The day was glorious; Just cloudy enough to provide shelter from the overly oppressive fireball in the sky, but still enough light so that it wasn't TOO dark. I was before Midday; about 9:00 am, so the temperature was perfect. Furthermore, according to the results of five different weather divinations, the temperature would stay nice and cool all day.
A lot of planning went into this. The great Council of Captains had assembled numerous times to discuss when this was going to go down, trying to line up the schedules to where it would be a good day on a day off to do this.
The Hufflepuff captains rarely had attended, however. They were far too busy preparing to humiliate Durmstrang in their upcoming game.
This was fine with the rest of the captains, likely due to their feelings of resentment at not taking the Cup. Particularly a young, barefooted, Irish captain, who hated losing above most other things.

Finally, the day arrived. The weather and temperature were perfect, it was a day off, and no one was being attacked by spiders, or mosps, or drugged out Gryffindor Gremlin Children, or assholes named Vladimir Anthanatos.

The two teams had finished readying themselves, and began to come out onto the pitch. There was very little, if any, spectators, much to one captain's relief. He always got mild anxiety whenever he played in front of a crowd.

Dan flew out on his Swiftstick, wearing his full Quidditch outfit. Full of course, except for the shoes. It felt good to be back in Quidditch. It felt right. This was a great idea to get people's minds off of things. This was particularly needed after the disaster that was the Blossom Ball, and Slytherin needed it even more after what had happened in the London Quidditch Field.

Then, his competitiveness reared itself. He had defeated Ravenclaw twice now. This time would be no different.

Elspeth was notoriously early for things, having a near constant fear that she might put someone out if she showed up a little late. Which meant that as she approached the pitch she could clearly see that she was one of the first from the Ravenclaw team to arrive. Which was awkward, as this was her first game as a player on the Quidditch team so she wasn't entirely sure what she was supposed to be doing. She could see, across the pitch from her, one of the Slytherin team members was out on his broom warming up. The school broom in her hands felt worn from years of use, and she only added to that wearing by rubbing her hands on it nervously, her knuckles a little white from the pressure.

While she'd grown up watching the Holyhead Harpies play down in Wales with her parents, she'd not actually spent much time on a broom before coming to Hogwarts. In her head she dreamed of being a strong, confident player, the kind who would zoom onto the pitch with such fervor that people in the audience would wonder how she got to be so cool. Putting her name on the sign up sheet in the common room had been done in a sort of, hopeful wish fulfillment type way. The team had plenty of players on it at the time, she thought that she'd have a year or two to wait and train before having the chance to try out. But. Here she was, standing in the entrance, wearing her new team robes, and holding on to the school broom she'd been practicing with on weekends since making the team.

It's just a practice game. You're gonna do fine. No one is expecting you to come out of the box a champion. Plus, Cecily is gonna be there for you. Cecily was Elspeth's prefect. They hadn't spent much, if any, time together that school year. But Elspeth saw her in the halls and had secretly admired her as a responsible student and athlete. She had the kind of confidence that Elspeth wished she could have. And she doesn't think you're a complete weirdo with no hope so... remember that.

She nodded her head in response to herself. "Right," as if she'd been pepped up by someone outside of herself, Elspeth felt ready to get up in the air. Her legs straddled the broom as she hopped off the ground and slowly began to ascend. There were a few wobbles on the way up, but she was happy to see that she had, in fact, made it up, and wasn't about to fall off. Pointing her broom to follow Dan's lead she waited until he passed by to give herself the most time before he inevitably lapped her.
