life. "Are you a muggle-born by any chance?" Adelaide inquired, "This must be harder for you if you are, one minute you don't know the wizarding world exists and the next you've been thrust into a life full of spells and potions, it must be all very scary," Adelaide said sympathetically, "My parents tried to tell me as much as possible about Hogwarts before I attended, but it's still all so amazing and so much better seeing it than having to listen to stories about it."

Just then, another girl showed up. A girl that Adelaide surprisingly recognized, it was Aurora, the girl she had met in Diagon Alley before school started. Adelaide was slightly surprised when Aurora gave her a hug, not really expecting it, but she still returned the hug anyway. "Hey, Aurora!" She smiled at the girl, "Don't worry, you're not too late. But yes, it is great that we both got sorted into Ravenclaw!" She watched as Aurora dumped her backpack out, a mixture of all sorts of sweets falling out of it. Some Adelaide clearly recognized as wizard sweets, others Adelaide didn't, she assumed they must be muggle sweets.

She picked up the packet that said 'Reese's' on it, apparently it was peanut butter flavored. "Peanut butter flavored chocolate? Are you sure them two things are meant to go together?" She asked Aurora, her nose scrunching up slightly in disgust. Setting the strange sweet back down, she decided to opt for a packet of Every Flavor Beans. Opening the packet and popping one gingerly into her mouth, hoping to Merlin that she would not get a bad flavor, she sighed in relief as the flavor of cherry filled her mouth. "Cherry, thank goodness," She laughed before offering the packet to both Aurora and Finley, "Want one?"

Finley, huh? That was actually her twin brothers name. He and her other twin brother Calan were seventh year Hufflepuffs who were in a trendy band that played all over Scotland and occasionally on the side at Hogwarts. That was something Rora looked forward to most - seeing her brothers play and experiencing the thrill of breaking a couple rules by doing so. The Accola's were quite the mischievous lot and you never really knew what you'd get when they were all together.

Ripping the side of a Kit Kat, Rora popped it in her mouth and bit down. The crunch of a Kit Kat was much more satisfying than the flavor itself, but she loved chocolate regardless of the quality. "Oh, absolutely! One of the things muggles got completely right." Rora exclaimed, looking at Adelaide in disbelief. "Peanut butter and chocolate are my favorite combination! They even come in different shapes for different holidays like pumpkins and Christmas trees."

Trying to avoid sounding like a Reese's advertisement, she glanced over to Finley. "Yes, I knew all about Hogwarts. So much so that I was counting down the days for years until I got my letter. I have two twin brothers and a sister in Hufflepuff. And another brother who is a fourth year Ravenclaw prefect. Loads of family friends too who would tell me stories. It was quite hard for mum to hide anything about Hogwarts once my brothers came home from holiday for the first time."

She raised her eyebrows and reached into the bag of Every Flavor Beans, trying to predict which one would be best. There had been a series of unfortunate events when it came to these beans and Rora. She swore she had gotten every nasty flavor they made before she finally picked a good flavor. She opted for green because a yellow one she had tried recently was earwax and the black one was dirt. With a grimace, she made a disgusted face. "Yuck, I must have picked grass. Better than vomit or rotten egg I guess."

"My parents said that I'm a pureblood, whatever that means. But they didn't tell me about magic until they had to when I was eight. I didn't learn about Hogwarts until I got my letter on my 11th birthday and even then it wasn't made into a big deal. I don't know why my parents kept it from me but that's how things went. I didn't even know my dad's real job until the night before I left for school. He's a magiz... magis..." She paused for a second, thinking. "Magizoologist! That's what he is. Probably why he always wanted me around animals, even if they were the muggle variety."

She happily took the sweet that was offered to her and popped it into her mouth and chewed it thoroughly before speaking again. "So both of you have wizard parents I assume. That's really cool that they told you about things before they had to. Though I think it would've been harder for me to make the friends that I had if they hadn't raised me the way they did." She looked down for a moment seemingly deep in thought. "It's been so nice to meet both of you. I was a little worried that no one would show up to be honest. "Finley looked back up, smiling now. "It'll be so nice to have some friends around here. I was getting a little lonely spending all of my time by myself."

Confused was probably the best way to describe what Adelaide was feeling. How did Finley not know about Hogwarts before attending if she was a pure-blood? It simply made no sense to Adelaide. "Why would your parents keep that from you? Did they hide doing spells around you then? I wonder how they were able to do that," Adelaide pondered over the question for a couple of seconds before deciding it wasn't that important to dwell over. If Finley grew up without knowing about magic, that wasn't really Adelaide's problem to ponder over.

Adelaide was still not convinced that peanut butter and chocolate were meant to go together, "Okay, whatever you say Rora. They still don't sound like the two should go together, though," she said before picking up a Kit Kat and opening it, she ripped the bar in half like Rora did, assuming that was what you were meant to do. Popping one of them into her mouth and savoring the delicious taste of the chocolate she swallowed before replying, "See? This is better. Just plain chocolate. You can't go wrong with that."

Adelaide related to Rora's experience of counting down the days until she got her letter, "I did the exact same thing!" She laughed, "I was so excited to go to Hogwarts after all the stories my parents had told me. I have a sister in Gryffindor, she's a third year but she never really told me anything about Hogwarts, we don't really get along." Adelaide thought back to the times that she had tried desperately to no avail to get Eloise to tell her anything about Hogwarts, but most of the times she was met with Eloise's bedroom door slamming in her face. Ah, sisterly love.

Adelaide couldn't help but laugh when Rora's face turned up in disgust as she ate a bean, "Grass, that's unfortunate. But yes, it is definitely better than getting rotten egg or vomit. Speaking of my sister, she once tricked me into eating a rotten egg flavored bean because she said it was lemon. Don't ask me how I fell for that, I was young and naïve." After discarding the packet of Every Flavor Beans somewhere on the picnic blanket, she turned her attention back to Finley who had started speaking.

She nodded, "Yeah, my parents are both wizards. Magic was no secret to me, I knew about it ever since I was born. They never had a reason to keep it a secret from me." She felt slightly sorry for Finley, she wasn't sure why her parents wouldn't tell her that she was a witch because it probably made going to Hogwarts just that much harder, "It's been really nice to meet you too!" Adelaide gave Finley a gentle smile, "You don't have to spend time by yourself now if you don't want to, cause now you have us!" Adelaide gestured to her and Rora, "It'll be great to have some friends in the same house, that way we can always see each other about." It was only a couple of days into September and Adelaide had already found a couple of friends and she was quite happy with that. Take that, Eloise, she thought, I can actually make friends. A part of her was tempted to go brag in Eloise's face that she actually can make friends, but she'd have to put that on a to-do list for later because right now, she was enjoying a nice picnic with Finley and Rora.

The Great Lake
It was a subject that seemed like it shouldn't be one to approach hastily. Rora read the room and could tell Adelaide was just as confused as she was. Her mind started racing with theories: What if her parents were dark wizards and she wasn't to be trusted at a young age with that knowledge?, or Maybe they thought she was a squib or something and wanted to make her feel loved and part of the family, or What if they just wanted more of a simple life outside of magic? The last one was accurately relatable to Rora and her family. Who knows what the reason for Finley's family keeping it a secret, but it was probably for a good reason. Rora was such an emotional, empathetic feeler that she didn't know if it would make Finley feel good if she knew that pureblood meant every single person in her family had been a witch or wizard. She kept her trap shut for the time being but pocketed the questions for later on.

Rora nearly choked on her lollipop and gave a few exasperated coughs. "Magi...zool...ogist!" Her eyes widened in amazement. That were her sister Ansley's dream career in the wizarding world. Rora and Ansley would get into the most mischief together when they went on adventures trying to find magical creatures wherever they were. Thinking back to some of their times, she shuttered as she remembered quite a handful of near death experiences from beasts they had no business interacting with. "That's so cool! I personally could see myself doing something with herbology and potions, but my sister would kill to be a magizoologist." Realizing they likely had no idea who she was, she added "Her name is Ansley and she's a second year Hufflepuff."

Good thing Adelaide enjoyed the Kit Kats, they weren't Rora's top choice. "Well this works out wonderfully! You can have the Kit Kats and I'll eat the Reese's. We both win for now. Maybe one day you'll come over to the nutty side." She smiled and teased, unwrapping another Reese's and undoubtedly about to be in a sugar coma. Her heart sank about Adelaide and her sister. Rora could not imagine not being close to Ansley. They were best friends and inseparable, even at Hogwarts and being in different houses. Happy that Adelaide lightened the mood, she chuckled along with her. "Sounds like something I would do to Ash when he's getting on my nerves. He's the Ravenclaw brother."

From Adelaide's family story, it seemed like they had grown up in a similar manner. "Same with me. I've always been surrounded by magic. My family is quite large and we live in my mums childhood house, so all of my friends growing up were from the wizarding world. I don't think I have a Muggle friend who isn't at Hogwarts, actually." She added with a frown, stroking her chin and trying to think if there was anyone in her life who was nonmagical.

Her gaze softened and she chimed in with Adelaide. "Of course people will show up! This is such a cool idea - a picnic during this beautiful weather? Count me in anytime!" She wanted to make sure Finley felt supported and included. Ravenclaw had been a great experience so far for her, even though it had only been a few days. "Right! Now you have us. As the muggles would say, we can be like the Three Musketeers!" Rora tossed both of the girls a silver mini three musketeers candy, having absolutely no idea what it actually meant.

Finley looked at them both with confusion apparent on her face. How had both of them heard so much about Hogwarts before they even attended? It was causing Finley to question what her parents had told her about why they kept it a secret. "My parents said it was for my own protection, though I'm starting to question that if both of you knew about it before coming." She paused for a second, thinking back to the conversation she had with her parents in the weeks leading up to when she had left for Hogwarts. "Only things I was told was that it was a school for witches and wizards like us and that my parents had attended it when they were my age. No stories about it or anything of the sort."

She giggled slightly, surprised at Aurora's reaction. "Yes, he's a magizoologist. He took me to his work one day and I got to meet his phoenix. I'm really hoping to be able to follow in his footsteps and be one myself." She thought back to meeting Helia, the phoneix that her father owned. It was a beautiful creature with a wonderfully playful demeanor. "Well, I hope that both your sister and I get to be a magizoologist then."

"I'm beginning to wish that I had siblings. Probably another reason I never heard about Hogwarts before my letter came." She smiled, listening to both of them tell stories of their families, nodding along as she spoke. Finley found herself relaxing even more in the company of her new friends, hoping that these friendships would last her through school. She grabbed a Reese's, nodding her head in agreement. Yes, I must agree that chocolate and peanut butter are quite good together. However, I think that all chocolate is good. "

She paused again, trying to replay the conversation to see if she had heard correctly. "I'm sorry, grass flavored? Rotten egg? Why would you ever eat anything flavored like that? Just sounds like an overall horrible experience." Obviously, this had to be a wizard-only thing. There was no way that muggles as she had learned to call them would partake in anything like that. They just sounded disgusting to begin with, even if there was a chance to get a better flavor.

"I'm not sure about the three musketeers, but we definitely make a good group. I don't know about you two but I can't wait to see what kind of trouble we get into together." She laughed a little, only half-joking about getting into trouble with her new friends. Especially since trouble had always seemed to find her and Charlie when the two were together. Finley smiled widely at the memories of her home, but no longer felt homesick about it. She knew that she could always write a letter to Charlie, and she would see him at the end of the school year over the summer she would only have to wait a little while.
