Hogwarts on Ice
Permission to host the game given by @Artemis VernatisWinter was getting closer and closer, and if the calendar hadn't said so then the weather was giving it away; A thin sheet of snow had settled over the Grounds of Hogwarts and the Lake had finally frozen over enough to allow for the weight of a bunch of students without risk of breaking in.
Ruka had managed to ask his way through half the staff of Hogwarts, House elves included, to arrange for the things he had needed, which had really just been two goals, enough Hockey sticks to equip two full teams and some old hockey skates in various sizes that the House elves seemed to have collected over the years, just in case someone needed a pair. Eventually their Charms Professor Vernatis had agreed to help him out with setting things up and giving him permission to do what he wanted to do in the first place. What he was hoping to arrange wasn't going to be professional by any means, but he had faith that it was going to be fun nonetheless, albeit a bit painful for those not quick enough to dodge a tackle or a spell.
Ruka had thought very hard on the rules of the game he wanted to get people to play; A mix between duelling and ice hockey. Ever since joining the duelling team, he had become increasingly ambitious at practicing his own spell casting, his agility and focusing on his aim, and he had found that doing so through play was just about the most fun way of learning. Hopefully his schoolmates were going to agree.
So after setting up the two goals and putting the hockey sticks down by the edge of the lake, where the ice was still thin enough for the water to peek through every once in a while, Ruka put on his own hockey skates - curtesy of his new family - and got onto the ice, a silver whistle between his lips and attached to a black band wrapped around his neck. He was hopeful that some people had noticed the flyers he had tried to pass through the school, or maybe they would just be curious as to what he was doing out on the ice.
Either way, Ruka was going to wait for people to gather around before handing them all a leaflet of rules and explanations to read through before the fun could begin.Joining the GameBy entering this thread you are joining the Game - The spots are first come first serve. There are two teams of six players each, so once twelve people have joined the game this thread will go from Open to Private.
As soon as we have twelve players I will post the first Mod Post and the Game will commence!
On each team there will be one Goalie, two people on Defence and three people on Attack.
The teams and positions will not be chosen but randomly decided for you, so entering the Thread and putting on your Hockey skates - Either your own, or those provided for you - will be your first Action.
You may state your preference for a specific position but I can make no promises
No worries, you cannot crit-fail at getting yourself on the ice!General Information- After the first Mod Post everyone is allowed one Action per round
- There will be a Mod Post every five days
- Your actions will be rolled for depending on Posting Order so if you don't want to risk being tackled before you can execute your own action better be quick!
- Though it is not the Aim of the Game to eliminate your opponents, there is the chance of fainting should your Health go below 10% of the starting Health
- For Spell Casting the Duelling Guideline applies
- Only Goalies are allowed to cast spells. Unless you are willing to suffer the consequences if you are caught
- You must have at least one of the Spells on the provided List in your Trunk to join the Game
- The standard 200 word minimum for posts applies
- The Game ends once one Team has scored Three Goals
- Please state your Stats, Race and Abilities for Moderation Purposes
- You may either state your Action in your post, or if you would rather keep it a secret you can also message me privately either via Owl or on Discord
- The IC date of the Game is Saturday, December 12thActionsSteal:
An Action to be made by either Attack or Defence. You can try to get the puck from the player who is currently in possession of it by sneakily stealing it away from them. For this an Accuracy VS Evasion Roll will be performed.
Reducio- Should the person you are trying to steal from not be in possession of the Puck anymore by the time you execute your action, your Steal will either turn into a Tackle or a Snatch, depending on whether the Puck is now in possession of someone else or merely skidding across the ice by itself.
Hockey Check:
An Action to be made by either Attack or Defence. You can check another player, whether they are in possession of the puck or not. For this an Accuracy VS Evasion Roll will be performed. If successful, a Strength roll will be performed to check on whether the target has been pushed to the Ground and caused Damage or not. If a Target is hit but not pushed to the Ground they will receive -1 Accuracy for their next action. A fallen Target will require one full action to get back on their feet again.
Should the fallen Target have been in possession of the puck, the puck will now aimlessly slide across the ice and provide the opportunity for players to Snatch.
ReducioDamage: Attacker's STR x 10 + 40
- Someone who has already been pushed to the ground can be checked again. They will suffer -2 Evasion when attacked but also receive 10% less damage if hit.
- If you have been pushed to the Ground before executing your Action for the ongoing Round, it will automatically change to "Get Off the Ground".
Snatch:
An Action to be made by Attack. In the event that the puck is loose on the ice and not in possession of another player, players now have the chance to snatch it for themselves. For this a Wisdom Check (14DC) will be performed for everyone trying to Snatch. For those whose Wisdom Check has been successful, an Accuracy Roll will be performed. The player with the highest Accuracy roll will get the Puck.
Reducio- Regardless of Posting Order, every person who tries to snatch the Puck for themselves will be rolled for together.
Pass:
An Action to be made by Defence. The puck can be passed to a player on the Attack. An Accuracy Check (12DC) will be performed for the player passing the puck, and a Wisdom check (12DC) for the player that it is being passed to.
Reducio- If the puck is passed to someone who has previously been knocked to the ground, the pass will be redirected to a still standing Attack Player of the same Team.
Shoot to Score:
An Action to be made by Attack. If in possession of the puck, a player can try to score a Goal. For this an Accuracy VS Wisdom Roll will be performed.
Reducio- If someone managed to make you lose the Puck before you manage to Shoot to Score, the action becomes void. Your rage may get you a stat advantage, however.
Casting a Spell:
An Action to be made by the Goalie. Various spells may be cast at the other Team's Attack Players in an attempt to swing the odds in your favour. Some spells may have the chance of pushing their target to the Ground, causing them to require a full action to get back on their feet again.
Guard:
An Action to be made by the Goalie. In the event that a Shoot to Score is to be expected, a Goalie can choose to Guard their Goal with full focus. This will add +2 to their Wisdom stat for one Round only.
Foul:
Players on the field are not allowed to cast spells at others, and Goalies are not allowed to cast spells at anybody but the opposing team's Attack Players. Should one act against those rules they will have to expect a penalty. Unless they manage to be very sneaky. There will be a Roll for Detection.
The List of approved Spells is as follows. Their Effects follow the Duelling Guideline.
ReducioYear One Spells:
- Curse of the Bogies
- Green Sparks Charm
- Knockback Jinx
- Sneezing Hex
- Dancing-Feet Spell
Year Two Spells:
- Blindfolding Spell
- General Counter Spell

The air had a chill in it while the lake was frozen over, winter has truly come to hogwarts and with it a sense of cheerfulness about others. The month has brought a joyful spirit among students about going home or celebrating at Hogwarts it was rather hard to find someone who was anxious, worried, or basically down but yet there were a few that found a way to look past the Christmas cheer.
Dressed in not really warm clothes and walking along the great lake, Henry was dwelling on his thoughts and worries as he walked alongside the coast not expecting to get pulled into a game of hockey and dueling.
Henry saw the boy whom he recognized as the gryffindor front the hospital wing on skates in the frozen lake surrounded by other skates and sticks. He knew about the game hockey but never played, he was on the slytherin dueling team, and even staked with his brother before so he was curious as he approached the boy.
" Uh hi, can I ask what's with the skates and sticks?"
Henry would read the leaflet that the gryffindor handed to him explaining the games and the rules. It sounded like fun toward the boy who was looking for a distraction as he spoke " would you mind if I join? And could I use one of those pair of stakes?" Henry would wait for answer before pulling off his trainers and setting them aside. He then would pull on a pair of old skates that the gryffindor boy brought out from the house elf's before getting up and walking onto the ice where he would then do a few simple skating moves.

Willow was always one that wanted to support her friends, and with Ruka and Willow being on less ambiguous terms than they left last year she was all set to go and support him and his hockey game. Had she ever played hockey? No. But! She could hold a stick and hit things with it, so she felt like she was pretty good to go. Her family would go ice skating together a lot when she was growing up, mostly with her dad, since her mom panicked every time that she fell down. While she was clumsy, over the years she had gotten the hang of it while still falling over every now and again. But she did that with walking too, so she considered herself an expert.
It was also a reason for her to get outside. With the cold weather settling in she had been less and less keen on running out into that air that hurt to breathe most of the time. While snow was great and all, being cold was one of her least favorite things and so she kept time outside short. Since she would be doing a lot of physical activity like casting, skating, and hopefully scoring goals or protecting goals or whatever she would end up doing with the puck, she expected to stay quite warm.
If it wasn't obvious that she was a Hufflepuff, her winter clothes definitely advertised that for her. She was wearing a rainbow puffer vest with daisies on it over a cream sweater, black pants, and pink accessories everywhere... including her skates. The bright sunshiney smile approaching the frozen lake sealed the deal for her Hufflepuff personality advertisement. She enthusiastically waved at Ruka from the edge of the ice as she switched her boots for skates. "Hey Ruka! Great idea!" Once her skates were on, she'd jump onto the ice and skate just a bit to get her bearings on the blades after a year of not skating at all.

It was a cold and windy day on the grounds of Hogwarts as Percy strolled down the path, towards the iced over great lake that many students had great joy on sliding on. In his hand was a leaflet that he found on the wall, one inviting students to a game of hockey. He knew what skating was, but hockey was a totally different puck game. All he knew was that it was of muggle creation, yet for whatever reason it interested him enough to give the rough sport a go.
In his jeans and warm black sweater he finally reaches the bottom and stands on the shore, staring out into the icy lake that seemed to go on forever. For now, he seemed to be the only one to arrive, which was shocking consider he was expecting half of the muggle students to flock down to the location for a chance to play. Sighing, he looked around the ghostly area until he found a familiar face. Ruka Tan was standing in front of the Lake patiently, waiting to formulate a speech to a bunch of people that hadn't seemed to arrive yet "Ruka..." he said with a small nod, not bothering to look at the boy as he folded his arms and awaited for the rest of the participants to arrive "I'm surprised the muggle-borns haven't flocked here yet, considering such a sport was of their creation" he said with a small shake of his head, almost curious to see if he could beat them at their own game.

A flyer left on a table by another student paired with an infinite amount of curiosity had Kazuo writing a letter to his mother requesting, of all things, a pair of skates. He accepted the chiding he received for the short notice - and a reminder that Wizard Post didn't have a Prime option - in exchange for not just a pair of shiny black skates but also a puffy black winter coat and a pair of fleece lined gloves. He donned his new coat, pulling up the fur trimmed hood with a grin as he admired it in the mirror.
A short trek down to the lake with his new skates later, he was examining the hockey sticks and having second thoughts. Though he had learned to skate, it had only been for fun. He had never played any skating sports though he had familiarized himself with the general rules of hockey. Adding spells to the mix was really what had sounded interesting to Kazuo, an element of uniqueness that might actually make the game interesting.
He took a seat at the edge of the lake, lacing up his skates, then picked up one of the hockey sticks and pushed himself out onto the ice, managing to remember most of his lessons and not look like a complete amateur. Though the way he skated seemed more in line with figure skating than hockey skating, the more he warmed up to it, the more comfortable he began to feel.

As much as he had been trying to stay away from him, Flash still basically knew what Ruka was up to. His ears would always perk up when his name would be mentioned through the stream of information. As December rolled around, Flash was in a different place than when the school year started. A better place. It was only natural that what happened over the summer shook him, but he had people who cared about him, people who caught him when he threatened to fall. It was different than his first year, having meaningful relationships had paid off. Now, he was learning what it meant to be involved in the little things, how to have fun.
It was in this mindset that he was pointed to the flyer that had been posted around the school. Ice hockey. He couldn't say he ever played before, but there was an allure he couldn't resist. Physical activity, sport, and teamwork were all draws in and of themselves, but Ruka was another. Perhaps it was as good of an excuse as any, though an itch in the back of his mind made him feel like an imposition. Certainly Ruka would want someone more... versed in the ways of fun. Someone that wouldn't be leering at him from across the way.
Despite his reservations, he knew it was a good idea, deep down. He could tell by the way looking at the flyer made him feel. A kind of happiness, wherever it came from. He wore a bright orange coat to keep him warm in the winter cold, then headed down to the lake where it was being held. There were skates provided, so he would use those. It was thankfully nowhere near his first time on ice, or he would have been too embarrassed to show his face. He expected most kids who had a few run-ins with an ice rink would be around his level.
Once there, it was mostly people he recognized. Henry, the boy who couldn't shut up, Willow, the light of his life and cherished beloved sister, and Percival Gray, the... stuck-up pureblood. Two of them were in the same dorm as him, though of all the Snape boys, they might have been the two he liked least. At least Willow was there, as she always was at these kinds of things. Like Flash, she was drawn to ingenuity and activity. It would be fun playing games with her again, hopefully this one would end a bit less tragically than Shuntbumps.
Silently going up to the house elves to acquire and don some used skates, Flash found his way to Willow's side once he found the balance on the ice. Hooking an arm into hers, he'd hope to skate alongside her a bit and practice with her. The icy wind on his face felt bitter yet refreshing, he knew that once the game really started, it would be a relief from the sweat. He absentmindedly tried not to look over at Ruka too often. What was his problem... either way, he wondered who would end up being on his team. No matter if they were friend or foe, he'd be sure to be the best teammate possible. At least that was something he knew he was good at.

Opeila was far from being a good iceskater, that much was clear. Actually, she only had learned to keep her balance on ice a few days ago, but it went better than expected, so the Slytherin had actually found the courage to go to Ruka's icehockey game.
She had only coincidently heard about the game, from two first years chatting about it while walking past her in a corridor.
Opeila owned iceskates, something the little girl had found a waste for the whole last year where she hadn't used them once. It was something her grandmother had insisted on her to take to Hogwarts, as it was something she used to do every year in her time at Hogwarts. So Opeila took the skates with her.
She had never actually thought that she would use them, but there she was, tying it's laces to enter the lake, the lake. Another thing she thought she would never do, after all, since her first year she couldn't get rid of the feeling that the squid wanted her dead. A childish feeling, but nonetheless.
Entering the ice, she stumbled a little. It had been ten days since she learned to skate, at least a little, and she needed a moment to remember how to do it. But it was really only a moment. Rather slowly she skated over to Flash and Willow, rather changing her direction to slow down, than actually stopping next to them.

The cold winter air felt nice over Lydia's cheeks as she walked outside of the castle; all around her, everything was white, a layer of snow making the landscape look as if it came out of a fairy-tale book. Taking a big breath, the Hufflepuff girl started walking towards her destination.
She had seen the flyers that Ruka had left around the school, and even though she had never properly -or well, ever - played ice hockey, she would never turn down the chance of ice-skating. She didn't have her usual skates, since she did not expect to have any occasion to use them at Hogwarts, and she really hoped that maybe Ruka had a spare pair.
As she approached the frozen lake, Lydia could already see that some people had already gathered there; a small smile tugged on her lips as she thought that, back when she had first met Ruka, she wouldn't have expected him to organise something that involved actually talking to new people. They didn't start in the right way, and it was mostly her fault, but the last time she had talked with the boy things had gone quite well, so who knew, maybe they could have become friends one day, or at least positive acquaintances.
Once she was close enough to recognize faces, Lydia smiled and waved at Willow and Flash, before she reached Ruka. "Hi!" she said, giving the Gryffindor boy a smile, before her eyes noticed the spare skates. "Thank you for organising this," she added, and then proceeded to take a pair of skates and putting them on. That day she was wearing a pair of black, winter sport leggings, those that people that do figure skating would wear when exercising, a blue sweater and a black coat, with her wand safely stored inside of it, the only other touch of colour were the blue earmuffs that she had over her ears.
When she was done tying up the skates, she quickly put her hair up in a messy bun before getting on the ice.

Ice hockey was never on Heinrich's agenda today, his day like every other consisted of walking aimlessly around the school and searching for his missing older sister. The eleven-year-olds' skills of socialising were almost non-existent, he had not made any friends over the past month he'd been in the school. Wandering about on the grounds, Heinrich noticed a few students standing in the middle of the frozen lake from afar. The congregation of students piqued his curiosity indeed. From the land where Heinrich stood, he took note that they were likely playing some sort of game. It could not hurt to take a closer look.
Unfortunately, Heinrich was very wrong to think such as while making his way closer to the game area, the snow that blanketed the ground made him slip and lose his balance. Soon he found himself propelled forwards and tumbling down the hill towards the frozen great lake. His movement created a miniature avalanche of snow which spilt across the icy plane. Upon contact with the great lake, his form skidded across the ice directly and slowed towards one of the goalposts which halted him from sliding further. Before he knew it, he was staring up at a bunch of strangers.
Great. With much effort did Heinrich struggled to his feet. Now after a great deal of inadvertent embarrassment that flushed his face red, he had to go with the flow and participate in whatever game that was set, even if that entitled him to the possibility of further making a fool of himself. If one were to notice, the visage of the blue-eyed boy might vaguely appear familiar to some. Unbeknownst to Heinrich, his sister Aurelia who shared some of his traits was quite well-known around these parts.
Ever so timidly, Heinrich waddled to the boy closest to him whilst trying his best to maintain his balance on the slippery surface. "E-excuse me, do you know where I can find those... uh... shoes? Do they have any magical properties?"

The air was cold and crisp, anything that wasn't covered in snow wearing a thin layer of glittering white frost, and the tip of Dee's nose had started turning pink within two minutes of leaving the castle. She liked the small crunching sounds the frozen snow made beneath her boots with every step, it had her stomping down maybe a little harder than strictly necessary while she made her way down to the lake, a smile on her face, eyes bright with anticipation.
She wasn't the best skater around, could only remember being on the ice once before she'd come to Hogwarts, and that was years ago, but she brought with her an absolute fearlessness of falling - or making a fool of herself. It was akin to why young children learned things like this quicker - they weren't aware of the consequences if they should fall, unafraid to get hurt. While others had crossed over into the stage of self-consciousness, afraid of looking silly, being judged, Dee remained blissfully ignorant. So what if Ruka's attempts at teaching her how to brake had only been semi-successful? You could always brake by tackling your opponents. On the other hand, she'd picked up forward crossovers rather quickly, and had even managed to teach herself how to skate backwards - kind of. Likely wouldn't be very helpful here because she was still slow and awkward, but still: At least forward she had zero concerns picking up breakneck speeds while chasing others around the frozen lake.
When she arrived down at the lake for Ruka's hockey game, bundled up with scarf and hat, hands covered by mittens, there were already a few people around, putting on skates, getting on the ice. She recognised a few faces, Flash was there, Opeila who she'd shared a tent with in summer, and Hufflepuff's duelling captain, Lydia. Ruka earned a brilliant smile and a cheery wave, then Dee spotted the skates she'd worn for her last trip onto the ice, and sat down to get them onto her feet.
Pushing herself onto her feet when she was done, she hopped up and down a little to make sure she'd tied them tightly enough, and picked up her hockey stick, then took the few, ungraceful steps forward across the snow until she slid out onto the ice, the excitement in her chest growing, thrumming. Her wand was stowed securely in her pocket, in reach should she need it. Of course, most people in the game weren't supposed to cast spells, but - who knew? It might come in handy?
