There is no denying that Ophélie is a beautiful creature. Long and willowy, tall but not physically mature, soft-skinned with blushy cheeks and freckles only visible in the summer seasons. They have long, loose cocoa-colored curls that are naturally frizzy framing their square face. Full lips and wide expressive eyes, thick brows, scrawny shoulders and a slightly broad but flat chest prominent in contrast. Their legs, typically covered by long skirts and dresses, provide ample strength and support, but they are usually swaying back and forth on the toes of their feet as if constantly on the verge of taking off. They are not as fragile as they appear: a swift runner with fine stamina and reflexes, brought on by all those hours playing and exploring. Skin naturally tan darkened further by the sun, not yet marred by acne or blemishes. They prefer to avoid makeup since it gets uncomfortable quickly but will adorn it if there’s an important event taking place. When they smile─which is often─it is wide and genuine, and rarely do they come across a person that does not smile back.

Ophélie is, without a doubt, one of the sweetest people you will ever come across. They are optimistic in all of their endeavors, enthusiastic in their introductions, easy to amuse and a lover of big warm hugs. You will find no judgement in conversations with them, only kind acceptance and empathy. They always assume you have good intentions, and for that reason it is nearly impossible to make an enemy out of them, because they will not rest until they have befriended you. You can share all your secrets and they will keep them locked away. They are your shoulder to cry on and they always know exactly what to say to make you feel better.

On the other, more negative hand, Ophé is incredibly clingy and emotional. If they see someone they know, they will make a direct path toward them, grab their hand, and refuse to let go for as long as they possibly can. Also, quick to tears and often overly dramatic; however, they do their best to cover it up, so as not to burden people with their problems. They are unfortunately not very good at that.

Another of their negative traits is their naivety. I mentioned above that they are trusting: although that is typically a good thing, sometimes ─ like with their grandfather ─ they will cling to the notion that someone is a nice person on the inside and will come around eventually. This state of mind has led to many hurt feelings in their life. Being the huge romantic that they are (and I mean huge ─ the kind that thinks about them all day, dreams about them all night, writes poems and stories inspired by their pretty eyes, and feigns a faint every time they recall an interaction between the two of them), I can promise that they are bound to get their heart broken a million times over in this life and the next. It is in their nature.

Among their interests are writing (poetry, stories, or even random observations about the world), singing, dancing, theater, and of course, painting. They are a creator, a lover of simple pleasures, of colors and images and make-believe. They have made so many things and hid them in all the nooks and crannies of the mansion; those that were intangible have left their marks as well, like the tear in the curtain left from when they swung from it across the room, pretending to be a jungle explorer. The flecks of paint on the walls that no one caught and scrubbed away. The faint scent of flowers from the day they came home from the meadow with a hundred woven into their hair.

Ophé lives in their imagination, but they still love real life, and bringing people into the make-believe worlds they have created.

On December 2nd, 2009, at 5:00 p.m. Ophélie July Moore was born, assigned male, and given the name Hugo Plantagenet in a small but expensive house at the edge of the suburbs in California, USA. Only one of their parents was present.

Ophé's mother, a woman named Ines Plantagenet, had met and fallen for Lukas Charlton, another Pureblood living in France. By that point, Ines already had one child, and the two planned to settle and raise her together. They were deeply in love and happy for about a year. Then, something happened that changed everything: Lukas discovered that his sister Adelene was dead.

He had known. Suspected, at least, when she had gone missing all those years ago. Adelene was his twin and closest friend until they were fifteen and she disappeared. He had held out hope for her survival, that he could one day reunite with her, but now he knew that she was irretrievable. Poisoned, the letter said. Upon learning this, he began developing theories about the possibility of her murder, and the grief and anger took over his life. He became distant and uncooperative towards Ines, despite the fact that she had done nothing to merit it. Their relationship became unsteady and filled with nonstop arguing. Soon after it came to her attention that she was pregnant again. Fearing their relationship couldn't take the strain, she fled back to America, where she had lived for four years prior. Staying as far away from her strict, blood-purist parents and their disapproving gaze seemed like the best idea at the time.

Then the child was was born.

Ophé, then known as Hugo, lived in California until they were five. There they attended No-Maj school, made many friends, and learned to speak in English. It was pleasant but mostly uneventful for them; however, their mother reconnected with an old friend named Thalia Moore, and the two started dating. Thalia spent a long time encouraging Ines to face her fears (or, in other words, her parents). Eventually all of them─including Thalia and her son─moved back to France. At that point Ophélie was quite content with their life, and the drastic adjustment would take a while to get used to.

Though they were unaware of it at the time, their family─the Plantagenets─was an ancient one that still held ancient grudges. Specifically against No-Majes and anyone associated with them. Although Ines was doing her best to break away from these old-fashioned prejudices, her parents were not so considerate. They refused to remain within close proximity of anyone that had a drop of No-Maj blood in their veins. Due to these outdated customs, they did not take kindly to Ines returning with her No-Maj-born lover, and refused to pay for any other place for them to stay. Now they were stuck, and finally made the reluctant decision to part ways. Thalia Moore rented a small home for herself and her son, and Ines and her children returned once again to the Plantagenet Mansion. Ophé was still five at the time, if you’d forgotten.

At first, the mansion seemed like heaven on earth to the little child. There was so much to explore, so many stairwells and chandeliers and empty walls just begging to be covered in art. However, the thrill of the new location was quickly replaced by discomfort and fear. The first time they painted on their bedroom wall, it was a little furry woodland creature of some kind that they were immensely proud of. Since they had not really gotten to know their grandfather yet, and he owned this place so he must be amazing, they wanted him to see what they had done. Surely he would be elated that they had brightened up the place. “Thank goodness, it’s always been so plain here, but you’re the perfect person to decorate it.” Instead he immediately scolded them and removed their artwork with a single wave of his wand before returning to whatever he’d been tending to before. Ophélie could not have been more devastated.

They did their best to entertain themself without making a mess or bothering the master of the house again; instead they took out all of their mischief on the housekeeper and the nanny. They put on plays and dressed in all of their grandmother’s finest silks; they climbed to the top of the stairs and swung from one of the curtains, belting a song from the Opera; they spilled all of their paints and danced around in them, thereby making a bigger mess; they ran away from home to go find places to write poetry about. It was true that they did their best to avoid trouble, but in a dreary, plain, empty place like this, there wasn’t really anything else to be done.

Their first sign of magic occurred when they were six. They cracked one of their grandmother’s favorite jewels─a ruby, or something of the sort─and the moment before they were caught with the broken pieces of the treasure, somehow it... reconnected. Fixed itself. The maid scolded them a bit for playing with fragile things, but that was typical. They were incredibly disappointed that they couldn’t tell everyone about the magic they had displayed, but thankfully, their second sign of magic came about a week later, when they made an apple levitate for a few seconds. Everyone present applauded, even their grandmother, which made their day.

Age seven was when they discovered their love of dresses. They had worn them for make-believe games, of course, but now they had the revelation that dresses could be worn day-to-day. They loved the way they felt, the fabric brushing gently against their legs, the way the skirts blew about in the wind. They loved how elegant and beautiful they made them feel. Wearing them out into the world was horribly scary at first, but they soon gained confidence that way as well.

The next few years were more of the same, except that Thalia adopted another son. At age nine Ophélie felt ready to come out as non-binary to their family and friends, who were generally accepting, if a little confused. They decided on the name Ophélie, since it sounded so pretty. Not to mention that a more feminine title felt more accurate for them as an individual. One year later Ines and Thalia were married, and Ophélie (along with their mother) changed their surname to match Thalia’s. Since all of this name-changing was going on, they thought they might as well add a middle name too.

Ophélie July Moore. That felt much better. A preferable way to introduce themself to all of their new friends at Beauxbatons.

Year 1: Calming Presence
─────── ❀ ───────
Ophé has gotten into troublesome situations countless times, usually by their own hand. They have broken fragile items, torn expensive fabrics, left messes in rooms that have just been cleaned, and just generally been a bother, especially to the housekeeper and the nanny. Yet, whenever they are caught, the worst that happens is that they are shooed out of the room while their caretaker fixes whatever mistake they made. Then they are loved and doted on once more.

They certainly deserve consequences and scoldings, and they are constantly expecting the grownups to get all riled up and angry with them. But, somehow, it rarely seems to happen. Why?

The same happens with altercations between them and their peers; or, rather, the lack of them. It isn't that they are quick to sort out whatever problem the other person has with them ─ it's they they are rarely confronted in the first place. They are able to live in peaceful harmony with their classmates and others, without any quarrels or issues.

It's not that they're never teased, because when a (supposed) boy wears a dress, some people just can't help themselves. But they're never teased for long, because the bullies simply can't seem to hold onto any scrap of anger or bitterness when in Ophé's presence.

Presence. That's a key word.

They at first believed it to be the kindness of other people, but over time have come to realized that it has to do primarily with themself. The peaceful aura the seems to surround them wherever they go. It is like a pillow between them and all the sharp words and actions that they world has to offer (which, despite what they let themselves be aware of, is a lot). And since it affects others too, it is pleasant for all involved.

This strange ability of putting others at ease... isn't magical, per se. It simply comes from the constant, unfaltering joy radiating from Ophé, and the pleasure that being alive and experiencing the world never fails to bring them. Their easy laughter, their bright smile and kind eyes. Their hugs and their forgiveness. Their obvious inability to get angry, accompanied by their somehow endearing naivety and innocence. Despite what they are convinced, this power does not have to do with the fact that they are a wizard. Not a spell, not a charm nor hex... just Ophé, and happiness, and their persistent, absolute love for other people.
