Aleksandar Panchev
|
Appearance:
Aleksandar has inherited his father’s icy blue eyes and sharp facial features. His complexion is remarkably pale and often commented on. His dark brown hair shines black like his mother’s in the right light and is kept not too short, sweeping bangs across his forehead. He is tall, verging on lanky, but carries himself with the confidence his father has ingrained in him. Despite the fact that his father belongs to a renowned Pureblood family, Ale does not adhere to the dress code constantly imposed on him by them in his free time. Instead of suits and silk, he is often seen in casual t-shirts and hoodies, though they are always in pristine condition and never make him look sloppy.
Personality:
While he is in no way a social butterfly, Ale likes to surround himself with people. He enjoys company more than solitude, though will be selective with the people he allows around him. “Nice” would not be a word anyone might want to describe him with, despite the fact that he is well liked by his teachers.
Aleksandar is polite when the situation calls for him to be, but he is blunt and occasionally cruel when communicating with his peers. Arrogance displays itself in the way he talks and carries himself. He is a top student with a keen interest in continuing his education at Durmstrang beyond his fifth year to specialise in the field of enchanters.
Wandmaking is something he is particularly interested in as he feels that Wandmakers are the ones to develop and improve the path to power. Eager to learn how to channel magic through such unsuspicious devices, Ale has grown ambitious and will not be considerate of those in his way of achieving what he might be after. Aleksandar is used to a certain standard of living and will not allow for anything below that without complaint. His upbringing has filled him with a severe dislike for Muggles and Muggleborns and he will make sure that is known to everyone around him.
History:
Aleksandar Simeon Panchev was born to Half-Blood witch Aria Valov and Pureblood wizard Mihail Panchev in the small town of Lovech in Bulgaria. A child born out of wedlock was a scandal in the making for the Panchev family, just like the fact that said child’s mother was only wizard born and not a Pureblood, so Mihail at least claimed to have wedded Aria in private. Aria had not taken well to the lie and had fled back to her childhood home in Ireland, only to return months later to agree to marry Mihail in exchange for financial security. Thus, Ale grew up with both parents in his life, though neither of them were around often. Instead he was raised by a constant stream of English and French au-pairs which has honed his language skills.
Growing up, Aleksandar was always expected to show signs of magic early on, so his father had grown restless and impatient when at the age of seven his son still appeared to be a normal child without any obvious powers. Mihail had employed trainers to do what they could to force magic out of Aleksandar, like forcing him to eat things he had no particular taste for, or taking away his favourite toys and books at random intervals to upset him. It was not until his eight birthday, that he finally showed his first traces of magic; One of his trainers had taken Ale to his room to calm down from a temper tantrum and had locked the door to let the child cry it out on his own. A few minutes in, the power had cut, leaving Aleksandar in darkness for a moment, before the door to his room exploded into a million tiny pieces.
The acceptance to Durmstrang had come as no surprise, as Mihail himself, as well as the rest of his family had all attended the institute.
Ale was eager to start his education, convinced that furthering his skill would gain him more of his father’s approval, so his school work had become the most important part of his life for the subsequent years.
Upon getting the chance to visit Hogwarts, Aleksandar had been quick to take it as he had just recently learned of his half brother who was likely attending the British Institute. What he would do with his lost sibling once he found him was yet to be decided.

Aleksandar is a wizard-born to a Pureblood father and a half blood mother and as such is disrupting the Pureblood line of the Panchev family, which his family considered to be almost as scandalous as the fact that the boy had been born out of wedlock. Because of that, his father has always expected more than just average of him. Anything Aleksandar touched he was supposed to perfect; Any skill was useless if it was only half developed, nothing was worthwhile as long as there were other people who were superior in any way. Already as a young kid, Aleksandar was held to much higher standards than any of his peers. If his tutors reported anything but exceptional work from him, Aleksandar's father would express his disappointment with a days long silent treatment, as well as the instruction for him to stay in his room and study while children in the neighbourhood were allowed to spend their afternoons outside to play.
Upon starting his magic education, this pressure also loomed over Ale's spell casting. Simply managing to cast a spell successfully was not enough - There needed to be a precision to his words and movements, a focus that went above and beyond what was strictly necessary. Failing a spell was shameful, so it was unacceptable, and Aleksandar's father made sure to check in on his son's progress whenever possible, to make sure he was improving himself to the highest levels.
These expectations were not only about Ale's education, of course. The boy was expected to develop excellent manners, know when and how to speak, how to hold himself and how to make a great first impression on anyone he met. With Aleksandar's father being an important Quantity Surveyor in Bulgaria, they often had important visitors, and if Aleksandar's behaviour was in any way out of line he would have to retreat to his room where a tutor would imprint the importance of proper etiquette on him for hours.
Always striving for his father's approval, Aleksandar took it upon himself to work as hard as he could to perfect anything that was expected of him as well as anything he took a personal interest in, even without his tutors to push him to it. Praise from his father was ridiculously hard to achieve, but that made it all the more valuable to the young boy. He craved any sign of approval almost desperately and was prepared to do anything that was asked of him. If his father asked him to jump, Ale would not ask how high but would work on beating the record for highest jump without question. This was always something his mother gravely disapproved of, but to Aleksandar that made it even more worthwhile as he had never been very interested in his mother's opinions. Anything that displeased her was something to aspire to in Aleksandar's books.
Perfectionist II

Already having been eager to please his father in any way he could by trying to perfect anything he was doing, Aleksandar's need to excel in everything only grew once he was accepted into Durmstrang. His acceptance into the school itself had not come as a surprise to anybody as his father had also attended the Durmstrang Institute; On the contrary, if he hadn't been accepted it would have just been yet another disappointment.
While Aleksandar had always been aware of the fact that his blood wasn't as clean as it was supposed to be, being among other children from Pureblood families made it particularly clear to him. His father had always expected the most of him, but Aleksandar had not completely understood why until he had been confronted with Pureblooded peers. As someone who disrupted his family's bloodline, he would get snide remarks about his half-blood mother almost daily, which only furthered Aleksandar's dislike for her even more. At the same time it spurred him on to prove himself as just as capable as any other Pureblood out there.
Keeping up his grades was for his father as much as it was for himself; The impurity in his blood did not matter as long as he proved himself as smart and capable and kept up a good relationship to other Pureblood children. Being at the top of his class had quickly made him someone other people would seek out for help with academics, no matter the flaws in his blood.
Aleksandar had quickly found himself particularly good at spell casting - a skill he continuously worked on despite a natural affinity, to make sure he would be able to prove himself the best, at least of his Year, at it - but struggled with potions, so most of his free time was spent working on perfecting recipes over and over again. He didn't mind the extra work - The thought of pleasing his father as well as proving himself just as good - better even! - as his Pureblood peers was motivation enough for him. School work quickly became one of the most important things in his life, so while Aleksandar always made sure to keep his social life busy, he did occasionally find himself excluded from the community. Extracurricular activities like clubs and sports did not seem relevant when he had other things, like practicing his spell casting and potion making, to focus on. They may have been gateways into developing new skills, but Ale found himself with his hands full just trying to perfect the ones he was already working on, so he was usually only found at school matches to keep up appearances.
Terrible Presence
Reducio
Aleksandar's childhood had definitely not been terrible.
On the contrary, he had never really found himself wanting for much, had been spoiled with any materialistic things he could have possibly asked for. However, it had also never been warm in any way. His au-pairs had been strict, expecting nothing but the best of him, his tutors had been detached. His father's disapproval and disappointment had always hung over him, like a dark rain cloud making him want to run for shelter. The only person who had tried to show him some warmth on the rare occasions she was around, had been his mother, and she was the last person Aleksandar had craved affection from.
Thus, he himself had grown up cold in multiple ways. Perfectly capable of being friendly and polite, there is something distinctly off about Aleksandar. There is a tilt to his smile, a far off look in his eyes, that speaks of cruel detachment. There is not much this boy cares about; only his father's approval, his own efforts of making up for the impurity of his own blood, and to somehow, someday, rid his family of the filthy stain that is his mother making everything so much more complicated than it needs to be.
It is not that Aleksandar has problems making friends - As someone who is at the top of his class, a lot of his classmates tend to seek him out for help and advice, and he is always quick to offer it - but rather he can see the way he can unsettle them without even trying. One look at his face, a quick exchange of words, is more than enough to realise that there is no warmth and affection inside this boy. He had never been shown much of either growing up, so he had also never learned to put any out into the world. Aleksandar is not a shoulder to cry on or someone to get heartfelt advice from, and his few friends know as much. He is the one to come to for help in class or to talk about recent developments in Wandmaking to.
The emotions he shows are few and far in between, and people tend to feel uneasy around him for that reason exactly. They feel wary about his empty eyes and fake smile, and things don't usually get better when he talks. Unless Aleksandar has reason to come across as friendly and polite, he will seem rather arrogant, cruel even. He doesn't have much concern for other people's feelings, and most people are able to tell just by looking at him. Something about the way he talks and holds himself is just too terrible for a boy so young.
