Just a Peek PV: Grace Mint Abandoned

Potions was the only class that Eyre was truly fond of in the list of classes that his parents had been pushing him to succeed in. It tied into his interest in Herbology well, which gave him a good understanding of what he was working with, and the prospect of creating interesting elixirs was fascinating to him because there wasn't a type of magic quite like it.

To keep up on classwork, he created a journal that was full of all of the spell ingredients that he would need, neatly indexed and color coded with different shades of ink. Being able to put his quill to the paper was relaxing in a way, so as soon as he received the money to do so he purchased a second identical journal. Admittedly, he was so confident in his understanding of the lectures and homework that he would often write in his journal during class.

Eyre felt that it was justified. He was going through a lot, what with his parents' non-existent letters and his increasing conflict between doing what he wanted and doing what his family wanted. If he wanted to journal in class, he'd allow himself to journal in class. He figured that it was acceptable as long as he was being a good partner to his tablemate, Grace Mint, when it was time to actually get to work.

Grace and Eyre had been paired up to work on the Babbling Beverage assignment for class. They hadn't talked much outside of assignments because they both were naturally quiet people, but Eyre enjoyed having her as a tablemate because of how dedicated she was to learning the material.

Ontop of that, he might've had a small crush on her.

He wasn't the type to gawk at people, but at the same time Eyre hadn't been around a lot of metamorphmagus girls in his life, either. As any 12 going on 13 year old boy would, he would often catch himself staring a little bit too long at the girl as her hair and eyes changed depending on her mood. He had to snap himself out of it far too many times. Whenever he would catch himself daydreaming of her, he would take a note of it in his journal:
Caught myself staring at Grace again. I can't help it, her hair just becomes so pretty when she's embarrassed.
When he'd think about what he was doing, it was a bit embarrassing. If she had gotten a hold of his journal and saw that he was interested in her, it would be humiliating. But, he knew deep down that this wouldn't happen. After all, she didn't seem like the kind of person that liked to snoop around in places that she wasn't supposed to.

___

April 29th, 2019. Eyre and Grace were on their 5th attempt of trying to brew the Babbling Beverage. Their materials were strewn all over their table, with Eyre's journal and his potions journal lying next to each other. He was using his potions journal to look at the ingredients for the recipe, and was quite frustrated that the measurements weren't quite right on his Angel's Trumpet Essence.

Getting the potion wrong wasn't the only thing that was annoying him that day. He'd received the first and only letter that his parents had sent him during his time at Hogwarts the day before, which completely dashed his mood for easily the rest of the school year. His father had seen his E grades in the classes that he and his mother had told him to focus on (sans potions), and chided him for his otherwise excellent grade in Herbology. His father compared him to his sister Rhea, like he always did, saying that he had no chance being an Auror someday if he kept focusing on nonsensical topics like Herbology, "for Merlin's sake."

In response to this letter, he had angrily pasted it in the journal along with a long, strongly worded (and crudely worded) response in which he denounced his parents, and said that his dad and sisters could stick a broomstick up their collective arses in regards to telling him what HE wanted to do with HIS school career. Such letter was cathartic to make, but it didn't solve the situation. He was still carrying that baggage-figuratively and literally- into class with him that day.

Suddenly, the problem with the potion clicked when he had decided to look at the ingredients that the other people in the class were using instead of his loopy cursive handwriting.

"We've been using the wrong essence this entire time. It's supposed to be Hemlock Essence diluted, not Angel's Trumpet." He groaned softly, rubbing the sweat off of his forehead. "Right. I'm going to go to the cupboard and get what we really need... Be right back." He said. In a rush to get the materials before it was too late to finish their attempt, he had left his personal journal behind on the table, vulnerable and begging to be opened by a interested stranger.

Grace loved Potions, well, she loved every class actually.

The Ravenclaw was writing down notes whenever she had the chance to so she could study.

Grace’s long dirty blonde hair was in a neat ponytail, and it would always move around when she moved her head, or raised her hand.

She looked at the boy sitting beside her, Eyre, and smiled at him kindly, but you could tell she was embarrassed because her hair slightly turned ombré bubblegum pink and her eyes turned pink for a second.

Grace turned her head back to the professor, her hair was back to dirty blonde and here eyes were her normal light blue.

The Ravenclaw finished with her notes, she had everything she needed down on paper with her neat handwriting.

For an assignment, Grace got paired up with Eyre to do a potion.

APRIL 29TH, 2019

Grace groaned, and hid her face in her hands.

Eyre and Grace tried so many times to get the potion right.

“What did we do wrong!?” Grace said, trying not to cry.

Grace was used to finishing her work fast, but this potion was hard.

Her hair was out of a ponytail, and extremely messy, she was starting to look like her 5 year old self with busy hair.

Grace sighed, and glared at her journal like it was it’s fault.

Grace felt like screaming “YOU STUPID PAPER FILLED COVER”

But then Eyre knew already, Grace finally smiled after all the hard try’s, they finally knew what they missed.

As Eyre left Grace looked at the journal he left out in the open.

She tried to hold back, but her nosy side took over, Grace made sure Eyre wasn’t looking, and she opened it.

As she read through, her eyes widened more.

The she dropped the book.

Eyre had a crush on her.

Eyre came back with the bottle of essence in his hand, placing it down proudly onto the table. He hadn't noticed that his journal had left the spot where it was previously, and at this point, he didn't care. He was pumped to finish the project after all this time, and he knew that if he wanted to brew it right, he needed to give the contents in the cauldron his upmost attention.

The potion was supposed to turn reddish-orange once all of the ingredients were combined correctly, something that it was missing each time they'd attempt to brew it. Eyre had to empty out the cauldron before they started again, adding the crushed up Alihosty leaves and other ingredients before measuring out the Hemlock essence with a spoon.

"One... two...three..." He counted to himself, pouring it into the cauldron before giving it a stir. The vibrant color came to the forefront, letting them know that they had achieved the correct potion. Eyre let out a sound of surprise, his face erupting into a large grin. At long last, they'd done it, and they could finally celebrate.

"We did it! We finally did it!" He said, turning to Grace. He stopped, noticing her nervous expression, and laughed. "No need to be nervous. You look like I might've grabbed explosive fluid instead!"

Grace was about to put the journal back in the place Eyre put it, but then heard footsteps.

Grace gasped, was Eyre going to notice that his journal wasn’t in the same spot?

Eyre didn’t seem to care as they emptied the cauldron and restarted the potion.

Grace was quiet the whole time, just adding the ingredients and nothing else.

The small Ravenclaw let Eyre do the last things.

When he finished and it worked, he noticed Grace’s nervous expression, she was fidgeting.

Grace was nervous for 2 separate reasons.

1. She was worried the potion was going to fail and/or explode.

2. She read Eyre’s journal! And he might notice!

“W-We s-should clean t-this up...” Grace told Eyre, with her more nervous, squeaky voice.

Grace began to clean the mess on their table, putting them in piles and stacks.

She sighed and felt a bit sick, she didn’t know if it was the potions stuff or her nervousness.

Grace took a deep breath, her brain was processing too much information.

The Ravenclaw never looked at Eyre while cleaning up the table, once everything was in neat piles and stacks for them to put away, she grabbed the bag she takes with her everywhere, squeezing the straps extremely hard.

Eyre was confused as to why his tablemate was acting so nervous. He thought she was going to be overjoyed that they'd done it correctly after nearly an hour and a half of messing up, but instead he was met with frightened looking yellow eyes that were rushing him to clean up their station.

"Oh, uh. Of course." He said, beginning to empty the cauldron again as he tried to wrap his head around what he had done that made her so anxious. Was she late for an exam?

Once they were finished cleaning their immediate area, he started to gather his things. For some reason, his journal was gone. He began to panic for a moment, shuffling around his papers and looking into his bag before he realized that it was under Grace's desk.

Suddenly, things began to click into place. He looked away from her for a moment, his eyebrows furrowing and his mouth opening in horror before he turned back to her, trying to keep calm.

"You... didn't...Did you?" He trailed off, gesturing towards his journal. Something about the look in her eyes said everything that he needed to know. His face became pale as a sheet, and his heart began to thump in his chest.

"B-Bu-bu-but...Why?! Wh-What did you read?!" He blubbered. It was almost as if he, himself had drank the potion in front of him."I...I can explain...I...uh..."

Grace was beginning to leave, but she noticed Eyre was looking for his journal.

Grace’s eyes widened when Eyre noticed that the journal was under her desk.

Tears formed in Grace’s eyes.

Eyre was asking many questions, Grace needed an excuse.

“I- umm t-there was a...a giant bug!” she lied “I just used t-the first thing I-I saw!” it was a pretty good lie since Grace hated bugs.

Grace quickly picked the journal and handed it to Eyre, she packed her bag quicker.

Since Eyre was taller than Grace, she looked up at him “I’m sorry” she told him and grabbed her study notes journal, she began to flip through it for her next classes notes.

“Damn it... I took the wrong journal! This is my other one!” she muttered.

Grace did have 2 journals like Eyre, one for her studying needs and one for her private stuff.

Today, Grace forgot her study notes and took her other journal instead, she was probably rushing.

Grace groaned and put it in her bag.

Grace wasn’t completely embarrassed about her journal, but she hated showing how “nerdy” she was.

Her journal was filled with everything about school, and classes.

The tears that formed in Grace’s eyes started rolling down her cheeks, she felt so bad about reading Eyre’s journal.

Eyre had some time to recover as Grace gave her excuse, seeing the Ravenclaw fumble to choose the right notebook. He noticed that she must've been overwhelmed, because she noticed how her hair had changed again from blonde to blue.

"Hey..." He said from behind her, hoping that his voice wasn't too firm. For someone who was a pretty soft and understanding person, he knew that he had a hot-head. Probably just from years of being teased by his sisters for being the youngest. "If you read my journal... It's fine." He said. "It's just.. I've been going through a lot. I don't even know what you saw..."

It was true. He didn't know what she saw. Was she horrified over the goofy crush stuff, or the nasty letter that he had wrote to his parents? He didn't want to have a reputation as an aggressive person, especially since he was seen by most people as quite the opposite, and the letter had definitely shed an uncharacteristic light on him. In all honesty, he'd be less horrified if she read the compliments he'd wrote about her.

"...What...did you see?" He asked rather awkwardly. His next question lacked subtlety, and he internally kicked himself after the words left his mouth. "You didn't.. read that letter, did you?"

@Eyre Reeves

Tears were flowing down her face, her hair and eyes were showing that she was sad.

"I-I didn't mean to r-read it! I know I'm dumb! I'm s-sorry..." Grace cried, she regretted everything she did.

She wiped her tears and remembered something her cousin told her "Grace, never bottle up your emotions, let it out, no matter how crazy it is"

Grace sighed "I read the whole thing... but I really didn't mean to...." she squeaked, her hands and legs were trembling.

She picked up a book from the table, it was her favorite book from the muggle world, she was quite embarrassed by it though, it was a romance book called Twilight, Grace blushed when the cover was showing, and quickly shoved it in her bag.

"What letter? ....oh that letter" Grace quickly remembered "Are you ashamed by it or something?" she raised an eyebrow.

Grace knew Eyre for a bit since they were tablemates, and she knew him as a pretty sweet guy, so she was a tiny bit surprised, but Grace knew he was just having some family problems or something.

She tucked her hair behind her ear (which still showed she was sad) and sighed "D-do you forgive me?"
