Professor’s Office
The office that came with his new position was small but he found it quite cosy. The centre of the room was dominated by the dark walnut desk, and two of the four walls were lined in bookshelves yet only four fifths of them were filled. (They would fill up further in time; it was always good to leave some space on a book shelf for future acquisitions.) On one of the empty walls was a big picture of a desert landscape whose inhabitant currently lingered elsewhere.
He had made sure that the three chairs – one behind the desk and two in front, in case a student or two had cause to visit, needing advice or being due a detention – were comfortable enough but not too much and he’d added a small two-seater couch in the corner opposite the book shelves. A small cabinet next to it and an equally small fireplace completed the room’s setup.
He had never tended to keep many knickknacks leaving his desk bare apart from two picture frames facing toward his chair and a steaming tea set. The warm scent of tea permeated the room as Zahid grabbed one of the books off the shelves to settle at his desk to take some notes in preparation of his next lesson.
He could not help occasionally glancing toward the closed door. In the beginning it had felt unfamiliar and almost wrong to have his door closed when there might be students that needed to speak to him for some reason – at the University his office door had only been closed if he had appointment or if he was not within. But a boarding school did not have fixed working hours in the same way and the students could knock, after all. Given that he taught History of Magic and not one of the more ‘important’ subjects, he had not expected that many students to find their way here and so far that had remained true.
