Appearance

Elias is rather ordinary looking for his age, despite looking a year older or so. He stands at 5'9 and is still growing into his height, lanky with a questionable posture. Due to years of playing hockey with his family and quidditch in Durmstrang, he has a lean build and isn't completely skin and bones. His hair and eyes match, both dark brown in color. He keeps his hair tidy on the sides, leaving the top to grow a little bit longer. It's easy to maintain, compared to if he let his coils grow out. Almond-shaped eyes frame his face well, though he squints them a lot as a habit since he's supposed to wear glasses but doesn't like the way they look on his face, choosing to be blind instead (beauty is pain). His lips are plump and pink, and on the occasion he'd curl them into a smile, you'd notice straight teeth slightly stained from years of braces. Reflecting his personality accurately, the boy's wardrobe is a wild card. He'll sometimes wear a normal sweatshirt or button-up, others he can show up in a dad on vacation style tropical shirt with the most ridiculous accessories. Besides that, he wears nail polish which is usually chipped from scratching.

Personality

Quiet in words, Elias is extremely loud with his actions. Growing up with four sisters, he’s taught himself to listen instead of speak, and it’s gone from a characteristic to a habit. Not that it’s necessarily a bad thing to be silent, especially in Durmstrang, a place that enforces obedience almost every five minutes. However, not speaking up most of the time tends to make him build up emotions that make him reckless to a fault. He tends to do small acts of rebellion that aren’t exactly noticeable. Whether it’s maybe simply sneaking a piece of food into the library, or going to lengths like sneaking out at night… The rush of adrenaline that goes to his brain every time is almost intoxicating.

That isn’t the case with his friends, however. Who he acts like a completely different person around. Elias is extremely competitive with them, especially the ones on his quidditch team. He loves to rough house and joke around with people, even if the ones he cracks are painfully corny. Elias definitely is stubborn, and once he has an image of people it’s nearly impossible to shake, which is why he values his friends so much. He’d do almost anything for them, and they’re somewhat his home away from home. Without them he’d most likely be a Durmstrang dropout.

And while Elias is quiet and keeps his cool most of the time, around people he looks up to, he becomes a complete mess. He always attempts to show off in front of them, though it always ends up going south. He isn’t necessarily clumsy, and can’t really be if he’s to play quidditch. But there’s something about being around people he wants to impress that puts him in a different mindset, making him extremely awkward and different.

Elias is very insecure, like most teenage boys, but comfortable with his masculinity and enjoys doing makeup in his own time. It’s pretty surprising to people when they find out since he doesn’t do it in public. Not exactly because he’s embarrassed, it’s just a hobby that he doesn’t like to flaunt. It also isn’t exactly something one expects from a quidditch player, but hey, it’s fun and why hide it?

History

The Oja family was a very contrasting family compared to the quaint Porvoo, Finland where they resided. A small, red house filled to the brim with five rambunctious children right next to the lake, it was most definitely a sight to behold. Especially with most of them harboring magic abilities, it was certainly different. Especially for their father, Matias, who was a blissfully confused muggle that while he was rather freaked out by magic, accepted it. After all, magic was a small price to pay for being married to Haldis. Their son, Elias, was smack in the middle of four other girls, and sort of a black sheep. They didn’t exactly see him that way, but there was always that feeling of simply not belonging. He’d always try to get involved in what his sisters were doing. Painting nails, reading the new Witch Weekly, though he’d always get a smack upside the head and be told to start becoming a man.

One thing his parents did accept (and something that he loved), was playing hockey with his sisters on the lake by their house in the harsh Finnish winters. He at first mostly did it for his ten-year-old sister Aliina who was a squib and would never exactly experience the wonder that was quidditch. But at one point he was hooked on the sport and couldn’t get enough of it. The sheer adrenaline from ripping through the air on skates was nearly addicting. He was happy, and so was his family.

Until they weren’t.

Matias Oja loved Haldis with every fiber of his being, that was a fact that proved to be true. But love wasn’t enough to prevent mistakes. Being a muggle, he watched Haldis go off to work as a herbologist every day, for hours, and hours. Sitting in his room and wondering what she could possibly be doing. And how he could never comprehend her world, what it was like. It drove him mad, and he started sneaking out at night to drink. But then he met Saara, another muggle who gave him the validation he so desperately craved. He tried to convince himself it would be a one-time thing, every single time he came running back to her. But not even he believed that.

And on one fateful day, Haldis came home early from work to find that her husband was not home. She assumed he went to the store, or went out for a walk. But her hopes of everything being okay slowly diminished as the hours passed. Nine o’clock, ten, eleven… And as the clock struck midnight, she peeked out the window to see the man she loved so, so dearly, kissing another woman goodbye. Haldis felt herself break into pieces, not having the strength to look away.

From that day forward, the Oja family was broken. It was a silent thing that nobody dared to mention, but every last person in the house eventually caught on. Haldis and Matias acted as if nobody would notice the creaking on the stairs as he snuck down to sleep on the couch. They tried to pretend everything was normal, but it would never be the same. And when Elias got his acceptance letter from Durmstrang, it was like a breath of fresh air that he’d finally get away from the hot mess that was his family. Everything was okay, and when he was home for the summer he could pretend like they were all brought together again.

That was until the summer before his third year when he walked into his parents’ room to borrow a book, that’s when he saw the divorce papers. He knew that it was coming, but that didn’t make it any less miserable for him. Elias used quidditch as an outlet, an escape from what used to be something he cherished a great deal. So he just ignores it and chooses to live in a false reality when at school that he’d go back home to a happy, whole family, hoping it’d be enough.

Sports is something Elias is no stranger to. In fact, they’re one of the only things he uses to blow off steam. In such a constantly cold and cloudy climate, there wasn’t much to do after all. Before Durmstrang, Elias spent his childhood years in Finland playing hockey. Most children did, actually. It was hard to resist when there was a frozen-over lake right in your backyard. For hours he’d be on the ice with his family, and honestly… They were a lot better than him. It was frustrating since he was older than most of his sisters and he couldn’t even win against them. So he took matters into his own hands, swallowing his pride and began to practice day and night. Of course, he wasn’t a prodigy, but this caused him to be quick on his feet in numerous situations.

Whether it was sprinting from his sisters who were trying to smear makeup all over his face, or dodging one of his friends punches (which were supposed to be funny, but holy crap, they hurt), he noticed that after a while he was able to build up stamina, and instinctively avoid things that could potentially harm him. There wasn’t much urgency in it since he wasn’t bullied or in a household where he had to worry about things like that. Maybe the lack of priority in his task was what sped up the process, but either way, it was an advantage. But it definitely helped build up his confidence, and Elias noticed an improvement when he started to kick his sisters’ butts on the ice.

When he started to play quidditch, it was very, very different. Hockey, of course, had a bit of violence, but nothing like this. There were literal giant, metal balls flying around trying to knock you off a flying wooden stick so you’d go unconscious. That… was different. In fact, it was terrifying. Elias spent most of his time playing the game trying not to get killed by the bludgers zooming across the field. And it worked, for the most part. But Elias won’t ever forget the first time he’d ever gotten hit by a bludger. Thinking about it still hurts his head to this day. He was flying, about to make a winning goal, and all of a sudden, he flew right into the ball and everything went black. From that day forth, he’s been way, way more careful of his surroundings to make sure he doesn’t have to go through something as painful as that again.

When you live with four raging, emotional sisters… It’s more than a little challenging to be scared. Especially when they’re all in a small little clique and prank you whenever they get the chance. And when most of them are magical and have random outbursts when they’re angry. This was the case for Elias Oja, and while he loved his sisters, they tortured him to the point where he was unphased by almost anything. It was still annoying but at one point he began to catch on when they were scheming and when they weren’t. Even when their father took them to see a scary movie, Elias would barely flinch at the cheap scares that were standing before him. It’d take more than a deformed face on a screen or one of his sisters making plates fly across the kitchen to give him nightmares.

Being in a wizarding family, weird things happen and you have to be ready for them, after all. And when your mother is a herbologist and brings deadly plants home, you have to be ready for that too. Elias learned that the hard way. After many dumb impulse choices out of curiosity. And many trips to the hospital. And lots of berating from both his mother and father for his trouble.

And while Elias likes to think he’s big and brave, his bravery also comes from, well, stupidity. He’s honestly quite oblivious to things happening around him most of the time. He could be reading and not even notice that there’s a fistfight happening right in front of him, or sometimes even get lost in his own thoughts and find himself in trouble with people. It’s honestly a little concerning how thick his skull is, but at least it comes with perks. It makes it pretty easy to get revenge on his sisters when they’re scared of bugs and he isn’t.

After being accustomed to the quirks and strange experiences that came with magic abilities at home, even Durmstrang didn’t really surprise him at all. Of course, the magical creatures, spell backfires, and more startled him. But they weren’t insane. He isn’t completely fearless, being a teenager comes with your mind moving from thought to thought at a mile a minute. Elias has anxiety and overthinks things just like most people, but just not about killer clowns or anything else out of the ordinary.
