When she was younger Adalacia's mum would lock them in a room together and force her to learn differing charms, something she was never any good at but her mother excelled exponentially with. Sometimes Adalacia wondered if her mum was really her mum; tall, with an athletic build and beautiful flowing almost silver hair. Adalacia was small, dainty and her hair was a tangled mess of chestnut waves; her eyes were as piercing as her mother, but a swirling acid green rather than a hard cerulean blue. They had always butted heads, both prideful and headstrong in their own ways it was impossible for both of them to be right. Yet there was one thing Adalacia could credit her mother on, and it was her perseverance in teaching her daughter magic the right way. Even if charms didn't take to her the way she'd hoped (if only to make her mother proud for once) she was competent enough to keep up in class.
Their charms teacher, Professor Blackburn, was also Adalacia's head of house (Gryffindor.) He was a kind man, with an even disposition; easy to learn from if anything. Moments before they'd learnt a simple incantation, Alohomora, used to unlock... well locks. Her mother had taught her the spell years ago, and so Adalacia figured when it came to actually putting the spell to use in class it would be an easy feat. She over-estimated herself, definitely her pesky nerves ruining her so far okay day as her wrist flicked her wand back and forth at the small locked box in front of her, repeating the charm over and over, receiving no positive outcome no matter how hard she tried.
She just wanted to sink into the floor and disappear forever, if she were being completely honest. How pathetic.

James focused hard on the lock in front of him.
If I stare at the lock really hard, it'll burst into flames and melt. James thought. He then chuckled at the muggle movie quote, and redirected his attention to his wand and the spell he was trying to do.
He had only seen it done once before, and that was someone else doing it to unlock a cupboard. James looked down at his hurriedly scratched notes on the spell, and mouthed the incantation while tracing the wand movement with his fore finger. After some careful observation of the gesture, James realized it looked like a scribbled shape of an unlocked lock.
"Alohomora..." James whispered under his breath. It seemed simple enough, but James knew just a little better than that. Though he had only learned two spells so far (Wingardium Leviosa and Expelliarmus), he still had learned that there was more to casting spells than saying some funny sounding words and waving a wand around.
He had been surprised with how much he had already been able to do at this school, considering how he was raised entirely muggle and without knowledge of magic. So far, his musical knowledge and his experience of being on a stage had been the things to help him complete the two previous spells he had learned. But he couldn't think of anything to help him out with learning to magically unlock something.
It was then that James looked up and saw another young student, who looked rather.... "witch-y", for lack of a better term. No! "Magically Capable" was the phrase James had been looking for.
James grabbed his locked box and made his way over to her.

It had been almost a half hour of listening to the class around her mumble the Alohomora incantation over and over again, watching with distaste as one after the other they unlocked their boxes (some even on their first try!) but her? Nope, of course not, her stupid little box remained locked and undeterred by her constant spell casting; alas she continued on, and with every flick of her wand she muttered obscenities, doing her best to ignore the little mocking whispers of students sitting just behind her.
"Isn't she from a pure-blood family?"
"You'd think she'd know what she was doing..."
"Yeah, really!"
Just like her father would tell her, there is no use in allowing people's opinions get to you, because those who care about what other's are doing have little to no focus on themselves to begin with... so she continued with her endeavors relentlessly despite her sinking heart and growing anxiety - that was until she noticed a young Hufflepuff boy approaching her directly with a wide smile and locked box in hand. She wasn't sure what he wanted exactly, but figured it couldn't be good; from what she'd been told Hufflepuff's were relatively kind in nature, but she wouldn't put it past anyone to confront her about her embarrassing lack of talent with the unlocking charm.
So with lightning speed, and an ever growing blush dusting her cheeks Adalacia grabbed her Charms textbook and flipped it up on its side to her left, opening it up to hide her work space from the approaching boy, hoping it would effectively deter him.

James realized as he was approaching the Gryffindor girl, that it might seem a little bit weird of him to be doing so randomly and without any reason. It was then, as James was thinking it, that he heard someone behind the girl he was currently heading towards whisper about her.
"Isn't she from a pure-blood family?"
James was instantly a little more comforted by this, and it gave him some more hope that this girl could help him. James wasn't sure if she had seen him coming, or if it was just a coincidence that she suddenly grabbed her Charms textbook and flipped it up on its side to her left, opening it up to hide her work space effectively from James. James was a little deterred, but reasoned that she might not have done that intentionally to slow him down.
James slid into the empty seat next to her, before realizing he probably should have asked first.
"Oh, um, is it okay if I sit here?" James asked, thankful it had sounded natural enough. He gestured to the seat he was already occupying, looking over at her expectantly, waiting for a response to come from the girl, who seemed a bit shy.

Her book barrier worked to no avail, the young boy absently asking her if he could sit beside her despite the fact that he had already taken a seat. With a slow breath in Adalacia grabbed her textbook and lowered it to a flattened position, attempting to plaster a welcoming smile on her normally stoic features, but she knew it came off more strained than anything; it wasn't that she didn't want to meet and befriend other people, she was just horrifyingly shy. She supposed it was her mother in her that made her seem cold when she was just trying to guard herself appropriately to avoid any awkward situations, but it didn't help with socializing in the least.
"Y-yeah, of course." She muttered quietly, tentatively wrapping her fingers around her wand once more. It was harder now with a direct audience watching her every move, harder to work up the nerve to try and unlock the box again that is; her nerves were paralyzing, and she could feel her faux confident facade crumbling under the pressure of gossiping students behind her, and the polite boy watching from beside her.
Why did he have to come and sit by me, of all people! She thought, fingers tightening their grip on her wand so much her knuckles began to turn white.

No, I don't mind. I don't know about Adalacia, but the thread isn't closed...
James watched as the girl slowly brought her book down and forced a smile. James resisted reacting negatively to it, because just watching her try to stick on a fake smile made it obvious that the smile was very brittle and fragile, and her composure probably was too...
"Y-yeah, of course." She muttered quietly.
James smiled gratefully.
"Thanks!" he replied.
James sat down, settling into the seat next to her and placing his locked box on the top of the table in front of him. He slid his bag from off of his shoulder and dropped it down with a thud next to where he sat. He then turned to the girl, hoping to socialize.
"Hi. My name is James. What's yours?" he asked, hoping not to intimidate her. He smiled softly, and stayed leaned back in his seat, so as to not have an intimidating posture. He didn't lean back too far, though, avoiding looking like a slumping teen. He just sat in a natural and relaxed position.
He realized he was still gripping his wand, and realizing that might be a sign to be wary, he set it down next to his locked box.

She nodded curtly at his thanks, smile faltering ever so slightly, revealing a confused frown for a split few seconds at his overtly kind tone. For the whole two weeks she'd been here Adalacia truly hadn't been approached with such kindness; yet she didn't allow herself to dwell on the sentimental thought too long, shaking her head gently and reverting her full attention back to her locked box, brows furrowing in an attempt at concentration.
But then he spoke up again, introducing himself as James. She supposed it would be impolite to ignore him, so she opened her mouth to respond and what was supposed to be a simple sentence came out (embarrassingly enough) as a stutter, of all things! "M-my name's Adalacia." What a ridiculous way to introduce yourself, you're a Gryffindor, act like it! She chastised herself inwardly, bottom lip finding its way between her teeth as she chewed on it nervously "But I usually go by Lacy, it's a lot simpler to say." Okay, now you're doing a little better. He's just being friendly, stay calm and be nice!
Sometimes it made it hard to make friends when she immediately roused barriers upon meeting new people, but it was the only way she'd been able to effectively shield herself from the cruel comments of her upperclassmen who knew about her pure-blood status and name, but watched her botch something as simple as an unlocking charm time and time again. Nonetheless, James the Hufflepuff seemed nice and she wasn't going to scare him away just because she was afraid he might judge her.
