Normally, Lucia Fox was not one for gardening. She liked the idea of making new life and helping to cultivate it to make it beautiful, and she liked to walk through or sit in a pretty garden with blooms all around her, but in reality the process wasn't quite as lovely as the end result. It was the dirt, really, that bothered her. Gardening meant you ended up with dirt in your nails, in your hair, over all your clothes... there was a whole lot of dirt. Lucia had received Poor or worse in all of her Herbology practical assessments ever since first year, mostly due to her taking three times the time that everyone else took so she wouldn't have to get covered in dirt. The end result wasn't too bad, and she could confidently do the assessments in theory, but that didn't matter all that much. Call her vain, and you'd be right.

All this was why it was a surprise for anyone who knew her to see Lucia at the Grounds Keeper's cabin, recieving a shovel in order to take part in his new plant-based errand. As it was, she'd decided that she wanted to give it a go - and after all, the money and house points wouldn't be bad things to receive. The funny thing was that, although Lucia hated getting dirty, she did actually have quite a talent for both interior and exterior design (not that she either knew or would admit it). She'd thought for a while that it would be nice to have some flowers by the late around the willow tree, and here was her chance to make it happen.

She immediately took off towards the lake and wandered around for a few minutes, trying to figure out what she should do. What if, rather than just digging holes for flora, she made a maze? Just a small one, of course, and not the type that would take you ages to work out (especially since you could see over the 'walls'), but a maze nonetheless. It was going to need a lot of digging though... but it would be worth it, Lucia was sure of that.

She started off by raking the shovel along the floor to create a symmetrical design. Okay, this was going to be less of a maze and more of a flower bed. Actually, no. Lucia sat down, took a swigg from her water bottle, and wiped her forehead. "It's too hot for this," she moaned to herself and looked around for something else to do.

Maybe she should just dig a hole around the base of the willow tree where flowers could be planted - like a border. Yes, that would work. Lucia crouched down and started levering the soil out of the ground - a pitifully small amount of soil when compared to the size of the shovel. Plus, she kept having to twist around to dump the soil behind her. Gardening, it seemed, wasn't for her after all.

After a few minutes of 'intense struggles' in the arm department, Lucia settled on the energy-saving option of using her shovel like a catapult, sending the dirt flying behind her as she dug a nice-sized curve around the base of the tree. Focused fully on her task, she wouldn't notice the sound of footsteps until it was too late...

Today was the day that Lavinia had decided to try something new. Since the quidditch season was over she hadn’t gone outside much to enjoy the summer. But, when the grounds keeper made and event to remove plants from the grounds she thought that she should do it. Anyways, it would help her get out more and there was nothing on the school grounds to be afraid of. It wasn’t like the forbidden forest where monstrous creatures could come out and hurt her, it was just the school grounds.

She was motivated to try digging holes that could help make Hogwarts a nicely looking place. After all, she still had to be here another four years and didn’t want the place looking bad. That’s how she found herself outside near the Grounds Keeper’s cabin on a Tuesday in June. She picked up a shovel from the over enthusiastic grounds keeper and set off on her way. Lavinia had decided that she would head towards Great Lake but started making a few pit stops on the way.

There was a wilted cluster of flowers that looked like they were just begging to get out of the ground so Lavinia gripped her shovel and dug it into the ground. She pulled the majority of the flowers but had to go for a second scoop the get all of them gone. Instead of wasting energy by throwing the dirt she had just laid it in a little mound right next to the hole. She was trying to be cautious with the dirt because she would rather not spend hours trying to clean it off of her.

The next hole she dug was just a few feet away from the first one. She thought that it would be nice if there was a plant every few feet to help decorate the grounds. That made her have to stop very 5 or so feet to dig another hole. It was kind of nice and calming to dig the holes in a repetitive manner. They were all of the edge of the grounds and with each one she dug, she came closer to the Great Lake.

Finally she had reached the Great Lake, she had dug about 15 holes at this point and was quite proud of her work but still had a bit energy left so decided to keep going. This hole happened to land on a dead bush that she really wanted out of the ground. Out of nowhere when she was trying to dig it out, dirt hit her. Lavinia looked up confused about why dirt was hitting her and was met with a pile of dirt hitting her face. She didn’t have much against getting dirty but this random person who she just now saw seemed to have it out for her.

The person looked to be very intrigued in what they were digging but there was no reason why they should catapult it backwards. Lavinia wasn’t happy about it because she was finally doing something out of her dorm and this girl had decided to ruin it by giving her face fulls of dirt. Taking a step out of the ‘spray zone’ she spat out a mouthful of dirt and spoke to the girl in a frustrated tone. ”Excuse me, watch where you’re throwing your dirt, you just threw it at me many times.”

Lucia was nearly finished with her task, and Merlin was it more rewarding than she'd thought it would be. She sang to herself under her breath, a song which she and Carolyn had been dancing to at the weekend, barely even looking behind her at the dirt which was piling up. Which was why she only noticed that someone was behind her when she heard the voice. The Hufflepuff stopped digging and singing, lowering her spade as she swiveled round from her spot kneeling on the floor to face whoever it was she'd just attacked.

Unfortunately, Lucia did not like what she saw. For one thing, she recognised the girl. She was a third year, for one thing, which wasn't good because, in Lucia's mind, people in the older years were scary. Well, not all of them, but most. For another, Lucia was pretty sure she was a Quidditch player, although she couldn't remember which team. This also wasn't good, because it meant that the other girl was probably stronger than her, meaning that, if she chose to throw dirt right back at the Hufflepuff, Lucia wouldn't stand a chance.

The one funny thing was how covered in dirt the girl was, but to Lucia at the time it didn't look at all funny. It just meant that this girl had a reason to dislike her, and possibly want revenge. Lucia really, really hoped she wouldn't want revenge.

"Merlin's beard," Lucia blurted. She made to run a hand through her hair, but stopped just in time. There was dirt under all her nails, and she didn't want to have to wash her hair before dinner. "I'm so sorry. I really am. Merlin." Calm down. She took three deep breaths, trying to remember what Ebony had told her to do in these sorts of situations. Offer them something. "Um, would you like me to help you digging or something? Merlin. Sorry again."

Lavinia was covered in dirt and it was not a pleasant experience to say the least. She had finally decided to do something good for this school and had been out here digging holes, doing manual labor just to get covered in dirt. She wasn’t really in the best mood and as much as she was trying to keep up her friendly demeanor it wouldn’t stay up. She was tired and sweaty from the work and just wanted to sleep but now had to deal with dirt being everywhere on her.

As the girl turned around, Lavinia took in her features, she didn’t recognize her at all. Lavinia only knew that she didn’t remember her from a quidditch game and that she looked a little younger than her. When the girl tried to apologize, Lavinia wanted to laugh but kept it in, what made this girl think apologizing would help the situation. What made Lavinia almost start laughing was when the girl said that she could help with digging. Almost immediately, Lavinia responded, “No way, do I look like I want to be covered in more dirt?”

She was acting kind of sassy and it was most likely a result of her tiredness and being covered in dirt. A thought hit her then, if this girl was so keen on doing something for her than she could use that to her advantage. Lavinia could do something she would have never thought of before since now she might hav someone to do part of it for her. Lavinia went to talk to the girl again, “I wouldn’t really waste your breath trying to apologize, it already happened and you owe me, big time.”

Lucia flushed an embarrassed shade of peach. What was she supposed to say to that? "Oh. Okay." It wasn't the most articulate of responses but Lucia had no idea how to remedy this.

The older girl decided that there was no use in Lucia apologising. Oh. Lucia had always been taught the opposite - that, whatever you had done, you could at least make people feel a little less annoyed at you if you properly showed that you were sorry for it. Apologising was what Lucia did when she did something wrong - or, more often, when she didn't do anything wrong but felt embarrassed about something. Which happened quite a lot, actually. Being easily embarrassed wasn't one of Lucia's best personality traits.

Apparently, Lucia also now 'owed' the girl. "Um, okay." Lucia really hoped that this didn't mean money. It meant a favour, right? Lucia thought so, but she figured she shouldn't check in case she was wrong. "Uh, I'm Lucia. Lucia Fox." She stood up and offered her hand out to the muddy girl.

Once introductions were exchanged, Lucia didn't feel like digging any more. What if she sprayed mud all over someone else too? It just wasn't worth it. "I'm going to, um, take my shovel back," she told the Ravenclaw and speed-walked out of the way. Her cheeks didn't calm down until she was back in her dorm room. Well, that didn't go very well, did it?
[ Thread left. Sorry for the abrupt ending but figured we should start on the second part asap - will get a starter post up for that soon if that's ok with you! ]

Lavinia felt somewhat superior in the current moment. Even though she was covered in dirt, she had leverage over the other girl and was prepared to use it to her own advantage. Watching as the dirt culprit looked uncomfortable, Lavinia let a little smile hit her lips. Her plan that she was making up at the moment was working. She had gotten the girl to feel bad and be uncomfortable about her actions which would let Lavinia use her a bit for her own gain.

Normally, Lavinia wouldn’t be like this at all but, something about the sun with the combination of manual labor and being covered in dirt had her leaning into some of her more negative attributes. The younger girl introduced herself by the name of Lucia and held her hand out for Lavinia. Hesitantly shaking her hand, Lavinia said shortly, “Lavinia Cloven” That would be a decent enough introduction for now as she memorized the name Lucia. It would be needed for later encounters.

Abruptly and unsurprisingly, Lucia said that she was going to go take her shovel back. Before Lucia could leave, Lavinia spoke quickly, “Alright, be prepared you will probably be hearing from me soon.” It was the calmest thing she had said for the whole conversation and it was true. Lucia would be hearing from Lavinia soon for details on what she owed her.

Slowly leaving the scene and returning her shovel, Lavinia made her way back to her dorm with one main thought in mind. It’s time for revenge.
