Where Did You Go? Solo Finished

Lucette huffed, running down the halls. Sure, she was no longer a prefect, but she still wanted to converse with her Head of House. She had so much to say, so much to tell just him. Luce wanted him to be her mentor. She wanted him to be proud of her. She wanted him to help her work her way up to dueling her sister. Lucette's heart soared, her eyes puffy from crying just an hour prior when she resigned, a new flame burning in her soul. She was through with being in her sister's shadow. All of her friends around her made her see she was more than just leftovers. Sawyer Mellowrose made her see she was more than just leftovers. He made her believe she was more than just an unskilled tween. She needed to thank him.

She didn't understand it, but he was like a father to her: grumpy, strict, yet with a heart of gold. All the days she spent with the adult made her feel that connection she had been missing from her life; He was the first parental figure she felt truly cared. She couldn't ever pay him back for that. Not even all the blankets and cookies in the world could ever express how happy he made this little eleven-year-old feel. She had to tell him, at least.

Lucette skidded to a stop in front of the classroom door; she had memorized when and where he liked to doze off. She knocked on the door with light taps, bouncing on her feet. She stood in silence for a few moments, waiting for Sawyer to snore loudly to let her in. The Snorzeltongue spoke with his snores, and Lucette had been picking up on a few cues, like if his snore was a certain pitch he was indicating a certain emotion. His snores were often a low grumble, resembling thunder, and she would always snicker whenever they were directed at other students; They were snores of annoyance and/or discontent. She was learning his little quirks here and there, their bond growing stronger and stronger by the day. But, this day was a bit off.

No snore shook the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, not even a regular, non-speaking snore. Lucette gritted her teeth. He only did that if he just fell asleep, so she hopefully had enough time to talk with him. Tell him everything, everything she wanted to. Tell him about her home life, and how the two of them would change that. Tell him how much he was like a father to her. Tell him how much she cared. Lucette pushed the door open, her voice soft and cheery. "Wake up, Mellow! I have something to tell you! Saw-"

Silence. The room was.. empty. Well, not completely, but everything she recognized as Sawyer's was.. gone. No pillow, no sleeping mask, none of his messy papers that adorned his desk. None of his ignored cobwebs, no small bed in the back for his cat, no extra blankets, no jars of cookies, just... nothing. Lucette's heart dropped into her chest, panicking. Where did he go? She knew he wasn't in his office; He wouldn't be in that stuffy room at this time of day. She walked over to his desk. Then she saw it: the new nametag. Tears quickly came to blur her vision as she read the words printed on them: Leonie Scheinberg, Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor and Slytherin Head of House.

Lucette let out a shriek, stumbling backward to support herself on a desk behind her. Her hand went to her mouth, stifling the rest of her shocked cries; Where did she come from? What happened to Sawyer? Why is he... not here anymore? Betrayal sunk into her already heavy heart; Why didn't he bother to say goodbye? Did she not matter to him? Why no hug, why no talk, why no owl, why no... anything? She curled up, sobbing louder into her hands, ignoring the rain of tears that stained her skin and clothing. And just like that, another parental figure was no longer part of her life. Why... why wasn't she good enough for anyone to stick around? She didn't bother to wipe away the mess she was making as Lucette allowed gravity to force her to the floor. She couldn't bring herself to hate anybody. Anybody... expect herself. She didn't get to tell him anything. She never got the chance to say goodbye.

And with that, the flame in her soul was snuffed out as quick as it was lit.
