Happy Birthday to Me
In her dormitory, Calypso Starling opened her eyes. She glanced at the small analog clock on her bedside table. 5:00. February 7th. she would turn twelve years old in precisely two hours and nine minutes. Cal rolled out of bed as quietly as she could, as not to wake her dorm mates. She got dressed, making sure to fasten her watch to her wrist, threw on a hoodie and grabbed a blanket. Looking at her book lying on the side table, Calypso considered bringing it. She decided against it, however. She wanted to simply be with nature while she watched the sun rise on her birthday. The young Gryffindor slipped out of Kneazle Nests dormitory and descended the many staircases and corridors of the castle.Stepping outside, Calypso breathed in the fresh morning air and stretched her arms to the sky."Hello, today," she whispered. She continued down the sloping hill until she came to the spot near the Great Lake where she had run into Ashley that day in the early morning, all those months ago. the young girl sat down in the slightly-damp-with-dew grass and wrapped herself in her blanket. She checked her watch. 5:28. The sun was due to rise around eight o clock. Cal laid back in the grass, feeling it's dampness wet her hair. Whatever, that would dry. She heard birdsong, and tried to mimic it back to the creature, but failed. She laughed at that. Closing her eyes, Cal simply took in the world around her. All the smells, the sounds, the feel of wet grass on her skin. And here in this place, she was a part of it all.
A bit later, she checked her watch again. 7:00. Nine more minutes, she thought. By 7:07 the sun had not come up yet (as expected), but the edge of the horizon was lit with a beautiful hazy glow. Calypso sighed. What a beautiful way to start a birthday. Glancing at her watch, she saw there were ten seconds left of her eleven-year-old-ness. Looking at the glowing horizon, she made a wish just as the minute hand struck 7:09.
