On the Purity of Blood
12th March, 2021History of Magic. Not the most riveting subject by any means, but nonetheless one that Gabriella found she was relatively good at, especially the essays. In fact she had met her best friend, Gia Adelard, helping her with her History of Magic homework, and she had loved every minute of it - essays, it seemed, were a lot more fun when you did them with a friend. Gabriella frowned. She hadn't met Gia since her friend's twelfth birthday party, but that was ok. They could still have a strong friendship without seeing each other every day, couldn't they? Besides, they had arranged to do the upcoming Dance of the Bushpeople errand together, and Gabby couldn't wait.
Today in class, in fact, the first-years were writing an essay similar in length and substance to the one that Gabriella had helped Gia with back in January. The title was The wizarding hierarchy in the nineteenth century was mainly down to blood purity - Discuss, and Gabriella knew just what she was going to write. They had been given the rest of the double lesson to write it; she should easily be finished on time. Then she could carry on with the portrait of Gia she had been hoping to surprise her friend with - if only she had thought of that in time for Gia's birthday...
She dipped her quill in her ink, trying not to spill the bottle as she so often did, and put her quill to the parchment, writing her opening paragraph in her neatest handwriting. The words flowed easily from her quill, and, with the structured plan that she had, Gabby knew she would definitely be finished early.
Writing generally wasn't one of Gabriella's main strong points. Back when she had started at Hogwarts in September, Gabby had considered herself to be a writer, and "officially", that was still how she identified. But in the bottom of her heart she knew that creative writing wasn't really one of her main talents, and that she was actually good at painting and art instead. Essay-writing, however, didn't seem to be on the same tier as creative writing, and it was something she could do very well at. Which was a good thing, she supposed - you needed to do a lot of essays to pass the OWLs and NEWTs, but never any creative writing. And there weren't really any wizarding career prospects in creative writing, anyhow. So on balance, it was definitely better this way round, Gabby decided.
Suddenly, the Ravenclaw heard a groan from the desk behind her. She turned her head to see a girl in her house with pink hair and a giant frown on her face. Evidently, the girl was having difficulties. Gabriella had seen this girl around, but they had never spoken - maybe now was the time to kindle a new friendship?

"Hi," said Gabby, leaning back on her chair so that the girl could see her better. "I'm Gabriella Haworth, call me Gabby. Ravenclaw. Muggle-born. Do you need any help? I can see you're struggling a bit..."
She smiled at the girl, hoping she didn't come off as too blunt, and awaited her response.Word count: 550
