A Meeting on Thin Ice

12th December 2020
Early Evening - Before Curfew
With only a couple of weeks till the end of her first term at Hogwarts, Scarlet felt the time had flown, of course she would enjoy the break from a certain couple of her classes. The mood in the castle had become quite festive recently, and in several places, Christmas decorations in gold, red and green had been displayed.
This time of the year also brought changes in the weather, with most mornings came a covering of frost throughout the grounds and a distinct chill in the air. There had already been a few days of snowfall, but none after which the settled snow lasted for more than a couple of days.
At some point during the day, Scarlet had overheard another student mention that after the cold temperatures of the previous night, the Black Lake had frozen over, and so had been meaning to take a wander over there since. It was a Saturday and so she was a little annoyed at herself that she hadn't just gone in the afternoon when it wasn't as cold, but she had taken longer than she expected to finish some homework for History of Magic in the library.
She decided to go for dinner earlier today, and so was finished from the hall by about half past six. From there she quickly stopped off at her dorm to pick up her hat and scarf and was out of the castle by quarter to seven. She wasn't surprised to walk out and for it to be almost dark already, after all it had been getting dark from about four o'clock recently. She carefully made her way down to the lake, taking care not to slip on any ice, passing a few other students on her way, most making their way back towards the castle.
'It is frozen' she thought to herself excitedly on arriving at the lake, the usual ripples from the water coming up to the shore we no longer visible, instead, the ice that seemingly extended across the entire surface made the lake appear eerily still. Scarlet edged her way towards the waters edge and tested the ice with her foot, and was surprised to find it didn't crack underneath the pressure. Even when she extended her leg out further and brought it down with a little more speed, not even a crack appeared.
Stepping back from the ice, Scarlet was about to continue walking along the water's edge when she heard footsteps from behind her, or at least the crunch of something on the frosted grass.
