I've Never Played
Reducio
Continued from Picnic at Midnight.
"Come on, let's go!" Grabbing Lorelai's hand, Ami started off towards the Quidditch field from the Great Lake, excited for what was to come- imagine the field! The hoops! The roaring crowd! Well, the stands would be empty, considering it was one in the morning, but moving on.
Upon entering the enormous Quidditch Pitch, Ami slowed her pace considerably and gaped in awe at their surroundings- she couldn't believe her eyes. The field was as big as a football field, maybe even bigger- the stands reached high up into the sky, lined with thousands, hundreds of thousands of seats for hundreds of thousands of spectators. This sport must be huge in the wizarding world. "It's... it's so much bigger than I imagined," Ami said quietly, spinning around in a circle.
Sprinting at full tilt, Ami ran into the center of the pitch, and lay down on the ground, smiling happily at the night sky. "Lorelai, look!" she called excitedly. "You can see the stars from here. Wow... I've never been able to see the stars in the city. Look, there's Vega... Orion... this is flipping incredible." It was true- she'd never been able to see much from downtown Chicago, and she didn't really pay attention much in Astronomy. Only now did she realize just how recluded Hogwarts was- just how disconnected from the world it was. The thought chilled her to her bones, and she shivered involuntarily.

Lorelai looked up at the sky in wonder. "I don't think I've seen this many stars since...well, ever! London doesn't really allow for it. Too much light pollution, that's what my teachers at my muggle school said."She said absently mindedly. She looked at all of the stars, and many consolations she could recognize. She then laughed a bit, realizing something. "You know we could have looked up at the lake too, it's not as if the stars are only visible from here..."
She noticed how massive the Quidditch pitch was, it could easily fit the whole student body and faculty with more room to spare. She imagined how loud and crowded the games must be. That didn't seem so appealing to her. One of the reasons she liked night so much was the fact that there were so few people. And it was quiet. And dark. Overall, there were a lot of reasons to like the night, which is probably why she snuck out so much. Her only hope was she wouldn't get caught. Or at the very least she wouldn't get an owl sent home to her mother. She could survive the scolding of the teachers, not so much her mother.
"Wow its so cool here."She said, laying down with Ami and looking up at the sky. She realized it would be getting light in a few hours, and they'd have to go back. She would be falling asleep all day, but a small price to pay for this view.

Ami laughed as well when she realized that yes, they could've seen the stars from the Great Lake. "Well, we're here now, and I'm not itching to go back to the lake any time soon," she added with a laugh. "Although... do you think we could grab some of the brooms?" Ami asked, her eyes lighting up at the thought of it. "To be fair, I hate Flying- the class, not the action. I'm always just so nervous in front of the whole class."
And what about the pickup game disaster? her insecurities whispered. When you tried to play as Beater? You sucked, remember? Couldn't even hit the Bludger at someone three feet away. What makes you think you'll do any better out here? Grimacing at her negativity, Ami rolled over onto her stomach, looking at Lorelai expectantly. "What do you say? Should we risk breaking the rules- and our necks -for some air time?" She had a general knowledge of where the brooms were kept (in the locker rooms, right?), and she was fairly confident that she could pick her way into any Muggle locks that came up if the need arose. However, if the lock were to be magical, she'd be screwed.

Lorelai wasn't so sure about flying. As much as she liked to break the rules, she didn't really feel like falling to her death. She also wasn't so much a fan of flying class, but for other reasons. Flying was just one of those things that scared her. She was horrified that she would mess up and fall. It was definitely one of her worse classes. And doing it in the dark, with no one who really knew what they were doing, make it a hundred times worse.
"I don't know...This might be a bad idea..."She said, looking away from Ami. "W-what if we got hurt? Besides, I'm sure we won't be able to just get the brooms. I bet they're locked up or hidden somewhere or something. Y-yeah."
It was clear she was unnerved by flying. However, Lorelai was unsure if she would be able to get Ami to back down. She seemed pretty ready to do it. But was flying around a bit, worth the risk of injury? Or death? Or even just getting in trouble? Lorelai didn't feel like it was. What scared her, even more, is that she felt like she could be convinced otherwise. 'This is going to be the death of me.'

Ami hesitated, understanding exactly where Lorelai was coming from. If one of them fell, it would certainly be a pretty story to tell the Matron. And yet, a part of her yearned to soar in the sky, experience the rush of flying without the peer pressure to be perfect. She’d been told of how her mom had been a pretty decent flier herself, although she’d been better at speed-flying, rather than Quidditch. She also wanted to find her strengths, as her mom had done before her, and right now was the perfect time to do so. Yet… Ami groaned softly, tugging at her hair, the two sides of her warring with one another- respecting Lorelai’s wishes and her own at the same time.
She sighed, and said in compromise, “Alright. You don’t have to fly with me, if you don’t want to, but I want a chance to practice without thirty pairs of eyes on me. I’ll see if I can get the lock off, and you can spot me, to make sure I don’t die or anything. And if you want a go, I’ll let you try, and I’ll spot you. If I can’t get the lock off, we’ll figure something else out. Deal?” Ami stuck her hand out for a handshake, contractually “binding”, in this scenario.

Lorelai still felt unsure about the plan, but she didn't have to fly if she didn't want to and having the other person spot checking made her feel better. The last thing she wanted was explaining why this early in the morning, someone had a broken leg, along with many other difficult questions to answer, to one of the schools many intimidating teachers.
"Alright. Where are the broomsticks held? I mean...you know where they are, right?"She asked. Once they found the broomsticks, that is if Ami knew where they were, Lorelai didn't think she'd be of much help. She didn't know any unlocking charms or anything like that, and believe it or not, she didn't know how to pick locks in the muggle way (although she had seen it on tv before). Part of Lorelai hoped they couldn't get the lock open, but the other part a little bit wanted to see what would happen. Flying horrified her, yes, but it also seemed a bit exciting. But she felt that way towards all danger, really. She was ready to take the first opportunity to be face to face with a dragon she could get. That was her kind of danger. Not falling to her death at what... 2 am. Lorelai couldn't tell but it was getting late. She was starting to feel the effects of the time on herself, covering a yawn with her hand.

Ami hesitated at Lorelai's question because honestly, she didn't know. Every time she'd actually been out here on the pitch, someone else had provided brooms from out of thin air for her. "Vaguely," she said reassuringly. "I'll be back." She stood up, stretching her arms, and headed off towards the direction of the locker rooms. Taking a peeking inside (the doors were unlocked, odd) confirmed that there were no brooms there, so she jiggled the handle of the room next to Professor Swaftborn's office. To her satisfaction, it was locked- that meant something of reasonable value was in there.
Patting down her pockets, all Ami could find on her was her knife- a thin, silver blade with an equally thin wooden handle. Should one be an expert on knives, they'd recognize it as a misericord. Shifting the knife in her hand, she slivered off a long shiv off the door-frame. Before you could say, "Ami, don't!", she had the lock shimmied and the door was swinging open. She whooped and hollered with laughter as she saw the stack of brooms sitting in the corner, and ran over to grab one. "Hey- Lorelai!" she called, running back over to the Gryffindor. "Jackpot!" she crowed, mounting the broom and taking off. "Spot me, 'kay?" Ami called, flying around in circles and loop-de-loops.

"O-okay..."Lorelai said, watching her friend run off to the locker rooms to look for the broomsticks. She peeked in but didn't come out with anything. Lorelai sighed in relief, maybe this wouldn't happen after all. However, Ami just went over to Professor Swiftborn's office, making Lorelai sigh. This try proved to be more fruitful than the first go. Before Lorelai knew it, the Hufflepuff had taken flight. Lorelai was reminded she needed to spot check. Unfortunately,Lorelai didn't' really know if she could help, she didn't really have enough knowledge or experience to know when Ami was doing anything wrong. Despite this, Lorelai kept her head up, looking at the flying girl. 'My neck is gonna hurt after this'She complained in her head.
She was actually quite impressed with the loops the girl was doing. "Wow! You're actually really good at flying!"She cheered from the ground. Maybe it would all be fine. Maybe no one would get hurt and they would just sneak back into the castle. Lorelai had just started to relax when she noticed something else in the air. Her eyes widened. There was a rather large bird flying directly into the path of Ami, and it didn't seem like she was seeing it. "Ami!"She called out desperately. "Look out for that bird!" Oh god, what was she going to say to the nurse?

Ami let out a long string of curse words at Lorelai's words. A bird? At two in the morning? You've got to be kidding me. What kind of bird wakes up at two in the morning to fly around a freaking quidditch pitch? she thought with a grimace, but sure enough, there was a massive falcon flying in Ami's direction- to specific, right at her face. "What the hell?!" she shrieked, and really, all she could do was roll off her broom and hang on for dear life as she tried to bring herself down to the ground.
"Ah, frick," she hissed, wrenching herself back onto the broom just as she was about to hit the ground. Both Ami and the broom skidded to a halt on the ground, tearing up a rather noticeable trench in the pitch. Wincing, the Hufflepuff gingerly stepped off her broom and examined her ankles with a cringing expression, as they had taken the burden of the crash.
"Shit," she mumbled, going pale. "I don't mean to scare you, Lorelai, but I don't ankles are supposed to swell, are they?" Ami mumbled, staring in shock at her bruised ankle. "Frick. I must've sprained it, or something."

She watched in horror as Ami almost hit the animal. Luckily she didn't but she landed rather ungracefully, concerned Lorelai"I don't want to say I told you so, but I told you so."She sighed, running across the field to Ami's side. She glanced at the sky. It was almost day, they would have to get inside soon, or they would definitely be caught by a teacher. And Lorelai didn't know how to get Ami inside without her walking. She took a look at the girl's injured ankle. It didn't look too good.
"It looks like it might be sprained, but I'm not sure. Do you think you can walk?"Lorelai asked, concerned. Lorelai was concerned that this was something that Ami wouldn't be able to let heal on its own, that she'd have no other choice than to go to the nurse. 'Maybe she won't question why she hurt her ankle though? I doubt it...'
Lorelai got closer to Ami, observing the sprained ankle. She winced a bit. It looked like it hurt. She straightened herself up, looking at Ami. She knew she should have trusted her instincts. She felt like this was so avoidable.'Then again I did agree to it, so I can't really say I did much to stop it.'
